HealthHow To Reduce Cancer Risk by bablors(op): 2:27pm On Oct 04, 2015
You can reduce your risk of cancer by having a healthy lifestyle. Find out about stopping smoking, eating a healthy diet, keeping fit and drinking less alcohol.

In 2009, 156,900 people in the UK died from cancer. However, since the 1990s, survival rates in men and women have improved for most cancers.

There are no proven ways to prevent cancer, but you can reduce your risk of getting it. Risk factors you can do something about include smoking and being overweight, and there are other things you can do to reduce your risk.
Healthy lifestyle

Leading a healthy lifestyle can help lower your risk of developing certain cancers. You can do this by:

eating a healthy balanced diet
maintaining a healthy weight
drinking less alcohol
stopping smoking
protecting your skin from sun damage

Eating a healthy balanced diet

Stories about various foods and diets linked to preventing cancer are often in the news. This is because a lot of research is going on into diet and cancer. But it isn’t easy to study the link between diet and cancer because there are so many different factors involved, and cancer can take years to develop.

No single food or supplement can prevent cancer from developing. Overall, research shows a link between eating certain groups of foods (rather than any specific foods, vitamins or nutrients) and a reduction in cancer risk.

Eating a healthy balanced diet may lower your risk of developing cancer. A healthy balanced diet contains:

plenty of fruit and vegetables: try to eat at least five portions a day
plenty of bread, rice, potatoes, pasta and other starchy foods: choose wholegrain foods where possible as these contain more fibre
some meat, fish, eggs, beans and other non-dairy sources of protein
some milk and dairy foods
just a small amount of foods and drinks high in fat or sugars, such as cakes, crisps and biscuits

Eating a healthy balanced diet will help make sure your body gets all the nutrients it needs.
Fibre

Evidence consistently suggests that eating plenty of fibre can reduce the risk of bowel cancer. Diets high in fibre can help keep your bowel healthy and prevent constipation.

Fibre-rich foods include wholegrain pasta, bread, breakfast cereals and rice. Pulses, fruit and vegetables are also good sources of fibre.
Red and processed meat

Meat is a good source of protein, vitamins and minerals, such as iron and zinc. But evidence shows that there is probably a link between eating red and processed meat, and the risk of bowel cancer. People who eat a lot of these meats have a higher risk of getting bowel cancer than people who eat small amounts.

Beef, pork and lamb are all red meat. Processed meats include bacon, sausages, salami and ham.

If you eat more than 90 grams of red or processed meat a day (the equivalent of about three thin-cut slices of roast beef, lamb or pork, where each slice is about the size of half a piece of sliced bread), it is recommended that you cut down to 70 grams. You can find out more about eating red and processed meat.
Beta-carotene supplements

Beta-carotene, often found in antioxidant supplements, has been found to increase the risk of lung cancer developing in smokers and people who have been heavily exposed to asbestos at work. It is possible that taking large amounts of beta-carotene supplements would also increase the risk of cancer in other people.
Maintaining a healthy weight

In England, over 60% of the population is overweight or obese. Being overweight or obese can increase your risk of some cancers, such as:

bowel cancer
pancreatic cancer
oesophageal cancer
breast cancer if you are a woman who has been through the menopause
cancer of the womb (uterus)
kidney cancer

Being a healthy weight can reduce your risk of developing cancer. You can find out whether you are a healthy weight by using the BMI healthy weight calculator.

You can find information and tips on how to start losing weight.
Drinking less alcohol

Drinking alcohol is known to increase your risk of some cancers, including:

mouth cancer
pharynx and larynx cancer
oesophageal cancer
colorectal cancer in men
breast cancer

It is probably a cause of other cancers such as colorectal cancer in women and liver cancer.

Women shouldn't regularly drink more than 2-3 units of alcohol a day, and men shouldn't regularly drink more than 3-4 units a day.

"Regularly" means every day or on most days of the week. Use the drinks checker to find out how many units are in different alcoholic drinks.
Stopping smoking

Lung cancer is responsible for around a quarter of cancer deaths in the UK, and 90% of lung cancer cases are related to smoking.

"Stopping smoking greatly cuts the risk of developing cancer," says Hazel Nunn, Cancer Research UK's health information officer. "The earlier you stop, the greater the impact. But it's never too late to quit. People who quit smoking at 30 live nearly as long as non-smokers, and those who quit at 50 can still undo half the damage."

There is support to help you stop smoking.
Protect your skin from sun damage

Taking care in the sun so that you don't get burned is important for preventing skin cancer. Follow Cancer Research UK's SunSmart plan to protect yourself:

Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm.
Make sure you never burn.
Cover yourself up with a T-shirt, hat and sunglasses.
Take care not to let children get burned.
Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15.

Keep an eye on any moles or freckles you have. If they change at all (for example, get bigger or begin bleeding), see your GP as this can be an early sign of cancer. The earlier skin cancer is caught, the easier it is to treat, so see your GP as soon as possible.

We need sunlight on our skin so that our bodies can produce vitamin D, which is essential for healthy bones. Read about sunlight and vitamin D to find out how much sunlight you need.
Know your body

It's important to know your body and recognise any changes, such as lumps or unexplained bleeding, and to get advice about whether they might be serious.

No more concessional posting for corps members – NYSC
Posted on September 22, 2015 by SmilingJudge in Events, News, NYSC with No Comments on No more concessional posting for corps members – NYSC

Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Johnson Olawumi has said that there would no longer be concessional posting for all corps members.

Speaking with journalists yesterday in Abuja, he said Nigeria belonged to everybody and therefore every corps member would henceforth carry out his/her one year mandatory service in any state they are posted.

According to him, the move will help the federal government to maintain the main objective of creating the scheme.
He said concessional posting had always been provided for prospective corps members who had any issue with their health and needed to remain where they are receiving treatment or any nursing and pregnant corps member who needed to remain around her home to take care of her baby “but it will no longer be for all corps members.”
Olawumi said that during the online mobilisation registration of corps members, “there is a section where they can upload documents backing their complaints before they can be granted any concessional posting.”

He emphasised that “any other corps member lobbying for concessional posting is wasting his or her time because it will no longer be successful.

6 Ways to Prevent Hypertension

By Krisha McCoy, MS | Medically reviewed by Pat F. Bass III, MD, MPH

Making an effort to prevent high blood pressure can reduce your risk of heart attack, stroke, and other serious illnesses. If you are at risk for hypertension, take these steps to help prevent it.
Don't Miss This
Are You Eating Too Much Salt?
What Your Blood Pressure Means

High blood pressure, which is also called hypertension, increases your risk of developing many serious health problems, including heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease. It is estimated that nearly one out of every three Americans has high blood pressure.

While you can't always control whether you get high blood pressure, there are healthy lifestyle habits you can develop to help prevent hypertension and reduce your risk of high blood pressure-related health problems in the future

Hypertension Prevention Factors You Can Control

Your age, along with a family history of hypertension and ethnicity are among the hypertension risk factors that are out of your control. When it comes to preventing high blood pressure, the idea is to focus on the risk factors that you can change.

"We can't do anything about our age, but we can do something about our lifestyle," says Gbenga Ogedegbe, MD, MPH, a clinical hypertension specialist, director of the Center for Healthful Behavior Change, and associate professor of medicine for the division of general internal medicine at New York University School of Medicine in New York City.

To avoid a hypertension diagnosis, make these healthy lifestyle choices:

Maintain a healthy weight. When it comes to hypertension prevention, your weight is crucial, says Dr. Ogedegbe. People who are overweight should try to lose weight, and people of normal weight should avoid adding on any pounds. If you are carrying extra weight, losing as little as 10 pounds can help prevent high blood pressure. Talk with your doctor about the best weight for you.
Eat a balanced diet. Eating healthful foods can help keep your blood pressure under control. Get plenty of fruits and vegetables, especially those rich in potassium, and limit your intake of excess calories, fat, and sugar. Consider following the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, or DASH, diet, which has been shown to help manage blood pressure.
Cut back on salt. For many people, eating a low-sodium diet can help keep blood pressure normal. "The higher the sodium intake, the higher the blood pressure," says Ogedegbe. You can cut back on your total salt intake by avoiding high-sodium packaged and processed foods and not adding extra salt to your meals. "I tell people to stay away from salt shakers," adds Ogedegbe
Exercise regularly. Get moving to prevent hypertension. "Physical activity is crucial," says Ogedegbe. The more exercise you get, the better, but even a little bit can help control blood pressure. Moderate exercise for about 30 minutes three times a week is a good start.
Limit the alcohol. Drinking too much alcohol can lead to high blood pressure. For women, that means no more than one drink a day, and for men, no more than.
Monitor your blood pressure. Make sure that you have your blood pressure measured regularly, either at your doctor's office or at home. High blood pressure often occurs with no symptoms, so only blood pressure readings will tell you if your blood pressure is on the rise. If your doctor determines that you have prehypertension — blood pressure in the range of 120-139/80-89 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) that puts you at increased risk of developing hypertension — your doctor may recommend extra steps as a safeguard.

Take a look at your lifestyle habits and decide where you can make changes to help prevent hypertension. Conquer small goals, such as snacking on fruits and vegetables instead of junk food, and continue to practice these good habits until they are a part of your daily routine.

Adopting these lifestyle changes can help prevent high blood pressure if your blood pressure is currently under control or lead to lower blood pressure if your numbers are already elevated.

Yoruba history and culture

The Yorubas originated from Ile-Ife, arose and became quite popular by their trading with the Portuguese, which gave them a large supply of guns.

However, they were unable to push back the Fulani who invaded them and pushed much of the Yoruba to the south.

In the late 1800s, the Yorubas formed a treaty with the Fulani and in 1901 they were colonized by the British. Because of their enmity with the Fulani who are the great Islam evangelists, most of the Yoruba people do not hold to Islam but instead worship many of the gods and spirits that the Yoruba hold to.

Economically, Yoruba people primarily engage in agriculture, with about 15% of the people employed as merchants or artists and craftsman.

One of the features that make Yoruba people unique is their tendency to form into large city groups instead of small village groups. The Yorubas are today one of the three main ethnic groups that make up Nigeria. They can also be found in neighbouring countries.

People & Culture

Yoruba People

Yoruba people are a large ethno-linguistic group or ethnic nation in Africa, and the majority of them speak the Yoruba language. The Yoruba constitute approximately 21 percent of Nigeria’s total population, and around 40 million individuals throughout the region of West Africa. While the majority of the Yoruba live in western Nigeria, there are also substantial indigenous Yoruba communities in Benin, Ghana, Togo and the Caribbean.

A significant percentage of Africans enslaved during the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade in the Americas managed to maintain the Yoruba spiritual religion known as Aborisha.

Indeed, the initiation and practice of Aborisha spiritual religion offers a route to all people of African descent, who were victims of slave trade in the Americas or the Caribbean, to make claim to Yoruba heritage.

The Yorubas are the main ethnic group in the states of Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo, which are subdivisions of Nigeria; they also constitute a sizable proportion of Kwara and Kogi States as well as Edo State.

8 Highly Effective Business Success Tips for Entrepreneurs

Being an entrepreneur means that you'll often blaze your own trail: No career guides, counselors or maps will guide you from one step to the next: You'll have to make it up as you go. I’ve been an entrepreneur my whole adult life and it’s the only career I’ve ever known. In a way, that makes me lucky: I’ve become not only comfortable with, but actually good at, forging ahead into unchartered territory.

Related: Seek Your Strategy for 2015 on a Vision Quest

However, like everyone else, I’ve faced moments of doubt and uncertainty and plenty of sleepless nights. As I look back at the steps that led me from my first sale -- standing next to my grandfather Joe at a folk festival when I was just a young kid -- to my assorted entrepreneurial ventures today, some common themes emerge.
1. Keep the big vision in sight.

A big vision will take you far. I put this tip first because when things go wrong on the path to your success, and they will, keeping the big vision in mind will enable you to steer your way back to a successful course. It may not always be the course you imagined, but your big vision becomes your north star, which in turn helps you navigate and orient yourself through the darkness. I believe in this so much, I even co-wrote a book on the subject with my brother. Your vision is your foundation, compass and celestial beacon, lighting the way forward.
2. Fuel your vision with perseverance.

What should go hand-in-hand with a big vision is the perseverance you’ll need to keep moving forward. If you’re a Game of Thrones watcher, there was a great line in a recent episode when Stannis Baratheon was being advised about the lack of wisdom in starting a battle in the snow. He responded: “We march to victory or we march to defeat, but we go forward, only forward.”

Sometimes, when things get challenging on your path as an entrepreneur, you have to commit yourself to moving forward, regardless of the discomfort and fear surrounding the next steps. When you fuel your big vision with perseverance and the spirit of “only forward,” you eventually meet your success.
3. Make a plan, but be flexible.

You need a few sets of plans, even if each is only a few pages. A business plan, with an accompanying marketing outline, are important blueprints for success. They help you map out the major landmarks of the road ahead, define your success and break the journey into important metrics you can track your progress against.

I’m not one for a giant, robust plan nobody will access, but I do advocate a more modest go-to plan that can act as your basic instruction manual and hold you accountable to specific numbers. The reason I don’t support highly detailed plans is that I believe you need the flexibility to alter the course as necessary. Sometimes, large changes to the plan will be necessary.

4. Embrace your expertise.

If you’re already innately good at something, or have a skillset, embrace it. Don’t try to be all things for all aspects of your business. Hire out or sign contracts with agencies for the things you can’t do, and focus on your strengths as quickly and often as possible. Don’t be a jack-of-all-trades and a master of none.
5. Don’t reinvent the wheel.

What is already working in other people’s business models, in your industry, in software applications and other business operations that you can emulate instead of re-create? Don’t waste your time trying to set up systems when you can simply purchase and install one, saving precious time and spending little money. I always keep my burn rate in mind and run as lean as possible. But sometimes the best decision is to take on the expense of some good systems so you don’t have to waste time and make mistakes building your own.
6. Don’t burn out.

This isn’t just a stale piece of advice: Your health is literally the most important thing in your life. When your body gives out, you’re done. Your heart doesn’t care how good a business you have; your circulatory system isn’t all that impressed with your money or accomplishments. . . you get the point. Personally, I try to eat really good food, get good sleep and take as much time as I can manage day by day to laugh with my kids and see my wife.

You will burn out if you sacrifice your physical and mental health on the altar of your business. So, take care of yourself.
7. Leverage everything.

Life hacks may seem like just viral fodder on the internet, but they can teach an important mini-lesson in leverage. When you use leverage to your advantage in every aspect of your life, you go further, faster. Leverage outsourced help to streamline tasks and gain traffic time for important phone calls. Leverage down time waiting anywhere (the doctor’s office, your kid’s school, your mechanic’s waiting room, your airline flight) to get stuff done.
8. Keep your sense of humor.

If you can’t laugh at yourself, you’re missing out. I was almost asleep the other night when I thought of a funny event that had happened earlier that day, and I suddenly found myself erupting with laughter so loud I woke the dog.

Laughing is a good cure to diffuse stress, infuse some lightheartedness into life and get some perspective on the fact that, hey, this is only life after all -- you don’t have to take it so seriously.

So, try to laugh more and stress a little less. It strengthens your emotional and mental well-being, keeps other people from getting under your skin and keeps you cool and collected, plus a lot more fun to be around

How Does a Stroke Occur?
What Are the Symptoms of Stroke?
What Should I Do If I Experience Stroke Symptoms?
Is it Possible to Prevent a Stroke?

Knowing the signs of a stroke is the first step in stroke prevention. A stroke, sometimes called a "brain attack," occurs when blood flow to an area in the brain is cut off. The brain cells, deprived of the oxygen and glucose needed to survive, die. If a stroke is not caught early, permanent brain damage or death can result.

How Does a Stroke Occur?

There are two types of stroke.

Ischemic stroke is similar to a heart attack, except it occurs in the blood vessels of the brain. Clots can form in the brain's blood vessels, in blood vessels leading to the brain, or even in blood vessels elsewhere in the body and then travel to the brain. These clots block blood flow to the brain's cells. Ischemic stroke can also occur when too much plaque (fatty deposits and cholesterol) clogs the brain's blood vessels. About 80% of all strokes are ischemic.
Hemorrhagic (heh-more-raj-ik) strokes occur when a blood vessel in the brain breaks or ruptures. The result is blood seeping into the brain tissue, causing damage to brain cells. The most common causes of hemorrhagic stroke are high blood pressure and brain aneurysms. An aneurysm is a weakness or thinness in the blood vessel wall.

What Are the Symptoms of Stroke?

The most common symptoms of a stroke are:

Weakness or numbness of the face, arm, or leg on one side of the body
Loss of vision or dimming (like a curtain falling) in one or both eyes
Loss of speech, difficulty talking, or understanding what others are saying
Sudden, severe headache with no known cause
Loss of balance or unstable walking, usually combined with another symptom

What Should I Do If I Experience Stroke Symptoms?

Immediately call 911 if you or someone you know has symptoms of a stroke. Stroke is a medical emergency. Immediate treatment can save your life or increase your chances of a full recovery.
Is it Possible to Prevent a Stroke?

Up to 50% of all strokes are preventable. Many risk factors can be controlled before they cause problems.

Controllable Risk Factors for Stroke:

High blood pressure
Atrial fibrillation
Uncontrolled diabetes
High cholesterol
Smoking
Excessive alcohol intake
Obesity
Carotid or coronary artery disease

Uncontrollable Risk Factors for Stroke:

Age (>65)
Gender (Men have more strokes, but women have deadlier strokes)
Race (African-Americans are at increased risk)
Family history of stroke

Your doctor can evaluate your risk for stroke and help you control your risk factors. Sometimes, people experience warning signs before a stroke occurs.

These are called transient ischemic attacks (also called TIA or "mini-stroke"wink and are short, brief episodes of the stroke symptoms listed above. Some people have no symptoms warning them prior to a stroke or symptoms are so mild they are not noticeable. Regular check-ups are important in catching problems before they become serious. Report any symptoms or risk factors to your doctor.

Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God

by Richard Pinelli
Many are aware that Jesus said, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God.” But what does it mean? Why is it necessary? How can we fulfill this command?
Seek ye first the Kingdom of God

Narrow is the way for those who seek first the Kingdom of God.

As part of His famous Sermon on the Mount—one of the most extensive documentations of His preaching—Jesus addressed the common questions each of us faces in order to survive (Matthew 6:25-34). How am I going to meet my needs? Will I have food and drink? Will I have clothing?

Addressing these questions, Jesus said, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (verse 33, King James Version). In essence, Jesus was cautioning us not to worry about these human concerns and to instead place our greatest priority on seeking God’s Kingdom. (For more about the Kingdom, see the article “What Is the Kingdom of God?”)
Why we must seek the Kingdom of God

The simple, yet profound, reason we must seek God’s Kingdom is that thousands of years of history show that we humans cannot effectively rule ourselves; and in the end, all human governments apart from God will fail.

Solomon wrote in Proverbs 14:12 that “there is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death” (emphasis added throughout). Jeremiah added: “O LORD, I know the way of man is not in himself; it is not in man who walks to direct his own steps” (Jeremiah 10:23).

Humans have tried every form of government, yet all have eventually come to an end. In addressing events leading to the end of man’s age of self-rule and the beginning of God’s rule on this earth, Jesus said, “For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.” Continuing, He said, “And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved” (Matthew 24:21-22).

In short, humans need a better government, a government that will be able to produce peace and prosperity forever.

"The Bible promises that there will indeed be a better government coming to this earth to replace all human governments."The Bible promises that there will indeed be a better government coming to this earth to replace all human governments. After explaining that there would be three more world-ruling empires following the one headed by King Nebuchadnezzar, Daniel the prophet wrote: “And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever” (Daniel 2:44).
How we can seek the Kingdom and God’s righteousness

Jesus’ teaching included instruction on how to seek God’s Kingdom: “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15). Repentance and belief are the two foundational stepping stones by which entrance into this glorious Kingdom will be permitted.

The reason we must repent is because “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Romans 6:23 adds that “the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

To repent means we must change our normal way of thinking, which is against God. The Bible reveals that “the carnal [natural, human] mind is enmity [hostile] against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be” (Romans 8:7). We thus need a change in thinking that will then lead to turning away from sin and keeping God’s commandments. As Jesus said, If you want to enter into life, keep the commandments (Matthew 19:17).
Baptism

When we repent of our sins and begin keeping God’s commandments, the next step is baptism. Speaking to people who had been convicted of their sins and who wanted to know what they should do, Peter said, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38).

Baptism—immersion under water as a symbol of the washing away of our sins and the end of our sinful lifestyle—is a covenant we make with God and Christ. It represents our understanding that we have broken God’s law and need to be forgiven of our sins. It also signifies our commitment to obey God’s law.

We are now convicted of our need to live by every word that comes from God and Christ. As Jesus noted, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4).

The next step in baptism is the laying on of hands for the receiving of the Holy Spirit (Acts 19:6). The gift of the Holy Spirit is what makes one an actual child of God. “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God” (Romans 8:14).

As children of God, we are then to grow in “the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). John referred to this as an ongoing purification process (1 John 3:3).
God’s plan for us in the Kingdom

God created man in His image with lesser powers and abilities to prepare man to rule with Him in a government that will last forever. God’s purpose for telling us “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness” is to help us develop, through our experiences in this life, His holy and righteous character and prepare us to rule under Christ as kings and priests on this earth (Revelation 5:10).

These are the beginning steps toward seeking the Kingdom of God, which will ultimately result in eternal life in the family of God.
EducationNo Admissions Into Nigerian Universities Beyond Oct 31 by bablors(op): 1:01am On Sep 26, 2015
Admissions processes into higher institutions in Nigeria will be rounded off on October 31, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Education, McJohn Nwaoibala, has said.

Mr. Nwaoibala gave the directive on Tuesday at the 2015 combined policy meeting, shortly after he pronounced the 2015 cut-off mark for admission into degree programmes, national certificate in education, national diploma and national innovation diplomas.

“We need to make hay while the sun shines. All admissions processes should be concluded on or before 31st of October 2015,”he said.

Mr. Nwaoibala said that the 150 and 180 cut-off marks were adopted by JAMB as the minimum score to degree and diploma awarding institution respectively.

He said the Federal government mandated the various institutions to strictly adhere to the 60:40 sciences to arts ratio, and the 70:30 technology to non-technology ratio.

He added that the states and privately owned tertiary institution should apply the criteria as approved by their authorities.

Meanwhile, the chairman governing board of JAMB, Peter Eze, said he is pleased with JAMB’s transition from the traditional paper and pencil test to the Computer Based Test.

He added that the mode of exams adopted in JAMB has changed the face of conduct of public exams in Nigeria.
“We can be counted as one of the top 10 in the world as far as conducting public exams is concerned,” he said.

Mr. Eze noted that the transition to CBT is a firm commitment by JAMB to ensure that the best practices in the mode of assessment in other for Nigerian youth to be attached with their counterpart all over the world.

How to have twins

How to have twins

The idea of having twins tends to polarise people. Some couples say they’d love the chance to parent two babies and others react in an entirely different way. If you are a twin or have twin siblings then your concept of the reality is likely to be very different to someone who’s never had anything to do with more than one baby at a time.
Are twins common?

Many reproductive experts believe that as humans we probably have more twin pregnancies than any of us are aware of. Technological advances have found that it is reasonably common for there to be more than one embryo conceived and implanted, but of these, only one is viable and survives.
How do twins happen?

If you are keen to increase your chances of conceiving two babies then it’s important to understand how twins are made.

There are two types of twins; identical and non-identical. Identical or monozygotic twins are formed when one egg is fertilized by one sperm which then divides into two separate embryos. Each shares exactly the same genetic components and identical genetic structures. Identical twins also share a placenta.

Non-identical or dizygotic twins form from two separate eggs being fertilised by two separate sperm. These twins are their own unique little individuals and share no more genetic composition than siblings with the same parents. Each baby in a non-identical twin pair will have its own placenta.

Another name for non-identical twins is fraternal; the other name for identical twins is non-fraternal.
What about twins in families?

Twins do run in families. But the genetic predisposition for having twins only applies to the mother. It is her family history which influences the chances of her having hyper ovulation.

Any woman can have identical twins and family history does not play a role with these.
What are the odds of having twins?

Currently in Australia 1.6% of all pregnancies result in multiple births and of these, 98% are twins. Naturally conceived twins occur once in around every eighty nine births. The majority of twins who are born are non identical and a result of two eggs being fertilised.

Some fraternal twins look very similar; others share some resemblance whilst the remainder may not even look the slightest bit related.
What will help boost my chances of having twins?

Being older rather than younger helps. It seems to be a twist of nature that just before a woman enters peri-menopause, her ovaries start releasing more than one egg each month. This “fertility spike” is also influenced by a surge of oestrogen. Fertility research has proven that twin pregnancies are much more common in women who are over 35 years. But this only applies to non-identical twins.
Have fertility assistance such as in vitro fertilisation or take fertility drugs. These stimulate the ovaries to support more than one ovarian follicle each month towards maturity. The result is that more than one egg is released.
Pick your own genetics carefully! Though we all know this is impossible. But if you come from a family where non-identical twins are common then your family history and genetic endowment means that you’ve got a greater chance of having them yourself. But identical twins can occur in any family.
Be of African/American heritage. Women from this ethnic background have a distinctly higher rate of twin pregnancies.
Having been pregnant before. Women who have previously had a baby or two have a higher chance of conceiving with twins.
Have a big family. This theory is based on pure maths; the more times you conceive the greater the likelihood of conceiving more than one baby.
Get pregnant while you are on the pill. Difficult as this can be overall, there is a higher incidence of women conceiving with twins when they are on oral contraceptives.
Try to conceive straight after you have stopped taking the pill. The theory is that for the first couple of cycles the woman’s body is going through a hormonal readjustment phase.
Already have a set of twins. Because the likelihood of conceiving with twins again is higher in women who’ve already had them.
Be heavier rather than lighter so that you’ve got a higher body mass index (BMI). Some researchers claim that a woman with a BMI of greater than 30 boosts her chances. But considering a healthy range during the fertile years is 20-25 and 30 would put you into the overweight/obese category then this is not a healthy recommendation.
Taller women tend to conceive more twins. But there is nothing you can do about your height, other than blame your parents!
Take a folic acid supplement before you conceive. The general recommendation for women who are planning to conceive is to start taking folic acid supplements one month before conception.
Encourage your partner to eat some oysters. The urban myth about oysters being an aphrodisiac is not entirely without basis. Oysters are high in zinc and this helps with sperm production. The more healthy and mobile his sperm are, the greater the likelihood of being able to fertilise an egg or two. If he’s keen to take supplements, the recommendation for men in their fertile years is 14mg/day. Green leafy vegetables, cereals, bread, seeds and wheat germ are all excellent sources of zinc.
Be a twin yourself. Mothers who are twins are more likely to have twin babies. There is no influence on the male partner’s side, only the mother’s. But it does seem that fathers may pass the twin gene onto their daughters for their future conception possibilities.
Eat more yams/sweet potatoes. It is a fact that more women conceive with twins who live in areas where yams are a major component of their diet. It seems that a naturally occurring chemical component of the yams helps to support ovarian function.
Keep breastfeeding your older baby or toddler. Women who are producing prolactin and breastfeeding are more likely to conceive with twins. Though some women do not resume regular ovulation and menstrual cycles for the entire time they are breastfeeding; this is very individual.

What’s fact and what’s fiction when having twins?

The idea that conceiving twins skips a generation is not true. Although there can appear to be a pattern in some families of this happening, the odds of having identical twins is the same for every woman.
Eating a diet which is high in dairy foods, milk and meat is said to help, especially at the time of ovulation. But there is no scientific evidence to support this.
Alternative therapies do not increase the likelihood. There is no scientific evidence to support the theory that accupuncture, naturopathy, aromatherapy, chiropractic or flower essences increase the likelihood of having twins

President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki ...donating blood in April 2014

There was pandemonium at the eid praying ground in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital, on Thursday as aggrieved faithful went on the rampage throwing missiles in the direction of the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, and other dignitaries.

Witnesses said the protesters were angered by the inability of the state government to pay salaries of workers before the Sallah celebrations, rendering some civil servants unable to buy rams for today’s Eid-el Kabir.

“Shortly after the senate president and other dignitaries arrived, some people started throwing stones and sachet waters in the direction of the Senate President and other important people,” one witness told PREMIUM TIMES.

“They started chanting Ole Ole Ole (thief), “Pay us our salaries”, “Where is our bailout money” and “Don’t use bailout money to service Abuja politics.”

Before long, the situation deteriorated, as some of the protesters started destroying cars and other properties in sight.

One of the vehicles destroyed is an unmarked bus, with a federal government of Nigeria number, belonging to the University of Ilorin.

“The protesters erroneously thought the bus was among vehicles in the convoy of Senate President Saraki,” a witness said. He requested not to be named for fear of reprisal.

The witness said as the violence continued, Mr. Saraki and other dignitaries were whisked away by law enforcement amid heightened security cover.

Other dignitaries to which the angry worshippers directed their missiles included the Emir of Ilorin, Ibrahim Sulu Gambari; the Chief Imam of Ilorin, Muhammadu Bashir; former Minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi; Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Ali Ahmad; former Speaker of the Kwara House of Assembly, Razak Atunwa( now a member of the House of Representatives); a member of the House of Representatives, Amuda Kannike; a former National Chairman of the PDP, Abubakar Kawu Baraje; among others.

Attackers are miscreants — Police

The Kwara state police command said it has arrested eight people in connection with the attack on Mr. Saraki, and other personalities at the Ilorin praying ground, the Nation newspaper is reporting.

According to the report, the command spokesperson, Ajayi Okasanmi, disclosed the arrests to reporters in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital.

The police spokesperson, the report said described those arrested as miscreants, saying there was no record of any civil servant or government official among them.

Mr. Okasanmi said, “The state police command deployed no fewer than 2000 policemen in synergy with other security agencies to make sure that the eid- el – Kabir celebration is a huge success. It was free in the course of prayers and there was the insurgence of criminals which we put into consideration while planning our security strategy. We know they normally come to beg for money from well-to-do members of the public.

“So they came as usual, but we noticed they were becoming unruly and we have to come out to prevent them from where the VIPs were seated. We then chased them away and we arrested about eight of them. They are in our custody and we have started investigation.

“We learnt that one or two persons were injured; but there has not been any official reports as to if any was injured in the course of arresting. The motive of their unruly behavior is yet to be determined. As far as we are concerned the people arrested are miscreants.

“From the stories we are hearing one or two vehicles have been damaged but we have not seen the vehicles. We also heard that one person was injured but we have not seen the person.

“The prayers went as planned and the dignitaries that came back to their various destinations without any hitch. Among the people arrested there was no record of civil or government functionary; the eight arrested are miscreants.”

Attack has nothing to do with salaries of civil servants

“The Kwara State government said the incident at the praying ground has nothing to do with salaries of civil servants, saying all workers in the state were paid before the sallah celebrations.

A spokesperson for the state governor, Muyideen Akorede, said majority of state and local government workers, including primary school teachers, have received their salaries. In a statement, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Mr. Akorede, the state government said those that were yet to will receive their salaries by on Monday as Thursday and Friday are public holidays.

Continuing, the state government said “there was therefore no reason for anyone or group to spread negative rumours or incite trouble on any account as Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed approved the payment of state and local government workers last Tuesday in anticipation of monthly allocation to the state and federal government salary bailout for local government councils”.

The statement urged the people to mark the Eid El Kabir holidays peacefully and with prayers for the quick resolution of the challenges facing the national economy

The conflict with Boko Haram has resulted in a humanitarian catastrophe in northeastern Nigeria and adjacent parts of Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, with estimates of internally displaced persons (IDP) and refugees sometimes approaching two million. In addition, acute malnutrition is widespread. On August 21, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) issued a useful fact sheet that profiles the severity of the crisis, drawing largely on United Nations (UN) statistics. It also provides useful facts and figures on U.S. humanitarian assistance. Some highlights of the USAID fact sheet are given below.

The figures provided by USAID are bound to be imprecise because of the circumstances under which they are gathered. But, they provide a benchmark. (The figures describing U.S. assistance reflect the U.S. budget process and may be assumed to be accurate.)

The crisis by the numbers:

• 1.4 million internally displaced persons in Nigeria as of June 2015 (down from 1.5 million earlier in the year)
• 172,400 Nigerian refugees in neighboring countries
• 3.5 million Nigerians face food insecurity
• 1.5 million malnourished children under the age of five and pregnant and lactating women
• 24.5 million people subject to recurrent Boko Haram attacks

Of the ten largest donors the United States has provided approximately half of the humanitarian funding to Nigeria in 2015. The figures below are for the current calendar year, up to August 21:

• United States- $63,831,160*
• European Commission- $24,646,961
• United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (UN CERF)- $9,889,075
• United Kingdom- $6,164,606
• Netherlands- $5,724,355
• Japan- $5,700,000
• Sweden- $4,342,586
• Germany- $3,733,313
• Canada- $2,942,975
• Switzerland- $2,350,156

* U.S. numbers reflect the current fiscal year which runs from October 1, 2014 to September 30, 2015

My advice to nursing mother;make sure you breast feed your baby for the first six months. Exclusive breast feeding makes your baby healthy and strong. Each female breast contains 15-20 groups of milk secreting glands, connected to the nipple by the milk ducts. During pregnancy, the placenta and ovaries secret high levels of the hormones estrogfen and progesterone, which stimulate the glands to produce colostrum. Colostrum provides your baby with tater, protein, sugar, viitamin, mineral and antibodies to protect him again infection. The production of colostrum ceases, and that of milk begins about 3-5 days after the baby is born.
HealthRe: Pregnancy Are You Pregnant Or Going Through A High Risk Pregnancy,,lets Talk by bablors(m): 1:39pm On Aug 30, 2015
Many things hinder pregnancy but i will mention just two. 1. Sucking of breast. The sucking reflex will stimulate the pituitary gland to secret prolatin(a milk producing hormone)into the blood stream. Prolatin will suppress ovulation. 2. Psychological impact; infertility may have profound psychological effect; partners may become more anxious to conceive. Ironically increasing sexual dysfunction. Fear of what the in-laws can do or rejection by husband will cause anxiety. At such a time because you are not in relaxed state, pregnancy cannot come.
