bigfather:
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai on Monday evening stated that the Defence Headquarters did not declare the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB a terrorist organization in the country.

Speaking during the official launch of Operation Python Dance II in Abakaliki, the Army Chief who argued that what the Defence Headquarters did was a pronouncement on IPOB added that the statement of the military gave room for the right steps to be taken on the matter.

According to Buratai, the action of the Federal government concerning IPOB was right and that the military did not over step its bound towards the protection of lives and properties in the country.
It is not that we are overstepping our bounds. We are still within the limits. And I ensure you that what the military said was to set the ball rolling and to bring the awareness to the public that this is what this organization is all about. I’m happy that the government has done the right thing right now.” grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin This country is full of funny things. See what Buhari has reduced the military. So is Brutai telling us that what the whole media carried was a hoax? well Nigeria deserves what they get.

General Tukur Buratai further assured the people of the Southeast that the Army will abide by the rule of law and rules of engagement in carrying out the Exercise Egwu Eke II which kicked off on Saturday in the region.

Also during a courtesy to Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi state who was represented by his Deputy, Dr. Kelechi Igwe, the Chief of Army Staff noted that the exercise was targeted at improving the security situation of the zone which according to him, was very strategic to the security of the country.

According to him the exercise will help to bring about the much needed peace and security and also be used to train the Military in basic internal security.

“They army have taken into cognizance the security of the people in deployment of it’s personnel for the operation”.

He said the army in carrying out the operation will liaise and work with other security agencies in the region.

“The army is very sensitive to the cultural norms of the people and will abide by all the rules of engagement and code of conduct that have been laid down which is quite in tandem with the Constitution,” he said.

According to him, some of the activities of the exercise will include Patrols, indoor battle exercises, Civil-Military cooperation activities like medical outreach, sanitation, donation of books to schools etc.

He therefore appealed for understanding as it is just an exercise to help improve security of lives and property within the zone.

Governor Umahi promised that the people of the state will cooperate with the army throughout the duration of the exercise.

He noted that the first edition of the operation last year was peaceful and successful and urged the military to carry out the exercise with high sense of discipline that the Nigerian Military is known for.

He urged the Military to pay more attention to the state’s border with Cross River while carrying out the exercise which he said have been decimated by boundary clashes.

Nnamdi Kanu
Nwannekaenyi "Nnamdi" Kenny Okwu Kanu (born September 1967) is a British-Nigerian[3] political activist. He is a leading member of one of several Biafran separatist organizations[4], the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and the director of a London-based radio station Radio Biafra.[4] Kanu was arrested on treason charges in Lagos on 14 October, 2015 and was detained in a Nigerian jail without trial for more than a year-and-a-half, despite various court orders that ruled for his release. When in court, Kanu appeared regularly wearing a Jewish prayer shawl and head covering. He said in court that he "believes in Judaism" and considers himself a Jew.[5] On 28 April 2017 Kanu was released from prison on bail.[6]

Biography Edit

Early life Edit
Kanu was born in Isiama Afara, Abia State, Nigeria. His father is HRM Eze Israel Okwu Kanu (JP) and his mother is Ugoeze Nnenne Kanu.[1] He attended Library Avenue Primary School (now part of Government House, Umuahia) and went to Government College Umuahia for his secondary education. He later gained admission to the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) but left after two years. He moved to London and studied Political Economics at London Guildhall University now called London Metropolitan University (LMU).

Arrest Edit

On October 18, 2015, it was reported that Mr Kanu had been arrested in Lagos State by Nigeria’s secret police the Department of State Services (DSS).[7][8] Mr Kanu had told his solicitors that he was, on 14th October, 2015, arrested by the agents of the Federal Government of Nigeria, the State Security Service (SSS) in his hotel room i.e. Golden Tulip Essential Hotel Ikeja, Lagos State.[9] The solicitors in a press briefing said, between 14th and 17th October, 2015 their clients whereabouts were unknown until 18th of October, 2015, when the Press Media broke the news of his arrest and detention by the SSS in Abuja.[9] The news of the arrest of Mr Kanu generated protests across parts of Delta State, Enugu State, Rivers State, Cross River State, Abia State, Imo State, and Anambra State.[10]

Detention Edit

On October 19, 2015, it was reported that Mr Nnamdi Kanu had been granted bail[11] after a secret arraignment at Magistrate Court,Wuse 11.[12] However, the bail seemed "controversial" and there were claims the DSS announced the bail only "to calm the angry people of Biafra".[13] Although the bail conditions were stringent some of which required the Certificate of Occupancy of a landed property within Abuja municipality, a level 16 officer in the Ministry, Mr Kanu's lawyer said they eventually met the requirements in full. However, “upon the issuance of the Form 36,the court ordeal went to execute the order but came back unsuccessful. He was unable to produce the prisoner.[12] The lawyer, Vincent Obetta, called the continued detention of the activist despite meeting his bail conditions "a clash between judiciary and executive" in a democratic Nigeria. According to Mr Obetta, "I have not seen or heard any place where a court grants bail and the person is not released. Under UN and Africa charter, it is enshrined that once bail is granted, you release the person upon meeting the bail conditions. We are sliding to days of Decree 2 and 4 of 1984. This is pure Dictatorship.” [14]

A Conservative minister said the British consular officials will visit Mr Kanu following enquiry from the activist's constituency MP, Harriet Harman. James Duddridge, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs confirmed that Kanu, had been visited earlier by members of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office but that he did not ask for British consular assistance.[15]:

Court jurisdiction Edit
The Magistrate Court 1 sitting in Abuja on November 18, 2015 ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to produce Kanu, at the court on November 23, 2015.[16] However, it was reported the Department of State Services (DSS) obtained a "secret court order to detain Nnamdi Kanu.[17][18][19] Kanu's lawyer, Mr Obetta in an interview said whilst "in court, the prosecutor gave him a document containing a court order permitting the Department of State Services (DSS) to detain Mr Kanu for the next three months to "conclude what they said was an investigation of terrorism and terrorism financing".[20]

Charges and court trial Edit

Kanu was finally arraigned on November 23, 2015 in an Abuja Magistrate Court for the first time [21][22] for charges of "criminal conspiracy, intimidation and membership of an illegal organisation by Nigeria's Department of State Services (DSS). They charges violate "Section 97, 97B and 397" of Nigeria's penal code.[23][23][24] Chief Magistrate .S. Usman had at the last adjourned date, berated the Department of State Services (DSS) over its failure to produce Kanu in court on two consecutive times the matter came up before the court.[25] Meanwhile, Kanu's supporters, stormed Nigeria's capital city of Abuja in luxury buses on a peaceful protest for their leader who was arraigned by the Federal Government before the Wuse Zone 2 Magistrate Court, Abuja on November 23, 2015.[26][27][28] Pro-Biafra protesters with placards sang and danced outside the court premises whilst hearing proceeded. Protesters wore T-shirts and caps with inscriptions like “Biafra Now or Never”, “Buhari Release Kanu For Us”, “On Biafra We Stand”. More protests by IPOB members numbering over 15,000 grounded vehicular movements the southeastern key economic city of Onitsha concurrently. It was the same by over 20,000 protesters in Aba, Abia State on the same day.[25][28]

Kanu, through his counsel filed an application asking the federal authorities to transfer him from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) to prison. His lawyer, Obetta, insisted that transferring his client to prison would enable him have easy access to his legal team.[25]

Whilst in court, the Department of State Services (DSS) requested the Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrates’ Court, to discontinue the trial of Nnamdi Kanu under section 108(1) of administration of criminal justice act 2015.[29] Mr Idakwo further said the Department of State Services (DSS) had obtained an order from the Federal High Court, Abuja, dated November 10, to detain the accused in its custody for 90 days.[29] However, Kanu's lawyer, Mr Obetta objected the continued detention of his client. Obetta, prayed the court not to discontinue the case because the prosecution did not present any information from the Attorney-General of Nigeria Federation who had the authority to approve such. Obetta also told the court that "the DSS violated the order of the court which granted bail that was perfected but not granted, adding that the accused had been in Department of State Services (DSS) custody since he was arrested."[29] The court's magistrate, Mr Usman Shuaibu, after listening to both counsels, adjourned the matter until December 1, 2015 for ruling.[29]

Controversy Edit

On 5 September 2015, Nnamdi Kanu was a guest speaker at the World Igbo Congress which was held in Los Angeles, California, where he told his audience that "we need guns and we need bullets".[30] Kanu in an interview in June 2017 explained his comment, saying that he demanded for bullets and guns from a group of US-based Nigerians for self-defense against the incessant attacks on Igbos by Fulani herdsmen.[31]

On 20 October 2015, Vanguard announced that Kanu had been released on bail. However, media sources supporting the objectives of IPOB called the bail "controversial" and claimed the DSS announced the bail only "to calm the angry people of Biafra".[13]Kanu has finally been released on bail by justice Binta Nyako for health reasons.

Masterclass32:
Palpable fear gripped residents of Sokoto State as some youths, on Saturday, attacked Igbo traders in the state.

The incident, which visibly shook Igbo merchants on Bello Way and Emir Yahaya areas of Sokoto metropolis, forced other Igbo traders at nearby Sahara street to close down their shops and run for safety.

SUNDAY PUNCH learnt that armed youths, in their hundreds, set ablaze a building along Bello Way, where Igbo traders have shops.

One of the victims, identified as Chief Okafor, said, “My house was razed by some suspected arsonists.

“I got a call from my wife that some youths had invaded my house and set it ablaze. My family narrowly escaped the attacks.”

Another victim, William Emmanuel Usoh, told journalists that his Honda Civic car was torched by some unidentified youths along Emir Yahaya Road.

Usoh explained that the timely arrival of men of the Nigeria Civil Defence and Security Corps, however, prevented the youths from destroying more property in the area.

When contacted, the President- General of Igbo Community in Sokoto State, Charles Uwaga, confirmed the incident.

He said reports reaching him indicated that some of his members were attacked within the state capital.

“A member just called me that his house was razed. There were also cases of vandalised shops,” Uwaga said.

Reacting to the development, the state government urged all residents to go about their activities without fear of molestation.

The government stated that arrangements had been put in place to protect lives and property.

The spokesman for Governor Aminu Tambuwal, in a statement, said the unrest in other parts of the country, especially the South- East, would have no negative effect on residents of Sokoto.

He lauded the people of the state for being their brother’s keeper and urged them to engage in acts that will promote unity and understanding at all times.

Eastern governors are the people who have given army licence to kill their people. No protection what so ever to Igbos by their governors. that alone is terrorism and can jail him for life, jailing a leader of a group like IPOB who has become a threat to the society also means his group must henceforth cease to exist for life the safety of the nation
what you say is nothing but what you do. Ask the court

Your number one Citizen who swore to protect and abide the comstitution is the one not respecting court orders. But l have to tell you is that Buhari can not handle the problem he is creating in Nigeria.
