In Nigeria’s ongoing war against corruption, President Muhammadu Buhari will not spare anyone who has a case to answer, and his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, would face justice if guilty, presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina, has said. Mr. Buhari has “no accord” to shield any corrupt person from prosecution. “There is no accord,” he said, “if the corruption fight needs to get there (making Mr. Jonathan face justice), it will get there.” Several top officials who served under Mr. Jonathan, as well as his political associates in the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party, are currently being tried, or investigated by the Economic and Financial crimes Commission, for corruption. A major case involves a former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, accused of diverting $2.1 billion arms money, and sharing same to politicians and cronies of the former president. According to investigators, Mr. Dasuki says he was authorized by Mr. Jonathan to release the money for the nation’s security programmes, and for the 2015 presidential campaign. The spokesperson for the PDP, Olisa Metuh, has also said he received the payment after carrying out some assignments for the former president. Those claims have raised questions whether Mr. Jonathan, whom Mr. Buhari assured during transfer of power in 2015, that he had nothing to fear, would face prosecution should it be proven he has a case to answer. Mr. Buhari has also been accused of bias after against the PDP. The allegations gained fillip last week after his associate and party member, Jafaru Isa, was released by the EFCC despite facing same allegation as Mr. Metuh, the PDP spokesperson. But Mr. Adesina denied the allegations against the president. “There is no accord that if corruption is proven, it will not be tried,” he said of the former president. “With this president, nobody will be protected. And I underscore it, if it needs to get anywhere, it will get there.” http://www.zubbyblog.com/buhari-wont-spare-jonathan-if-ex-president-is-proven-corrupt-presidency/ |

Health Minister, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has given reasons the Federal Government cannot deploy same method it used to fight and won the battle against Ebola virus in the battle against Lassa fever. The minister said while Ebola was imported into the country through only one person, Lassa fever is endemic in the country; hence the approach to the two diseases cannot be the same. Adewole said this to State House correspondents inside the Presidential Villa in Abuja. “We cannot win the battle against Lassa fever the same way we won the one against Ebola. Ebola happened to be a single importation to the country. Lassa fever is endemic in Nigeria. In 2012, we had upsurge in 26 states. So, it is there but, I can assure you that with what we have put in place this year, we will sign it off.” The minister said current cases of the fever could not be said to be resurgence because the country had been having outbreaks with the highest of 1,700 cases recorded in 2012. Adewole said what has happened was that for the first time in the history of the country, the government was now being transparent and open on the cases. For reasons that were not stated, Sambo Dasuki, former national security adviser (NSA), was absent on Wednesday at the federal high court, Abuja, where his trial for money laundering and illegal possession of firearms was scheduled to continue. This prompted Adeniyi Ademola, the judge, to order the federal government to produce the accused before the court on February 16. He said the accused person must be physically present to face the criminal charges against him. “I am worried that the accused is not here. I do not want to set a bad precedent,” he said. “Except the court gives express order for the defendant not to be in court, the accused must be brought to court from wherever he is. The accused must be here because I am not sure if what I am doing right now in the absence of the accused is not an illegality. “Government and whoever is concerned must endeavour to do the necessary thing. http://www.zubbyblog.com/dasuki-fails-to-show-up-in-court/ |

The Director General of Ikemba Ojukwu Centre, Owerri, Dr. Samfo Nwankwo has announced the convocation of a special Conference to identify, isolate and arrest the cause of backwardness of Ndigbo in the Nigerian nation, especially in the last 16 years. He also disclosed that the Centre was putting finishing touches on a private member bill to be sent to all the Houses of Assembly in the South East to make the teaching and learning of Igbo language compulsory in all schools in Igboland. Dr Nwankwo in a statement in Owerri, the Imo State capital regretted that Igbos who were on the commanding heights of the military politics, academia and commerce before Nigeria’s independence were now at the lowest rung in the nation’s socio-political and economic development. He noted that apart from descending from such heights, the race was now suffering cultural identity crisis as the Igbo language was on the verge of extinction. http://www.zubbyblog.com/igbos-have-lost-their-position-in-nigeria-dr-samfo-nwankwo/ |
The Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Tukur Buratai, on Tuesday spoke for the first time on the bloody clash between soldiers in his convoy and members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (also known as Shi’ites) in Zaria on December 12, 2015, justifying the action of his men which reportedly resulted in the death of scores of members of the sect. Buratai, who spoke at the headquarters of the National Human Rights Commission in Abuja during the opening ceremony of the sitting of an investigative panel set up by the commission on the clash. Buratai, who explained how his convoy was held hostage by members of the sect, said his convoy was blocked in Zaria. He added that his men acted within the rules of engagement in trying to clear the way. He said, “The circumstances that led to the incident of December 12, 2015 have been well articulated by officers that were involved. I was in the convoy. It was my convoy, the convoy of the Chief of Army Staff. “I left Dutse that morning, hoping to arrive Zaria on time, to attend the passing out parade of the 73 Regular Recruit of Intakes. But, the convoy was blocked when we entered the Zaria City. “What transpired has been documented by the officers that were with me. They have also made their own statements. And they are here to give full account of what transpired. We are here because we respect human rights. ALSO READ Househelp chops off toddlers hand (graphic photos) “They (the insurgents) are currently not holding any territory today as we speak, ” the President reportedly told the UN scribe. Buhari also told him that Nigeria will persistently pursue global action to reverse the drying up of Lake Chad and save the lives of those who depend on it for survival. “With all due respect to our neighbours, Nigeria has been worst hit by the drying up of the Lake Chad and we are hoping that the global community will support the process of halting the drying up of the lake, ” he said. Governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson yesterday accused his opponent in the government election, Chief Timipre Sylva, of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of engaging in extreme callous politicking. Dickson also indicated that the souls lost in the election, deaths he said were not necessary, sobered him, which made him not to celebrate his victory. “Whenever I think of the deaths of our own people, most of them killed because they supported me, I feel terribly sad and asked the people of the state that although their will prevailed and I won, we have to keep it low as a mark of honour to those souls who deserve to live and benefit from the democracy they contributed to enthrone. Senate Leader Ali Ndume, yesterday, disclosed that the upper legislative chamber will likely pass the N6.08 trillion 2016 budget into law latest February. Ndume also described a recent call by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), that the National Assembly should commence an impeachment process against President Muhammadu Buhari, on alleged involvement in the budget controversy as ‘a joker’. Addressing Senate correspondents, Ndume reiterated that Senate would conclude and pass the 2016 budget before end of February, adding that lawmakers had planned to pass the budget on record time, but blamed the delay on recent misgivings about the document. “We are targeting end of February to round off everything about the 2016 national budget. If not for the talk about a missing budget, we would have gone far. But, we are still determined to pass the budget on time and that will be before the end of February,” he said. On PDP’s call for the impeachment of Buhari, he asked rhetorically: “Did we kill the PDP for what they did to us in the last 16 years? The call for the impeachment of the president by the PDP is what they are supposed to do. They are in the opposition. Buhari is the kind of leader the country wants. “His emergence is divine intervention. The game the PDP is playing is understandable. The budget is not missing.” Last week, the PDP urged the National Assembly to commence an impeachment process against President Buhari over the alleged involvement of his aide, Senator Ita Enang in changing of figures in the 2016 budget earlier submitted to a joint session on December 22. Speaking on the alleged missing budget, he re-echoed his earlier position that the budget was not missing, rather, the Senate committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions was mandated to carryout an integrity test on the two copies of the budget before the Red Chamber. “Not only that the budget was not missing, the budget cannot be missing. The budget comes in copies. The copy submitted by Mr. President cannot be missing. There are some issues that came later surrounding the budget. “We told the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to find out what happened and they discovered that there were two versions. What the president submitted as a bill is still there. Nothing has changed.” Source: http://www.zubbyblog.com/senate-to-pass-2016-budget-in-february-ndume/ |
