lets pray it gets better. God will surely send helpers our way. I got married to the best, most supportive woman that understands. If not maybe i for don do rituals. I graduated mass comm in 2017 and served 2018/19. Been teaching since Sept 2021 and still cant save a dime plus no pay during holidays. It is really breaking my heart that we work like horses and eat like ants.

I also graduate 2014, served 2015/2016, den work for an engineer who promise me a fed govt job since 2018, spent 6 years with her collecting stipend, and after 6 years she couldn't get me the job, she retired from service den I took a bold step and leave, that's how I found myself teaching to survive. Thanks to my wife as well, she understood the situation and supportive as well

Being a private school teacher is nothing to be proud of. I've been managing for 3 years now with my HND result and still applying here and there to see if anybody can just give just a trial. When other people are fight for minimum wage, who born. Some of us are still on 10k, 12k, 15k and below minimum wage. So many people will say why dont you start a business? How do we intend to raise capital from those Davido, Wizkid and Burna boy's recharge airtime money we call take home to feed wife and kid, and even send money to mummy and daddy. Life of a private school teacher in Nigeria is a dream for a Nigerian kid.

Are u a private school teacher?

Career / Re: I Just Lost My Job. I Feel devastated by aysnoopy(m): 8:28am On Feb 11
Tallesty1:
Nobody left you behind; you came here alone. You will experience life differently, make decisions on your own, and eventually leave alone.

You won't get any better if you continue comparing yourself with your mates. It has never helped anyone and will never help you.

Many of my mates are dead, I know some who are mad, I have some that I drop something for whenever we meet because they think I am better, and there are some that won't even shake my hands because they feel I am way below them. Life is unfairly fair.

I have read your story, and I still can't blame you. You did what you thought was right, and you had your reasons. You wouldn't be complaining if it had worked out as it should have. That is life for you.

You have enough time for anything. This is the second month of the year. If you acquire a good skill, you will earn better next year. Take this from someone who has touched money and lost it all.

You just have to learn to read the room and improve your decision-making skills. You have an advantage over some of us; you go school, I no go. You can get a better job; I don't have that hope. But what I did, knowing how disadvantaged I am, is to keep acquiring skills. I have been doing that since 2011, and I am still on it, and I tell you that this one won't be my last.

If you see me talking about doing this type of work and that other type of work, you might think I am exaggerating, but it is all true. A jack of all trades may be a master of none, but he is often times better than a master of one. I get by.

A couple of years back, I made some incredibly fvcked up decisions and was broke just when my rent was due. I saw my ears. Just when I was about to be thrown out, someone linked me up to a job in town. It didn't pay well, but it sorted my current need. What else could one ask for in a time like that? But that was possible because I knew how to do the work.

Keep learning something.

Someone was calling me for work the other day; I kept postponing because I was busy. At one point, she was like, "Uchenna, you don dey get pride." I replied, "Ma'am, it has always been there, you just didn't notice it quickly." She said, "Just know that nobody is indispensable." I said, "True, but some cannot truly be replaced." We laughed over it, and I promised to do it the next day. She waited because she knew I could do it to perfection.

I learned that skill within a year.

You can learn a better one in less than a year.

No hope is lost chief. When a man wakes is his own morning. Take time to think things through, then decide on what you are sure you would be good at and learn it. Soon, you will be fine.

As bad as Nigeria may get, you will get by if you offer some value to people; they will find you.

The lady in the conversation above, if I tell you her office in ABJ here, you will think I am mad for talking to her that way, and you will be right. First time in her office, I showed up dressed the way I was, and naturally, I don't look like much, so imagine a guy like that dressed so casually you'd think he isn't serious showing in the office of all these Abuja women?

She could have thrown me out if I wasn't recommended by someone. The way she talked to me and all was like I have a disease or something. Well, I gave my quotation, and she asked me why it was more expensive than the others. I gave her another one that was in the same price range as others, and a third one was just the first one without the prices, except for my workmanship.

She, of course, wanted to know why, and I explained to her that the first one is the one I recommend because all the materials are of the best quality, the second is cheap because others will use just okay or good enough for some time materials, and the third is just my charge. She will get whatever materials she chooses, and I will use them to work for her. Something for everyone.

She promised to get back; the next morning, she texted me the address to her house and told me to see her in the afternoon. I did. In her house, I searched for a chair that is "within or a little above my level," but she didn't have one, so I chose to stand. She kuku didn't offer me one.

We went over the whole thing again. Finally, she chose option A but asked me to reduce my workmanship. I told her, "NO" and told her that my charge is not negotiable. When she asked why, I told her, "I don't use price to attract or keep customers; I rely on good work."

I learned that as a phone/laptop repairer. Poorly charged work is usually the most difficult to execute. Customers will be like, "Please, help me," and if you mistakenly accept, you will end up spending the whole day on that particular work and may not finish it.

If you charge low, you may get the deal and more deals but there is a problem, you will be working with nothing to show for it because the money usually finish before you even complete your work or you will abandon work because the money has finished or you will look for another work to use the mobilization fee to complete the current one or you will start giving excuses and avoiding the owner. It is a terrible endless loop from hell.

Always remember that. Don't, no matter how much you need the money, accept a crappy deal because you hope to get another one from the client. It usually doesn't happen because they know that what they are giving you is crap money, so you accepting it gives them a poor opinion about you and puts a question mark on your ability to handle bigger jobs.

The lady in my story can wait for me for a few days even though I will charge her more. Her husband said I used Nsukka charm.

If you know your worth, then settle for it or more; settling for less makes you less.

Good luck, bro.

I'm totally speechless. Thanks so much for your advice and words of encouragement. I appreciate
I'll like to ask, like what kind of profitable skills on can learn within a year. I'll appreciate if u can provide me some few to choose from

This is so true. The meagre salary isn't even commensurate to the skills the man has. That's crazy because he read Civil Engineering which is a professional course.

Phewww!

I pray he gets something better really.

Thanks so much for your prayers. It's really a long story. I just don't take the job, it has reasons but I was used and dumbed. I wasted a whole 6 years and I've to just start my life afresh. Been depressed and hungry isn't something to joke with. Right now I'm hypertensive, at 33years. I've been on drug since I was 29years old. I just hope I won't die young coz of the problem I'm facing with my health condition too

The worst thing about such jobs is that they don't develop you and they don't give one time to self-develop or even search for something better.

I wanted to blame the guy for taking such a job, but I held myself back since I don't know his story.

I pray he gets something better.

Let me share my story to you maybe u can blame me at the end or understand why such things happen to me
Back in February 2018, my mom met a woman, she's the zonal director of one of the federal government Agency that are into road repairs, since its base on civil engineering works, so she told me that I should come and work in her office as a casual staff, pending the time I'll be fully employed as a staff. She promised that whenever it's time for employment, she'll be of help
I work as a casual staff and got 20k monthly payment. I met some people there also waiting to be employed and since I'm the only civil engineering graduate there, I av an edge.
After 2 years, they increase it to 30k. She told me that they don't usually employ so fast like that but she assure me.
After 3 yrs, it's now time to employ people. To my surprise I wasn't employed
She told me she'll work on it. Took my credentials to Abuja but still doesn't work.
In year 2022, she retires from service, it was later I got into that she has slot since she's a director (level 17). She gave it to some other people, one of them even came to work in d office 2 years after me. But since she's one of the daughters of her friend, so she gave her and neglect me. And u can't believe I'm d one working closely with her. After her driver, I'm next.
So, that's what kept me working in that organisation. I was used and dumped and was left to my fate.
Where can I start from when all my mates have left me behind.
