Despite the spirited moves aimed at stalling the defection of Senate President Bukola Saraki and members of the Reformed All Progressives Congress (R-APC) to the rival Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) indications have emerged that the President of the Senate is set to launch his presidential aspiration for the 2019 race.

Sources in the polity said that since Saraki is of the view that the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has already been ceded to President Muhammadu Buhari, the next available sport is the coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) which will be fielding candidates on the ticket of the PDP.

It was confirmed that notwithstanding the offers that might be placed on the table by President Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership of the APC at a meeting to be held in the presidential Villa later on Sunday, the R-APC has concluded on the need for defection.

Sources said that by listening to the President and members of the APC, the R-APC leaders were only showing courtesy to the office of the President.

A series of moderate earthquakes in southern and western Iran on Sunday injured an estimated 25 people, state television said.

Two quakes struck a remote region near the town of Lar in the southern Hormozgan province shortly after 0500 GMT, according to the US Geological Survey.

The strongest of the two had a magnitude of 5.4.

Another 5.9-magnitude quake struck a rural part of the western Kermanshah province at 1007 GMT.

An AFP reporter said that quake was “felt strongly” across the border in Iraq’s Sulaymaniyah province.

State television said some damage had been reported in villages and that 25 people had been injured, without giving details of their locations.

The immediate past Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Umar Ahmed Imam has left the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kogi State for the Social Democratic Party, SDP.



Announcing his defection on Sunday in Lokoja, the former speaker said he was shut out of APC and never recognized as a party member much more of a leader down to his own ward.

Imam, who will be contesting under the SDP for the August 11th by-election to fill the vacant seat of the Lokoja/Kogi federal constituency, said he waited for several months, hoping that the APC leadership would encourage participation of every party members in its affairs but rather the division and crisis continued.



According to him, “It is no longer news that the APC has equally imposed a candidate for the forthcoming House of representative by-election to fill in the vacancy occasioned by the death of the member representing Lokoja/Kogi federal constituency without complying with the rules of internal democracy.



“Therefore, the decision to defect from the APC is based on the foregoing and the continued fractionalization of the Party at both the National and State levels given the leadership crisis within the party.”

The father of Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi says his son has not called him in over five years.
Pa Obi said his relationship with the football star is fraught with “issues” and that he has made several attempts to “fix it” to no avail.

Mikel’s father said he is a target of kidnappers because they believe he has access to the money his son is earning.

Pa Obi, who has been kidnapped twice, made the disclosure in an interview with Daily Trust.

“Isn’t that why kidnappers are targeting me? Because they think the money he makes, he ships it to me to make investments,” he said.

“It is an issue, but we don’t know what to do. It’s over five years now without a phone call from him to me. But he communicates with his mother.

“There is nothing I have not done to fix it. God has told me that I should not feel hurt.

“When we start to talk about it, I say, ‘Well, as long as I see him on TV, doing great, no problem’.

Police arrest 117 killer suspects in Zamfara

The police have confirmed the arrest of 117 persons suspected to be connected with the recent killings in parts of Zamfara state.
The Zamfara State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr, Mohammed Shehu, said in a statement that the killings are in Gusau, Shinkafi Local Government Areas and other parts of the state.

According to him, the suspects were arrested during a raid carried out by the Special Tactical Squad of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) in conjunction with the Command Tactical team on Thursday, which lasted for several hours.



He also noted that the Command Tactical team arrested 72 suspected bandits who specialize in using unregistered motorcycles to ferry kidnapped victims to their hideouts, while 73 unregistered motorcycles were recovered from them.

The command, therefore, warned all criminals at large to repent and surrender their arms to the Police or face dire consequences when they are caught

Deaths due to liver diseases are on the rise in the United States and researchers have blamed it on the increasing consumption of alcohol.

A research led by the University of Michigan, found that deaths due to cirrhosis (a severe liver disease) or liver disease is on the rise in the country.
The lead researcher, Elliott Trapper, a liver specialist from University of Michigan, and his colleague Neehar Parikh, noticed that in 1999-2016, the number of deaths caused by cirrhosis has been on the rise in 49 out of 50 states.

The researchers found that cirrhosis-caused deaths have increased 65 per cent and alcohol use is a prominent cause of late stage liver diseases.

Unfortunately, the most affected population are the youth.

A planned defection of the members of the Reformed All Progressives Congress in the House of Representatives earlier scheduled for Thursday ( yesterday) , was shifted to next week , The PUNCH has learnt.
