*THE EXCELLENT NOUN STUDENT.*

The Oxford Advanced Learner's dictionary defines education as a process of teaching, training and learning, especially in schools and colleges to improve knowledge and skills. That definition is apt for a NOUN student. The National Open University of Nigeria is a pioneer ODL institution that breeds excellent and independent students. What makes a Nounite excellent? A true Nounite is industrious, studious, honorable, excellent in character and optimistic. A true Nounite is a confident student who accepts trends in modern technology, does not dwell on history but on apparent social realities.

Though there seems to be baseless apathy towards the institution from uninformed persons, a true Nounite believes that boxers know each other's true power, in the rings. Hence, a Nounite believes that the labour market and their productivity will silence critics. A Nounite is trained to work independently without supervision -a sought after skill by employers.

A true Nounite undergoes quality training in learning and character, possess the qualities that will surely woo employers. This is why Nounites should be be proud to raise their finger anywhere to indicate their school.

The excellent Nounite is not a TMA student; they engage in quality extensive and intensive reading. A true Nounite's sterling personality cannot be hidden. An excellent Nounite is; a critical thinker, a good judge, a good manager, and an assiduous executive. An excellent NOUN student earns his certificate. Be a worthy ambassador- be an excellent NOUN student.

Are you an excellent NOUN student?

Vice Chancellor of the National Open University, Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu paying visit to DVC Acad. Office, in Lagos.

The main discussion is about Exam postponement. The vice chancellor said the quality and integrity of the university must be upheld at all costs.

He reiterated his "absolute confidence" on all the officers in charge of examination to do their work.

The vice chancellor emphasised that Quality and Integrity is the backbone of the National Open University, and that there will be no way some few miscreants would be allowed to over take, hijack or temper with examination processes.

While describing Professor Eya as Sarkin Yaki (War Commander), the vice chancellor also thanked him for his efforts towards seeing a better, prosperous National Open University.

*HELLO GUYS IT'S OK*

FACTS!

1. Today's GST101 exam has been cancelled and is rescheduled for the 28th of August

2. Some people have written the exam already before the news broke out... while some students were still on the queue and in some other study centres, students have not even started writing at all.

3. Students that have already written their papers today _might_ be required to re-sit for it on the scheduled day. No one knows the plans yet. Just prepare.

4. Reason for the postponement is not so clear for now but it is obvious that there were multiple issues at various study centres which disturbed them from starting on time, mushin for example.

5. Continue to prepare for other courses that you have... move on

*NOUN gets NUC's nod to start film production degree*

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the commencement of BSc film production in the National Open University.

Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu who revealed this today, explained that the approval was given in principle, subject to the scaling through the process of scrutiny by a panel of experts in the field.

This information arrived minutes before the Vice Chancellor hosted in his office, the Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (MOPAN), on a courtesy visit.

He said the university, which is going to be the first Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institution to offer the programme in West Africa, initiated the process by applying to the NUC.

Professor Abdalla Adamu said with the approval, the programme would commence in two years time, as the university will soon begin putting the necessary modalities in place.

He said MOPPAN president, as a representative of the professional body, would be made part of the 4-member panel to critique the proposed curriculum as requested by the NUC.

The vice chancellor said the university was excited with the feat, as it will afford film producers in the country the opportunity to professionalise their chosen endeavor.

And in a spectacular coincidence, the president of MOPPAN, Abdullahi Maikano Usman, had earlier in his speech requested the vice chancellor to come up with film related course for members of the association to enroll.

The president said part of the reasons for their visit was to solicit for the initiation of film courses in National Open University as part of their resolve to improve capacity and qualifications of their members.

Mr Usman, who described the vice chancellor as the father and mentor of the association, said the practitioners have now seen the light in the VC's long-term stance regarding the development of the profession.

He intimated Professor Adamu of the challenge of piracy, which has assumed a global concern as it also aided terrorists' transfer of money.

He thanked the vice chancellor of his numerous supports to the association and promised to seize the opportunity the university is championing for the film producers in Nigeria.

*IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR E-EXAMS*

1. The questions are scattered but the same for all students. The position of the questions are scattered (i.e. Number one question on your screen might be the number 25th question on another person's screen... and even option A in your question might me option D in another person's question). The questions are scattered, as well as the options. Just like it is done in your TMA

2. The questions are like 35-40% OBJ but 60-65% fill-in-the-gap

3. The variation of the OBJ questions compared to the fill-in-the-gap varies depending on the exam (course you are writing)

4. Some questions in the OBJ are sometimes repeated in the fill-in-the-gap. So of you forgot some answers, move on to the next question, you will definitely find some other OBJ question that will help you remember what you forgot and help you answer the fill-in-the-gap.. that's how it goes

5. You should expect 120 questions in each course, except in Mathematics courses which carry 35 questions and each question carries 2 marks each

6. You are timed the moment you start the exam. Hence, do not waste your time trying to figure out difficult questions... in most cases, you will still find your answers in the front.

7. You will see only one question per page (unlike in your TMA where u have all the questions in one page). Hence you will be required to click "Next" to navigate to the next question or "previous" to navigate to the previous questions. There is usually a part below the page which shows the questions you have answered in a particular colour and the ones you have not answered in another coulour. This makes it easy for you to be able to spot the undone questions easily and switch to them just by one click should in case you want to check on them.

8. Once you log out, the time will stop. You might switch to another system (if any case warrants that) or continue with the same system of you wish. By the time you log back in, the time will continue from where it stopped but the questions and options will be scattered again as usual.

9. It is important that you pray before leaving home or even starting the exam.. this is because sometimes you might be seated with a bad system which might crash at anytime or freeze or give any issues. Sometimes, the affected students might have gotten so disorganized and frustrated before continuing with the exams. If their engineers come around to assist you and they succeeded, you are lucky, but the effect is that your time would have been far spent and there is nothing you (or even they) can do about it. 'Luck' is needed sometimes and it is more than 'skill' so pray well enough!

10. You must note that your picture will appear on each page of the exam question.. this will make impersonation a big risk to take.

11. You will be required to login with your matric number and password in the e-exam portal just the way you did in your TMA portal.. so guys make sure you dont have issues with your matric number or password.

12. There are important buttons to note (as you will see at the top of each page)
- NEXT
- PREVIOUS
- LOGOUT
- SUBMIT
You must not click on the SUBMIT button unless you are ready to do so. It will prompt you to confirm if you are actually ready to submit tho. Usually, before submitting, it will let you understand that there are still some questions you have left unanswered.. you may wish to still go ahead and submit or check on the ones that you are yet to answer. Leaving unanswered questions does not disturb you from submitting.

13. Once you submit, you see your score instantly! You should form the habit of noting your scores after each paper and writing it somewhere safe for record purposes so that you will compare with the result that NOUN will release at the end of the exams to know if there are any errors or not.. This will serve as a proof for necessity to go ahead to pursue a complaint or not.

14. You must not forget that it is a computer-based exam, it is computer that will mark your answers and not human so all the answers are already programmed. If you type in anything that is different from what is already programmed, it will score you wrong.. so you must make sure you type the answers accurately by spelling them correctly.

15. In addition to the above point, you must note that you cannot use your own English to answer the fill-in-the-gap questions.. it must be answered according to how it is written in the course material or how u saw them in the TMA question. If it was human that would answer the question, they will understand you and score you right.. but for a computer, it cannot do anything on its own except what was programmed on it.
