Business mogul, Alhaji Aliko Dangote’s plan to establish a sugar plantation and a factory in Kebbi State may have hit the rock, as indigenous land owners, who are mostly farmers, have refused to release their farm land. Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu said this at an interactive session with intellectuals of Kebbi State origin working at Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. The session was held at the university’s auditorium. Also in attendance were members of the Kebbi State Students’ Union, UDUS chapter. Governor Bagudu said that even at the offer of compensation, the farmers tenaciously held on to their land, saying that Dangote’s investment will not serve their interest. He said, “Dangote Industries’ application for 54,000 hectares of land to establish a sugar factory pre-dated my administration, but they could only identify about 24,000 hectares suitable for sugar cane cultivation. “When we came on board, there was pressure on us because all of those 24,000 hectares belong to farmers. And the proposal we met on ground was that those farmers would be paid compensation of about a hundred thousand naira per hectare.” He said further, “As a government, the whole cabinet looked at the proposal. Our concern is, you are going to pay a farmer hectare of land where he produces his crops. You will be making an income of 700,000 a year where he has been making 100,000 and make him a labourer forever. How as a social policy can you justify this opportunity cost? “What is the net contribution in output that this investment is going to bring, for instance, if you are replacing your current production of rice by the production of sugar cane? “Let there be no mistakes about it, we welcome investors and we thank Dangote Industries for identifying Kebbi as one of those states he wants to invest in. But above all, the most important thing is the need to ensure that investments serve and benefit our people. “We hope to convince Dangote that there are other ways this can be done to have better security for his investment, like agreeing that our farmers become his out-growers and he buys from them for production in his factory.” On adding value to rice and wheat production, which the state is noted for, Governor Bagudu explained that his administration built two models whereby a farmer, given sufficient inputs without subsidy, would inevitably achieve better outcome than a farmer receiving subsidy but insufficient inputs. “When we tested this by interacting with farmers, we were surprised by their acceptance of adequate inputs without subsidy versus subsidy without adequate inputs,” he said. He identified lack of human resources, inadequate infrastructure and apathy to developmental values on the part of youths as problems of education in the state. Bagudu also used the occasion to outline remarkable achievements his administration had recorded since assumption of office. The event with over 40 Kebbi State indigenously ranked professors and others in attendance was chaired by Prof. Abdullahi Abdu Zuru, Vice-Chancellor, Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, also an indigene of Kebbi State. http://punchng.com/kebbi-denies-dangote-land-bagudu/

There are strong indications that the All Progressives Congress is insisting on the removal of the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu. Sunday PUNCH reliably gathered on Saturday that although the APC was happy with the appointments, which the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, made in the committees of the upper chamber on Thursday, the party believed that for the peace process to complete, Ekweremadu must resign or be removed. Saraki became the senate president in June last year against the wish of the APC, which supported the emergence of Senator Ahmed Lawan. The former Kwara State governor emerged as the senate president with the support of the his loyalists under the aegis of Like-Mind Senators comprising members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the upper chamber and most of their colleagues in the APC. It was reported last year that one of the conditions that the PDP gave to Saraki was to concede the deputy senate president seat to one of its members. The senate president defied the APC when he ensured that his loyalists, except Senator Sola Adeyeye (Chief Whip) became the principal officers. But on Thursday, Saraki began a peace move when he reshuffled senate panels and appointed his critics in the Senate Unity Forum as heads of “juicy committees.” For example, the spokesman of the SUF, Senator Kabiru Marafa, became the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), while Senator Oluremi Tinubu was appointed the Chairperson of the Committee on the Environment. A chief of the APC, who pleaded anonymity, confided in Sunday PUNCH on Saturday, that although Saraki’s action was a right step in the right direction, he should do more. He said the APC was not comfortable with Ekweremadu as the deputy senate president and Saraki should look for a way of “getting him out.” He said that besides being a PDP member, the deputy senate president had not hidden his disdain for the President Muhammadu Buhari administration. The party chieftain stated, “We are happy with what he (Saraki) did with the committees, but Ekweremadu cannot remain as the deputy senate president. When the PDP was in power, opposition parties did not produce the deputy senate president.” Another APC leader who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “What Saraki has done is not enough. Ekweremadu must leave that position.” When contacted to comment on the claim that the APC was insisting on Ekweremadu’s removal, the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, said, “No comment.” Repeated calls to the mobile telephone number of the party’s National Secretary, Mai Bala Buni, were neither picked nor returned, a response to a text message sent to him was being awaited as of the time of filing this report. Our position has not changed —SUF member But a member of the SUF, Senator Adesoji Akanbi, (Oyo South), told SUNDAY PUNCH that the aggrieved lawmakers would not back down on their agitation for the Senate leadership. The senator explained that he, and other members of the SUF, despite being offered positions in the Senate, would continue to support the directive of the APC. He added that he was sure members of the forum, who were recently offered positions, would not turn against the party. Akanbi said, “We all know what the party wanted from day one. Initially, when the leadership of the Senate was to be formed, we all know where the party stood. Up till now, the party has not changed its position and will not. “Those who have been offered positions have the choice to accept or not to accept. I am sure that it will not affect their loyalty to their party. The Kabir Marafa and Suleiman Hunkuyi that I know, are loyal to the party, just like any other members of the SUF which I belong.” He said that the forum was formed by senators who believe in the APC and the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari. Akanbi said, “We from the South-West also believe in the leadership of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. If that (loyalty to the three) is a sin, we are prepared to commit it. If it is a sin to stand by those three – APC, Buhari and Tinubu – we will continue to be sinners.” The senator also noted that the recent reshuffle of committee chairmanship was not a new thing in the legislature, regardless of which sides of the divide lawmakers belonged. He added that those who were giving and taking positions should do so as representatives of the party and not as independent individuals. Efforts to get Marafa and Suleiman Hunkuyi, who are both members of the SUF and beneficiaries of the new appointments, were not successful on Saturday as their telephone lines indicated that they had been switched off. Marafa had on Friday said that the reshuffling of the committees was an initiative of the party. But a senior aide to Saraki, who spoke to one of our correspondents on condition of anonymity, said those who were still not satisfied with the leadership of the Senate among members of the SUF, were speaking for themselves. The aide also said that the APC currently lacked the popularity to unseat Ekweremadu in the current scheme of things. The source said, “How does the APC even want to remove Ekweremadu when it takes the simple majority to elect the Deputy Senate President but it takes two-thirds of the entire legislators to remove him. “Do they have the two-thirds? They don’t have it. As of today, the PDP senators are more in the position to do that than the APC senators.” Appointments, part of reconciliation — Saraki The Special Adviser to the Senate President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu, who spoke to one of our correspondents on behalf of Saraki, confirmed that the new committee appointments were parts of the moves to bring senators closer together. He said, “It cannot be the only thing. When you have 109 people representing large constituencies, continuously, you have to manage situations. It is like having 109 captains. Continuously, you have to discuss with and engage people; you have to make reconciliatory moves. That is what you have to do continuously if you want to get the job done. “It (the appointment) is just one of the continuous moves that have to be made from time to time. Remember that Saraki met with (Sen. Oluremi) Tinubu for a long time; he also met with Dino (Melaye) over their issue. As the issues arise, you have to continue to engage them. It is a continuous effort.” Meanwhile, senators of the Peoples Democratic Party have denied media reports that they were planning to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Muhammadu Buhari. In a a press statement at the weekend jointly signed by Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, Senate Minority Whip, Senator Philip Aduda, and Senate Deputy Minority Whip, Senator Biodun Olujimi, the PDP Senators described the said impeachment plot as “false, baseless and unfounded.” They said, “For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to state categorically that the said impeachment plot is false, baseless and unfounded. The PDP Senate Caucus had neither discussed nor participated in any discussion or congregation on the issue of impeaching and/or serving notice of impeachment on President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR. Hence, we advise Nigerians generally to be cautious in spinning and/or peddling rumours capable of heating up the polity.” http://punchng.com/ekweremadu-must-go-apc-chiefs-insist/

Two brothers, Saidi and Idris Amadu, from Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State, have confessed to killing a woman, Rohimat Kehinde, and a girl, Fasilat Azeez, to implicate their eldest brother, Ayodele, over a family inheritance. The suspects said they were angry at their late father for giving Ayodele 40 cows and gave them 10 cows each as their own inheritance. Speaking during the week while being paraded by the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Samuel Okaula, in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, the suspects stated that they, in company of a fleeing suspect, Quadri Ayodele, killed the victims and pulled their corpses close to the residence of Ayodele to implicate him. Our correspondent gathered that Ayodele — on the discovery of the corpses near his house — was arrested, charged to court and remanded in prison custody. Okaula said the late woman’s husband, Kehinde Babatunde, of Igba-Iroko/Alapa village in Asa Local Government Area of the state reported that assailants had gruesomely murdered his wife and Azeez as they were hawking drugs and other items around the Gaa-Arasiko area near Alapa. Okaula said, “On interrogation, the suspects confessed that they both conspired to commit the heinous crime in order to implicate their eldest brother, Ayodele Amadu, now in prison, who was alleged to have taken a larger portion of the property left behind by their late father. They also confirmed that their elder brother is innocent of the crime.” Another suspect, Segun Bamidele, was paraded for beheading a farmer, Mr. Sunday Owolabi of Ile-Oja compound, Omu-Aran in Kwara State. Okaula said Owolabi was beheaded in his farm at Rore village in Irepodun Local Government Area of the state. Okaula said though three suspects — Musa Aliyu, Kayode Musa and Bamidele — were arrested by police investigators, Bamidele confessed that he killed the victim with a cutlass in the victim’s farm and severed his head which he took to a herbalist for sale. The CP added that Bamidele took the policemen to a bush where he hid the head, which the police had retrieved. Bamidele said he acted under the influence of alcohol. Okaula also said the police arrested Abdullahi Yusuf, Salaudeen Jamiu and Ahmed Garba for allegedly robbing at Unique Hotels of the University of Ilorin Remedial School at Fufu and also some suspected cultists who struck at a college of education in the state recently. According to him, two locally-made single barrel guns and cartridges were recovered from the alleged robbers. He added that they confessed to the crime. http://punchng.com/brothers-kill-two-implicate-sibling-inheritance/

Hillary Clinton on Friday tapped Tim Kaine, a popular Spanish-speaking senator from the swing state of Virginia, to be her running mate in the White House showdown against Donald Trump. “I’m thrilled to announce my running mate, @timkaine, a man who’s devoted his life to fighting for others. -H,” the presumptive Democratic nominee tweeted. The 58-year-old senator swiftly tweeted his response, saying: “Just got off the phone with Hillary. I’m honored to be her running mate. Can’t wait to hit the trail tomorrow in Miami!” Kaine, an experienced foreign policy hand who serves on the Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services committees, could help Clinton bring in two key voting blocs: Hispanics and the battleground state of Virginia. Politically a middle-of-the-road Democrat, he is also seen as helping the former secretary of state win over votes from reluctant independent male voters. Widely seen as a safe choice for Clinton in a brutal election race, Kaine emerged as a frontrunner in the veepstakes because he ticks so many boxes. Clinton put out a series of tweets heaping praise on the senator, known for his affable manner as well as his expertise on matters of defense and foreign policy. “@timkaine is a relentless optimist who believes no problem is unsolvable if you put in the work to solve it,” Clinton wrote. “@timkaine’s guiding principle: the belief that you can make a difference through public service.” One of the tweets included a five-point graphic highlighting the senator’s youthful spell on a Jesuit mission in Honduras as well as his track record in fighting homelessness, discrimination and gun violence, in expanding early childhood education and in fostering a positive business environment in Virginia. The pick comes just days before the start of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, where Clinton — and now Kaine — next week are to be elevated as the nominees to the party’s presidential ticket. http://punchng.com/clinton-picks-tim-kaine-as-running-mate/ |

Thank you! I would say u only viewed the immediate benefits of the joint business without trying to envisage the possible future negative effects. Above all, we have to know the sector the business will evolved. Is it production/manufacturing, Engineering firms, telecommunication sectors etc? Because the contributors of the fund graduated with different disciplines and each unit within the company will definately be occupied according to individual disciplines. At the beginning the management of the company will be so exciting and encouraging. But as soon as the company start to generate income, there comes the problems. The channel through which the money is coming through will definately have upper hands and on the long run, others will put eyes to the unit and therefore, will not trust the said unit as they will believe there is illegitimate actions going on therein. What will happen to the demise of one or two partnerships of the business? See bro human being are dynamic in nature considering the numbers u mentioned above, it is practically impossible. Some will even go spiritual to achieve their selfish interests. Although, it all depend on the nature of the business they want to engage into. |
