A lot has definitely changed about one of Africa’s finest pop groups, P-Square, made up of twin brothers, Peter and Paul Okoye Ever since the crisis in the family, during which the brothers were at loggerheads and threatened they would be going their separate ways, things haven’t been the same again. For one, the brothers seem to have stopped making music together. The last work they have together is their ‘Double Trouble’ album which was released in 2014. With the two-year gap that is usually between their album releases, P-Square is expected to release an album this year, but there are no indications that they have ‘hit’ the studio yet. In the past, the brothers (especially Peter) used to upload pictures on their social media pages to show fans that they are working in the studio. But nothing of the sort has happened this year. Yesterday, it made a big mistake that could cost investors a lot of money. “All new cars mandated to be electric in Germany by 2030,” the website headlined yesterday, announcing that “Germany is about to become the first major country to set an official deadline for a ban on gas-powered cars.” Should you have bought or sold shares on that news, quickly cancel the order. The newsflash is flat out wrong. It is pure fantasy that, as Electrek writes, “a senior government official in Germanyconfirmed they will impose a mandate for all new cars registered in the country to be emissions free by 2030. The mandate will be part of Germany’s pledge to cut carbon dioxide output by 80% to 95% by 2050.” Let’s retrace the baloney’s gestation. Electrek apparently has the alleged news from Toronto’s Globe and Mail, which used aBloomberg piece, albeit with a catchier headline: “All cars in Germany must be emissions free by 2030, official says.” Also not true. The paper was led astray by Bloomberg, which somewhat correctly, but apparently confusingly wrote that “all new cars registered in Germany need to be emissions free by 2030 at the latest to help meet pollution reduction goals, a senior government official said.” So what did really happen? The official is Rainer Baake. He is not Germany’s “Deputy Economy Minister,” as Bloomberg erroneously writes, he is a public servant, State Secretary of Germany’s Ministry of Economy and Energy. In Germany, that ministry has no jurisdiction over cars. In Germany, Baake’s nickname is “Mister Energiewende,” the man in charge of the country’s energy pivot away from fossil FOSL +0.28% fuel and nuclear towards alternative, renewable energy such as solar, or wind. Baake is a reputable and feared environmental technocrat. For six years, he served as head of the environmental pressure group Deutsche Umwelthilfe, the same group that is Enemy Number One of Europe’s auto industry which reels under DUH’s relentless dieselgate attacks. Rainer Baake also is a member of the Green Party. At a Berlin investment confab, organized by the Tagesspiegel newspaper, Baake was a speaker. Germany’s target is to lower CO2 emissions by 95% by 2050. At the meeting, Baake raised doubts that the target will be met. “There’s been no reduction at all in CO2 emissions by transport since 1990,” Baake noted, saying that since cars typically have a 20-year lifespan, registrations of new diesel and gasoline cars would have to be cut over the next 15 years to get anywhere near the 2050 target. Baake voiced a personal opinion, that’s all. In reality, to get anywhere near the 2050 CO2 reduction goals, Germany’s plans to have 6 million EVs on its roads by 2030. That would be 10% of the currently 61.5 million vehicles, and it is a tall order. Despite a new EUR 4.000 incentive, Germany’s Environment Ministry projects that EV sales will only reach 500.000 electric cars by 2020. [b]Recently at an event in Germany, officials from Mercedes-Benz announced plans to introduce the GLC F-Cell in 2017. This is a version of the compact GLC SUV with a fuel-cell, plug-in hybrid drivetrain. As so often happens, this got my mind working along multiple tangents and connecting dots with Apple AAPL +0.42% and Ford that may or may not deserve to be connected. Please join my thought process. The GLC F-Cell propulsion system is all electric, but doesn’t derive its electrons entirely from the grid. The electric motor at the rear axle gets current from a combination of a 9-kilowatt-hour lithium ion battery and a hydrogen fuel cell. This certainly isn’t the first vehicle we’ve seen with this sort of architecture but it may well be the first to get to production. The most recent example appeared in November 2014 in the form of theAudi A7 h-tron. Audi A7 h-tron concept The A7’s battery had an 8.8-kWh capacity and two motors, one at each axle but in principle the concept was the same. However, Audi also wasn’t the first. To the best of my knowledge, Ford actually deserves credit or at least they are the first that I’m aware of. Back in January 2007, on the same day that General Motors GM +0.55% unveiled the original Chevrolet Volt concept at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Ford showed a concept van called the Airstream. The polished aluminum-bodied Airstream was at least on paper powered by a plug-in hybrid fuel cell powertrain dubbed HySeries Drive. Like most concept vehicles including the Volt that was across the floor in Cobo Hall, the actual hardware in the vehicle bore no resemblance to the specs on the press release. Comedian, actor, Kevin Hart reportedly lost $500, 000 worth of personal items when burglars broke into his house in Los Angeles at the weekend. According to the Police, the comedian was robbed of approximately half a million dollars’ worth of clothes, jewelry, watches and other personal items in the home robbery. The burglars most likely broke in through the backdoor, according to the police, and no one was at home during the robbery, People reports. The police also say the home has surveillance cameras inside and out, and the footage is currently under investigation for possible leads. The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has disclosed that the Federal Government was quietly working towards bringing an end to the persistent Fulani herdsmen/farmers crises across the country. Mohammed made the disclosure on Sunday during a special prayer for the stability of the nation by an Islamic group, Saadatul Abadiyyah Organisation of Nigeria in Abeokuta, the Ogun State Capital. According to Mohammed, President Muhammadu Buhari had also constituted a panel of inquiry to look into the recent alleged Fulani attacks, adding that Nigerians would soon feel the effects of the silent efforts being made by the government. Mohammed said, “the President did speak immediately these things happened, to the extent of setting up a panel of enquiry. But the government is going to do more than that. “These communal clashes are very delicate issues, very emotional and what the government is doing is working very silently to ensure that people who used to live together before without any conflict will go back to that. The affected vehicles represent just a fraction of the number of cars that will need to have their driver and front-passenger airbags repaired. As many as 69 million of the safety devices, manufactured by Japan’s Takata Corp., are being recalled because the airbag inflator can explode with too much force and spray metal shrapnel at passengers. So far, at least 13 deaths and more than 100 injuries worldwide have been linked to the defect. On May 4, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration dramatically expanded its recall of Takata-made inflators, adding as many as 40 million airbags to the 29 million that had already been recalled.
