As General Muhammadu Buhari is sworn in as the nation’s president today, behind the facade of his tough mien are Nigerians (not politicians) he respects and could influence him in the direction of good governance. KUNLE SOMORIN and MUYIWA OYINLOLA take a look at some of those eminent personalities and why the President will listen to them:

Gen. T.Y. Danjuma (retd)
General Danjuma will certainly be one of the most influential people around President Muhammadu Buhari. He was also one of the most influential people during Buhari’s stewardship as head of state between 1984 and 1985.

Buhari served under Gen Danjuma in the Army and they have known each other during war and peace times.

Beside the fact that both of them served in the Army and retired as generals, both also abhor indiscipline and corruption.

Danjuma only recently urged the new administration to probe the outgoing administration of Dr Goodluck Jonathan.

“What we are hearing is that the treasury of the country is empty at the federal level. I’m calling on the new administration to

investigate what happened to our monies as soon as Buhari takes over power on May 29. With that, some of the stolen funds would be recovered,” the former minister of defence said.

Buhari, during his campaign, also underlined his readiness to tackle corruption head-on once he gets to power.



Mamman Daura
Buhari is Mamman Daura’s uncle, even though Daura is two-and-a-half years older than the new president. They are extremely close and have been since childhood.

A very serious personality, Mamman is intensely engaging, extremely intelligent and brilliant. He is a successful industrialist and was editor and later managing director of New Nigeria when the newspaper used to determine the direction of events and state policies in the country.

After the 1983 coup, he was one of the few personalities who played key advisory roles. In the late 1980s, he succeeded Ibrahim Dasuki as head of the African International Bank and also served as chairman of the board of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). He has always had Buhari’s ears.

His Royal Highness, Dr Halliru Dantoro, the Emir of Borgu, is another man that Buhari will defer to during his stay in power. They were neighbours in the 1980s and have been very close since then. The Emir has not hidden his interest in what happens to his friend. He once described Buhari’s second coming “as divine, to redeem and reunite the nation.”

He has pledged the total support of his people to the incoming administration.

The Emir was detained during Buhari’s military administration, but both have gone ahead to establish very strong and cherished personal relationship.



General Paul Tarfa (retd)
Major General Paul Chabri Tarfa’s closeness to the new president dates back to their early days in the military. Both went for courses and trainings in the United Kingdom at the same period and have maintained friendship since the 1960s. At the height of the hate campaign against Buhari, Tarfa, an elder statesman and former commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), could not hide his indignation at those who accused his friend of not having certificates.

He explained that apart from their school certificates, as military cadets in the 1960s, they were made to sit for other examinations.

General Tarfa blurted out: “Buhari and I went to the United Kingdom for training. We joined the military at 18, 19 years of age. When someone went through all the trainings abroad and passed through all the military examinations in all cadres and so on, and just one cranky idiot will say you don’t have school certificate; that is absurd.”

He explained that he and Buhari shared a school principal but at different schools.

“Buhari’s principal was my principal. From their school, their principal, Mr West, was sent to our school,” he said.

Prof. Tam David-West, a professor of virology served as Petroleum and Energy minister under Muhammadu Buhari between 1984 and 1985. David-West has become a soul mate of the new president since fortuitous circumstances brought them to government. Their relationship remains cordial and the unifying factor is their ‘zero tolerance for corruption’.

David-West, was a major campaigner for the Buhari’s presidency. He took on everybody that attempted to throw mud at Buhari and challenged them to produce evidence about their hate campaign.

For instance, he recently rubbished the counsel by the outgoing Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on how Buhari could increase the nation’s revenue base.

David-West said Buhari is a highly experienced manager of the economy and thus, doesn’t need the advice of the former World Bank managing director.

He said: “I read Okonjo-Iweala’s advice to Gen. Buhari on how to raise revenue with interest and amusement. I don’t think that Buhari needs any advice from her on the subject. He is not new on the terrain. He is a very knowledgeable person on how to move the economy forward. I don’t believe he needs advice from Okonjo-Iweala.”

With relationship based on mutual respect and shared vision, Professor David-West is certainly a man that could open doors in the new government.



Ibikunle Amosun
The governor of Ogun State is another man that will have a lot of influence in Buhari’s government. Since Amosun contested on the platform of the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) in 2007, both have struck a chemistry that bonds them like siblings. They have transformed from being political associates to family friends and each take the family of the other as his.

Bisi Akande
The former interim chairman of APC is a party elder Buhari honours and who has earned the President’s respect. Buhari sees the former governor of Osun State as straightforward, incorruptible and speaks the truth at all times. To Buhari, Akande is a politician who cannot be compromised on matters on which his mind has been made up. Akande is one man in the South West that is so well-respected and can call all politicians in that zone to order

8. General Yakubu Gowon (Retd)

Since the July 29, 1966 counter-coup when the then Major-General Murtala Muhammed marched the then Lt. Muhammadu Buhari before the then Lt. Col. Yakubu Gowon, who had just been announced as the head of state, and advised Gowon to make him (Buhari) his ADC, Gowon and Buhari had been very close.

Buhari didn’t eventually serve as Gowon’s ADC as Gowon told him he was reserved for “a better assignment”.

Once, Gowon reminded Buhari of that episode in 1966, and told him that only God knew then that the three of them – himself, Murtala and Buhari – would become heads of state of Nigeria.

Buhari respects Gowon immensely, not only because he was his superior officer in the Army but because he lives a Spartan life and does not stain himself by courting every government in power for personal gain.

President Shehu Shagari
Shehu Shagari is a man after the new president’s mind. Though Buhari and his men ousted him from power, Buhari has infinite trust in Shagari. His counsel will be sought because of the former president’s vast experience and knowledge of the country, its people and the connections he has established with other countries of Africa and the world.

Buruji Kashamu, the Nigerian senator-elect wanted by United States authorities for alleged drug offences, has accused a leader of his political party, Bode George, of instigating a raid on his residence in Lagos in an attempt to extradite him to the U.S.
Nearly two dozen operative of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, stormed Mr. Kashamu’s home Saturday. It was unclear if they sought to arrest Mr. Kashamu.
A U.S federal grand jury, in 1998, charged Mr. Kashamu and 14 others for their alleged involvement in an international conspiracy to smuggle heroin into America.
He denies any wrongdoing and says the American government is mistaking him for another person.
Mr. Kashamu has instituted a lawsuit to block any move by the Nigerian government to release him to face trial in the U.S.
In a statement Saturday, the PDP leader said he had confirmed that the Nigerian government, through the Attorney General of the Federation, did not authorise the raid on his home.
He said his political rival, Mr. George, instigated his wife, who heads the anti-narcotic agency, to invade his home as part of a plot to extradite him.
The statement, signed by Mr. Kashamu’s media, Austin Oniyokor, said “this latest onslaught is a confirmation of the alleged plot to illegally abduct him in spite of the pending suit against this illegality”.
“The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency(NDLEA) this morning (Saturday,23rd May, 2015) at about 4:30am surrounded the Lekki Phase 1, Lagos residence of Prince Buruji Kashamu to allegedly effect his arrest following a purported extradition request from the US.
“This latest onslaught is a confirmation of the alleged plot to illegally abduct him in spite of the pending suit against this illegality. As a matter of fact, the court has ordered parties in the matter including the NDLEA to maintain status quo until judgment is delivered on Wednesday 27th May 2015.
“We have confirmed that they do not have a warrant of arrest, just as the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice has said that it did not give any order to carry out this illegality,” the statement said.
Mr. Kashamu said he had “confirmed that this illegality is being designed and executed by Chief Bode George whose wife is the Director General of the NDLEA, all in a bid to score cheap political points.”
Mr. Kashamu urged “all well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on NDLEA, Chief George and his wife to toe the path of the rule of law and follow due processes, Kashamu cried out”.
‘Nigeria is not a Banana republic! The United States (US) being the bastion of democracy, the rule of law and due process should not lend itself to this kind of illegality,” he said.

A graphic video depicting a group of South Africans setting alight a group of bound young people, initially believed to be foreigners, after dousing them in fuel, has gone viral.
Saturday's development comes on the back of a series of incidents reported by local media, and after the South African Human Rights Council, a human rights body in the country, along with other concerned parties raised an alarm on Thursday about renewed attacks on foreign migrants in the country.
They called on the South African government to condemn the attacks.
"We are still to hear top members of government condemning the current xenophobic violence," Marc Gbaffou, chairman of the African Diaspora Forum (ADF), wrote in an open letter.

"We cannot discriminate, not in this sort, not any more."
Despite the resurgence of violent attacks on foreigners migrants in South Africa, the government is yet to acknowledged that the violence may be xenophobic in nature.
The government has instead attributed the attacks to "crime" and criminal behaviour.
Local media has reported that hundreds of foreigners have, since March 30, been seeking refuge at local police stations in the city of Isipingo, south of coastal city Durban.
One woman has been shot dead after her shop was looted and another man was beaten during an anti-xenophobia march.
The latest incident occurred on Friday when a foreigner-owned shop was petrol-bombed.
This is not the first time that xenophobic attacks have erupted in South Africa. In May 2008, 62 people were killed in attacks that swept across the country.
The video , trending on the social media website Twitter since the early hours of the morning, in South Africa, Kenya and in the UK, along with the hashtag #XenophobiaSA, shows the victims surrounded by people jeering the attackers on as they are set alight.

It was a beautiful afternoon at about 3:10pm on Tuesday,17th March while teaching my students on How to become a Digital Marketing Consultant, a man walked into the reception after my secretary informed him to wait till I finish my training before he could see me.He rushed to the ground where the training was being held and showed his ID card saying he was here to arrest me.I asked for his warrant and he immediately ordered his men & women who were heavy looking with their heavy guns and said; I am from the presidency and operating by the president’s order,how dear you ask me for warrant, ordering that I be physically assaulted and I told them not to dare that and followed them.

Getting to their office a young man was asked to come and he claimed he bought our database.The SSS officer latter told me these men had been locked up for the past 5 days. He didn’t tell me why but my investigation shows that this client bought our database for Buhari Campaign Organization and pushed over 3 million emails that went viral and helped the Buhari chance at this coming polls.

Was It constitutional wrong to send Viral Political campaign content?

No! Nigeria at the moment doesn’t have any spam law.Also, these database was acquired from a business partner whose clients subscribed for newsletters and we have the resellers rights.

Am I Campaigning for Buhari?

No! But I am CEO of a company that runs digital marketing for cooperate organizations,churches,NGOs and political parties.I am not a member of any party and my company renders professional services for various political parties.And one of my biggest clients is the President himself. But we render services for whoever ask for our service.

Another friend who has a bulk sms website had security men raid his home and took his wife into custody and latter released her because they didn’t see him and the allegation is the same APC members used his bulk sms site to send campaign sms. Digital Marketing is a legal industry worldwide and businesses have the right to offer their services to whoever pays for the service as long as the content is not inciting .Early that morning before the arrest some of my staff were called by SSS claiming to be from APC trying to find out who they want to vote for,all in an effort to know if they want to vote for APC or not.When has APC become a terrorist group that SSS should be asking Nigerian citizens to tell them if they want to vote them or not?Every Nigerian has the right to vote whoever they want to vote for.This was the same issue I was blaming pro Buhari for on social media that they are bullying people on social media and that it is wrong to bully anyone for choosing to vote for one candidate or the other.We must protect the digital marketing industry from politicians who want to destroy this industry in its infancy. Politicians are not even our main clients, but businesses who are dying daily as a result of harsh economic environment and not able to market as conventional marketing is more expensive.We have helped thousands of businesses particularly SMEs who have survived due to our digital marketing consultations ,services and trainings.

Am I Pro Jonathan?

Hitherto, I have been a pro Jonathan and have written series of articles against Buhari but for the first time,I am disappointed and considering my decision as everyone around me are now anti Jonathan because of what happened. When you throw stones be careful where you throw it to as it may hit one of your own.Without personally collecting a dime nor have I met him,I have single handed lay campaign for him on Social Media and various forums I am privileged to speak at.

I have refused to attend Buhari nor Jonathan’s event but follow on air keenly so as not to be seen to be partisan, but that my personal opinion for conversing for Jonathan was of a pure conscience.I have severally stated that this is a personal opinion and not that of any of the companies I founded.

Few Question I have for Jonathan and his team?

1)Why must I be harassed by the same system I am campaigning for?

2)Why should anyone be arrested for doing email campaign for Buhari. If the campaign was for Dr Goodluck, would there have been any arrest?

3)Show me anywhere in the Nigerian constitution where it is wrong to send such bulk Mail?

4)If you had wanted to arrest anyone why not arrest the leaders of the political parties instead of arresting innocent young men who are working hard in a country where there is no job?

The Youths

President Goodluck has stated severally that he stands for young people and want to protect and defend their future. If that is true,why should some two young boys in their early twenties be illegally arrested by the SSS for 5 days without bail or being charged to court? I have publicly shared on national televisions that young people should maximize the business opportunities in this elections and provide services for politicians than to turn to a thug and cause violence. This is the time for youths to be on the Table and not on the Menu.

My Personal Opinion

It is a huge disappointment that a Parastatal can call itself SSS and will come to arrest a loyal citizen without even googling his name so as to do facial identification.What kind of gross incompetence is that? If SSS had done its investigation well, they would have known am not anti Jonathan and will not waste state property to come and arrest me as if I was a terrorist. Also, a simple invite was all they needed to do and hear my part of the story and not to cause a scene and even seizing the phone of one of my students’ that videoed the incident for evidence.

To the president I want to advice that this is not the time to arrest oppositions or those working for them. No! not even ordinary citizens going about their daily bread with no single criminal incidents. Law abiding citizens are being arrested day and night because they are perceived to be working for APC. I think Jonathan should look inward, a lot of people who claim to be his friends are wolves in sheep clothes deceiving the president. Now that you have illegally harassed me, do you still expect me to canverse for votes for you in this general elections? We must all build a Nigeria of our dreams where no one will be unjustly treated and subjugated to ill treatment. We don’t need political prisoners. We need a great nation where law and order will take effect without any compliment. Equity and justice be done no matter who you are.

If not for my Lawyer and position in the society, is that the way I would have been illegally detained for 5 days for no just cause? This is a huge shame and slap to the Jonathan’s Government. I am terribly disappointed. While I am still widely consulting whether I will use the remaining 9 days to this election to actively campaign against Jonathan I will like my loved ones to know that my decision will be above sentiments but personal conviction of what will benefit Nigerians as a whole and not my personal interest.

I want to thank all my loved ones who stood by me and made sacrifices for my speedy release. I am grateful to all those who called all their “ogas at the top” for me without even asking anyone to do so. God bless you. My staff are amongst the team who took charge of business and didn’t even need a single family member’s presence before it was all resolved. Indeed you are an example of the kind of Nigerian enterprise Spirit we preach about.

I wish to say that this is my personal opinion and hope SSS will not come after me again for saying my mind, after all we are all praising president Goodluck for signing freedom of information bill. You can’t slap me and still expect me to keep quite. Well If they come after me again, you know what to do.

How can a ruling party be behaving as the opposition? As a Digital Marketing Consultant who has helped many businesses get better results online, I have told Jonathan’s Campaign team to get better hands to manage their social media archives and digital campaigns. The things Jonathan should have been doing is what APC is doing in campaigns. Email Marketing is one of the bests strategy Obama used to become American’s first black president. How can you be surrounding yourself with mediocres and not wake up to get the best hands. In my office,I often tell my staff,if I am more intelligent than you guys, there is trouble because leadership is about managing the best hands and not being the best hand.

If Jonathan’s online campaign is in shambles blame the team who are using old strategies. You can’t be going about arresting young people in the digital space for referring service and blackmail them. Never! can’t fall for it. I advice whoever ordered this kind of arrest to desist from it. Rather wisdom demand that you entice best brains in that industry to work for you and not to intimidate them. If things continue this way, I am afraid that May 29th will be Sai Buhari! and I don’t want that to happen for the various reasons I have stated in my previous articles,#whyiwillnotvoteforbuhariandyoushouldnt

I say my mind all the time and I remain patriotic about this nation. All my International trips is after this election. SaharaReporters has learned of a new twist in the desire of some top officials of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for a six-month postponement of polls in Nigeria, with several sources saying a faction of the party would work to replace President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s presidential candidate.

In separate interviews with SaharaReporters, numerous PDP officials disclosed that many founding members of the party had lost confidence in Mr. Jonathan’s viability as a candidate, adding that a faction within the party had discussed easing the incumbent president out of the presidential race, and replacing him with another candidate from the Niger Delta zone.

“The only obstacle to the plan is that the South-South might kick against it, so we have arrived at a consensus to find another candidate,” one of our sources, a northerner, said.

“If elections could be postponed for six months, we will definitely replace President Jonathan as our candidate,” another member of the faction confirmed.

In a clear sign that the party was crumbling was within, several high ranking PDP members said they regretted letting President Jonathan carry the party’s flag as a presidential candidate in the forthcoming elections. Some of them confessed to being aware that the party’s prospects looked dire with Mr. Jonathan holding the presidential ticket.

“We are the ones who started the push for six months delay in the elections to enable us [to] put in place an interim government which would then enable the party to change its presidential candidate to somebody that is more competitive,” one official confessed. He added that Mr. Jonathan’s faction also sought the extension for their own designs, which was to explore ways of rigging the elections.

Our interviews revealed that many PDP governorship candidates in the north and elsewhere in the country were secretly working against Mr. Jonathan’s re-election or quietly distancing themselves from him.

One party leader revealed that some candidates in the northern area were all but campaigning for Mr. Buhari, the presidential flag bearer of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, some PDP officials told SaharaReporters that, while they hoped that President Jonathan could be sidelined to increase the chances of the party in the upcoming elections, they also wished that the APC would also dump Mr. Buhari as its presidential candidate.

The party officials claimed that key political figures across Nigeria continue to view a Buhari Presidency with mortal fear because of his stubborn personality and his promise to punish the corrupt.

Several of the PDP officials told SaharaReporters that the rift between Mr. Jonathan and a large faction in the party that wants him dumped was reflected in the responses to former President Olusegun Obasanjo who two days ago dramatically announced his resignation from the PDP, publicly tearing his membership card. Two of the officials disclosed that, while Mr. Jonathan’s aides launched direct attacks on Mr. Obasanjo, the officials at the party headquarters in Abuja adopted a more cautious and subdued tone, regretting that the former president had decided to leave the party.

Some officials stated that the party hierarchy viewed Mr. Obasanjo’s public departure from the party as a dangerous signal and as a major threat. “Chief Obasanjo doesn’t just come out swinging the way he has done recently unless he is privy to the existence of some third forces that are against President Jonathan. And to the best of our knowledge, the former president has never fought a battle like this and lost, no matter how long it takes him,” one of the officials said.

“The truth is that many senators, honorable members of the House of Reps and governors are loyal to Baba, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. So they are doing Baba’s bidding even though they are giving Mr. President [Jonathan] the impression that they are with him,” another party official in Abuja said.

The party officials acknowledged that the statements of former President Obasanjo in the last three days had caused a major havoc on the party’s plans to work towards an interim national government.

Several of the PDP officials attributed the fractiousness within the party to the way Mr. Jonathan and his wife, Patience Jonathan, imposed unpopular candidates on the party in various parts of the country. Even though they agreed that Mr. Obasanjo had imposed candidates on the party in the past, one PDP official said the Jonathans consistently backed candidates who were extremely unpopular within the PDP and unelectable.

Asked if President Jonathan was aware of plans to replace him, some of our sources said the president knew that many powerful members of the party were not satisfied with his style and low performance. One source said former Vice President Alex Ekwueme and even the party’s chairman of the board of trustees, Tony Anenih, were far from enthusiastic about Mr. Jonathan’s re-election.

“President Jonathan’s candidature and unpopularity are damaging the party,” one official stated. He added that the party’s electoral prospects in the general elections had dwindled dramatically. “We are only sure of carrying about 11 states in the country, according to our internal polls,” one party official disclosed.

Party officials also said they were determined to change numerous candidates for governorships, the Senate and House of Representatives in several states if the six-month postponement ever became a reality. “The way President Jonathan and First Lady Patience Jonathan picked many candidates has now weakened the party across the country,” one top official in Abuja complained
