For Interested and Motivated Applicants.

Post picked up from Victor Ogunmola's (A Geoscientist at Exxon Mobil, USA) Linkedin page through his I-scholars initiative

Are you a Nigerian Graduate? How self-driven are you? Do you desire to pursue a graduate study abroad especially in the USA? Are you prepared to write the required exams? Have you got the aptitude but limited by the requisite resource?

If your answers are yes to all these questions, then read on.

This year, i-Scholar Initiative (ISI) plans to sponsor as many possible well qualified candidates for one or a combination of two of the three required tests for foreign grad school programs; Graduate Records Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

In Scope
Each selected candidate will be sponsored for a GRE or GMAT depending on their choice of grad programs.
To be sponsored for a TOEFL, the following conditions apply:
GRE candidates- a minimum of 300 cumulative scores in GRE will automatically qualify a candidate for TOEFL sponsorship.
GMAT Candidates: a minimum of 720 cumulative scores in GMAT will automatically qualify a candidate for TOEFL sponsorship.
If you qualify for a TOEFL, you must be prepared and ready to write the exam latest 6 weeks after your GRE or GMAT exam.

Requirements
Provide a 1-2 page statement of purpose demonstrating your self drive and clarity of your academic pursuit and career goals.
A graduate from a Nigerian accredited university with a minimum of Bachelor Degree; Second Class Upper Division or Higher.
Provide a clear plan on your preparation and strategy for writing and passing the exam(s) with excellent results if selected. Your draft plan must also include the specific time you wish to write the exams and begin to apply for foreign grad programs.
A letter of recommendation from a University Professor/Don who has a direct knowledge of your aptitude, academic records and leadership/volunteer involvements.
In addition to all the documentary evidences of the above identified requirements, also attach the most recent resume and academic records including copies of your FIRST DEGREE transcripts.

Successful candidates should be prepared and ready to write the exam(s) latest by August 2020.

How to Apply
Send application through an email to : ischolarinitiative19@gmail.com
Make GRE or GMAT the Subject of your Email based on the exam sponsorship you are applying for.
You should and must assemble ALL your required documents and send everything together as an attachment(s) in a SINGLE email. In other words, your application would be assessed based on the contents of your first email.
Where possible, send all attachments in .pdf format.

The Process/What to Expect
Application remains opened until March 31st midnight CST.
Received applications will be assessed and reviewed in April- A representative of ISI may contact candidates to conduct interviews if/where/when necessary.
Successful candidates will be announced in May
ISI will connect every successful scholar with seasoned mentors to help navigate admission processes.
In June, ISI will engage with and do the exam(s) registration on behalf of the successful candidates directly with the Educational Testing Services (ETS).
All scholars are required to keep their mentors in the loop of progress including but not limited to important milestones such as exam scores, admission applications/funding offers etc.
Each successful scholar would be required to accept and sign a perjury oath/agreement accepting a liability if discovered that he/she has misrepresented any material facts during or after the selection process.

What is not Promised/Out of Scope
We are unable to provide full Scholarships to study abroad- but your good performance in GRE or GMAT and TOEFL could potentially get you fully funded grad programs with the university of your choice. We would work with you in navigating the admission process.
GRE/GMAT/TOEFL- each of the exams provides an opportunity to freely and directly send your exams scores to a certain number of schools you indicate during registration. However, you would have to personally pay the application fees for any additional schools you might want to apply to after this.
Best Practices
It is important to read very carefully and follow all the instructions highlighted above.
You don't need to personally know any of the ISI representatives for a success or otherwise of your application.
Use only the email provided as the standard communication medium for all enquiries. Allow the process to run its natural course- no undue personal inbox messages would be entertained.
If you must ask a necessary question on this thread, allow at least 24 hours for a response. And please first endeavor to check through previous responses- your question might have been answered already.
You need no special permission to share this announcement with your networks.
ISI Representatives- 03/01/2020

You forgot

Toefl- 65,000 (optional)
Wes Evaluation - 92,000
Application/Sending of transcript from Nigeria - approx - 30,000
Sending of transcript from Wes - $37 each depending on the number of schools you’re sending to.
Many schools now don't demand Wes evaluation, they carry out evaluation their selves. They just require you to upload your transcript in the application and will only demand official trancript sent to them when you have been admitted

I am having a little problem with one of my recommenders. A request email for recommendation has been dispatched to his mailbox since 31st of January but up till now he has refused to respond to the email. I have had to remind him on 3 different occasions but still he would not keep his promises and it is becoming glaring that he is not interested in doing the needful.
My question now is if there is a way to change a recommender after an application has been submitted?

Once your application is submitted, you may not be able to make changes. However, you may email the Graduate Admission office of your prospective school...

Good luck!

Good day everyone.

So I took the GRE on 1st November at Jkk center in Lagos. Had a score of 299, Q-152|V-147|AWA-3.0.

I was so disappointed with my score, I was discouraged about furthering any of my applications. You know, that ginger just disappeared, I was loath to even get recommendation letters from my proposed recommenders. However, I would like to highlight some of the must "dos" and "don'ts" in preparing for the GRE. Please forgive any blunders, also these are just some views I agree with, [as compiled by Profagas]. wink

Some would argue that the GRE is damn EASY even going ahead to compare with JSCE level. But others state different, saying that GRE is so HARD. Well, you can not be sure until you test your legs in it, right? The GRE is a standardized test, meaning they are restricted. They have a standard, they have a particular number of tricks up their sleeves. So the goal must be to discern/identify as much tricks as possible before the test day.

For the Quants, acing the GRE requires three things: 1. Concept 2. Speed 3. Discernment

Concept is the actual knowledge you need to know, the rules, formula, theories, method of approach you should know. Speed is completing the task within a specified period of time, you should know of course, the GRE is a timed test. Discernment, meanwhile is the ability to quickly see the answers by inspection, ability to quickly know you’re solving in the wrong way, ability to quickly strike off wrong answers, and the ability to be able to make correct guesses. This is the most important. The gist is if you know all the concepts, and you are fast, but can't discern, you will keep falling for the tricks laid down by ETS. You can finish a section with 10 minutes to spare and get a 9/20. I was so good with the concepts but speed and discernment were my Achilles heel.

There are several prep companies with different books, a lot of them. They all have their weak points and strong points. So number one is the official ETS materials; the trio of the Official guide, official quants practice questions and the official verbal practice questions. You should be over familiar with the content of these books. You should’ve solved all the questions there. All of it, they are the most trustworthy folks. You also need the GRE Maths review, they are also from ETS.

For quants, it’s a worldwide concession, Manhattan 6 books and the 5 lb book of practice question are the best for the concepts. Then you need to watch Magoosh lecture videos. It’s not really about reading, it’s about solving questions. So you should pay attention to questions and HOW THEY ARE SOLVED. Very important. HOW THEY ARE SOLVED. You should watch the Magoosh practice questions videos for this. There are different ways to solve a question and only one ETS way of solving.

The verbal section doesn’t have a formula, no fixed pattern like quants. Just there to frustrate good people. But it’s the GRE. So it can be aced also. For Verbal, Manhattan is quite weak, but you should try to read them (books 7 and cool. For RC which is the toughest set of questions in verbal, Kaplan is the god. Kaplan chapter 7. For SE and TC, you need to memorize vocabs, a lot of them. Use Magoosh Flashcards on your phone, if you have more time, you can check out Manhattan 1000 and Barron 1000 word list. That should be enough. Help your pacing by answering SE and TC questions first within the first 10 minutes, then the remaining 20 minutes for RC. Also, short passages before long passages.

For AWA, the best is Princeton review.

The point is you don’t need plenty materials. You don’t. In fact, some materials are point blank bad for you. They don’t set ETS-like questions. Don’t use anyhow material you see or mock test you see. Whatever it is you are looking for, is in Manhattan, Magoosh, Kaplan, Princeton, and the ETS materials. That is all. THAT IS ALL. Others are just repetition or bad for you. Don’t spend time going through several sources, reading same thing over and over.

Conclusively, PRACTICE! PRACTICE!! PRACTICE!!! You don't want to be like me who prepared for GRE for aggregate 5 weeks with an 8-4 job. Of course you want to pray about it. Believe me it works. You’ll want to be assured that the Almighty has your back, not even just for the GRE but even graduate studies as a whole.

Create time for yourself, but that doesn't mean you have to stop living life. Be happy. Don't kill yourself. You don't need overnight, don't let it affect your life. It's a terrible thing to be sacked because of GRE overnights. It's just a test. People have gotten full funding with 299. I know there are schools I can apply to. cheesy wink

Let me put my profile here. Please contact me if you have useful information for me. You can also contact me if you have specific enquiries about the GRE, or like to get a memo when Leo Messi wins his 7th Ballon D'or.

Looking at applying for PhD in Immunology/Virology/Cancer therapy.
UG- Microbiology, 4.39/5.00 (3.63/4.00 wes unofficial)
GRE- 299, Q-152|V-147|AW-3.0

I need your advice. We all need to follow our dreams. Thanks.

Cheers.

Special mention to the creators and members of this hub. 2014-date, no small feat. Danjaninja, happyday, sirriddy, et al.

Please what do you mean by R1 and R2 schools. Secondly, do this these schools offer RA and TA positions - I heard your scores on both GRE and TOEFL determines if you will get these positions. I'm going for a PhD. Thanks for the replies.

R1 and R2 mean tier 1 and tier 2 research schools respectively.

About your second question, this should be directed to your Grad Coord to build a relationship with him or her. GRE and TOEFL plays a key role but might not be sufficient enough to tell who gets a T.A and R.A..

Cheers

How about you register directly on ETS website? $220 in naira is circa 81K. So?

We have two test centres in Lagos if I am not mistaken. One at JKK Ilupeju and another Dragnet on the island.

This 110k from Bymafit might include tutorial fees, try clearifying that.

Godspeed!

Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by Tella26: 4:39am On Mar 09, 2020
The best time is the time you are sure you really want to have the exam and you dont have any distraction. Apart from that, many people think between April to July is the best because you will be able to send in your application on time as soon as possible for scholarship consideration and you will have enough time to retake the exam in case you are not satisfied with your score.

Really? You mean you mailed the schools and they gave that reply?
I feel the schools you filled on exam day should have your scores already because the affordable tests’ person registered a friend of mine for the same exam and the scores got to the schools he filled on exam day, though he can’t send to other schools due to the outstanding payment on the account.
The ‘Affordable tests’ person really messed up.
Sincerely, if you feel your scores are good enough, I will advice that you pay the debt.
