A call has gone to stakeholders in Yorubaland to be more committed to the preservation of Yoruba culture, language and monuments. Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, and foremost writer, Prof. Akinwunmi Ishola, made the call on Wednesday in their addresses at the inauguration of Odu’a Hall of Fame and Museum at Cocoa House, Ibadan, by Odu’a Investment Company Limited. Soyinka, who was special guest of honour on the occasion, said things went wrong at some point for the Yoruba as well as the entire country with the neglect of the people’s heritage and monuments. The Nobel Laureate, while describing Oduduwa as the generic father of Yoruba nation, said, “There is need to right the wrongs. With this initiative (hall and museum) I see the beginning of Yoruba technology. I am happy that appeal had been made earlier on the need to develop our culture. “However, there is one negative aspect, not just Ibadan, not just the South-West, but the country and its institutions just went into downward spin, including the Premier University (University of ibadan). “This cooperative building (Cocoa House) was a victim of deterioration simply because the normal facilities that were in place at inception had decayed. Cocoa House could not save itself. “But what I have seen today shows that things are being brought into proper shape. We can say that Cocoa House is the contemporary Opa Oranmiyan of the Yorubas. Ishola said there should be concrete attempt at promoting the culture of omoluabi. According to him, the culture of omoluabi showed that a child must differentiate between right and wrong. He stated, “The idea behind setting up the hall of fame and museum is good. But what will help is the preservation and promotion of Yoruba language so that the younger generation can imbibe the culture of omoluabi. “Odu’a must find a way of teaching the younger generation the Yoruba language. Let writers write folk tales and short stories that could be developed into cartoon.” Chairman, Odu’a Group, Chief Sarafadeen Alli, said, “The idea of putting a museum and Hall of Fame within Cocoa House was borne out of our belief that the history of the past should not be lost. “The museum showcases objects of historical or artistic values that relate to the Yoruba. It will be a good place for researchers, school children, tourists and whoever wants to learn more about Yoruba indigenous culture.” Group Managing Director/CEO of Odu’a, Mr. Adebayo Jimoh, appealed to donours to support the museum by donating artefacts. Jimoh said, “We believe that it is our responsibility to make our museum one of the best in Nigeria. We shall recognise anyone who donates to the museum.” Among those who were present on the occasion were the Awise of Osogbo, Chief Ifayemi Elebuibon; former Head of Service of the Federation, Prof. Oladapo Afolabi; Dr. Ade Adeagbo, Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof. Isaac Adewole; Chief Folake Solanke (SAN) and Tunde Kelani. http://www.adenijiazeez..com/

“I have been punished for wanting to do well”: British student, 18, arrested for studying too much A British high school called police to remove a star pupil who is so “obsessed” with revising that he refused to leave the library. Jamie Gagliardi, 18, was ejected from Ifield Community College in southern England, after refusing to leave the library, the Crawley News reported. The school accused Gagliardi, who is predicted to be an A- grade student, of being “obsessed” with after-school tuition and said that it called the police because the pupil was causing a “nuisance.” Gagliardi, who was forced to call his mother to pick him up, said, “I have been punished for wanting to do well. I am a hard-working and dedicated student, and this could have such an impact on my future.” The student went to the library despite being banned from the premises for the day as a punishment for interrupting the school principal during a meeting – to request extra revision sessions. Marilyn Evans, the school’s director of administration, said, “He became vociferous and irritated that he couldn’t have after-school revision.” She described Gagliardi as a “top student” who should do well in his exams, but said he had been “causing a nuisance and a disturbance on the premises,” adding, “He is obsessed with doing after-school revision.” A police spokeswoman confirmed that officers were called to the school to remove a “disruptive” pupil who was refusing to leave the premises, but said that Gagliardi will not face any charges. Days after accusing Don Jazzy of unleashing ‘thugs’ on him, Princewill Ojukwu appears to have finally made peace with the MAVIN Records super-producer. Ojukwu had alleged that after a row with Don Jazzy at his newly opened club, POP, the producer ordered ‘thugs’ to beat him up while he (Don Jazzy) watched. We are happy both of them have decided to sheathe their swords. Src: www.ynaija.com/snapshot-don-jazzy-and-ojukwu-say-theyre-now-friends/
