Nooooo, Olu of Warri is a historical title.

The title of every king always State their kingdom e.g Emir of Kano, Dein of Agbor, Amanayabo of Opobo, Obong of Calabar.

Warri is the name of a place while Itsekiri is a name of a tribe.

It was in 1951 that the Western Regional Government temporarily accepted the demands of other tribes in WARRI PROVINCE (not not be confused with Warri Kingdom just as Enugu is not exactly the same as Enugu State or Sokoto exactly the same as Sokoto State) to declare that the king should be addressed as Olu of Itsekiri.

This was however reversed in 1952 in an amicable manner in which both sides reached a compromise; the name of the Province was Changed to a neutral name that accommodate every tribes- DELTA PROVINCE.

Nobody is contesting the ownership or boundaries of Ogbe-Ijo, Isaba, Okumagba and those places. There names have always been their names, though they were in the old Warri Pronvince but not originally parts of Warri Kingdom. The city recently expanded to those areas just as Yaba, Ajegunle, Iponri ,Itire weren't parts of original Lagos Kingdom but are parts of Lagos State.

Today, the city of Onitsha now include Nkpor and almost include Ogidi and many neighbouring villages but they weren't parts of Onitsha in 1952.
According to oral history passed from one generation of Ijaws from Ogbe-Ijoh to another generation, Warri, a corrupted version of the Ijaw word, "Wari", which means house, was founded by an Ijaw man named Ewein, a great hunter and fisherman.

In 1906, with the rapid growth in trading activities, the British acquired Ogbe-Ijoh village (an Ijaw community) in order to develop it as "whites only" residential area and headquarters of her Warri Province Administration. The people of Ogbe-Ijoh were resettled on the Ogbe-Ijoh market and the British signed a 99years lease with the Ogbe-Ijohs. However, the Ijaws felt humiliated by the forced eviction and the handling of the land acquisition. The then Governor of Benin River, a British political agent who handled the acquisition and ejection of the Ijaws was Chief Doru (Dogho) Numa, an Itsekiri man. The above incident probably marked the beginning of the bad blood between the Ijaws of Warri and the Itsekiris.
So Warri original is different with ijaw and itsekiri version let be clear on that , I asked you previously where is Warri according to youhuh

And again Chief Ayiri crying foul over ogbe ijoh Warri Kingdom in this publication prove the itsekiri mindset of claiming Warri as it own

Why crying wolf where there's none?

The supreme court has ruled that the Olu of Warri is a valid title. QED.

1) Before 1950, the whole of Delta State was known as Warri Pronvince
2) The King of Warri has always been known historically as the Olu of Warri. The full title of kings always specify their domains e.g Obi of Onitsha ( Not Obi of Igbos), Dein of Agbor (not Dein of Ika tribe), Ooni of Ife (not Ooni of Yoruba) etc

3) Urhobos, Ijaws and other tribes petitioned the Western Regional Government that the title of the king is misleading because he wasn't the traditional ruler of all the tribes in Warri Pronvince.

4) The Western Regional Government accepted the compliants of the Ijaws, Urhobos and other tribes and issued an official gazzet that the king should use the title of 'Olu of Itsekiri' in 1951.

5) The Itsekiris felt dissatisfied and wrote their own pettion to higher authorities, the Governor-General of Nigeria in Lagos and copied the British Government in London who referred the matters back to the Western Regional Government to look into it.

6) Awolowo called a meeting of parliamentarians from that area to iron out the matter.
They later took the case to Western Regional Assembly for thorough debates.

7) After much debates into the matter, amicable resolutions accepted by all parties were reached;

a) That the name of the province be changed from Warri Pronvince to Delta Province.

b) That the Olu could revert to his earlier title of Warri (since his reign will only be limited to his town of Warri).

cool With passage of time, Warri expanded into territories of other tribes. Many neighbouring villages also started calling their areas 'Warri'
Let's get some things clear

Before 1950 there was nothing like Olu of Warri , we had only Olu of itsekiri ,it was 1952 the Chief Awolowo succumbed to the pressure from itsekiri to elevate the status of the Olu of Itsekiri in par with other traditional rulers. Such as, Olu of Ibadan, Oba of Lagos, Ooni of Ife, Oba of Benin etc., whose titles reflect overlordship over territories. Which the itsekiri tried to use to claim the terrine of ijaws and urbobos but failed .

His town of Warri according to your quote ,where is Warri according to you? Cos Ogbe ijoh,Isaba ,egbama , gharamatu, , Agbassa , Okumagba never changed borders even before the entry of GINUWA the disowned son sent away by the oba of Benin as it was the ijaws who help him resettled into this terrine , he even married an ijaw lady whom he killed before moving from there. Is it possible he came to Warri terrine before the people he met there?

Finally itsekiri have their take on the origin naming of Warri so do ijaws .

The Olu of Warri title is a traditional title and has nothing to do with LGA.

The issues were thoroughly debated and resolved in the Western Regional Assembly in 1952 with amicable solutions acceptable to both sides;

1) That Warri Pronvince (the whole of present Delta State) should be renamed Delta Province, a neutral name that accommodate all tribes in the Pronvince.

2) That the King of Warri can revert back to his historical title, The Olu of Warri. The Western Regional Government ,acting on petitions by Urhobos, Ijaws and other tribes had earlier in 1951 accepted to change the title to Olu of Itsekiri.

However, the Itsekiris cross petitioned to Lagos and the British Government.
What was engineered by the then western regional gov Abi huh Very funny anyway gone are the times when itsekiri use their Yoruba and Benin affiliations to oppress other tribes , we know ourselves now.
We should be celebrating with you guys on your smooth transition and your young Olu. But this attitude is the reason why itsekiri seem to be problem with Warri not moving forward.

I hope you know that the Ijaws and Urhobos have taken the Olu of Warri matter to court and they lost at the Apex court?
No court in Nigeria gave Olu jurisdiction over the terrains of ijaws and urbobos in Warri and no court pronounced itsekiri as owners of Warri .Today we have Pere of Ogbe ijaws Warri Kingdom , clearly we re not fighting with anyone over terrine. Why do itsekiri like giving false picture of Warri to outsiders like they own the terrinehuh?? Itsekiri doesn't own Warri south ,nor south west nor north . Warri south West have ijaws and itsekiri areas ,which ogbe ijoh happen to be the head quarter, Warri north at Koko with ijaws and itsekiri terrine ,and Warri south with itsekiri, urbobos and ijaws . So why trying to paint a false representation of Warri to outsiders.

Because u seem lost. Urhobo doesn't have a unified history, the urhobo in warri, okpe n ughelli has different history.
Even okpe people will tell u they are not urhobo.
So what exactly do u mean by urhobo history.
Same way Ugborodo people insist they re not part of Olu of itsekiri kingdom right

Oga face reality and stop trying to push itsekiri propaganda, your anti ijaws and urbobos sentiments shows in your writing , in the end itsekiri people remains the only tribe in Delta without an LGA of it own, trying to claim other terrains with a title

I really don't know why the urhobo and ijaws are scared of itsekiri that made them created the own kingdom within the itsekiri king, itsekiri are not dragging those land with them, the urhobo own those land just as itsekiri own land in urhobo quarters too.

Speaking about the crown, itsekiri has many ancestral crowns, it is allowed in itsekiri for a king to make his own crown of he doesn't want to wear his father's crown. So the crown is not even an issue here.

LET PEACE REIGN IN RESPECT TO THE TITLE OLU OF WARRI.

The Itsekiri people do not have problem with Urhobo speaking people. Having issues of title to lands with Okumagba family and Agbassa people who are Urhobos does not amount to Itsekiri people having ethnic war with Urhobo speaking people. Itsekiris are peace loving people and will continue to be peace loving.

I particularly don't see any of my friend in Warri on ethnic lines because we share almost everything but Warri as a city and as a name has it own history from pre colonial, to inter colonial and post colonial era and by virtue of Supreme Court judgements to lands which ethnic sentiments can no longer change.

In post and inter colonial times, Warri served as the base for Portuguese, Dutch and British slave traders hence early western education by Itsekiri people. Warri was ruled by Itsekiri elites and the last GOVERNOR OF WARRI is the person of Chief Dore Numa. Warri was made PROVINCIAL headquarters (WARRI PROVINCE) by the British in the early 20th century.

Because WARRI PROVINCE then covered the whole of present day delta state, the OLU OF WARRI TITLE gave birth to protest from various ethnic groups within the province in 1950 through 1951 that the Olu of Warri title should be changed to Olu of Itsekiri which was temporally granted by the government for peace to reign.

But Warri is a name of a place to a people, aside being the capital of the then Warri province. there is nowhere like no man's land, everywhere are attached to a people. The Itsekiri people responded by virtue of history that they don't own the entire Warri province but they own Warri as a place, as a town and as a people such should reflect in the title of their King.

After the coronation of Ginuwa II, Itsekiri people petitioned Lagos and London, making a case for their Olu's title. This matter became an issue of topical importance, and no less a person than Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe then contributed to the debate in the West African Pilot of 14 May 1940 as follows:
"His highness Ginuwa II is Olu of the Itsekiri speaking people who live in Warri Township. If the matter is to be discussed in detail, it will be found that a definite title is necessary, in which case the Olu of Warri seems to be most historically and correct. When we speak of the Oba of Lagos, we refer to the paramount Native Ruler of Lagos Township, although Lagos is populated mainly by Yoruba speaking peoples and Lagos is part of Yoruba land. So too, in the case of his Highness Ginuwa II, the Olu of Warri is the paramount Native Ruler of Itsekiri speaking people and Warri town is Itsekiri Land"

That was vintage Dr. Azikiwe, a patriot and nationalist also joined the debate on the OLU OF WARRI TITLE in those days. Then, when independence drew near, Awolowo, the government leader in the Western Region, well known for never tocing Dr. Azikiwe's political lines, had to take the matter of the Olu of Warri title to Parliament in 1952. After a healthy debate there, the Delta parliamentarians accepted that WARRI PROVINCE be changed to DELTA PROVINCE so that Warri, as a name, an a place should revert to those who had it.

On the prompting by London, the governor general in Lagos, following the parliamentary approval of the title "THE OLU OF WARRI" In Ibadan in May 1952, wrote a report to London dated 14 Oct 1952 justifying the change, saying it was based on "sound historical grounds especially as Warri Division (sic. Jekri-sobo Division) which consisted of two areas, the Itsekiri and the Sobo area" had been separated (C544/708/of Colonial records)

This change, acclaimed as a victory by all parties including (Urhobos) involved, removed the universal impression that all ethnic groups in the province would be regarded as subjects of the Olu of Warri because of the former name "Warri Province". The non-Itsekiri Parliamentarians were all satisfied with the change, Hon... Otutu, a Kwale parliamentarian on their behalf, proclaimed in the Daily Times of 31 January 1953: "we accept the change." On the Itsekiri side, rightful title of their Olu had reverted to the ancient throne.

Note: Historical facts.

In recent, those protesting against the title of the Olu of Warri are ignorant of what their forebears had accepted and adopted approximately 60 years ago in good faith.

I repeat the Olu of Warri title has grown in history and legacy above ethnic lines. Warri is for everyone to stay but the title the Olu of Warri cannot be change in history.

THE CREATION OF NEW AND RIVAL KINGDOMS IN NIGERIA IS NOT PART OF THE ITSEKIRI PEOPLE CHARACTER.

Now the reading public may be able to assess from these verifiable facts and the reasonableness and
peace-loving nature of the Itsekiri in Delta State

The "Okumagba family" merely won a possessory title (see radical title) to a 281.1-acre farmland near Okere part of Warri by a court judgment and has sought to have a rival kingdom in Warri called "Okere Urhobo kingdom". Now look, "the Mene-Okotie family" of "Itsekiri extraction" has by a judgment in suit no. S/66/69 of the same Supreme Court won a 775.10-acre family land within the Urhobo kingdom of Mosagar, to the relief and joy of the entire Mosagar Community, the Mene-Okotie family has shunned setting up a kingdom there.

Also Gbolokposo, another Itsekiri Community, by another Supreme Court judgment, No. Sc/98/1993, has won and radically owns 1993.77 acres of their land under the overlordship of the Olu of Warri within the Uvwie kingdom in Urhobo land. Today they are living happily together and the Gbolokposo Itsekiri are not thinking of setting up any kingdom in Uvwie land.

If we go by ownership of land whether possessory ( given to settlers and customary tenants who have settle for a long time) or radical title given to (Aboriginals) by the equation,

1993.77 ÷ 281, 775.10 ÷ 281.1, this will give the Itsekiri people 7 kingdoms in Uvwie (URHOBO LGA) and approximately 3 Itsekiri kingdoms in Mosagar(IN URHOBO LGA) .

Should Itsekiri start saying that there should not be an Ovie of Uvwie or there should not be Ovie of Mosagar?

Should Itsekiri people start proliferating kingdoms in those places they have radical titles to land?I guess many Urhobos will frown. As much as people can choose to do what they like, We cannot afford to be having kingdoms on every piece of land.

1) The FG has nothing to do with Issues pertaining to Traditional Rulers, they are handled by the States and LGAs.

2) The original Warri is an Itsekiri Kingdom. Infact,Warri is the Anglicized form of Iwerre.

The city has however expanded into territories of the Isoko and Urhobos who have their own Traditional Rulers. Ijaw territories are also now very close to Warri city.
Keep telling yourself that , cos the history of Warri from ijaws and urbobos historians proof otherwise.
CultureRe: The Coronation Of Tsola Emiko As Olu Of Warri (Full Video) by bakar007:
EARLY WARRI ADMINSTRATIVE DOMAINS

In the pre-independence elections, Ijaws and Urhobos voted for late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe's National Council of Nigeria and the Camerouns, NCNC, while the Itsekiris voted for late Chief Obafemi Awolowo's Action Group, AG. Fortunately, for the Itsekiris, AG won the election in the Western Region and that marked the rise of Itsekiri political dominance. With their new political allies in AG, the Itsekiris mounted pressure on Chief Awolowo to create chieftaincy titles among the Itsekiris to reflect monopoly of lineage in Warri and also to establish a communal land trust for the Itsekiris.

Not to be perceived as been ungrateful to the Itsekiris for their support at the polls, Chief Awolowo succumbed to the pressure to elevate the status of the Olu of Itsekiri in par with other traditional rulers. Such as, Olu of Ibadan, Oba of Lagos, Ooni of Ife, Oba of Benin etc., whose titles reflect overlordship over territories. In 1952, the Itsekiri people's dream came true when the title of Olu of Itsekiri was changed to Olu of Warri. This prompted the 1952 riot of Warri which was marked by loss of lives and properties and also led to the expulsion of Itsekiris from Abraka, Eku, Kokori, Sapele etc., all Urhobo lands.

After the riot, what followed was series of law suit between the Itsekiris and the Ogbe-Ijohs. Chief Okotie-Eboh, a prominent Itsekiri son, then Federal Minister of Finance intervened. So, the litigious parties agreed to settle out-of-court. But, to the surprise of the Ijaws, the Itsekiri Communal Land Trust, in 1959, took control of the Land deed of 1906 and subsequent ones and started removing traces of Ogbe-Ijoh from the town and substituting in their place Itsekiri names.

Despite the far reaching implication of the title, Olu of Warri, and the influence of the Itsekiris, the Government of Western Region of Nigeria under the leadership of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo made provision for the exclusion of the Ijaws of Warri from the authority of the Olu of Warri. The legal provision is contained in the WESTERN REGION OF NIGERIA "CHIEFS LAW of 1957 Cap 19". With the creation of Bendel State, the chiefs law became applicable in Bendel State, but recapped as Cap 37 of 1977 in the LAWS OF BENDEL STATE OF NIGERIA now applicable in DELTA STATE.

The Chiefs Law of 1957 Cap 19 states: "The Olu of Warri is the prescribed authority of the Warri Division excluding Egbema, Gbaramatu and Ogbe-Ijoh Council Areas."

More succinctly put, the people of Gbaramatu, Ogbe-Ijoh, Egbema and Isaba Clans and their lands are excluded from the authority of the Olu of Warri and Itsekiris.

The autonomy of the Ijaws of Warri in the then Western Region Government of Chief Awolowo was further stipulated in the legal instrument, WRLN 176 OF 1955, which established Warri Divisional Council. The following is the make up of the seven councils:

Benin River Local Council, Headquarter at Gbokoda (Itsekiri)

Koko Local Council, Koko (Itsekiri)

Ugborodo Local Council, Ugborodo (Itsekiri)

Gbaramatu Local Council, Oporoza (Ijaw)

Ogbe-Ijoh Local Council, Ogbe-Ijoh (Ijaw)

Egbema Local Council Opuama (Ijaw)

Under Bendel State, Warri Division Council had five officially recognized Traditional Rulers with equal status. Gazette No. 51 Vol. 14 of 15 September, 1977 listed them as follows:
(a) The Olu of Warri (Itsekiri)
(b) The Pere of Egbema (Ijaw)
(c) The Pere of Ogbe-Ijoh (Ijaw)
(d) The Pere of Gbaramatu (Ijaw)
(e) The Pere of Isaba (Ijaw)
The above five Traditional Rulers representation was the same for the former Warri Local Government Area and the defunct Warri North and Warri South Local Government Areas. As of 1998, Delta State Traditional Councils of Chiefs includes the Pere of Egbema, the Pere of Ogbe-Ijoh, and the Olu of Warri as members. Traditionally, Obaship, Pereship and Ovieship are tied to the lands. As such, each of these five Traditional Rulers in Warri area has exclusive authority and overlordship over the lands they occupy.

Ironically, the land in Warri, on which the Olu of Warri's only palace is built, is privately owned. Leased to Wilson Gbesimi Emiko (Erejuwa 11) by Omagbemi for the Ewelofu of Ekurede-Itsekiri. In essence, the Olu of Warri, the Traditional Ruler of the Itsekiris whose ancestral homeland is Ode-Itsekiri, is a Ruler in exile and had to administer by remote control from Warri. It is unimaginable or an anathema for the Emir of Kano, Oba of Lagos, Oba of Benin, Oni of Ife, or any Traditional Ruler for that matter to buy land for any purpose in their respective domains. Yet, the Olu of Warri had to do just that, an indictment to the status of Itsekiris in Warri.

The fact that Ijaws of Warri are not settlers or tenants in Warri, but autonomous was affirmed by one of the eminent Itsekiri sons, Mr. A. O. Rewane. His affirmation is contained in suit No. LD/784/90 filed in a Lagos High Court, Lagos judicial division, in a case between him and other prominent Itsekiri leaders. His plead, in part, states: "The plaintiff will in this regard therefore contend that the Ijaw Clans such as Gbaramatu, Ogbe-Ijoh, and Egbema were never at any time under the autonomy of Olu of Warri as a prescribed authority."

To the best of our knowledge the landmass of Gbaramatu, Ogbe-Ijoh, Egbema and Isaba Clans have not changed, but have remained contiguous for centuries. It is therefore quite unsettling that the Itsekiris would continue in their path of self-delusion about ownership of Warri.

Press Release No 03 Sunday, August 1, 1999
For Immediate Release:
WARRI CRISIS:
THE TRUTH, THE WHOLE TRUTH, AND NOTHING BUT, THE TRUTH

The Itsekiri Survival Movement (ITSURMOV) in their various internet press releases claimed to own Warri sans the provision of any substantive proof. These sporadic, but subtle claims embedded in the body of their messages and the constant footnote reminders of ownership of Warri, that accompany each of their publication, are in our opinion, a shrewd psychological ploy designed to lend credence to their claim. This practice is predicated on the premise that, if you repeat a statement often enough without any credible opposition people might tend to, or validate the statement as true.

Under the circumstances, THE COUNCIL OF IJAW ASSOCIATIONS ABROAD, is compelled to counter ITSURMOV's relentless pursuit to indoctrinate unsuspecting Nigerian netters resident abroad and other concerned nationalities who surf the web to keep abreast of the events in the Niger Delta, with misleading land ownership claims. We present here, historical FACTS, not isolated frivolous court judgements, but authentic verifiable evidence that identified the true owners of Warri. We would like to state that, we do not construe the exposition below as a justification for the mayhem in Warri, nor do we condone the wanton destruction of properties and loss of lives in the Warri crisis. This is merely an exercise in the dissemination of pertinent information, which in our view will assist in unraveling some of the mystery surrounding the immediate causes of the Warri crisis. Pursuant to this objective, we shall also present here remote incidents that served as precursors to the present day unrest in Warri and her environs.

In our attempt to avoid bias and prejudice to the reader, we shall refrain from unnecessary editorial while presenting the FACTS. We believe that individuals can draw reasonable conclusions on the basis of the facts being provided.

ANCESTRAL HOMELAND OF THE ITSEKIRIS

History has it that, IGINUA (GINUWA) the ancestor of the ITSEKIRIS was a disowned son of Oba Olua of Benin. As a result, in 1480 Iginua was sent away from his home in Benin City and wandered to an unspecified location in the swampy forest regions around the Benin River. By a stroke of fate, he was picked up by the Ijaws of that region in their evil-forest referred to as 'SEIKIRI'. The Ijaws, in their usual act of kindness provided transportation to Iginua and his entourage, numbering about seventy people, all men, across the river to the Ijaws homeland of AMATU. This is the settlement were Iginua and his entourage underwent their first rehabilitation.

This view is supported by the account given by a British national and former professor of history at the University of Ibadan, Professor Allan Ryder, in his book titled "BENIN AND THE EUROPEANS 1485 - 1897". Chapter one, page 13 of the book reads, "Tradition relates that OLUA'S eldest son, IGINUA, became extremely unpopular in Benin where it was made clear that he would not be accepted as Oba. His father therefore…. sent him off…. into the swamp forest around the Benin River. Around this wandering band formed the embryonic Itsekiri Kingdom…". Note the reference is to Itsekiri Kingdom and not Warri Kingdom. In yet, another book titled "HISTORY OF THE ITSEKIRI" written by a renowned Itsekiri historian, William A. Moore, came more revelations. He wrote, "Prior to the advent of the Benin Prince Iginua, the territory now known as the Kingdom of ITSEKIRI or IWERE, was inhabited by three tribes, namely, Ijaws, Sobos and the Mahims. The most populous among them were the Sobos. They (Sobos) occupied the hinterland while the Ijaws occupied the coastline and the Mahims squatted on the seashore near the Benin River…. Prince Ginuwa first landed at Amatu where he squatted for about three decades. He moved to Oruselemo where he married an Ijaw woman named Derumo. After several years stay at Oruselemo, a dispute arose between him and the Ijaws of Gulani (Ogulagha) on account of the woman, Derumo who was killed by him…..He therefore moved to Ijala where he later died and Ijijen (Ijeyem), his senior son took his place. Hence Ijala is held to be the Olu's burial ground by the Itsekiri. Ijijen led the entourage from Ijala to Iwere or Ale-ode-Itsekiri…." The settlement at Ode-Itsekiri, the ancestral homeland of Itsekiris occurred at about 1520AD.

IGINUA and his entourage haven been picked up in that portion of the forest known to the Ijaws as 'evil-land' were aptly named by the Ijaws as "SEIKIRI-OTU", meaning people from the 'evil-land'. 'SEI', in Ijaw language means 'EVIL', 'KIRI' means LAND, while OTU means PEOPLE. Similar Ijaw compound words that are descriptive of land that, some of the readers would recognize are; AMAKIRI, BOROKIRI, TORUKIRI, TARAKIRI, DAUKIRI etc. With the passage of time, SEIKIRI-OTU became adulterated to ITSEKIRI by the non-indigenes, but the Ijaws to-date, still maintain the usage of SEIKIRI-OTU in reference to the descendants of IGINUA. Thus, ITSEKIRI, is not a derivative of either an Edo(Bini) or Yoruba language, but of an Ijaw word that underwent an innocent transformation.

It is a sad commentary that, today the descendants of Iginua are claiming ownership of the territories of their benefactors with utter disregard to the magnanimity of their hosts. How ungrateful or low could one get? We would like to remind these descendants that "those whose palm kernels were broken for them by a benevolent spirit should not forget to be humble." History surely will not forgive them, should they continue in their path of self-aggrandizement.

THE MAKING OF WARRI METROPOLIS

Upon completion of their offices, the British named the new headquarters Warri Township and since then Ogbe-Ijoh officially became known as Warri Township. Even then, the Colonial government granted all leases to individuals and corporate entities in the name of Ogbe-Ijoh. Today, the name Warri Township covers other nearby villages including the Government Reservation Area-GRA, Elders town, Market road and the portion of lands specified in the Warri Township Plan No. 1. Further collaboration is provided by the Warri Township assessment report prepared by one Mr. P. P. Lynch in July 16, 1928 and sent to the Secretary Southern Provinces, Lagos. The report is available at the National Archives, file No. 20653. The report, in part, reads; "The original settlement which in due course became the nucleus around which the population settled is known as Ogbe-Ijoh and the name is still retained to define that portion of the town around the present market. As the name indicated Ogbe-Ijoh was originally an Ijaw settlement and translated literally means, I am informed 'The Ijaw fish market'.……The Ijaw fisher more always at home in them canoes than on land fished up and down the stretch of water which now forms the Warri enchorage and made use of the settlement to sell their catches. In the main the purchasers came firm the Old Established Sobo hamlet of AGBASSA and the more recent Jekri village of Okere. ….Beyond the swamp, in a westerly direction, stood the comparatively large village of AGBASSA while on the side the growing hamlet of Okere was rapidly extending its boundaries… intercommunication between these villages and the riverside settlement was maintained by means of "bush" paths which meandered around the edge of the swamp."

By contrast, Ode-Itsekiri, the ancestral homeland of the Itsekiris, is an Island community several kilometers away from Warri metropolis. As a reminder, Ode-Itsekiri is part of the 'Seikiri' that was eventually given to their ancestor, Iginua. It is informative to note here that, Ode-Itsekiri, the "Warri" of the Itsekiris is often erroneously referred to as Old Warri or Big Warri. This is the Warri or Iwere referred to in history books as the capital City of the Itsekiris.
CultureRe: The Coronation Of Tsola Emiko As Olu Of Warri (Full Video) by bakar007:
ibuildstuff:
What ever u learnt was wrong.

The person that told u the story, did u ask how the name warri came about?

Lemme give u a brief history,
The itsekiri people call the land iwerre, and their king olu of iwerre.

Note that the itsekiris where the first tribe in Niger Delta to come in contact and made relationship with Europeans. This relationship gave itsekiri an advantage and influence over other tribes in the region.

It was the Europeans trying to pronounce iwerre that lead the word warri, because when Europeans pronounce iwerre we hear warri. That was how the word warri came to be.

For some reason the name because what a large portion of delta state was called. Infact the entire Delta state was called warri province before it was changed to Delta state.

Secondly there has always been one king in warri for the pass 540 years and that king is the olu of warri. It was only recently about less than 10 year before the ijaw of gbaramatu started having king, same as the urhobo in okere community and the urhobo is agbasa community.
Ijaw and urhobo never really had royalty like the itsekiri, they only started doing so recently. You don't expect the government to give the same respect to a 10 yrs old throne it give to a 500 yrs throne.
The government will always respect the 500yrs throne more.

Also the urhobo n ijaw don't have one king like the itsekiri, they have multiple king and some of this king are self imposed maybe if the individual has money that's another the govts won't take them serious.

The only urhobo king that is of the same level as the itsekiri king is that of okpe. Okpe is an entirely different location different from warri.

Another source of confusion here is that the name warri has been adopted by even places that are not warri but close to warri, like an urhobo person from ekpan will tell u he is from warri, but ekpan isn't actually in warri, same as jeddo and other area even people in far off udu will claim that they are in warri everybody wants to associate with the name warri.
Ignorance is your problem, Warri of today is divided into Warri south west LGA ,Warri south and Warri North LGA.
Itsekiri is the only tribe in Delta State without a LGA of it own.
In Warri South West , we have the ijaws and itsekiri
Ijaws have 3 kingdoms Ogbe ijoh ,Asaba and gharamatu.

In Warri South we have ijaws urbobos and itsekiri areas and urbobos kingdoms okumagba , Agbassa ,among others , ogbe ijaws .

In Warri North we have ijaws and itsekiri ,egbama kingdom for ijaws .

The itsekiri monarch cannot transpasss to any urbobos or ijaws area , they were trying to claim others domain through that political title , he is Olu of itsekiri people and only have jurisdiction on itsekiri affairs , Olu Of Itsekiri, was changed by Awolowo's Western Nigeria government from Olu of Itsekiri' to Olu of Warri in 1952, which today is irrelevant as they know their boundary and cannot transpasss to any ijaws or urhobos areas .

If you need more history on Warri and how itsekiri people came to Delta State from Benin let me know ,cos itsekiri met ijaws and urbobos here. In fact it ijaws whom housed the itsekiri first Olu , a prince in Benin who ran from the Benin Kingdom over his actions .

Good day Nairalanders I'm Jay (psuedonym) by name and I need your candid advice please bear with me if my writeup is long.

Several thoughts have been running through my mind all day and I've been trying to get an answer within but none is forthcoming. Flash back to some few months ago there's this girl I met in school, she's sweet, lovely and she's got everything I want in a woman, we started talking and we got to know each other.

During one of our conversations she told me about a particular guy of the Aiye confraternity who has been hitting on her but she claimed its nothing to be worried about so I waved it aside.

Few months later she gave in and gave me a yes, precisely six weeks ago but on the 7th of this month (Sunday). She told me a friend of hers decided to take her out only to discover that its a gathering organised by some gang members to celebrate their annual anniversary (7/7).

She said she met some other gang members who has been hitting on her there, according to her claim she said nothing transpired between her and the members of the secret society but during the convo I got to know that apart from the other guy in Aiye there are also two other cult guys from different gang who are also after her.

I didnt take it as much of a big issue I just told her to be careful of friends and people she moves with. Sunday went by and today (Wednesday) after lectures while hanging around the school premises she showed me two other gang members who had approached her and who still holds an interest in her making it 4/5 or more cult guys who are hitting on her.

From that moment I wasn't at ease but she didn't seem bothered or disturbed like I do infact she was still getting cosy and all loved up with the PDA despite the fact that I was trying not to draw attention at that very moment.

When I got back to my hostel while thinking of what to do I remembered that two-three weeks before we started dating I had a nightmare in which some gang members were after my life.

I thought of the nightmare and the current circumstance I am and I can see some sort of relation I've been thinking whether to continue the relationship or end it even though its still young, fresh and filled with love.

Don't be a coward, no one had approach u about it, be calm and keep those cosy stuff in house , continue Ur thing .
Please Nairalanders I need your advice on this, thanks for your help.

slave is a very strong and deeply hateful word my friend atiku won in oyo state and ondo, this is why I wish you south south people would see the hypocrisy of the igbos are you aware this is the first time yorubas voted a fulani person infact nnamdi azikiwe is the first southerner to ally with the north in 1959 if you investigate properly igbos betrayed first is atiku not fulani
The west didn't betray PDP , atiku lost due to the north east and central not delivering. The problem why these kind of statement come in sometime is, we (Yoruba ,Ibo ,south south minority) share similar mindset, ideas, culture , religious. but the northerner keep using the west against other southerner, the only way the southern Nigeria can achieve true greatness is if we learn to accommodate ourselves. Don't take things personally bro sometimes we say things that seem hateful to defend ourselves when our ethnicity is been attack , doesn't mean we hate , I believe the Ibo and Yoruba should learn to love themselves so we can move southern Nigeria forward.

My broda the relationship between the ijaws and Igbo has more to do with common interest, ijaws feel oppressed and marginalized and same for the Igbos , so we kinda feel the need to support them for justice and equality. I feel if the Yoruba and Igbos get along it ll be good for the southern Nigerian to finally end the northern political dominance.
