Oyo government is spending billions doing urban renewal and building new roads, these monies can be channelled into gradually building a new capital city

There are more important issues to tackle in Nigeria than urban planning.
Insecurity will consume a lot to tackle.
Lack of electricity will take alot of funds.
Accessible road network can't be overlooked

Transportation system like metro rail or brt buses in major town need to be provided.

Law enforcement need to be taking serious.
When you tackle all these, urban system go dey arrange itself come before you even start the planing.

I would love to ask, now the naira is gaining strength against the dollar. Does it translate to the fact that the government will stop paying subsidy to maintain petrol prices and reduce NEPA bills?

Governments are spending trillions building useless roads and bridges, these trillions should be used to develop new settlements, palliative measures can be done on existing roads

Politics / Most Nigerian Cities Are Dilapidated Beyond Repair by babasolution: 9:29am On Apr 02
I just saw a thread on ABA, how the government is trying to construct abandoned roads. What I saw is cringy, the reconstructed roads only have functional signifance aside that it made no difference to the development of the city, the city still looks as bad as it always was, this goes for every other city in Nigeria, including Lagos. Except Abuja.

Despite efforts by some governors to reconstruct roads and bridges, it feels like pouring water into a basket.

Most state capitals were totally unplanned, and allowed to be dilapidated severely.
even the former nations capital Lagos was unplanned and is now beyond repair especially the mainland.

This goes with my gross with the older generation who watched and oversaw the gradual disintegration and dilapidation of these cities.

Nigerian cities are gone, they are too dilapidated to be repaired, all the major cities especially in the south and Middlebelt are gone except Abuja, they are in such dysfunctional state they are at best upgraded slums.

All Nigerian cities are so full of shacks, dirts, stenchy open gutters, old buildings etc.

It's so messy it can't be recovered, its like trying to beautify a dumbsite.

Instead of wasting billions on useless roads and bridges, these monies should be used instead on the gradual development of new capital cities in Nigeria that will be planned from inception, otherwise Nigeria will remain a ugly mess forever.

Infact it's even advisable so that there'll be competition.
An average Igbo trader is not scared of competition and will always figure out strategies to beat his competitors.
trust me if cement license is made public today, it'll fall to 2k or less because an average igbo man will enter the business and bring it down through competition.
An igbo man won't mind selling cost price just to retain a customer then with time start putting profits gradually to the buyer and before the buyer knows this, they're already hoodwinked with the seller.
you'll be wondering why they're patronizing only him.
some will say na juju but na strategy.
come to any igbo dominated market, there's something we call lines.
you'll see more than 100 shops selling the same thing in serial but trust me an average trader in that line has their customers and makes huge sales daily irrespective that they're all selling same thing.
till today most people don't understand how igbos pull this off.
it's not arrogance but tactics.
so sweetheart other tribes are free to enter trade but don't cry when the competition becomes stiff oo.
you wan follow igbo man compete for business?
i ga etikwa anya m anya m oo

You can be defeated in trade, what is working for you is your population, while the other populous tribes like the Yorubas are not competent in trade, their are many minority tribes that will give igbos are run for their money.

Now,it has come to my notice that the igbos who are traders in many regions living peacefully and earning their livelihood from patronage of other regions and tribe have grown this blatant arrogance, and are fund of castigating other tribes forgetting that a lot of their prosperity rest on other tribes including foreign countries.

What if other tribes go into big time trade like the igbos, afterall many of our ancestors where actually traders in the past.

The monopolisation of trade by the igbos is making them arrogant

This derision against other tribes online must stop, limit your banter to your banter mates the Yoruba

Education in government run schools and healthcare in government run hosptial facilites, as well as your road transport (that's why you don't have toll gates).

A good percentage of people do not attend public run schools especially recently,
How many roads were built?
The lekki toll they collected, what was it used for? No evidence it was judiciously used,as there was no expansion or maintainance on the road for years.
the investment in those sectors by governments is even generally low compared to say what they invest in national assembly.

Why can't for example the so called hajj subsidy of 90 billion not be poured into such public facilities.

There's likely to be another 90billion for christain pilgrimage. Is that not simply poor management

In the past they invested well in those sectors and there's been multiple opportunities to create alternatives which they didn't,

And the government doesn't have money because it still spends ton subsidising, which drives away the free market, which would make us more money if allowed to do so.

And then we have a poor tax to gdp ratio

SO, loans.

Most nigerians believe in taxes.

And the owners would just simply share the money, and decieve themselves by building large buildings . They want to be like Dubai, not like Japan, china or germany or even the USA.

And it would be the same old cycle again.

(Note that it does not mean I disagree with resource control).

And for the most part the government controls the resources. Even with resource control, the regional government would control the resources...which is what most people want. Still socialism.

We have to give up our love for cheap things first, then we can talk.

Please mention the things government subsidises apart from previously fuel and electricity?

Most Nigerians also believe that the natural resources of the country should be controlled by the owners instead of a central government who appropriate all to itself and distributed as it deems fit.

It seems you fo not understand the meaning of socialism and capitalism. It has to do more with who control of the countries resources between the prople and the government, and the distribution of such resources.

Industrialisation and free market ,
Were over the years refineries couldn't work
Ajaokuta steel couldn't be completed
No power
Poor roads and rail

Look these things are not rocket science
There's no commitment from the colonial GENERATION to make these things work.

90billion for hajj, there's simply no excuse for that.

Nigerians like to make simple things complicated,

I was watching a programming on security operations in USA, in a particular case, they did manual thorough labour intensive work in their security process to catch a particular criminal, over here people will start giving excuses of how we lack advanced technology to carry out such operations, when even in US they were using good old manual analog process.

You don't always need advanced economic processes to get a country to work.

You can do the good old management and priority allocation of resources econs 101 to do a lot of good works.

Nigerias case is simply misplacement of priorities and failure by over religious inclination of the colonial GENERATION elites.

The prioritise religion over everything

1. Well, development comes from letting the free market do it's thing and also promoting the industrial development and the export of manufactured goods and services

2. Your leaders chose excessive subsides and welfarist policies which you like because at the end we have a large poor population that needed uplifting

3. It worked but it also did not work. As a result we have a heavily indebted economy

4. And yes stealing is happening because most of our money does not come from tax. If it came from tax, people would be incentivise to hold their government accountable. Instead it comes from resources and as such no incentive

5. There really isn't enough money. We should be earning 300 billion or more dollars per annum. Not the measly 50 billion we earn . And the stealing that happens makes it worse.

Well

1.Government does subsidise electricity. It's not something I support(because in return discos cannot charge above the cost of production and make a profit, meaning the mess in the sector results), but they do subsidise electricity.

2.People should pay for their hajj or christian pilgrimage, not govenrment. Government hajj subsides have and always have been a waste of money.

But you'll say there's no money for development, that's goes my point that the colonial GENERATION due to their over religious disposition have misplaced priorities choosing to develop religions over other more important sectors.

Where did they get the money from,if there's no money? Even if they borrowed why will they borrow to fund religion? The colonial GENERATION are ruining Nigeria

Sarkin Yaji some historical narrative shows that he was a Berber while some referred to him coming from Bagdad, present day Iraq. That doesn't interest me much. My question has been Why is it that despite that a major part of Northern are Hausas and yet have their over 400 different Languages.

That means the attribution of their being Hausa is because they speak Hausa, it's one thing to be able to speak a language it is another thing to belong to an ethnicity.

Hausa is spoken in Ghana, Cote D Voire, Eritrea and about 12 other countries does that make them Hausas. The answer should be no.

It's just mere unifying of the people which was carefully packaged and established by the Conquerors of the People and further instituted by the Colonial Masters for the purpose of Control

What am saying is that, there's bound to be native Hausa tribe, probably even if their tribe is smaller than it is portrayed, there's got to be a native Hausa tribe.there cannot be a language without its native speakers, just like Latin was native to the Romans but was spoken at a time in virtually all of Europe. There are native Hausa's but they might not be as large as people claim.

As for sarkin yaji ,according most historical accounts he learnt Islam from Algerian Berber traders, therefore he was most likely a native ,so the claim that he was a foreigner is highly unlikely.

Well, if subsides work, they would have let our power sector and refineries work, won't they.

Obvoiusly they are not working.

Also, subsides fuel corruption...because they involve something called free money.

They do production subsides, not price controls, and pay subsidy to cover the resulting loss (which we do here, and said subsidy does not cover the losses resultant).

Yes, because when you run an government whose sources of revenue are from what raw material we sell, and with a mandate to 'share the revenue' corruption naturally results. Because he or she who is closer to the sharing will benefit more than end user.

Whereas if most of our income was from taxes...people would be incentivsed to keep an eye on how their money is spent, and the government won't do wuru wuru...because any stepping out of line, and kasala go burst for their head.

Allowing a free market provides the disposable income for things like taxes to be paid.

Well, some churchpeople do so, some do not. Don't tar everyone with the same brush.

90bn for hajj subsidies, but they should tax and tax and tax, they have 90bn for hajj but not for electricity

What you are saying doesn't add up at all, okay for example I know of the Bayajidda Legend and the narrative of the Hausa Bakwai
They aren't referred to as Hausas originally but Hausa speakers:
That is
Daura
Kano
Katsina
Zaria (Zazzau/Zegzeg)
Gobir
Rano
Hadejia (Biram)

Also we know of Hausa Banza meaning Hausa Bastard or Illegitimate States based on the fact that they called them their slaves, this includes;

Zamfara
Kebbi
Yauri
Gwari
Kwararafa
Nupe

The historical narrative doesn't add up at all, my fact finding made me realize that it was created solely for the purpose of control and nothing more. The Fulani updating the Oral Myth passed from Generation to generation.

The Question is this how come Nupe are considered to be Hausas when they don't speak Hausa, how come Gwari are considered as Hausas when they don't speak Hausa.
Bauchi alone as a State has 78 different languages.

I remember coming in contact with a Young Man, a native of Katsina who told me he isn't an Hausa neither a Fulani and I was shocked.

I repeat again Hausa is just a language spoken even in Sudan and Eritrea nothing more than that. The only sad part of it is that many northerners have lost their ethnicity and originality to the invasion of the Berbers who came in to establish the Hausa and Fulani kingdom

So which tribe is sarkin yaji from, who institutionalised islam in Kano in the 14th century? Was he a Berber?,how can there be a language and no tribe native to that language?

The states you called are like any other large tribe in Nigeria such as the Yoruba or Igbo with different sections ,people must understand that a tribe doesn't have to be from one ancestor.

Well, that's why you won't see development.

The sad thing is things cost money. At the end all developed countries, religion or no, are propelled by the free market

Stop blaming religion or the lack thereof by the way

By the way, a production subsidy is paid to a company to reduce production cost. We don't do that here. We force the power and petrol sector to sell at a loss and then a subsidy is paid to cover the loss without taking into account the rising production costs and by extension cost of subsidies

A production subsidy would have involved government giving cash or grants to a working refinery or power station. Doesn't happen here.

And by the way it is the colonial generation that you hate that are responsible for subsides. Infact they even subsidized more than we do today. They stopped because it worsened our debt. And because we ran out of money.

It cost money but they have 12billion dollars to be spent on the power sector in Obasanjo tenure which was stolen.

There no money but they spend billions for rice palliative

There's no money but they spend lavishly buying cars for legislators.

And their subsides are mainly production subsides which are paid for by tax revenue and which are different from the consumption subsides we practice here.

The problem with consumption subsides is simple. They can't cover for the cost of production and actual sale price difference. Result is massive issues with industries and whole sectors.

Oh and Nigerian subsides are not funded by tax. Mostly from oil money and loans . And they tend to breed more and more loans.

You really don't like the free market

Tax on what exactly, what amenities does the government provide that they will collect tax for?

Subsidy in Nigeria is mainly on fuel or electricity which are energy( production subsidies)

What else do they subsidize,
Where are the refineries, why did they ruin it
Where is electricity
