BoluwGoldenFarm:
Good work
I just planted some for home use last week and l bought half milk cup of dwarf type of 50 days flowing from Ojoo market for N100.

My question:
Do people buy powdered dry Okra
I once bought some years ago and I regret it because it was full of sand and small size stones
The powdered dry Okra if we'll prepared it is very sweet particularly on the second second day and very easy to cook by boiling water and add the powdered dry Okra when water is boil ,then add dryer pepper, red oil and after 3 minuets add locust beans or ogiri or Maggie, fish or meat, ponmo , crawfish then leave to boil for 2 minutes after you add salt
This can be use to eat any swallow food like Eba,tuwo, startch, fufu, Semovita, pando yam etc

If we can package the powdered dry Okra for sale it makes a lot of sense.

I have 10 tomatoes plants , 5 pepper stands with 10 okra stands, 2 scent leave plants ,2 bitter leaves stands and 3 onion stands in my garden at home , l plan to also plant Ugwu next week.
You can do the same then channel all your kitchen waste water to your backyard garden.
A friend did same time and he harvest plantain,& banana for the family every 3 weeks year round from his garden at home, if your house is not fence just get old car tires, stack 4 on each other and fill with sand to make a fence around the garden.
With the above you can reduce your feeding cost by 30% .if you have local Fowl or rabbits at home, good luck .

We need to do more of critical thinking & creative thinking on a weekly basis to survive

Hello nairalanders,
Gone are the days we suffer much at the hands of planting and making little or no gain.

Advanced organic fertilizers have really made this very easy and possible.

My okro plants are full of life and always green.
People keep asking me how come your okro grows every single day without slowing down.

I just tell them na God o!

I never knew there where organic fertilizers when mixed together can really boost plants growth faster than the normal rate it suppose to grow.

Anyways story for another day,
please all okro farmers lets meet here and discuss issues on ground.

What are the challenges and how to tackle them,
what are the times to make it big farming okro?
How do we get fast maturing dwarf okro seeds?

Do we have low germination rate due to bad soil or weather?

Where can one get bulk buyers of okro?
Do i have to join any union before i start selling my okro to retailers?

How much capital do i need starting up an okro farm?

Can one prune okro to make it grow more pods faster?

All this are questions people ask on a daily basis.

Okro farming to me is profitable,
even if you can start with only one plot filled with okro then i would say you are on a long thing.

Just be ready to be harvesting them every 1-2 days when it matures to full size.

Maybe you can employ neighbours to help you with that.

Please all okro farmers are invited here so we can really share opinions thanks

AgricultureRe: Keeping Bees For Honey, Hobby by Babakolanut(m): 10:07pm On Jan 19, 2023

I’ve never tried keeping bees on my own, but have thought about beginning beekeeping for some time. Local honey is incredibly beneficial nutritionally speaking, not to mention delicious. Additionally, I would be able to harvest honey from my own hives without heating it (raw honey has the most benefits). However, we’ve lived within a homeowners’ association since owning property and while we may have been able to get away with honeybees all along, we don’t really want to test our neighbors’ patience any further — they’ve already been more than kind about our backyard chickens.

My dad has been a beekeeper for decades. He harvested and sold his bees’ honey for many years, but now has retired to backyard beekeeping for the honey and to enjoy his hobby. From his many years of keeping bees both professionally and on a smaller scale, Dad is a wealth of information and wisdom on beekeeping. His insights range from the most practical suggestions to the more philosophical musings. It is my wish to begin a hive of my own with my dad’s mentoring when we move to our next property and are able to expand our homesteading efforts through a larger garden and more animals.

For those who garden for food or have an orchard, keeping honeybees is one way to help ensure that bee-pollinated plants are able to maximize production. One’s own hives are an ideal way to increase self-sufficiency by assuring better crop pollination, as well as with the production of honey: a sweetener, natural antibiotic, allergy suppressant, and key ingredient in many home remedies.

Have you considered beekeeping, as a hobby or for the honey, or a side income through honey sales?

AgricultureRe: How To Produce Your Own Honey By Simple Beekeeping At Home by Babakolanut(m): 9:32pm On Jan 19, 2023
atnerjennac24:
If you are looking for a rewarding and therapeutic hobby, you must consider beekeeping. Surely, it would take some extra effort on your part, but you might be surprised at how fun and easy it could be especially when the time comes that you get to eat honey you produce at your own backyard or garden.

However, beekeeping at home is not for everyone, especially those who are not that familiar about it. If you intend to soon get into this unique but rewarding hobby, you have to be familiar about it and learn the basic. Surprisingly, it would not be as difficult and as tedious as you may think it to be.

Before getting into the task, find out if there are existing local and city codes that regulate beekeeping at homes. You may not be aware yet at this point but there could be a limit imposed by the authorities on the number of beehives allowed in your neighborhood. If the city does not allow keeping of beehives, you may ask friends or farmers in nearby areas where you could be allowed to put beehives on their properties sans the restrictive limits.

Preparing for beekeeping

As you get into the steps to realize your goals, you have to address the challenges in the planning and preparation stage. The first concern would be the equipment to be used. Fortunately, there are now commercially and readily available equipment for bee farming.

Begin with new hives along with new frames. Opting to buy the new equipment as you start into the hobby will spare you from unnecessary and unexpected headaches in the future. Used or second-hand equipment could be cheaper or could even be taken for free but take note that those may also come with problems that beginners may not be able to instantly recognize and fix.

Then, invest in protective gear. Check out this list of gears that you must buy before you get into bee farming. A bee suit must come complete with gloves and hood when you buy a set. Beehives must have boxes, bottom boards, covers, supers, frames that come with patterned foundations for wax. Also invest in a hive tool and a smoker.

When to start

Another consideration to take note of is the timing of your entry into the bee farming hobby. It is not advisable to start just any time you want to do so. That is because spring time is the best time to start beekeeping. This is strategic because the season is the time that bees start to get really busy collecting honey.

You should aim to start them up immediately when the weather warms up. This is the time when they could also take more than enough time to accumulate or build up their hives strong. Then, put their hive in an area where they would take an open and undisturbed flight path. Expect to have thousands of those bees coming in and going out of their hive. Be sure the hive is at least 15 feet away from your house.

Buying your bees

Of course, beekeeping at home would not push through without the bees. You can actually buy bees you would grow into hives in your own backyard or garden. Some people prefer to go out to catch a live swarm. But for beginners, that is not advisable. Instead, order a ‘nuc,’ a queen bee with actual bunch of worker bees. They would be enough to start a massive honey-producing bee colony.

When in the market to buy bees for the hobby, be sure to specific purchasing Italian bees. They are somehow a standard in the U.S. and other countries, especially for hobbyists and bee farmers. These bees easily accumulate honey, produce other worker bees, and are quite easier to handle compared to all other bee species. If you need assistance and guidance in choosing the right bees, you could always ask experienced beekeepers you know for recommendations and insights.

Taking care of bees and harvesting honey

After you have set everything for your bee colony, you do not have do anything to take care of them because they would do it their selves. Just be sure the hive is not disturbed and is not easily reached and played with by kids. You may also occasionally check on your beehive to see if they are doing well.

When the hive has gotten too big for its frame and you see that honey is already dripping, take it as an indication that harvest time has come. You could actually harvest honey any time of the year, but ideally, the activity is best done during fall. To take honey from the hive, simply scoop out the honeycomb and return to its original position to enable your bee colony to work on it again.
