Politics / Buhari Won’t Spare Jonathan If Ex-president Is Proven Corrupt –presidency by azu12: 10:52pm On Jan 21, 2016
In Nigeria’s ongoing war against corruption, President Muhammadu Buhari will not spare anyone who has a case to answer, and his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, would face justice if guilty, presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina, has said.

Mr. Buhari has “no accord” to shield any corrupt person from prosecution.

“There is no accord,” he said, “if the corruption fight needs to get there (making Mr. Jonathan face justice), it will get there.”

Several top officials who served under Mr. Jonathan, as well as his political associates in the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party, are currently being tried, or investigated by the Economic and Financial crimes Commission, for corruption.

A major case involves a former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, accused of diverting $2.1 billion arms money, and sharing same to politicians and cronies of the former president.

According to investigators, Mr. Dasuki says he was authorized by Mr. Jonathan to release the money for the nation’s security programmes, and for the 2015 presidential campaign.

The spokesperson for the PDP, Olisa Metuh, has also said he received the payment after carrying out some assignments for the former president.

Those claims have raised questions whether Mr. Jonathan, whom Mr. Buhari assured during transfer of power in 2015, that he had nothing to fear, would face prosecution should it be proven he has a case to answer.

Mr. Buhari has also been accused of bias after against the PDP. The allegations gained fillip last week after his associate and party member, Jafaru Isa, was released by the EFCC despite facing same allegation as Mr. Metuh, the PDP spokesperson.

But Mr. Adesina denied the allegations against the president.

“There is no accord that if corruption is proven, it will not be tried,” he said of the former president. “With this president, nobody will be protected. And I underscore it, if it needs to get anywhere, it will get there.”

A relative of the kidnapped boy said according to Ojelabi’s 8 year old sister, she and her little brother were in their school waiting for their mother to come pick them up. When they got tired of waiting, they stepped out of their school compound where they met the kidnapper who told her their mother asked her to come and pick them up. Politics / We Can’t Fight Lassa Fever Like Ebola –minister by azu12: 10:32am On Jan 21, 2016
Health Minister, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has given reasons the Federal Government cannot deploy same method it used to fight and won the battle against Ebola virus in the battle against Lassa fever. The minister said while Ebola was imported into the country through only one person, Lassa fever is endemic in the country; hence the approach to the two diseases cannot be the same.
Adewole said this to State House correspondents inside the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

“We cannot win the battle against Lassa fever the same way we won the one against Ebola. Ebola happened to be a single importation to the country. Lassa fever is endemic in Nigeria. In 2012, we had upsurge in 26 states. So, it is there but, I can assure you that with what we have put in place this year, we will sign it off.”
The minister said current cases of the fever could not be said to be resurgence because the country had been having outbreaks with the highest of 1,700 cases recorded in 2012. Adewole said what has happened was that for the first time in the history of the country, the government was now being transparent and open on the cases.

Politics / Dasuki Drags FG To ECOWAS Court, Demands N500m Damages by azu12: 7:54am On Jan 21, 2016

•As judge orders DSS to produce him

Former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Mohammed Sambo Dasuki (retd), has dragged the Federal Government before ECOWAS Court in Abuja over his continued detention. He is also demanding payment of N500 million damages for alleged rights infringement.
This is even as a Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday ordered the government to produce him by February 16.
Dasuki is also urging the sub-regional court to order his release forthwith.

In the suit filed by his lawyer, Robert Emukpoeruo, the former NSA is urging the court to declare among others, that his continued detention in defiance of orders for his bail granted by three courts, and after fulfilling the bail conditions, was “unlawful, arbitrary and an egregious violation” of his human rights.

The applicant also urged the ECOWAS Court to hold that it was, “a most egregious violation of the treaty obligations” signed by Nigeria under and by virtue of its being a signatory to legal instruments, to have unlawfully detained him under a “de-humanizing condition” after he had been granted bail and met the conditions for his release.

Similarly, the former NSA would want the court to declare that the alleged invasion of his privacy, home and correspondence at his Abuja and Sokoto residences on July 16 and 17, 2015 and the “forceful and unlawful seizure” of his properties, “without any lawful order or warrant” constituted a gross violation of his fundamental rights and offended the country’s treaty obligations as a signatory to the listed legal instruments.

Meanwhile, Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court, Abuja yesterday ordered Dasuki be produced in court on February 16 following his absence in court without any reason.
The judge said it was mandatory for a defendant in a criminal matter to be physically present in court at every stage of the prosecution except where the presence was an excuse.
Dasuki’s counsel, Mr. Joseph Daudu (SAN), had also complained that his client was abducted by security agents six weeks ago to an unknown destination. He told Justice Ademola that since the ex-NSA was whisked away, all efforts by his family and his lawyers to access him had been scuttled.

Daudu recalled that in three different High Courts where Dasuki was arraigned by the Federal Government, his client was admitted to bail, regretting that till date, the government and its agents have refused to allow Dasuki go on bail. He urged the judge to compel the Federal Government and its agents to respect the court’s decision, having joined issues with the defendant in court.

Justice Ademola said: “I am worried that the accused is not here. I do not want to set a bad precedent. Except the court gives express order for the defendant not to be in court, the accused must be brought to court from wherever he is. The accused must be here because I am not sure if what I am doing right now in the absence of the accused is not an illegality.

“Government and whoever is concerned must endeavour to do the necessary thing. The accused having been formally charged in court, must be produced in court for trial on the appointed days in compliance with the provisions of the law,” he said.
Earlier, counsel to the Federal Government, Mr. Dikpo Okpeseyi (SAN), said he applied for withdrawal of an application he had filed, seeking revocation of bail granted Dasuki on November 3 last year.

The judge consequently struck out the application and announced that the ruling would be delivered on February 16 in a pending government application, seeking secret trial of the former NSA.

The government arraigned Dasuki on charges of unlawful possession of fire-arms, breach of trust and money laundering.
Meanwhile, Dasuki’s trial has been fixed for February 16 and 17 before Justice Ademola

Politics / Igbos Have Lost Their Position In Nigeria - Dr. Samfo Nwankwo by azu12: 7:24am On Jan 20, 2016
The Director General of Ikemba Ojukwu Centre, Owerri, Dr. Samfo Nwankwo has announced the convocation of a special Conference to identify, isolate and arrest the cause of backwardness of Ndigbo in the Nigerian nation, especially in the last 16 years.

He also disclosed that the Centre was putting finishing touches on a private member bill to be sent to all the Houses of Assembly in the South East to make the teaching and learning of Igbo language compulsory in all schools in Igboland.

Dr Nwankwo in a statement in Owerri, the Imo State capital regretted that Igbos who were on the commanding heights of the military politics, academia and commerce before Nigeria’s independence were now at the lowest rung in the nation’s socio-political and economic development.

He noted that apart from descending from such heights, the race was now suffering cultural identity crisis as the Igbo language was on the verge of extinction.

Politics / Buratai Justifies Shi’ites’ Killing, Says Army Acted Within Law by azu12: 7:52pm On Jan 19, 2016
The Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Tukur Buratai, on Tuesday spoke for the first time on the bloody clash between soldiers in his convoy and members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (also known as Shi’ites) in Zaria on December 12, 2015, justifying the action of his men which reportedly resulted in the death of scores of members of the sect.

Buratai, who spoke at the headquarters of the National Human Rights Commission in Abuja during the opening ceremony of the sitting of an investigative panel set up by the commission on the clash.

Buratai, who explained how his convoy was held hostage by members of the sect, said his convoy was blocked in Zaria. He added that his men acted within the rules of engagement in trying to clear the way.

He said, “The circumstances that led to the incident of December 12, 2015 have been well articulated by officers that were involved. I was in the convoy. It was my convoy, the convoy of the Chief of Army Staff.

“I left Dutse that morning, hoping to arrive Zaria on time, to attend the passing out parade of the 73 Regular Recruit of Intakes. But, the convoy was blocked when we entered the Zaria City.

“What transpired has been documented by the officers that were with me. They have also made their own statements. And they are here to give full account of what transpired. We are here because we respect human rights.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday said Nigeria under his leadership has made significant progress towards ending the Boko Haram insurgency since his assumption of office on May 29 last year.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President spoke at a meeting he with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki Moon, on the sidelines of the World Future Energy Summit holding in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Buhari said in collaboration with the Multinational Joint Task Force, the Nigerian Armed Forces have driven the terrorist group from Nigerian territory into “fall-back positions”.

“They (the insurgents) are currently not holding any territory today as we speak, ” the President reportedly told the UN scribe.

Buhari also told him that Nigeria will persistently pursue global action to reverse the drying up of Lake Chad and save the lives of those who depend on it for survival.

“With all due respect to our neighbours, Nigeria has been worst hit by the drying up of the Lake Chad and we are hoping that the global community will support the process of halting the drying up of the lake, ” he said.

Governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson yesterday accused his opponent in the government election, Chief Timipre Sylva, of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of engaging in extreme callous politicking.

Dickson also indicated that the souls lost in the election, deaths he said were not necessary, sobered him, which made him not to celebrate his victory.

“Whenever I think of the deaths of our own people, most of them killed because they supported me, I feel terribly sad and asked the people of the state that although their will prevailed and I won, we have to keep it low as a mark of honour to those souls who deserve to live and benefit from the democracy they contributed to enthrone.

Politics / Senate To Pass 2016 Budget In February –ndume by azu12: 5:38am On Jan 19, 2016
Senate Leader Ali Ndume, yesterday, disclosed that the upper legislative chamber will likely pass the N6.08 trillion 2016 budget into law latest February.

Ndume also described a recent call by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), that the National Assembly should commence an impeachment process against President Muhammadu Buhari, on alleged involvement in the budget controversy as ‘a joker’.

Addressing Senate correspondents, Ndume reiterated that Senate would conclude and pass the 2016 budget before end of February, adding that lawmakers had planned to pass the budget on record time, but blamed the delay on recent misgivings about the document.

“We are targeting end of February to round off everything about the 2016 national budget.‎ If not for the talk about a missing budget, we would have gone far. But, we are still determined to pass the budget on time and that will be before the end of February,” he said.

On PDP’s call for the impeachment of Buhari, he asked rhetorically: “Did we kill the PDP for what they did to us in the last 16 years? The call for the impeachment of the president by the PDP is what they are supposed to do. They are in the opposition. Buhari is the kind of leader the country wants.

“His emergence is divine intervention. The game the PDP is playing is understandable. The budget is not missing.”

Last week, the PDP urged the National Assembly to commence an impeachment process against President Buhari over the alleged involvement of his aide, Senator Ita Enang in changing of figures in the 2016 budget earlier submitted to a joint session on December 22.

Speaking on the alleged missing budget, he re-echoed his earlier position that the budget was not missing, rather, the Senate committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions was mandated to carryout an integrity test on the two copies of the budget before the Red Chamber.

“‎Not only that the budget was not missing, the budget cannot be missing. The budget comes in copies. The copy submitted by Mr. President cannot be missing. There are some issues that came later surrounding the budget.

“We told the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to find out what happened and they discovered that there were two versions. What the president submitted as a bill is still there. Nothing has changed.”
