SportsThe Forgotten Pitch: Ikire's Sports Tragedy - A Story Of Neglect & Broken Dreams by Ayomitemedia(op): 5:16pm On Aug 09, 2024
The Forgotten Pitch: Ikire's Sports Tragedy - A Story of Neglect, Decay, and Broken Dreams

Ikire, a town once vibrant with sporting life, now lies a forgotten pitch, a testament to neglect, decay, and shattered dreams. The cracked earth, overgrown with weeds, tells a tale of abandonment, a story of how a community's passion was left to wither away. This neglect stems not from the athletes, but from the shortsighted perspective of the town's leaders, who failed to recognize the value of sports in nurturing talent and fostering community spirit.

Ikire was once a hub of activity, where young athletes gathered to chase their dreams, even if it wasn't monetized. The environment was electric, with anticipation building for various competitions like the inter-ward and Referee's Cup. The air was filled with laughter and cheering crowds. Now, the only sound is the eerie silence of neglect, punctuated by the occasional interruption of inter-secondary school football competitions during the annual Ikire Day celebrations.

Sports in Ikire was once the pride of the community, boasting talents like Oloyede Azeez (Sisco) from Youngstar Football Club, a rock-solid and impenetrable defender. Adeniran Azeez, also from Youngstar, was a maestro with his box-to-box playing style and dynamo-like energy. Akinropo Opeyemi (Magato) from TJ Football Academy was the fulcrum, a link-man with exceptional ability. Muili Abdulateef (Scholes) from the same team was the engine room, a talented playmaker. Other great talents like Debul, Evra, Oscar, and many more made the town eagerly anticipate sports activities, especially football.

Now, the goals stand like skeletal sentinels, a haunting reminder of what once was. The surrounding facilities, a shadow of their former selves, whisper tales of mismanagement and abandonment. It's a shame that a town like Ile-Ogbo has a standard football stadium, while Ikire cannot boast of a well-maintained open field for its sports activities.

The athletes who once called this pitch home have been forced to flee, seeking greener pastures elsewhere, taking on any jobs they can find. This exodus is a heartbreaking, sad, and despairing sight to behold. Their dreams, nurtured on this very ground, now seem destined to wither away like the pitch itself - a car crash in slow motion.

But it's not just the athletes who suffer. The community, once united by their love of sports, now feels the sting of neglect. Denied many sports activities, the town's economy and social life are suffering. It was amusing to see referees and coaches, who have gone on to greater heights, being promoted to local leagues at the state level or equivalent. Mr. Oyeyinka, a pride of Ikire, comes to mind.

I vividly remember when the Referee's Football Competition was organized (led by Mr. Mutiu Odetola). A mammoth crowd flooded in to watch, and the Uniosun area of Ikire experienced significant economic and social growth. We also once had the Colonel Falabi Competition and the Omidiran Football Competition. The forgotten pitch serves as a constant reminder of what could have been - a symbol of broken promises and shattered hopes.

Amidst the decay, a glimmer of hope remains. The passion for sports still burns bright in the hearts of the people. The forgotten pitch, though a tragedy, can also be a catalyst for change. Ikire is blessed with successful and illustrious sons and daughters who can bring about a massive transformation in the town's sports life. They can shatter the notion that "you can't be successful in sports from Ikire" - a facade that has cursed the town for far too long. Moreover, they can rescue the lives of athletes who have dedicated their youthful, significant, and irrecoverable time to their passion for football and other sports.

A solution is within reach for those willing to revitalize Ikire's ailing sports life. Prominent individuals can adopt a football club, financing and promoting it, while also providing exposure and travel opportunities for the players. This could include but not limite to:

- Ikire Progressive Union Team
- Akogun Lere Oyewumi Football Club
- Bola Oyebamiji Football Academy
- Dr. Aliu Olushola Football Team
- IOA Football Team
- IBO Football Team

If done with the intention of helping those whose destiny is tied to sports, this initiative will succeed. Our slogan, "Eni to fe ikire yoo se rere," should motivate potential sponsors, promising a greater Return on Investment (ROI).

Let us unite to reclaim our pitch, revive our community's sporting spirit, nurture the dreams of our young athletes, and restore our town's pride. The forgotten pitch may symbolize neglect, but it can also testify to our resilience and determination. Eni to fe ikire yoo sere.

Celebrities‘it Was Rigged,’ Charles Okocha Seeks Rematch After Losing Boxing Fight by Ayomitemedia(op): 7:37pm On Dec 27, 2023
Nollywood actor, Charles Okocha has described his recent boxing bout with Nigerian street-pop singer, Portable as rigged, calling for a rematch.

Recall that Charles Okocha was defeated by Portable in a recent boxing match on Tuesday.

Portable was declared the winner by the referee after fulfilling the qualifications to win the bout.

Reacting, Charles Okocha called out the referee for irregularities, alleging that Portable removed his boxing gloves during the third round, which should have resulted in immediate disqualification.

He wrote, “How can you give up in the 3rd round when we have 4 rounds? How do you take off your gloves in the third round, leading to total disqualification when the fight hasn’t ended?”

“Y’all know this was rigged, with an incompetent referee who knows nothing about boxing rules. Nevertheless, we move on. Rematch coming soon.”

CelebritiesPhyna Invited By The Police Over Her Alleged Failure To Return A Rented Wig by Ayomitemedia(op): 6:06pm On Dec 21, 2023
Former Big Brother Naija winner, Josephine Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has been invited by the police over her alleged failure to return a rented wig to a wig vendor.

Recall that a hair vendor recently accused Phyna of renting a wig from her and refusing to return it after the agreed-upon date.

Phyna initially denied the allegations, but later said that she returned the wig after she was called out but the hair vendor rejected it. She added that she decided to keep the wig because the damage the hair vendor did to her was more than the price of the wig.

Updating her fans, Phyna said the hair vendor visited her house with police when she was not around and dropped a letter for her.

Phyna said, “Yesterday, my younger sister called me and said I’ve visitors in my house. I asked who they were and she said two policemen, the hairstylist and one woman. I asked who the woman was but she said she doesn’t know the woman. “

And they dropped a letter. Because it’s from the police I want to know what to do. It reads, ‘This is the Nigeria Police. Invitation to the police.’ They now put my name, my address. Then it continued, ‘From the DPO Nigeria Police Ogudu.’ I don’t know where Ogudu is, but I will find out.”

She added in another post: “In this life make sure them nor patronise your enemies for you oh…”

EducationDegrees No Longer Guarantee Jobs, Seek Demonstrable Skills — JAMB Registrar by Ayomitemedia(op): 8:34pm On Dec 14, 2023
Degrees no longer guarantee jobs, seek demonstrable skills — JAMB Registrar, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, tells Nigerian students

The registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Ishaq Oloyede, has advised students of tertiary institutions in the country to acquire skills in addition to their degrees.

Speaking at the convocation ceremony of the Kwara State University on Thursday, December 14, he said: “New opportunities will emerge in the high-tech sector, and many skills that were not otherwise taught in conventional schools would be needed.

Degrees would no longer be the sole guarantee of jobs, but demonstrable skills would.

In this regard, there won’t be a meaningful difference between the literates and the illiterates without the cutting-edge skills that are associated with the triad – learning, unlearning, and relearning.

Those who can learn, unlearn, and relearn are the successful ones, and those without the mindset that accommodates the triad are bound to perpetually lament.

The world of today is different from the stone age; one of the factors responsible for this change is the totality of what makes the information age, which is still evolving as technology develops rapidly.

The dynamism of the world provides new opportunities and thr£ats. While there are new opportunities in information technology, the existing jobs as typists, receptionists, traditional printers, telephone booth operators, computer operators, factory workers, cashiers, travel agents, and fuel attendants, among others, are on the verge of extinction.

The onus of responsibility lies on everyone to get prepared for the challenges of the information age by taking lifelong learning seriously and being willing to change as the circumstances unfold.”
