The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has condemned an advertisement on Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) sponsored by “Initiative for Peaceful Election’’ saying that the advertorial portrays Nigerian Muslims in a bad light.

In a statement made available to LEADERSHIP and signed by secretary-general, Prof Is-haq Olanrewaju Oloyede, titled, “Dangerous Advertisement on NTA,” it said taken along with the current public utterances of some political and religious leaders in the country, the contents of the advertisement are suggestive of a dangerous hidden agenda.

The statement reads, “The attention of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has been drawn to an ongoing advertisement on Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), the advertisement sponsored by ‘Initiative for Peaceful Election’ apparently on behalf of a political party, contains a concocted documentary which embarrassingly maligns Islam and portrays Nigerian Muslims in bad light aired on a national television owned by the federal government of Nigeria, the provocative advertisement is sending a very dangerous signal of a seemingly impending religious war to the populace.”

It said, “Incidentally, unassailable facts show that over 80 per cent of the victims of the 2011 post-election violence to which the advertisement in question refers were Muslims. These facts are available in both the reports and the white papers of the federal and Kaduna State governments’ panels on the crisis.

It added that, such an insensitive public attack on Islam and Nigerian Muslims is capable of causing chaos and thereby elicit a reaction in the like manner which may lead to further crisis. “To avert any such crisis therefore, the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs hereby calls on Nigerian Broadcasting Commission which statutorily regulates the broadcast activities in the country to be alert in its duty and ensure that a religious war does not ensue as a result of dereliction of duty on its part.

Here is Okupe saying General Buahri is unelectable and will not be voted in amongst other things only INEC can make a call on. Openly. Okupe is a Presidential spokesperson for a PDP president. I watched the AIT documentary last night and I decided to point out some
statements that I believed are not correct. This is not about pro Buhari or anti
Jonathan, it is just to set the records straight so that the younger ones on this
forum do not hold on to inaccurate statements. Weather we like it or not, these
are part of the history of our nation.
1. fact check: the documentary claims Buhari organised a military coup in 1993.
False! (there was no coup in 1993)
2. The claim that Awolowo was denied medical treatment abroad during the Buhari
regime was not correct.
3. That Awolowo and other politicians were wickedly treated: true Awolowo's
passport was taken away from him and same treatment was given to other party
leaders like Zik, Shagari, Aminu Kanu, & Waziri. I did no that Papa Awolowo
claimed he needed medical treatment abroad and was denied. May be we need a
verification from a Mana HID who is still very much around.
4. Herbert Ogunde's song Yoruba Ronu has nothing to do with Buhari's regime.
The song was released in 60s during the turbulence period in the Western Region
then (Now South Western States, Edo and Delta.)
5. The Buhari military regime truly attempted to kidnap Umaru Dikko from the UK.
This was to enable him face corruption charges in Nigeria.
6. The claim that the Maitatsine sect unleashed terror on Nigerians for the 1st
time under Buhari is not true. 1980 was the first time the Maitatsine sect attacked
Nigerian soldiers. Shagari was President then, and not Buhari. The sect was
effectively put to check later during the Buhari regime.
7. On Tunde Thompson, here is a response from him (Tunde Thompson) ow.ly/
I0sY7 The man says it was not a personal thing but a rule of law then.
8. The claim that the execution of drug pushers during the Buhari regime reflects a
sharia and taliban position was not correct. It was the law then and it was made
to curb drugs dealing in the country at that time. For example; between Jan 1 &
August 27, 1985 only 2 people were arrested at MM Airport. But within a month of
IBB taking over, 37 arrests were made.
9. True Fela sang about missing $2.8bn under OBJ when GMB was in charge of
NNPC. The case was tried under Shagari to the Supreme Court. The case was
tried in 1980 and everyone who made the accusation then including the famous
Tai Solarin claimed that they heard the story of the missing funds from gossips
and newspaper stands gists
10. The claim that the $2.8bn was traced to Buhari's account in London was not
true. Actually then, there was no missing money. What happened was that a
statement in the draft audited accounts of NNPC in 1977 or 1978 (I am not sure
of the exact year now) was misinterpreted by mischief makers that the sum of
$2.8bn was missing.
11. The claim that Gloria Okon disappeared under the Buhari regime is not correct.
Dele Giwa's death had something to do with Gloria Okon's disappearance. She
disappeared under the IBB regime.

Oyedepo in trouble with Obasanjo over support of incumbent President *How RCCG leader advised Jonathan, not to run for a second term.



After last week Thursday's Abuja meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan with some Pentecostal pastors including Bishops David Oyedepo of Winners Chapel and Felix Omobude, the PFN president, PDP political strategists are unconvinced how much the pastors can truly deliver on their promises to help the President.

It would be recalled that at the secret meeting in Abuja, President Jonathan confessed, "Osinbajo is my problem." According to those at the meeting, the President added, "everything was okay until APC picked Osinbajo."

It is believed that this conclusion was reached by the President after extensive discussions with his political advisers and strategists on the APC's choice of the law professor - pastor of the RCCG as General Muhamadu Buhari's running mate.

A source at the meeting said while offers of oil blocks are being made to some of the top pastors at the meeting, PDP strategists are warning the president that General Muhamadu Buhari's running mate, Pastor Yemi Osinbajo is not just a senior pastor trained by the General Overseer of the RCCG, Pastor E.A. Adeboye, but a beloved spiritual son of the highly respected religious leader.

The concern of the PDP strategists is that their promises to support Jonathan's second term ambition may not after all hold much water.

Said another source, "Adeboye values loyalty and Osinbajo is widely known to be very loyal to the General Overseer of the RCCG."

President Jonathan's political strategists are believed to be looking for means to break that bond, but the General Overseer has simply refused to allow himself to be so politically encumbered.

A source said, for instance, that Adeboye did not attend the meeting last Thursday as he has said he would be apolitical since there are members of the church in both APC and PDP. But PDP strategists say coming from the same Pastor who publicly blessed Jonathan before the 2011 election, that was a sign things have changed.

Perhaps not sure of the kind of reception, Jonathan himself had last month stayed away from the December 2014 Holy Ghost Congress, the same event in 2010 where "Daddy G.O" , as he is fondly called by RCCG members, had publicly blessed him. Only a minister from his government, Dr. Tammy Wenike Danagogo, Sports Minister was in attendance and being an RCCG member, the minister was not introduced as representing Jonathan at the event.

One of the very close pastors to the RCCG leader said Jonathan's absence from that event " was a mistake on the president's part."

Some PDP members also point to the public appearance of Pastor Adeboye with General Buhari at the New Year thanksgiving service of Lagos State as proof that Adeboye will not abandon his spiritual children whenever they need him. The PDP strategists are also reminding President Jonathan that Adeboye okayed it that Osinbajo should accept the offer of a running mate from General Buhari even before it was eventually decided and announced by General Buhari.

An RCCG inside source said "Pastor Adeboye is known to have helped some of his pastors and spiritual sons even when they err and fall into troubles, why then do you think, he will not do everything to help his loyal pastor who is being promoted in answer to his prayers."

The source said in training many of his pastors several years back, Pastor Adeboye had always given them his word that he would personally be there for them in their hour of need, a promise he has endured to fulfill even under very challenging circumstances.

There is therefore an acute confusion among PDP Campaign leaders, and the president's advisers on the effectiveness of the secret meeting held last week with the pastors, especially after SAHARAREPORTERS broke the story, and exposing the division among the pastors who attended.

Now, President Jonathan is being advised to do more, possibly to reach out directly to the General Overseer for a more public outing with him as the elections draw near. For instance, they cited the impact of Pastor Adeboye's presence a the President's adopted daughter's wedding ceremony earlier this January 2015 in Abuja. It is believed that after his public appearance with General Buhari earlier in January at the annual thanksgiving service, Adeboye's visit to the wedding in the president's family restored some hope of his "neutrality."

However inside sources at the RCCG say Pastor Adeboye is not very particularly enamoured of President Jonathan because as the source disclosed "the president has not been as obedient to Pastor Adeboye as one would expect."

For instance, the source said Adeboye had asked Jonathan, not to run for a second term, and instead choose to support someone else, but Jonathan said ok, but still went ahead to run. This happened even before Osinbajo's name was mentioned as a serious potential running mate.

Others say Adeboye's close relationship with Obasanjo, is another reason he could not possibly support the president the way he did in 2011.

On the other hand, there are those on the APC side who think that Pastor Adeboye should do more, now that a very senior pastor he personally loves and counsels is on the presidential ticket, a first in the history of RCCG, the fastest growing church in Africa.

APC members also discount Pastor Adeboye's attendance at the recent Jonathan 's daughter's wedding in Abuja, saying even former President Olusegun Obasanjo was there.

Meanwhile, Bishop David Oyedepo may have run into trouble with former President Olusegun Obasanjo over his role in the secret meeting with other PFN pastors in Abuja last week.

A source revealed after the news of the meeting became public knowledge that it was Obasanjo who had saved Oyedepo's neck when he ran foul of the law in Ogun State and the APC Governor Ibikunle Amosun's government was perfecting his arrest and prosecution.

Bishop Oyedepo's aides had assaulted some state government staff who were on visitation to one of the schools owned by the Bishop for assessment. It was alleged that it was Oyedepo who ordered the assault on the officials, provoking the government to threaten legal and criminal charges against him.

In the circumstances, Oyedepo reportedly ran to Obasanjo, who then asked him to come over right away to his residence, where the former president also invited Governor Amosun to amicably resolve the matter.

A source said Obasanjo may have been disappointed that despite Oyedepo's personal knowledge of his disavowal of Jonathan, the Bishop was still working hard to support his second term ambition.

Has your party adopted President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate like it did in 2011?

[b]We supported him in 2011 and that was how we were able to defeat the Peoples Democratic Party in the South-East because we learnt our lesson from the Olusegun Obasanjo administration when we won all the elections in the South-East but there was some hanky-panky in Abuja and the powers that be declared that we did not win anywhere. Even former governor Peter Obi’s mandate was snatched and given to Senator Chris Nigige, who was in the PDP then until the court returned our mandate. So, we do not want to fight the Presidency again. We are supporting him not because he has done anything meaningful for the South-East. There is no national project in the South-East today. The only one is the Second Niger Bridge which is being built with our own money because we will pay toll. That is the truth. In fact, I challenge anybody to point to a project that Jonathan has done in the region. Even the so-called Onitsha seaport was a dummy. The airport in Enugu was only renovated and tagged an international airport. How many foreign airlines ply the route?[/b]

But now that you say your party is supporting Jonathan, does it mean that the PDP will concede the entire South-East to APGA?

That was the deal we made with him because we had told him from the outset that if he continues to fight APGA, APGA would fight the state PDP and definitely, the APC would take advantage of the situation but if the PDP and APGA have a common agenda that every governorship, House of Representatives and senatorial position in the South-East should go to APGA, then on the presidential level, we would all vote for the PDP. That was the original plan but our brothers in the South-East who are in the PDP are refusing to cooperate with us. They are playing hide-and-seek and are deceiving Jonathan in Abuja that they will win. That is why you can see Peter Obi who resigned as Chairman of the APGA Board of Trustees run to Abuja to become the Deputy Director General of the presidential campaign. This was a governor who never helped APGA win a single senatorial seat in his eight years in power. So, I don’t know the value he will add to Jonathan’s campaign. And I don’t know any election that the Director General of the presidential campaign team, Ahmadu Ali, has won. So, Jonathan is fixing a square peg in a round hole.

Has Ndi Igbo also picked Jonathan as their candidate?

The Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo group is in a dilemma now. In 2011, they automatically picked Jonathan but this time around, they never thought things would be like this but now the game has changed and they are still strategising to see who they will pick but the reality on the ground today favours Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari. It is only a blind man that will think otherwise.

Why do you say so?

The game has changed. As it is, Jonathan has no chance of winning. Buhari seems to have taken over. The PDP has collapsed in the North if you care to know. All those who are running to Aso Rock and making promises to the President are just deceiving him. Jonathan is a sitting President with incumbency factor in his favour but Buhari has the masses and a cult following in the North. In 2011, Buhari won 12 million votes in the North with his ragtag party, the Congress for Progressive Change, without a single governor or senator to campaign for him. Today, his party, the APC, has 14 governors, 43 senators and 176 Reps as well as 625 House of Assembly members. Also, the APC has dominant control of the North-West with a total number of 18.4 million voters and North-East with 10.2 million while South-West has 13.4 million voters. The North sees Buhari as their saviour because they see his candidature as an opportunity for the North to return to power. So, I might not be speaking the mind of my people who have not yet come to terms with the reality. The Igbo and my leaders might not like my position but I am a researcher and I am trying to position my people’s mind instead of them moving about without a compass, thinking that it will be business as usual. The reality has changed.

But with what you have said, can APGA even win any election in the South-East?

Presently, we are more organised than before. Those that abandoned APGA and defected to the PDP are just joking. They made the wrong choice because I can tell you that APGA will become the next opposition in Nigeria. In school, we learnt the rise and fall of empires. The PDP empire is falling and no man can stop it. So, that is the position now. The party is not strong in the South-East. It is not even strong in Ijaw land. The party was just a contraption of the military when it (military) was handing over power. The party has no root. Political party is a local business that starts from the grass roots that leads all the way up but the PDP starts from the top and that is an aberration. A party is supposed to start from a zone and then grow. You can see how the Alliance for Democracy evolved into the Action Congress and then Action Congress of Nigeria and has now grown to the national level to merge with the Congress for Progress Change and the All Nigeria Peoples Party with a strong northern background. These are parties with roots and will stand the test of time. The PDP has no root.

But your party is supporting the PDP’s presidential candidate.

My party at the national level still stands by Jonathan but on a personal note, I don’t support his administration in terms of what his government has left undone in the South-East. We have been supporting Jonathan since 2011 but what have we achieved? If Jonathan loses, APGA will rearrange itself. The Igbo received no development apart from a few appointments under Jonathan. We achieved nothing meaningful. We have no refinery in the South-East. The international airport in Enugu was built in 1957 by the colonial masters. It was only renovated recently.

Enugu was the coal city and its coal was meant to generate power but nothing is done there again. The Igbo race has no industrialised economy right now. Our oil import and export is like selling palm kernel at N50 per bunch and then buying a bottle of palm oil at N500. He has no plan to set up a refinery but wants us to be importing till thy kingdom come. There is nothing to show that he has a plan to build a refinery and there is also high unemployment. Obviously he has lost direction and should not be contesting. Nigeria is the sixth largest producer of oil in the world and does not have a single functional refinery. We have the same problem with power generation.

But the power sector has been privatised.

As an engineer I will give you a clear explanation of power. They privatised the distribution of power as well as administration but the problem we have is power generation and if you cannot generate, can you distribute? So, what are they transmitting? They are just playing games with us. The issue is that no country in the world gives generation of power to individual companies. It is being generated by the government all over the world. It is like that in Germany, Brazil and in the United States. It is only transmission of power that is being done by private individuals. So, this government has failed. The power stations, including Kainji and Egbin, were made by the colonial and military governments. In a civilised environment, Jonathan should not be contesting for re-election.

Are you saying that Buhari can do better?

Buhari has shown leadership by example. We don’t need a microscope to see through him. He has shown integrity and discipline. This is a man that retired as Head of State and has no building in Abuja or Lagos. He has only a storey building in Kaduna. He does not give out money to people. So, already, you know he is not corrupt. He has given a sign of where he is going. He is incorruptible. When the head is good, the body will be good but when the head is rotten, the body cannot be good. So, if they say Buhari’s followers are not good, let us wait and give him a chance. It is the head that will drive the rest of the body. He is the one that will be in charge of appointments.

In 2007, Jonathan and former President Yar’Adua met 3,000 megawatts on the ground. In 2014, we are producing only 3,450 megawatts after spending more than $50bn. That is trillions of naira. So Jonathan and Yar’Adua combined could only produce 450 megawatts of electricity. Can we continue with this system?

NEC puts total voters at 70,383,427, creates 30,000 new polling units

As the country heads for the 2015 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has put the current total number of registered voters in Nigeria at 70,383,427, of which Lagos with 5,426,391 has the highest number of registered voters in the country.


Nigeria’s commercial capital is followed by Kano with the second highest number of registered voters of 4,751,818.


Releasing the list of registered voters yesterday in Abuja, INEC also created 30,027 new polling units in all the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as part of efforts to decongest polling units (PUs) across the country, bringing the total number of units nationwide to 150,000.


According to an INEC bulletin circulated to the press and signed by the director in charge of the commission’s secretariat, Ishiaku A. Gali, the commission said the decision to create the additional polling units was taken at the INEC meeting on Tuesday, August 12, 2014.
Before the decision to create more polling units, there were 119,973 of them across the 774 local governments.


According to the 2010 Electoral Act, each PU is expected to have not more than 500 voters, but during elections there are PUs that have more than 500 voters.
A glance at the approved re-allocation of 150,000 PUs nationwide showed that Lagos is leading in terms of proportional distribution.
Lagos with 5,426,391 registered voters got an additional 2,870 PUs, bringing its total to 11,565 polling units.


It is followed by Kano with a voting strength of 4,751,818, which was allocated 2,053 new PUs, bringing the total number to 9,809.
INEC, in the statement, said Kano State, which has 10,127 PUs based on proportional distribution of 150,000 and 9,809 based on approved new PU allocation.


Kaduna State has registered voters of 3,743,815 and got 2,878 new PUs, increasing its total number of units to 7,485.
Katsina State with 2,928,046 voters got 1,339 PUs more to bring the total number of PUs in the state to 3,818.
In the same vein, Jigawa State with a voting strength of 1,817,087 got an additional 346 PUs, making a total of 3,677 units in the state, Ogun State with 1,796,024 registered voters was allocated 569 new PUs, increasing its total to 3,818.


Baylsa State, with the lowest number of registered voters of 590,679, got 121 new units, increasing its total to 1,925. (See detailed table on pages 1 and …).


Also, the commission yesterday ruled out the possibility of Nigerians in the Diaspora voting during the 2015 elections, just as it indicated that it is making preparations to ensure that security officials on election duty are not disenfranchised during the exercise.
Chairman of the commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, admonished federal lawmakers at a public hearing organised by the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters to amend the Electoral Act.


This is just as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, said next year's general election would be a historical landmark in Nigeria's history, thus urging politicians to be cautious.


According to Jega, even if the Electoral Act is amended to allow Nigerians overseas, to vote the commission lacks the logistics to involve them in the exercise in 2015, but added that Nigerians who are abroad might be considered to participate in future elections.
He added that electronic voting would also not be possible in 2015.


He said: “I must be sincere with you. Even if the constitution is amended now, it will be practically impossible for Nigerians in the Diaspora to vote in 2015. It is practically impossible for us to commence that next year, but the amendment should be done before the 2015 elections for future elections.


“The issue of electronic voting should also be accommodated before the 2015 elections, but we cannot conduct elections electronically next year. It will be for future elections.”


He however requested an extension of the seven days set aside for run-off elections for the offices of the president and governors as provided in the Electoral Act to at least 21 days, “because it is technically impossible to do a run-off in seven days”.


He also asked for an extension of the days for the transfer of voters from the approved 45 days by the lawmakers to 60 days due to the technicalities involved, even though the Electoral Act provides for 35 days.


To him, the amendment of Section 25, which provides for a by-election whenever there is vacancy in a position would be appropriate so that all by-elections would be conducted twice every year instead of once.
He endorsed the amendment to Section 29 ( on the deployment of “the Nigerian Armed Forces only for the purpose of securing the distribution and delivery of election materials”.


On his part, Tambuwal admonished all stakeholders, especially members of the National Assembly to tidy up every aspect of the regulations governing the conduct of elections, saying: “If our electoral law is technically and morally sound, it will go a long way in ensuring that we have free and fair elections in 2015 and beyond.”


According to him, it is the desire of lawmakers “to ensure a level playing field for all participants in the electoral process and for a more transparent process of conducting elections in Nigeria”.


“The 2015 elections will no doubt mark a watershed in our nation's history. As participants in this hearing, you have an opportunity and a duty to ensure that you contribute to making the elections the best that they can be,” he said.

Israel’s Netanyahu hails Jonathan as Nigeria pulls last-minute surprise to block Palestinian UN resolution

The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, praised President Goodluck Jonathan Wednesday, after Nigeria pulled a last-minute surprise that helped thwart a resolution calling for an end to Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory by 2017.
The resolution, presented to the United Nations for approval, called for new talks based on territorial lines that existed before Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip in 1967.
The proposal was the culmination of three months of campaigning by the Palestinians at the UN, and was backed by 22 envoys from Arab states.
The Palestinians required nine votes from 15 permanent and non-permanent members of the UN Security Council.
Nigeria is currently one the 10 non-permanent members, with its tenure expiring in 2015. Chad and Rwanda are the other African members.
But Palestine received eight votes, short of one, during the vote which took place 11pm Nigerian time.
The United States and Australia voted against the resolution, while Russia, China, France, Luxembourg, Jordan, Argentina, Chile and Chad voted for the resolution.
Nigeria, Britain, South Korea, Rwanda and Lithuania abstained.
Nigeria’s role stood out because until shortly before the vote, diplomats had expected the resolution to get nine “yes” votes, with Nigeria believed to be in support.
But at the last minute, Nigeria’s envoy, Joy Ogwu, abstained from voting, echoing the position of the United States that the ultimate path to peace between Israel and Palestine lies “in a negotiated solution”.
Regardless of whether Palestine received nine votes, the resolution still stood no chance as U.S. would have deployed its veto powers as a permanent member to block it.
But analysts believe the U.S. sought to avoid that scenario as it would have angered Arab allies who are currently supporting a US-led international coalition against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, ISIS.
To save the U.S. from that awkward position, its Secretary of States, John Kerry, reached out to Nigeria to help block the move, the Times of Israel reported.
After the vote, U.S. envoy, Samantha Power, said “We voted against this resolution not because we are comfortable with the status quo. We voted against it because… peace must come from hard compromises that occur at the negotiating table.”
The Prime Minister, Mr. Netanyahu, also said he personally spoke to President Jonathan and received his assurance of support.
“I would like to voice appreciation and thanks to the United States and Australia, and also special appreciation for the president of Rwanda, my friend Paul Kagame, and the president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan. I spoke with both of them. They told me and promised me, personally, that they would not support this resolution. They kept their word, and that’s what clinched this matter. I think this is very important for the state of Israel,” Mr. Netanyahu said.
Some Israeli media hailed the cordial relations between Mr. Jonathan and Mr. Netanyauhu, with the Times of Israel recalling how President Jonathan visited Israel during his last pilgrimage with a 20-member delegation, and how Mr. Netanyahu condoled with Nigeria after the Kano Mosque blast that killed more than 100 people.
Nigeria’s position on the complex Israel and Palestine issue has been that of neutrality for years, in the belief that any decision must be attained through negotiations.
Nigeria has maintained that policy in what analysts believe is informed by the government’s sensitivity to many factors including, not wanting to be seen as supporting Palestine’s Hamas, or opposing the United States.
A major factor also is the religious angle back home, with many Nigerian Muslims supporting Palestine, while there is also the Christianity affiliation between Nigeria and Israel.

I have known Sen Ahmed Makarfi, the former governor of kaduna state, to have a terminal illness as at early 2000 and rumour has it then of his possible death and May be his deputy would succeed him. But as God will have it, he did not only govern for two term (8years) He is presently on course for Third term in the Senate. In fact, It was his deputy (Stephen Shekari) of blessed memory that pass on then, after which Makarfi appointed Yakowa who then pass on not long ago as a Governor after 8 year of deputiship to become a Governor that Succeeded Namadi Sambo.

Revered Kaduna Islamic scholar , Sheik Ahmad Mahmud Gumi has called on
Nigerians to avoid any form of violence in the forth coming general
elections particularly the presidential election .
He said both President Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP and former Head of
State , General Muhammadu Buhari of the APC are not worth dying for.
He also called on well meaning Nigerians and electorates not to allow
politics to suppress their conscience .
Shiehk Gumi made the call in a press statement he personally signed
circulated to the press in Kaduna was in reaction to reports where he
claimed not to have been quoted correctly .
“For the records , I am not a politician and I don ’ t have sympathy for any
of the political parties . My commitment for those that are fair and
following what I do is always to ensure that the rule of law prevails in the
conduct of all politicians and for the major stakeholders to avoid
overheating our already saturated polity.
“If some of my comments , which some considered nasty and against their
political interest and pursuit , will ultimately alert our largely unenlightened
youths and subsequently prevent the looming bloodshed I foresaw , then
the abuses and allegations of compromise against my person will be my
own sacrifice to this nation.
“It does not matter the malicious opinion of anybody against whosoever
did anything for the sake of Allah because He knows the secrets of our
hearts and He is the ultimate judge. I am always very conscious of
everything I write and I will always accept responsibility no matter who
feels offended .
“As an Islamic scholar the supporters of Jonathan or Buhari should not
expect me to embark on campaign or to compel people to vote a
candidate they don ’ t want . My responsibility is to guide and alert the
nation based on what I know and my conviction, while the people have the
final say . In the process , like all mortals , I can be wrong . What is
important in Islam is to act strictly for the sake of Allah .” He said .
Reacting to the report where he claimed to have been misquoted , Gumi
said , “I have not said , as reported during the groups visit to me , that
General Buhari is also corrupt as purported and erroneously disseminated.
In any case , it is not my duty to determine whether anybody is corrupt or
not or to even pass a damning verdict on him.
“May I state , however , that the content of my recent posting as clear as it
is was publicized by some media outfits to deliberately mislead the public
about my position , many viewed it as against Buhari or an indirect
endorsement for Jonathan .
“The records too are very clear. There is no Nigerian leader I persistently
criticize and censor like Jonathan because of the deficiency in his
leadership to address many serious national issues today , in some part of
the country .
“Criticizing Buhari will inevitably be seen as an act of blasphemy in the
eyes of his supporters . They see anyone that speaks against what they
believe in as a Jonathan man . This pathetic situation has to be reversed
because the moment someone presents himself for leadership he is liable
to criticism and answerable to people before God.
“The fact that there is religion in politics and politics in religion is the
reason why I believe it is a duty for me to be consistent in addressing
issues of public interest and to ensure that no human blood drops for the
sake of anybody’ s ambition, including the ambition of Jonathan and
Buhari.
“My comments on avoiding violence during the election is not only limited
to the supporters of Buhari as mischievously being insinuated but
extended to the supporters of Jonathan as well .
“In fact that is why before the two parties held their presidential
conventions I repeatedly urged the parties to do away with the
candidatures of Jonathan and Buhari because of the potential danger of
doing so . But now that they didn’ t listen and produced the duo , it is
obvious that only one of them will eventually become president in 2015 .
“At this point I must say , therefore , that we must prepare our minds and
accept the outcome of the election as much as it is conducted under
reasonable fairness. This is better than the risk of losing one human life
because of the ambition of Jonathan or Buhari. If lives are worth
sacrificing why is it that the children of our politicians did not participate
in the post - election violence of 2011! At this note I will call on INEC and
the Security agencies to conduct themselves appropriately without
partiality to diffuse post -election tension and Violence .
“I also call on the public to be patient no matter the level of provocation
and injustice because at the end of it all and due to our collective prayers
Allah ( SWT ) will provide the way out for Nigeria .
“I am compelled to give this additional comment because I know that
there are many reasonable people that misunderstood my position because
of the manner my comments are being reported . May Allah protect us all
and guide us aright . Amin ” he prayed.
