Politics / Breaking: APC Secretariat Property Set Ablaze by Baiyeri18: 4:52pm On Aug 07, 2018
THE crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Delta State took a dramatic twist Tuesday as properties at the Isoko South Local Government secretariat of the party were set ablaze by aggrieved party members.

Though the circumstances surrounding the incident were hazy at press time, sources however said it was not unconnected with the harmonization of ward executives of the party in the council area. A dependable source in the area who pleaded anonymity, told Vanguard that “Yesterday (Monday) Chairmen of the party in Oleh wards 1 and 2 were sworn -in. “Today some aggrieved members of the wards mobilized and broke into the secretariat which is a rented apartment, removed all the chairs, tables and some other office properties, brought them outside and set them ablaze.

“The party is trying to harmonize the executives so that there will be peace in the party, but these people were not happy with the way the process was being carried out because they feel it is non inclusive”

Politics / BREAKING: SSS Lifts Siege On National Assembly by Baiyeri18: 3:22pm On Aug 07, 2018
Security operatives have lifted the siege on the National Assembly.
The lift came barely an hour after the announcement of the sack of the Director General of the State Security Service (SSS), Lawal Daura.
It also came some minutes after some senators left the National Assembly premises.
The mask-wearing officers, mainly of the SSS, who blocked entrance to the National Assembly from early hours of Tuesday, left the assembly gate at 2:49 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
They had earlier told senators and journalists they were acting on order from above.
The senators who left the assembly complex earlier, were mainly of the opposition party, PDP.
Many senators of the ruling APC were not at the NASS on Tuesday amidst reports they were planning the removal of Senate President Bukola Saraki.
A senator, Dino Melaye, vowed PDP senators will continue their vigilance until their APC colleagues back down on the plan.
He described Mr Daura’s sack as attempt to salvage the failed integrity of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.
Ben Murray-Bruce and Forster Ogola were other senators who left the National Assembly.

Nairaland / General / 116 Nigerians Trapped In Libya Slave Camps — Presidential Aide by Baiyeri18: 10:24am On Aug 06, 2018
and Diaspora, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has said.

Mrs Dabiri-Erewa said this in a statement by her media aide, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, on Sunday in Abuja.

She said the Federal Government and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) have located the detention camps of the Nigerians, and offered to bring those willing back home.

The Nigeria Mission in Tripoli, she said, had traced the migrants to Osama Detention Centre, Zawiya, Libya.

According to her, 116 Nigerian migrants have been processed online by the Nigeria Mission and IOM for repatriation back to Nigeria.

However, 24 of them insisted they must get to Europe.

She said that Federal Government moved to rescue the detained migrants after their plea for assistance through video clip from Libya on July 8.

In the video, the stranded Nigerians who veiled their faces, said that their final destination is Europe but were intercepted by security agents in Libya and locked up under dehumanising conditions.

The migrants had in the video said they were being tortured to death daily under a dehumanising condition.

“We are dying here. Come and rescue us. Europe is our final destination but we are trapped in Libya subjecting us to inhuman treatment”, one of the Nigerians said in the video.

Mrs Dabiri-Erewa said that 9,438 Nigerian migrants had so far been repatriated by the Federal Government and the IOM.

She gave assurance that President Muhammadu Buhari would continue to ensure that all stranded migrants willing to return home are brought back.

President Muhammadu Buhari early this year directed immediate evacuation of Nigerians from Libya.

According to her, those that have been brought back are being profiled and enrolled in various technical and vocational training centres with relevant agencies and NGOs.

She appealed to Nigerian youths to avail themselves the opportunities in the country as against risking their lives to search for a non-existing and deadly greener pastures abroad. (NAN)

The incident happened at Owanta Aliosimi quarters of Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State.

The victim’s father, Moses Monye, who confirmed to DAILY POST the death of his daughter, said “Vivian and her brother were assisting me to bail out water that took over our apartment after

the mid day heavy rainfall when suddenly BEDC restored power supply to our area, which caused electric surge.

Nairaland / General / DPR: Power Generation To Improve By 3,000MW Through Zero Gas Flare by Baiyeri18: 9:15am On Jul 31, 2018
Nigeria’s current power generation capacity can be ramped up with additional 3,000 megawatts of electricity if the federal government can harness the amount of gas being flared at 139 flare locations of the Niger Delta, the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has said.
This is just as the agency in one of its report disclosed that in 2017, it contributed N748 billion to the national treasury, from oil tax and royalties, representing 83 per cent of its target for the year.

With the country sitting at the seventh position in the global gas flaring index, with 11 per cent of its gas production flared routinely and non-routinely, the federal government through the National Gas

Flare Commercialisation programme (NGFC) is targeting to achieve a zero gas flaring milestone by 2020.

Delivering a paper at the just concluded workshop for energy correspondents in Lagos, organised by the DPR, an official from the agency’s Gas Monitoring and Regulation unit, Mr. Olawoleola Ogunsola, pointed out that Nigeria’s potential to light up Africa was realistic if it can leverage its gas resources.

He said, “As at January one, 2017, our national gas reserve was 198.74 trillion cubic feet (tcf). We are trying to meet the 600tcf in future. 11 per cent of our national gas production is flared which is about 888 tonnes of standard cubic feet per day.”

According to him, the solution to gas flaring is for government to construct pipelines to bring the gas being flared into one position for commercialisation; find markets for gas flared in the country, stressing that, that was the purpose and mission of the NGFC programme.

“We made a mistake with the programme in the past because we allocated flare sites to companies without both technical and financial capacity to harness them.

“However, things have changed because DPR is now making sure those who got earlier allocations have everything it takes to take the gas into the market for sale”, he said.

He noted that government would be responsible for finding market for gas currently being flared unlike in the past, and harped on the need to make gas exploration in the country more attractive to investors.

Politics / Defection: PDP Prepares Ground For Saraki, Tambuwal, Ahmed by Baiyeri18: 8:37am On Jul 30, 2018
Democratic Party, PDP, is, this week, set to receive and celebrate defectors from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in a high profile celebration.

The APC on its part said, yesterday, that it was also perfecting plans to win back its leverage by poaching some high profile members of the PDP even as it said yesterday that it had worked out plans to secure its ascendancy.

Meanwhile, Reformed All Progressives Congress, R-APC, has lamented mutterings by ministers who it claimed had been locked out from the president.

The reception for the defectors, Vanguard gathered, could coincide with the defections from the APC by Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State and some senior party officials being on the wings. The precise date of the defection of Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, was as at yesterday unclear.

Governor Tambuwal, Vanguard gathered last night, could defect after the report of a committee set up to decide the fate of his political machine reports to party stakeholders tomorrow.

Following a meeting with stakeholders in Sokoto, last Thursday with no unanimity reached, Vanguard gathered that it was decided to enlarge the consultations among some other stakeholders from outside the state.

APC’ll field only popular candidates

Meanwhile, the APC was, yesterday, perfecting strategies to sustain itself as a ruling party through the fielding of what a high profile party source said as popular candidates.

“APC will field popular candidates and not leaders’ candidates, but candidates of the people because that is the way the party can win elections, grassroots candidates, and that is why the chairman is not worried,” the source said yesterday.

Politics / Oyo APC Loses Lawmaker, Olusegun Olaleye To PDP by Baiyeri18: 6:39pm On Jul 28, 2018
A member of the Oyo State House of Assembly representing Ibadan North II state constituency, Mr Olusegun Olaleye has make good his decision to dump the ruling APC and joining the People’s Democratic Party formally as he attends the party’s ward meeting.

Olaleye described the switch of allegiance as “a return to Canaan, the promised land.
The lawmaker, who had on June 28 disclosed his decision to dump the APC, said his decision was based on the “bastardisation of the ideals of Lam Adesina that he believed in, in the current APC in Oyo State.”

Speaking at the Ward 11, Ibadan North Local Government, where he was received by the PDP Chairman of the local government, Mr Seun Adelore, Olaleye said he went astray in the APC but was back to the party that will form the next government in the state.

According to Olaleye, the leader of the PDP in the state, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, held the “ark of governance in the 2019 election in the state”, describing the PDP as a moving train which boasted of huge followers across the state and good leaders like Senator Ladoja, Chief Sarafadeen Alli and Senator Femi Lanlehin.

He urged the people of the state, particularly the constituency to get their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) so as to greatly determine who rules them in 2019.

Other state lawmakers who accompanied Olaleye to the event include Messrs. Ademola Ige, Fatai Adesina and Niyi Adeoye.

Adelore, the party Chairman in the local government in his remark, declared that the PDP in the state was poised for huge victory at all levels of government, in the 2019 election. He described the PDP as a big and accommodating party that all residents of the state should belong.

The event was also witnessed by large supporters of the lawmaker who also decamped to the PDP with Olaleye.

Politics / Buhari Advises Supporters To Suspend Campaigns by Baiyeri18: 11:27am On Jul 28, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari Saturday appealed to his supporters across the nation to suspend campaigns for his re-election in compliance with the electoral law.
The president, whose appeal was contained in a statement by his spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina, said it had come to the realisation of the presidency that his supporters had started campaigns through advocacies and placement of advertisements in the media.

According to Adesina, the commitment of the supporters is appreciated but they must be mindful of existing timetable for electoral campaign as set by the electoral commission that is yet to be effective.

Furthermore, Adesina who said there would be enough time to campaign for Buhari’s election, added that commencing campaigns now would amount to jumping the gun which he advised them to avoid.

He added that while showcasing the achievements of the administration now is in order, outright canvassing for votes is off-side.

“It has been observed that some fervent supporters of President Muhammadu Buhari have begun what may be interpreted as political campaigns in their advocacies and advertisements in the mass media.
We appreciate their enthusiasm, borne out of desire to garner support for an administration that is actuated by nothing else, other than service for motherland, but we hereby appeal for patience, so that the game can be played according to the rules.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has a timetable for political campaigns, and we urge committed supporters round the country (and beyond) to be mindful of such.

“There will be ample time ahead to trumpet the good works of the Buhari administration, and solicit re-election, all for the good of our country and her people.

“While a chronicle of the achievements of the administration is in order now, outright canvasing may amount to jumping the gun. We are an administration committed to due process and scrupulous respect for rules, law and order.

“We appreciate our massive supporters nationwide, and urge them to exercise restraint till the race commences officially as stipulated by law.”

Politics / 2019 : INEC Registered Foreigners, Under-aged Voters – Southern, Middle Belt Eld by Baiyeri18: 8:16am On Jul 27, 2018
Elder statesmen from the South and the Middle Belt have accused the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, of registering foreigners and under-aged voters in Northern Nigeria.
To this end, the elders rejected the current voters registers, asking INEC to jettison same, while also asking for the immediate retirement of service chiefs who they said were long over due for retirement.

Operating under the aiges of the Southern Elders and Middle Belt Forum, the elders made the demands during a courtesy call to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, in Abuja on Wednesday.

The Forum was made up of Afenifere , Ohanaeze Ndigbo , the Pan-Niger Delta Elders Forum (PANDEF) and Middle Belt Forum.

Members of the delegation included Professor Chigozie Ogbu, Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga, retd, Air Commodore Dan Suleiman, former Governor Olusegun Mimiko, Cornelius Adebayo and Chief Olu Falae.

Led by Chief Ayo Adebanjo of Afenifere , the elders also demanded the support of the lawmakers in the realisation of the restructuring of the country under a federal system of government.

Adebanjo said only restructuring of the country in a federal system of government would guarantee the unity of the country.

He said: “The current voters registration exercise has been compromised and marred by irregularities by the registration of under-aged and foreigners being recorded in some parts of the north.

“Accordingly, we call for the total cancellation of the INEC voters register, support and insist on restructuring and true federalism and call on the National Assembly to immediately commence a legislative agenda in that regard.

“Anything beyond restructuring, we are not for it and we believe in championing this cause, we need the support of the House.

“By conveying the idea of restructuring to you does not mean to break up Nigeria. It is the only thing that can keep Nigeria together in peace.

“We do not think that after being together for so long we should break up but we don’t want to be in a Nigeria that is dominated by one section of the country, that is anti a section of the country and extremely pro another section of the country.

“Anyone one who is opposed to the restructuring of the country is the enemy number one. We want a constitution that is agreeable to all of us…”

At least 28 people were killed and 35 wounded in a suicide attack on a polling station in the southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta, officials said, as millions voted in a nationwide election Wednesday.
The bomber) was trying to enter the polling station. When police tried to stop him he blew himself up," a local administration official in Quetta, Hashim Ghilzai, told AFP. The incident and toll were confirmed by a second senior local official.
The attack was not immediately claimed by any group.

Balochistan, Pakistan's poorest and most restive province, suffers from Islamist and separatist insurgencies.

It was hit by several bombings during the brief but acrimonious election campaign - including a devastating blast claimed by the Islamic State group which killed 153 people this month, and was Pakistan's deadliest ever suicide attack.
An earlier attack in the province on Wednesday left one policeman dead and three wounded when a hand grenade was thrown at a polling station in the village of Koshk, in Khuzdar district.

The military has stationed over 370,000 personnel across Pakistan to ensure security for the election, bolstered by an additional 450,000 police.

Politics / How I Escaped Security Operatives’ Siege – Saraki by Baiyeri18: 1:29pm On Jul 24, 2018
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, on Tuesday relayed his experience in the hands of security operatives, who laid siege to his house, to his colleagues.
Security agencies early Tuesday morning laid siege on the homes of Mr Saraki and Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu in Abuja.

The move is said to be a ploy to prevent them from making it to the National Assembly today because of a plan by many lawmakers to decamp from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Mr Saraki, however, made his way to the Senate chamber at about 10:40 a.m. and presided over the plenary. Mr Ekweremadu did not make it to plenary and the siege on his home was still on at midday.

Reacting to a motion on the siege on his home and that of his deputy, Mr Saraki said the plenary would not have held if not for his preparation.

“The road leading to my place was cordoned off and all cars coming in and out as early as 6:30 were being stopped and you have to come down.

“My convoy was stopped from moving. Given something that one was prepared for, I had my own car too. So the deputy senate president called me and said he could not come here.

“And as you are all aware, very late yesterday, at about 8 p.m., I received a letter asking me to report to the police on a case of this Offa robbery which had been concluded before now

Politics / Buhari Meets Kwankwaso, Other Senators In Aso Rock by Baiyeri18: 11:13pm On Jul 23, 2018
Against the backdrop of police summons for Senate President Bukola Saraki, President Muhammadu Buhari has met with some senators led by Rabiu Kwankwaso in an apparent bid to convince them to remain in the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

The senators were sighted at the presidential villa, Abuja on Monday night along with Jigawa State governor, Abubakar Badaru.

Kwankwaso representing Kano State is also believed to be on the verge of leaving the APC having fallen out with his state governor and former protege, Umar Ganduje.

There had been reports that Saraki and Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, were to meet with the president and Vice President’s Yemi Osinbajo last Sunday over the same issue but the meeting did not materialize.

Saraki, who has hinted that he was considering his future in the APC, has again been summoned by the Inspector General of Police to appear at the office of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) in Abuja, the Federal Capital territory (FCT), over his alleged linkage to the wide-ranging robbery operation that resulted in the death of 33 people in Offa, Kwara State in April
