PoliticsObama's Visit To Ghana Is As Symbolic As His Presidency by B118(op): 9:43am On Jul 15, 2009
Other than being a good talker, a Martin Luther wannabe, he's yet to convince me that he is more than "that black man who became president".

Exactly what was the point of his visit?, the money and time spent on preparing for his visit would have been better spent busying himself in his office doing, whatever it is thier overpayed job as presidents is.

There, I said it. Now sue me.

Wow shocked . If i've ever heard anything more annoyingly discouraging, I don't remeber it.
PoliticsMend; Human Rights Activists Or Just A Bunch Of Trigger Happy Separatists Group by B118(op): 8:34am On Jul 15, 2009
I used to be a bit in support of MEND but i can't help but be a little sceptical, i'm starting to think they are rather dodgy. I dont knw what it is, maybe its to do with the smerk of Okah's face and the fact that he's notdead yet. I mean by now he should have been being killed by the oh so currupt Nigerian polititians, instead he's being given amnesty (mmh)

If MEND was a half reasonable militant group the attack on lagos would have been a way to attract attension of all Nigerians. It would have been a message that one region's problem is all Nigerian's problem.

If they weren't heartless it would have seemed unneccssary to have fatality. If they're worth anything, thier purpose would have been a fight for Nigeria's resources to be well managed, shared equaly amongst all. They seem to be just another separatist group concerned only with the NIger Delta region, like 'sord everybody else'.

If we were all to follow the steps of MEND it'll be an outbreak of anarchy in Nigeria. As far as I'm concerned a man who solves his problem with a gun is a coward. Please MEND we can do without the blood shed

Somebody please enlighten me on thier code of conduct if i'm wrong.

@Kobojunkie

Not only land resource and population determine the strength of a country, I stated this earlier, but u cannot deny the importance of these factors, more important is how they are put to use.

Sleeping Giant in this context is simly a country that is seriously underachieving, do take time to read my last post properly then u'll know what I meant.

Wasn't it but a couple of decades ago that the Naira was equal to the Dollar, compare rates of Migration a few decades ago to the present day, Nigeria before and after the oil boom. Nigeria was Never so bad it was just some bad decisions and mismanagement along the way.

If Nigerians can't be enthusiastic about Nigeria we can all go ahead and wallow in hopelessness.
PoliticsRe: Is Nigeria Really This Bad? by B118: 9:17pm On Apr 21, 2009
@ wirinet

You seem to be atguing for the sake of winning the arguement so that you're completely missing my point,

i did not describe management and technology as potentials, I'm saying that a country with potential to be powerful just needs good management in order to harness its resources and intellect to develop technologically and in other sense, in the process become powerful.

Countries like England USA fought wars to claim land (history of England and scotland, Texas and mexico wars to claim land, how the man power from the chinese migrant is a vital part of the development of USA e.t.c Even Isreal and palestine were still at it of recent) so don't tell me population or possession of vast Land is not relevant to build-up of power.

Nigeria has, Land, agricultural friendly climate, man-power, mineral resources, potential tourist attractions e.t.c All these in relatively large amounts compared to even some developed coutries of the world, this is what gives it the potential to be powerful. USA for example is dependent on the imports from other countries which is why the financial crisis that started in the USA has spread to the rest of the world because the demand from the major importers has dropped. Ever heard the saying "when the USA coughs, the rest of the world sneezes".

By the way why is it so hard to accept that Nigeria is indeed the giant of Africa (though asleep). Like the other poster suggested, is it the inferiority complex, or just years of brain washing that the western world is superior.
PoliticsRe: Is Nigeria Really This Bad? by B118: 5:50pm On Apr 21, 2009
@wirinet
U missed out the word "potentially" while reading my post, Land mass, population and mineral resources are not a measure of powerhuh where do I even start to argue that, i mean come oooon. As for intellect i've met some intelligent and skilled Nigerians home and abroad, most of these people are working for companies in other countries because Nigeria doesn't offer them much and some are looking to get out of Nigeria, because Nigeria offers them nothing.

An example, Nigeria has crude oil, yes. However, how much did Nigeria invest in discovering the crude oil or building refinaries? what use is crude oil in its natural form?

We have a fertile land, sunshine and rainfall, what use is this if we don't develop good farming, i mean in the current global situation, Nigerians would have had a strong standing in the world by being the major suppliers of food, cash crops and mineral resources but we've eaten the cake long before we could have it

Another sad example, orange juice in a carton say, tropicana (note where it is always written in tiny prints on the carton "from concentrate", well except u buy the made in aba one lol); how much would 10 fresh oranges cost?, now this company buys these fruits at very low price from the farmers, squeeze them, then dry them (so that its easier to transport), and in the process of drying and all this palava a lot of the original nutrients from the orange is lost, it gets to the country they add water, some sugar and ascorbic acid or some other preservative e.t.c, and package it niiicely so that they now sell it back to WE, mumus, at 10 times the price albeit it containing less than 1/2 the nutrition of the original fruit which in the first instance grows naturally in the country or origin.

Hence my use of "potentially powerful" instead of "powerful"

And where i mentioned that the citizens also are part of the problem, Nigerians would pay more for anything imported and avoid anything "made in Nigeria", u know wot i'll leave this bit
PoliticsRe: Is Nigeria Really This Bad? by B118: 4:48pm On Apr 21, 2009
Nigeria isn't that bad. The sad thing is, Nigeria is a potentially powerful country cripled by mismanagement/stupidity/cruelty/greed, of its leaders (and citizens to some extent). Nigeria isn't "this bad" but it should be better than this. She's a giant lying dormant.

PoliticsRe: Revolution In Nigeria Has Commenced by B118: 10:06pm On Apr 20, 2009
Niger deltans are not stupid they were just unaware of what was going on. All they knew was that these people started comming to thier land and after a while thier water was not drinkable and thier once fertile land became barren. By the time they realised they'd been done over a lot of damage had been done.

Please choose ur words wisely before throwing out insults at a group of people that have suffered on behalf of the whole of Nigeria. They deserve much more respect, refering to them as stupid is simply spitting at Ken Sar-Wiwa's grave. Infact you should go over to his grave with some flowers right now (ok maybe that's pushing it lol)

Again, if we're going to kep saying "oil came from this part so they should get the benefit, gold came from here so they should get all the money, " we might as well divide up the whole damn country and give up on the whole phenomena called Nigeria.

mr. poster, its because we are not sentimental like westerners. We don't need humans to inspire us to dream, we just go ahead and do it. I watched the inaguration of Obama and i heard how he has inspired a lot of African Americans and a lot of Americans, in Nigeria its not so because of our unsentimental nature and we are not always blown away by romantic heroes like "Che", or Obama.

Right there is the worse thing plaging Nigeria, Nigeria's biggest problem, its like an inbuilt self-destructive force, RACISM, SEGGREGATION, HATERED FOR FELLOW COUNTRYMEN, HATERED FOR PEOPLE WHO DO NOT SHARE THE SAME OPINION AS URSELF. This kinda shit breaks my heart! come on when will we just be Nigerians, then we can go on to being Africans, then to being people,

and by the way which yeye oil money, how much of the oil money has actually benefited the country, even the very people who reside in the area from which the oil is being drawn.

and please tell me who exactly is "our" in the "our oil money" , u know just so I know who to go and blow up when shit goes down (lol)

ha finally!!

not that i am rejoicing at the thought of Nigeria being doomed. I am infact glad that we will now have something to divert our over interest in the black Gold, good ol agriculture.

However, now that we are looking for alternatives to crude oil, the next step will be biofuel. This is the part that pisses me off! the whole idea of burning food grown from the ground to feed engines to do things we have God given ability to do but we are too lazy to do. Burning food for luxuries we can do without.

Despite thier are many other options other than biofuel e.g hydrogen, uranium, biomass, they just cant be bothered to fund these researches.

Brazil can use millions of hectares to grow sugarcane for biofuel if they like, but i dnt care how green they claim this is, If anyone starts to burn food from my motherland to fuel cars I will be the first with a matchet in my hand heading to aso rock , UN, hell i might even beef with Obama himself damn the respect I have for him

Kobojunkie:
I have to disagree with you there,  Why does it seem harder for us to deal with our problems while it appears to be easier for those in America to deal with theirs? Why do they go scot free in Nigeria when they do wrong but we hear of governors, senators etc. in the USA that end up serving Jail term for their crimes and losing their office?
Right thier is my point, the WHY. The system of government in place seems to be working for them but it is obviously not working for us, there is something wrong somewhere, we need to go back to the drawing board and form a different strategy to deal with the situation we face,

Where we're comming from is inevitably a contributing factor to where we are going to. So dont ever try to push history to the side. I'll quote Obama here

"Our challenges may be new, the instruments with which we face them may be new, but the values on which our success is based, honesty& hardwork, courage & fairplay, unity, those values are OLD, those values are TRUE"

Read Obama's biography he went back to Africa to find his roots and this part was a great contributor to who he is now, Mohammed Ali also had to go back home to find peace with himself. Its all about how it all started dont ever push aside history.

Even the Americans the british, i'm talking the real aristocrats who know the value of land, culture, tradition and values, they dont joke with it, they hold on to thier culture and history so they know where they started from they have a foundation which is why they are at a different stages in the cycle from a country like Nigeria, which is why we have a different story. A different struggle.

The very structure of Nigeria, the way its being built, the people, the resourcess. Nigeria is like a richly seasoned soup with no salt so we can't taste the essence. Those simple values of old which we ignore in our strife to be western, giving respect to the strife of our ancestors somewhere there lies the salt.
PoliticsRe: Why Did God Pack Foolish People Into A Single Country And Call It Nigeria? by B118: 1:00am On Jan 22, 2009
Sky Blue I am not in anyway excusing the situation in Nigeria not at all, and I am all for the idea of the people standing up against thier opressors.
But you will be right to agree with me that thier some things that go on in Nigeria that are so "in your face" "don't you people get it we dont care about your problems we just want to fill our pockets and leave" for example I watched a show on channel 4 the other day that made me cry my eyes out (and i'm not talking titanic type cry my eyes out lol). Children where being brutalized and murdered because they are accused of being witches, there were several complaints to the local government ot do something but they ignored until the international journalist got involved even after that it was minimal effort. It was so obvious thier were mutilated dead bodies of chidren all around These are ppl being brain washed by religious beliefs, and many more such problems how do you compare the kind of problem to something like " a maniac got drunk and shot his wife in the head for no good reason" I'm not saying the western world or the like do not have thier own problems too i'm just saying we cant just simply say if this is what they do we must do the same

Yes we have real ghettos in the states , where people have diabetes related complications and cannot get treatment because they have no welfare, thier are people having to live on welfare (we dont even get welfare in Nigeria). Thier are people selling thier hair in parts of russia for money. I am not down playing the seriousness of thier issues. but in Africa in place of some1 dying from obesity because they ate too much or from diabete because they had too much sugar (could be other causes such as genetic) we have people starving to death or sufferring because thier once clean stream water or healthy soil has been destroyed in the process of crude oil refining, (wont even continue on that too tragic)

Another example is in the uk they have to put a law in place that prevents kids under certain age from purchasing alcohol. Nigeria doesnt need this kind of law becaue for one thins thier is no means to enforce this, thier is hardly any need for it anyway because we dont have cases of kids vandalizing the bus stop due to intoxication, we dont even have such bus stops to worry about in the first place.

Saying "Nigeria isn't so bad" is a serious case of denial. Nigeria is a big "agbaya", a sleeping giant that needs to wake up soon.

Looks like I'm having difficulty getting my point across but hope u get a bit of d gist

@ boss thanks for that post

"Yes they do. But they’ve not been oppressed by their leaders and their leaders don’t run away from problems. Most of their leaders that mess up actually get punished. Unlike in Nigeria. Loot and go free."

stop trying to compare Nigeria or Africa with the western world we face a very different situation we have a different story what works for that world doesnt always work for this world.

How bout we all just refuse to vote untill someone who will truely make a difference comes along. Its like we always just settle lesser of the evil like some1 mentioned earlier.

Might not make a lot of difference but if we do pull it off it will show some form of unity and send out a message, will also make bbc news lol

mh i wonder what would happen in the case of zero votes for either candidates, would the person in office just remain?
PoliticsRe: The First Step Towards Making Nigeria Great by B118: 11:27pm On Jan 21, 2009
The fact that there are so many topics going on in this forum with people giving strong views shows that we really do want a change and that we really do believe in this phenomena called Nigeria. But why is it taking so long why are we still so quiet?.

It doesnt have to be one big sudden boom it all starts from people doing things in thier local communities, development programmes, if the formally elected officers wont do anything why cant we get people together in our own communities to start our own movement. There are young people if inspired will get involved in a possitive movement that is going to bring about a good change.

If there is something that needs doing in an area we get people together to either raise money or workforce together. If this is going on in every little community both rich and poor working together gradually we will grow together and eventually be strong enough to stand against the leaders that continue to opress us. Unselfishness will play a big part in this growth, its not about what will i eat its about what will we eat. If we expect someone in power despite the temptation to show human compation, we must be able to show a lot more of it unless we be hypocrites.

Like an intellligent man said, those values of old; honesty, courage, hardwork, fairplay, patriotism, unity, as simple as they may be, they go a long way in dealing with the challenges we fac however new they may be.
