I intend writing GRE this year. Pls, a good samaritan should send materials to my email : datasplashsme@gmail.com

Pls....God bless

Hey dear. The materials are scattered here on the thread. I also intend writing but I am having issues reading alone.

Pls are you or anyone here interested in having a study partner or we can create a study group on any app to converse and share ideas, questions and all. Especially with this Lockdown and the plenty free time that has been made available to us.

If you are in you could reply in on this post. I would really love a group of similar minds that are really ready to study.

Thanks guys.

safet:
Good day everyone.

So I took the GRE on 1st November at Jkk center in Lagos. Had a score of 299, Q-152|V-147|AWA-3.0.

I was so disappointed with my score, I was discouraged about furthering any of my applications. You know, that ginger just disappeared, I was loath to even get recommendation letters from my proposed recommenders. However, I would like to highlight some of the must "dos" and "don'ts" in preparing for the GRE. Please forgive any blunders, also these are just some views I agree with, [as compiled by Profagas]. wink

Some would argue that the GRE is damn EASY even going ahead to compare with JSCE level. But others state different, saying that GRE is so HARD. Well, you can not be sure until you test your legs in it, right? The GRE is a standardized test, meaning they are restricted. They have a standard, they have a particular number of tricks up their sleeves. So the goal must be to discern/identify as much tricks as possible before the test day.

For the Quants, acing the GRE requires three things: 1. Concept 2. Speed 3. Discernment

Concept is the actual knowledge you need to know, the rules, formula, theories, method of approach you should know. Speed is completing the task within a specified period of time, you should know of course, the GRE is a timed test. Discernment, meanwhile is the ability to quickly see the answers by inspection, ability to quickly know you’re solving in the wrong way, ability to quickly strike off wrong answers, and the ability to be able to make correct guesses. This is the most important. The gist is if you know all the concepts, and you are fast, but can't discern, you will keep falling for the tricks laid down by ETS. You can finish a section with 10 minutes to spare and get a 9/20. I was so good with the concepts but speed and discernment were my Achilles heel.

There are several prep companies with different books, a lot of them. They all have their weak points and strong points. So number one is the official ETS materials; the trio of the Official guide, official quants practice questions and the official verbal practice questions. You should be over familiar with the content of these books. You should’ve solved all the questions there. All of it, they are the most trustworthy folks. You also need the GRE Maths review, they are also from ETS.

For quants, it’s a worldwide concession, Manhattan 6 books and the 5 lb book of practice question are the best for the concepts. Then you need to watch Magoosh lecture videos. It’s not really about reading, it’s about solving questions. So you should pay attention to questions and HOW THEY ARE SOLVED. Very important. HOW THEY ARE SOLVED. You should watch the Magoosh practice questions videos for this. There are different ways to solve a question and only one ETS way of solving.

The verbal section doesn’t have a formula, no fixed pattern like quants. Just there to frustrate good people. But it’s the GRE. So it can be aced also. For Verbal, Manhattan is quite weak, but you should try to read them (books 7 and cool. For RC which is the toughest set of questions in verbal, Kaplan is the god. Kaplan chapter 7. For SE and TC, you need to memorize vocabs, a lot of them. Use Magoosh Flashcards on your phone, if you have more time, you can check out Manhattan 1000 and Barron 1000 word list. That should be enough. Help your pacing by answering SE and TC questions first within the first 10 minutes, then the remaining 20 minutes for RC. Also, short passages before long passages.

For AWA, the best is Princeton review.

The point is you don’t need plenty materials. You don’t. In fact, some materials are point blank bad for you. They don’t set ETS-like questions. Don’t use anyhow material you see or mock test you see. Whatever it is you are looking for, is in Manhattan, Magoosh, Kaplan, Princeton, and the ETS materials. That is all. THAT IS ALL. Others are just repetition or bad for you. Don’t spend time going through several sources, reading same thing over and over.

Conclusively, PRACTICE! PRACTICE!! PRACTICE!!! You don't want to be like me who prepared for GRE for aggregate 5 weeks with an 8-4 job. Of course you want to pray about it. Believe me it works. You’ll want to be assured that the Almighty has your back, not even just for the GRE but even graduate studies as a whole.

Create time for yourself, but that doesn't mean you have to stop living life. Be happy. Don't kill yourself. You don't need overnight, don't let it affect your life. It's a terrible thing to be sacked because of GRE overnights. It's just a test. People have gotten full funding with 299. I know there are schools I can apply to. cheesy wink

Let me put my profile here. Please contact me if you have useful information for me. You can also contact me if you have specific enquiries about the GRE, or like to get a memo when Leo Messi wins his 7th Ballon D'or.

Looking at applying for PhD in Immunology/Virology/Cancer therapy.
UG- Microbiology, 4.39/5.00 (3.63/4.00 wes unofficial)
GRE- 299, Q-152|V-147|AW-3.0

I need your advice. We all need to follow our dreams. Thanks.

Cheers.

Special mention to the creators and members of this hub. 2014-date, no small feat. Danjaninja, happyday, sirriddy, et al.

Okay guys, so i finally did the much dreaded anticipated SHL test and OMG ...

So I have been preparing for the numerical for quite a while, cause i know one of my weakest point is solving mathematics under duress. No matter how much of it i know, once i see a timer, its like my brain wants to start going on a speed race and then blank lipsrsealed. so no surprises at all that the numerical to me is not so so. But i want to stay positive and hope the average scores ould have me on the top list embarassed

Contrary to popular belief, the verbal was a breeze through for me, well the past questions i got from here and friends really helped much. All in all practice under tension makes perfect I guess.

I wish all of us luck o and to those who haven't keep practicing with your calendar in check...

All I can do now is to be observing sha. If PWC thinks that ooin I did well, then somebody's daughter would start preparing for next stage, if not na to dey carry wait for another opening.

All the best to us all, as we hope, pray and wait.... grin grin grin grin

As much as the motive behind the whatsapp study group seems genuine, i advice we don't fall into that temptation. soon this place would be inundated with requests to join the group. Also the tendency to share important/ fast info with your study team is much more higher, thereby leaving this place super dry beeko. Abeg make we maintain this thread, for the sake of posterity. I know how reading through the experience and basic events from previous threads has helped to sharpen my knowledge on how likely events may unfold.

@rachaelfst nice story I happened to see this story on fp on Sunday night and with just a click I was wowed. Though I missed lots of updates even the concluding part cos it seems you have removed them. Luckily for me, am the kind of person that reads the end of a story before starting it, which is why i was able to know the end before the beginning (omo alpha&omega). I really love your work and appreciate what you are doing here.Though Anike is one story I didn't get to finish.

Am not a follower of the literature session of NL but I would really love if you could mention me on your next work. The comments here are so hilarious, made me wish I was here from the beginning, though I don't like suspense kwa. Thanks much for an interesting read. More ink to ur pen.

Me: I looked at a couple of schoo....

VO: Does not let me finish. Says "I don't have time for that, I want to know why this school of all the schools you looked at."

Me: Yes, that is what I was about to answer.

Me: did not want to give her the canned answer of class size etc or their ranking in engineering or my course, neither do I tell her about the Prof that wanted me 'cause I am livid at this juncture. So I say "well, after acquiring my scholarship, I was looking for a reasonably priced highly-rated school that was within my sponsor's budget" [did that to just mention my scholarship jare].

VO: [Eyes bulging now], what scholarship? [Says this and looks at the I20 while at it]

Me: I have a full govt scholarship which will take care of all my spendings, I mean tuition and stipend for the duration of my program.

Wow am super happy for you Sir. Patience and persistence surely pays off in your case. Woe. Your story is amazing.
