NIGERIA EDUCATION ON THE EDGE OF A PRECIPICE For several years, education sector in Nigeria has been faced with numerous challenges bordering on low budgetary allocation and under funding. This is undoubtedly having a telling consequence on the sector’s quality of service and our collective development. The end to the problems seems not to be in sight as the stakeholders in the sector recently expressed dissatisfaction on the amount allocated to the sector in the 2017 budget, saying it was nothing compare to the enormous problems bedeviling the sector. A friend had once asked me what I intended to become in the nearest future and I didn’t hesitate before telling him I want to be an academic. He looked very confused and disappointed. Thinking aloud! How someone would choose to remain poor throughout his entire life? He boldly asked me, ‘don’t you think being an academic would make you a poor man? Well, I asked him to tell me if money guarantees happiness in life. Then the chapter closed. The hope is waning. Everything is in a shambles. The government is hell-bent on murdering the sector. In Nigeria of today, what the researchers are experiencing is not under funding but Zero funding. OYO! That awkward moment one has to wait indefinitely to get a scholarship or grant abroad before a research could be done, due to lack of necessary equipment in the country. To the Colleagues, Senior Colleagues and ‘Ogas’ conducting research abroad, be reminded that status quo still remain here. We are still using two buckets to improvise water pump, filter paper in place of extraction thimble. It may also interest you to know that we are still, in some cases, struggling to get ice to carry out ‘common’ condensation, while mouth pipetting has not gone into extinction in our labs. So, perhaps you may consider buying some apparatus and equipment from your hard-earned foreign stipend when coming to your motherland. If you deem it necessary to come back though. To think that Nigerians who are supposed to keep the government on their toes as regards educational matters are doing nothing to salvage the sector from total collapse baffles one to the bone. Some lecturers have not been paid their salaries and entitlements for over seven months let alone getting a research grant, yet it has never been the talk of the day on our dallies and or social media. Unfortunately, the youth who are supposedly the leaders of tomorrow have been engrossed in frivolities. They make news from the things that would not bring us any development. If it’s not ‘Jumoke the bread seller’ it would be ‘Linda vs wizkid’ or Tiwa’s marriage. What’s more appalling is the fact that students who bear the brunt of this unfair treatment the most are also guilty of this misplaced priority. They only rant incessantly when ASUU goes on strike. Do you know of any great Nation where leaders do not take educational matters seriously? Take it from me, the stark reality is that we can never have any meaningful progress until we get our acts together and give attention to the matters that matter. If we could engage the government to reverse the orchestrated data hike, then we can do better to pull our education back from the brink. |

;DAll of you bashing me, someone can not play with again? Is dis how u used to do? ;DAll of you bashing me, someone can not play with again? Is dis how u used to do ![]() But seriously, I'm not a PDP e-fighter. I do nt support any political party, but dis government should stop making promises without fulfillment. Why did they announce dec 1 wen they knew there might be hitches? APC e-warriors should tell their masters to stop playing Ludo with our emotions. |
slimfancier:Thanks jare my dear sister. Don't mind those abusing me upandan. Na today person dey get paid without work? In sanner climes, unemployed graduates are paid stipends until they're gainfully employed. Did u say I've not done any work? ok were u d one who paid for over #300 have spent on transport visiting cafe upandan? were u d one paying for my data subs to access npower pages to check updates? I've done more work than Buhari abeg! @slimfancier, is ur info from a reliable source pls? |
castel428:Nothing good has ever come out of this APC. When APC makes promise, never take them seriously, just know that one of the three thing below is likely to happen... They either deny d promise or cancel it or execute it on paper. |
Oscarz:Thanks for the info Mr Oscarz. Pls how can we get the phone numbers of the so call 'focal persons' so that we can beg them to act fast. |
PresVA:brother, do u know how it feels to be at home in dis period of recession? no work, no money. I must not lie to u bro, I've already drew plan on d npower stipend for December, hoping that they would engage us from December 1 as promised. These people would claim they profess to Islam or Christianity but careless about d implications of not fulfilling promises... Why is d present government hellbent on canceling all promises? bro either I want to get money without work or not, we just need an insider to confirm it so that we would know if we are on a long thing. |
Lakol:Thanks brother. I just hope it's not going to be d case of All Promises Canceled. |
Ever since FG informed us via the Npower's FB n twitter pages that npower programme would commence on December 1, d hope of getting December stipend by the selected volunteers was undoubtedly high. Today is 6th day of December and there's no clear evidence that selected unemployed graduate will start anytime soon. Personally, I think d FG does nt want to employ people to be in charge of npower stuff, they only want to use LG workers without paying them for d service and they are not ready to render free service. Some of d selected volunteers have visited their local govt with d hope of getting info on what next, only to be told by the LG staff that they have not received any directive from Ogas at d top, except in Kogi State where the governor had been reported to have done the flag off for d programme. NOW THE HOPE OF GETTING DECEMBER STIPEND SEEMS TO BE FADDING AWAY. Can someone who knows someone who knows someone at the helm of npower affairs confirm to us if December pay will grace d bank account of the volunteers. Afterall we've filled in our account details as required. thanks in anticipation. |
Enough of all dis creation of whatsapp group Jare. Don't u guys think dis page is suffice to help people wt info or to get info as d case may be. it's nt everybody that will b interested in joining whtsap groups upadan. som1 would say 'Oyo st npower, join dis whtsap group' .. another person would say 'Oluyole LG, join dis ..... another would still come n say 'if u live around new garage, join did...' some pipu have applied for more than 15 jobs via this forum, do u expect dem to b joining groups upandan in? n these groups will eventually become irrelevant n disturbance wen d purpose of it creation is over... a |

It's quite laughable when some people keep reminding us that some schools are Christian schools or r missionary schools. were u not told that missioners didn't come at money but bibles? For ur information d schools were built we our collective resources. so, stop laying unnecessary claim... A simple question to those that supported CAN's stand on did matter.....pls how does d wearing of Hijab by Muslim students affect lives of their christian counterparts, in what ways does it affect their learning process? what is d negative effect on d school? well, that's what happen when some people's brains have been sealed in a CAN. pl |
