NOT too long after the University of Lagos (UNILAG) students protested the sudden death of one of their colleague who was eletrocuted, Oluchi Anekwe, the students yesterday staged another protest over the invasion of bedbugs in their halls of residence. The protest, which started in the early hours of Monday, saw the placard-carrying protesters displaying their tattered mattresses at the main gate and on the billboards located in the institution. The displayed mattresses were an eyesore and created a disgusting scene, while the fuming students blamed university management for not replacing the old mattresses as at when due. They also decried the unsanitary conditions of the hostel, which according to a 300-level student of Chemical Engineering, who preferred anonymity, should be regularly fumigated for students’ safety and overall wellbeing. The two exit gates of the university, which remained shut for several hours, caused a traffic gridlock in and out of the university. Giving an insight into the protest, a student who identified himself as Lanre Dairo, said the protest had started from Mariere hall and extended to other halls of residence before dawn. We received a report that at about 3am yesterday, a student woke in the middle of the night screaming due to the presence of over 100 bedbegs on his body. Agitated by this, students resorted to protest at that hour. I did not join because of the time, but some students did. “We have been battling bed bugs since the beginning of this session. We have been using ‘Sniper’ to try to get rid of them but the hazardous smell is only sending many of us to the hospital.” However, when The Guardian contacted the spokesperson of the university and Deputy Registrar (Information), Mr. Olagoke Oke, he said efforts are underway to change the mattresses before the students’ outrage. His words: “Normally, the mattresses are changed at the beginning of every session. It needs to be highlighted that plans are at advanced stage to replace the mattresses after fumigating the hostel at the end of the second semester examinations scheduled to commence in two weeks time. It is therefore surprising that a group of students will embark on this unruly act.” “This unwarranted and unruly act of a group of students is condemnable and should not be tolerated in a civilised community. Management has always responded positively to issues affecting welfare of staff and students and would no longer tolerate any situation that will lead to break down of law and order. Management urges students to always engage in dialogue as it is the most fruitful means of conflict resolution.” He also advised students to learn how to tidy their surroundings and maintain a healthy environment. All efforts to reach the students union president, Abiodun Martins was futile as his phone was switched off. The Olufon of Ifon, Oba Moruf Magbagbeola, has said some policemen in his domain are in the habit of divulging privileged information to cult groups tormenting residents of the community. The monarch said this in Osogbo on Monday, at a forum organised by the Police Community Relations Committee which had the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, the Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Mr. Kola Sodipo, and top traditional rulers in the state in attendance. He said, “I want complaints about the activities of some policemen who divulge privileged information given to them by informants. These policemen are former cult members when in school and anytime people give out information about cultists to them, they would inform the criminals and this is putting the lives of these concerned informants at risks. “This happened recently in Sagamu and also in my town. I want you to help us on this.” The monarch appealed to the IGP to ensure that the police authorities carry out thorough security checks on those to be recruited into the police to prevent cultists and their sympathisers from infiltrating the Police Force. The monarch also said the vigilante groups had no use, saying many of them had been frustrating the efforts of the police and some of them had become terrorists in their various communities. The Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran, said traditional rulers should be more involved in terms of security arrangements in their respective domains. Aromolaran said involving traditional rulers in security would complement efforts of security agencies, because traditional rulers know their subjects and their activities. The Timi of Ede, Oba Munirudeen Lawal, lauded the administration of Governor Rauf Aregbesola for supporting the police and other security agencies in the state in order to make the state safe. The IGP earlier disclosed that no fewer than 435 policemen had lost their lives in the process of providing security for lives and property in the country. He said the number of the policemen and logistics available to them were not enough to get the job done effectively. He solicited the assistance of states and local government areas to help the police to be more effective. He warned his men against illegal detention of suspects and extra-judicial killing, saying anyone involved would be prosecuted. He said, “That is why I am here today; to appeal to you our royal fathers because you are more connected to the people. “Community partnership is the panacea to effective internal security management. Policemen should not do anything to disrupt that cooperation we have with members of the public. “There are areas where we also seek your assistance. Part of these is even if it is a pack of pure water or gala, you can give to the police command. When the men deployed on the highways are thirsty, they will not have any reason to leave the road. ”http://www.punchng.com/news/policemen-divulge-information-to-cultists-monarch/ |

The All Progressives Congress on Monday ordered for a fresh governorship primary to select the party’s candidate for the November governorship election in the state. National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, said this at the end of the party’s National Working Committee meeting in Abuja on Monday. A former state governor and one of the aspirants, Timipre Sylva, had insisted that he won the primary conducted about a week ago, which was said to have ended in a fiasco, after some hoodlums invaded the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa, venue of the party election, conducted by the Governor Adams Oshiomhole-led electoral committee. Popular singer, Sean Tizzle, has denied claims by ace comedian, Basketmouth that he (Sean Tizzle) allegedly gave him a ridiculous price to perform at his upcoming show billed for October 4. Recall that the comedian had said that he helped Sean Tizzle secure contracts for three and had expected him to reciprocate when he called him for his own show. The comedian subsequently blacklisted the artiste from all his shows. Sean Tizzle whose career seems to have been stagnant for a while however said he has settled the issue with Basket mouth and maintained he was never aware of the matter until news broke. “Let’s be logical, if Basketmouth with what he has done for me should contact me for a show, I cannot give him a ridiculous price. I did not know anything and I learnt about it when the news broke. I was so shocked when I heard the news. It is true that he has supported my career and I really appreciate him for supporting my brand. We tried to reach out to him when the news broke but we could not get a hold of any of his management team. Rico, my manager, sent Basketmouth a Whatsapp message immediately the news broke. They talked about it and we are in good terms with Basketmouth because we have spoken about it and cleared it all out. We have a good relationship with him and we have sorted everything out,”he told Punch. Speaking further, he added;“It is cool that everything is out there. If Basketmouth has any issue with me, I would have expected that he would call me and speak with me. I see Basketmouth as an uncle. If he called anybody from my management team, there should be verification and if he did not like what they told him, he could have called me to inform me,”he told Punch. “Nobody contacted us to tell us that they wanted us to be at his show. Even if somebody contacted us, I would have thought that it should be directed towards me personally instead of going through my management team. If it happened, I would have expected that it would be resolved immediately without the news getting out to the public. It is something we could have resolved amicably. We were not contacted to perform at his show.” https://www.naij.com/565578-basket-mouth-lied-never-contacted-sean-tizzle.html |

Hoodlums, including commercial sex workers, have taken over the Delta State Women Affairs Skill Acquisition Centre, Asaba, leaving 40 sewing machines and 60 computers allegedly stolen. The skill acquisition centre built by the wife of the former governor of the state, Mrs. Nkoyo Ibori, in 1999 is at present, a shadow of itself. It is located behind the legislative quarters along Nnebisi Okpanam Road, Asaba, and has allegedly been harbouring all sorts of miscreants, including commercial sex workers, who during nightfall, have converted many of the rooms into sex slaughter slabs. Investigation revealed that armed hoodlums broke into the centre and allegedly carted away vital equipments. The state Police Commissioner, Alkali Baba Usman who confirmed the incident, said the hoodlums gained entrance into the centre while the security guards were asleep, adding that two of the guards have been arrested and are currently helping the police for further investigation. Reacting to the issue, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Shola Williams, expressed regret on the state of affairs at the centre, especially with the set of broken chairs and dirty environment. While describing the environment as a serious apology, the commissioner confirmed that the skill acquisition centre was an eyesore, saying, “The Centre is completely a mess and all the equipment have been stolen. No students can be admitted to learn any craft of their choice; it is completely in shambles.” Williams, however, assured that the state government would do something to bring the centre back to shape. http://www.punchng.com/news/sex-workers-hoodlums-take-over-delta-skill-centre/
