Written by Wanda edited by Qasim Adepegba. Time to turn to the Quran for some perspective. What, in fact, does the Quran say about wealth? Is it good, bad, or indifferent? It all depends . . . 1. Wealth is one of the blessings of Allah, but losing it—or in fact never having it in the first place—may be His way of testing you. And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient . . . [Quran, 2:155] 2. Attachment to wealth is not a characteristic of the righteous. . . . but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous. [Quran, 2:177] 3. Wealth must always be lawfully gained. And do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers in order that [they might aid] you [to] consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin, while you know [it is unlawful]. [Quran, 2:188] 4. The more you have, the more you’re expected to give. . . . But give them [a gift of] compensation – the wealthy according to his capability and the poor according to his capability – a provision according to what is acceptable, a duty upon the doers of good. [Quran, 2:236] 5. Spending your wealth in the way of Allah is the best investment you can possibly make, as it will be blessed many times over. The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all- Encompassing and Knowing. [Quran,2:261] 6. Spending in the way of Allah must be done with grace and humility. O you who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with reminders or injury as does one who spends his wealth [only] to be seen by the people and does not believe in Allah and the Last Day. His example is like that of a [large] smooth stone upon which is dust and is hit by a downpour that leaves it bare. They are unable [to keep] anything of what they have earned. And Allah does not guide the disbelieving people. [Quran, 2:264] 7. We’re not to be impressed by the wealth of those who don’t believe. So let not their wealth or their children impress you. Allah only intends to punish them through them in worldly life and that their souls should depart [at death] while they are disbelievers. [Quran, 9:55] 8. Wealth can become a false comfort, distracting us and keeping us from striving in the cause of Allah. O you who have believed, let not your wealth and your children divert you from remembrance of Allah. And whoever does that – then those are the losers. [Quran, 63:9] And when a surah was revealed [enjoining them] to believe in Allah and to fight with His Messenger, those of wealth among them asked your permission [to stay back] and said, ‘Leave us to be with them who sit [at home].’ [Quran, 9:86] 9. Wealth is good. Good deeds are better. . . . wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one’s] hope. [Quran, 18:46] 10. Material wealth is only of benefit in the world, because we can’t bring it with us into Paradise. The Day when there will not benefit [anyone] wealth or children . . . [Quran, 26:88] The next time you start thinking wealth might solve your problems, think again. Keep the words of the Message foremost in your mind, and you may just save yourself a great deal of pointless striving! May your heart be touched and your mind opened. |

1. Losing the favour of Allah. Assuredly, Allah knows what they conceal and what they declare. Indeed, He does not like the arrogant. [16:23] And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful. [31:18] 2. Allah will turn them away from His signs. I will turn away from My signs those who are arrogant upon the earth without right; and if they should see every sign, they will not believe in it. And if they see the way of consciousness, they will not adopt it as a way; but if they see the way of error, they will adopt it as a way. That is because they have denied Our signs and they were heedless of them. [7:146] 3. Their hearts and eyes are blindfolded by Allah, so that they cannot see guidance even if it stares them in the face. Those who dispute concerning the signs of Allah without an authority having come to them – great is hatred [of them] in the sight of Allah and in the sight of those who have believed. Thus does Allah seal over every heart [belonging to] an arrogant tyrant. [40:35] 4. They will not enter Paradise. The Prophet (sa) said: He who has, in his heart, an ant’s weight of arrogance will not enter Paradise. [Muslim]. In a Hadith Qudsi, the Prophet (sa) said that Allah (swt) said: Pride is My cloak and greatness My robe, and whoever competes with Me with regard to either of them, I shall throw him into Hell. [ibn Majah] 5. They are named the most evil person by the Prophet (sa) Shall I inform you about the most evil person: they comprise of the repulsive and the proud. Shall I inform you about the best ones? They comprise the weak, indigent and the persons whom people treat without consideration. But, if any of them takes Allah’s oath that he will do that thing, Allah will fulfill his oath. [Ahmad*] Written by Tabassum Mosleh, edited by Qasim Adepegba Akin. |

It is better, in the case of zakaah, to give it openly, so that others will see it and do likewise, and lest one be thought badly of. |

Here are a few things that we can try out to help us fight envy. 1. Make dua immediately, the moment you feel it. Just pray to Allah to protect you from Shaytan’s attacks, remove the envy from your heart, to bless the other person in what He’s given them, and to give you more and better. 2. Transfer the focus towards your own self. Hunt for the source of the envy. Ask yourself searching questions, and give honest answers. Am I discontent with what Allah has given me? Do I want more? Am I angry with Allah for preferring the other person with the thing that I covet? Or am I angry with the person who caused me pain? Once you find out where the problem lies, make more specific duas, and read on your specific problem. If possible, talk to a Muslim counselor about it to get a better insight into your heart. 3. Use self-hypnotherapy. The envy is not a part of you. Imagine it to be an entity in itself, an enemy – a poisonous, green, scaly snake that’s wrapped itself round your heart and trying to squeeze it to suffocation. Now you’ll find it much easier and satisfactory to kill it as soon as possible. 4. Remove the negative filter from your eyes. Yes, the envious feeling is a proof that such a filter exists, that it filters out all the positive things that happen in your life and leaves a grimy, foul-smelling residue of negative thoughts. Force your mind to acknowledge the things Allah has given you, and say Alhamdulillah for each of them. Allah (swt) says: If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe. [14:7] 5. Remind yourself that not having something can also be a blessing: 1. May be the thing isn’t good for you, and if you did have it, it would make you unhappy. . . . Perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Knows, while you know not. [2:216] 2. The pain you’re suffering is actually cleansing you of sins and increasing your rewards, if you remain patient. How wonderful is the case of a believer; there is good for him in everything and this applies only to a believer. If prosperity attends him, he expresses gratitude to Allah and that is good for him; and if adversity befalls him, he endures it patiently and that is better for him. [Muslim]. 6. Finally, remember that our main job in this world is not enjoying its pleasures. It’s to earn eternal enjoyment and pleasures for the next world. And remember, every tiniest thing that you desire will be yours there, in sha Allah. Written by Tabassum Mosleh and Edited by Qasim Adepegba . |
