Autos2016 Mercedes-benz C350e Soothes Range Anxiety by baress(op): 8:53pm On Nov 09, 2016
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz C350e plug-in hybrid sedan is not a Tesla fighter. It’s not even much of a Chevy Volt fighter. It is a very comfortable, very refined plug-in-hybrid mid-range Mercedes. So if that’s your jam, this is your car.

The C350e has a 2-liter gasoline engine and a 60-kW electric motor, for a combined 275 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, which means quick merging on the freeway. Mercedes is estimating fuel economy to be about 100 mpg, based on European ratings, but there’s no official word from the EPA here in the states yet, where the testing is tougher and the numbers are likely to be lower.

If you want to dip a toe in EV ownership despite your range anxiety, the Mercedes does travel up to 20 miles on electric power only, depending on how you drive. Mash the accelerator, and you’ll drain the battery quickly. The engine will kick in then, and it will run in a more conventional hybrid mode.

The battery fully charges in 2.5 hours at a 240-volt outlet, but it takes 8-plus hours at a regular 120-volt household plug. That’s pretty typical for an electric car, but Mercedes chose to put the plug at the back of the car. That means you either have to back into the garage or parking space or hope that the public charging station has a long enough cord to reach. You can also get quite a bit of energy back from the regen braking system.

Autos2017 Lincoln Continental: A Full-fledged Luxury Car Worthy Of The Classic Name by baress(op): 10:59pm On Nov 06, 2016
It’s a tough time to be a luxury sedan. According to market tracking at Kelley Blue Book luxury sedan sales are down more than 13% this year while every luxury SUV category is up. In Lincoln’s favor, the brand’s sales are increasing, up almost 9 percent this year on the success of the MKC and MKX utility vehicles. So the question is, how much will the all-new 2017 Lincoln Continental contribute to Lincoln’s turnaround momentum?

Autos2016 Mazda CX-9: Family, Function And Fun – All In One by baress(op): 10:29pm On Nov 06, 2016
The most emotionally captivating 3-row SUV on the market.” That was the goal for the all-new 2016 Mazda CX-9. As the last model to transition from Mazda’s previous, Ford-tied era to the brand’s current vehicle philosophy, the CX-9 now fully embraces Mazda’s “Kodo” exterior design language and SkyActiv drivetrain technology. Mazda reps told us the new CX-9 represents a better balance between the functional aspects of a family car and the personal expressiveness that comes from emotional and indulgent cars (such as the brand’s own MX-5). Mazda is also making a concerted effort to position the CX-9 as a luxury SUV, with premium styling, features and materials, but without the luxury pricing. It’s a smart play given the increased struggle we’ve seen luxury brands face at Kelley Blue Book in recent months.

AutosFeds Reject Consumer Group’s Request To Recall 850,000 Nissans With Transmission by baress(op): 11:39pm On Nov 03, 2016
Federal safety regulators have rejected a consumer group’s request that about 850,000 model year 2005 – 10 Nissan Pathfinder, Frontier and Xterra models be recalled because the automatic transmission has a mechanical problem that can cause a vehicle to lose speed or stall.

In rejecting the request from the North Carolina Consumers Council, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that there is clearly a mechanical problem with the transmission: a defective transmission oil cooler that can allow engine coolant to get into the transmission.

However, in its summary report the agency said proving a safety problem would be such a challenge that “there is no reasonable possibility” of a recall and further use of the agency’s resources cannot be justified.

“We find that notion to be incredibly misguided and irresponsible,” said Matthew Oliver, the executive director of the council, which requested the investigation in 2012.

“Apparently, N.H.T.S.A. does not feel that more than nearly 640 documented consumer complaints directly related to a potential vehicle safety hazard should be a priority or are worth an investment of agency resources,” said Mr. Oliver.

The agency has 638 complaints citing “potential hazards,” with owners saying their vehicles stalled or lost power when they needed to accelerate.

“I was driving on Route 62 near home and was very fortunate not being T-boned as I pulled out. My Pathfinder didn’t go like it was supposed to. Fortunately the oncoming vehicle stopped,” an owner from Wisconsin wrote in 2011.

There were reports of four minor accidents, but no injuries. The safety agency said in three of those accidents the owner had problems with the transmission previously, but did not fix it.

In its report the agency said it had almost 1,900 other complaints from owners, typically citing “customer satisfaction issues.” Those included “shudder and shake,” the cost of the repair (typically $4,000 to $7,000) and the lack of help they received from Nissan.

In some cases the cost of that repair was half of what the vehicle was worth, the agency said.

Many of vehicles about which the owners complained had at least 90,000 miles.

The agency’s investigation included reviewing owner complaints, interviewing some owners, examining and driving vehicles and having its defect investigation group in Ohio test the components.

The agency said the transmission failures were typically preceded by poor shifting or shuddering that provide a warning of a problem. But many owners were not aware such symptoms could lead to a loss of power or stalling or they could not afford the repair.

The agency said there have been recalls for stalling and loss of power, but typically those involved a sudden and total loss of power without any warning, often accompanied by the loss of power assist to the steering and brakes.

And that has not been the case with the Nissans, the agency said.

Many of the owners complained that Nissan refused to stand behind its product.

In 2010 the automaker extended the warranty on the radiator – the component involved in the leak that ruined the transmission – to eight years or 80,000 miles from the time the vehicle was new.

But the warranty notice for owners did not specifically say that the automaker would repair a transmission damaged by the radiator failure, an omission that prompted scorn from consumer advocates.

At the time a Nissan spokesman told The New York Times that the transmission was covered, even thought that was not stated. He said the automaker was trying “to be informative and concise without getting too deep into the details.”

But the recent N.H.T.S.A. report said some owners complained that Nissan nevertheless refused to pay for transmission repair or replacement. Other owners said the warranty should be longer.

In 2012, Nissan settled a class-action suit over the transmissions and extended that warranty to 100,000 miles or 10 years from the time the vehicle was new. That specifically mentioned a transmission repair, but the owner had to pay as much as $3,000.

Meanwhile Mr. Oliver, the head of the North Carolina Consumers Council, said his group recommends consumers not buy the 2005 – 10 Nissan Pathfinder, Frontier and Xterra.

Autos2018 Volkswagen Atlas: Forging Forth In A Post-dieselgate Future by baress(op): 10:28pm On Oct 28, 2016
Volkswagen unveiled its latest and greatest post-Dieselgate hope, the Atlas mid-size SUV, last night on the shores of Santa Monica, California. Its importance to the beleaguered automaker cannot be overstated as theaptly named SUV indeed carries the weight of Volkswagen’s hopes and burdens on its chiseled shoulders.

The Atlas is a product specifically engineered for North America, and it will be built in the U.S. at Volkswagen’s still-fresh plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It is sized and packaged to compete head to head with the heart of the three-row mid-size crossover market, one of the most important vehicle segments in North America today. The Atlas has a competitive engine range consisting of a turbocharged 2.0L DOHC 16v inline four producing 238 hp and a 3.6L DOHC 24v V6 with 280 hp. Both are paired to an eight-speed automatic and have front wheel drive as standard and 4MOTION all wheel drive optional.

AutosAuto Industry Cranks Up For More Electric Cars As Hybrids Edge Batteries by baress(op): 11:55pm On Oct 20, 2016
The auto industry has convinced itself it needs to produce more electric vehicles, but there’s one more decision to make – should it go for battery only, or plug-in hybrid.

At the moment, the future looks to be with plug-in hybrids, with battery-only less favored. Meanwhile Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk is adamant it has to be pure electric. A plug-in hybrid is a mere interim solution on the way to an all electric future, Musk says.

The weight of evidence currently available suggests Musk is wrong. Admittedly, this “evidence” is really subjective, but it comes from reliable corporate players.

According to Schaeffler Technologies AG & Co of Germany, a big privately owned major supplier of components for the automotive and aerospace industries, by 2030 about 38% of global vehicles will be hybrids of one kind or another, while pure electric vehicles (EVs) will account for just 10%. That still leaves just over 50% powered by traditional internal combustion engines (ICE).

Autos2016 BMW 650i – Touring In The Grand Style by baress(op): 9:16am On Oct 14, 2016
It’s been a quarter century since I drove a BMW for the first time. After years of reading Car and Driver’s praise of the 3 and 5 Series, my entre into the brand came via the big coupe which in those days was the 850i. The 8 series had supplanted the 6 series while moving significantly upmarket. The 8 was only produced for a single generation before giving way to an eventual revival of the 6 which I finally had a chance to drive recently in 650i form.

Like most of the classic BMWs of the 1970s and 1980s, the first-generation 6 series was powered by inline six-cylinder engines of varying displacement and power including the legendary M6. When the 8 series debuted in 1990, it was instead powered exclusively by the same V12 engine used in the flagship 750i. Later variants were also offered with V8 engines but the 12s ultimately accounted for more than two-thirds of total production. The revived 6 brought back inline sixes along with new V8s and even a V10-powered M6. Rumors have swirled that BMW is planning to revive the 8 Series once again in the next few years while also retaining a new generation of the 6.

The current-generation 6 Series, known internally by its F13 designation has been with us for five years and just got a mild refresh last year. Like most cars over the past several decades, succeeding generations of BMW coupes have grown ever larger. At 192.7-inches bumper to bumper, today’s 650i is 4.5-inches longer than the 850i I drove all those years ago while the axles have almost 7-inches more in between.

The 850i was a prime example of the late-1980s design ethos with decidedly wedge shape for a BMW and it was one of the few examples of the brand with pop-up headlamps. In many respects, it shared more with the legendary M1 than any other production BMW. In contrast, the 650i looks far more like a member of the contemporary family, albeit with a decidedly sleeker form than its sedan siblings. At 53.9-inches tall, the 650i is lower than its competition from Stuttgart.

AutosHonda’s All-new CR-V: Poised For Success In A Cooling Market by baress(op): 11:33pm On Oct 13, 2016
The compact utility vehicle segment is one of the most popular segments in the United States and Honda, one of the automakers who really kicked off this segment, is back with a fifth-generation CR-V. As we head into 2017 and an expectation for the United States market to see sales stabilize rather than grow, look for competitive pressure in the compact utility vehicle segment to intensify, and Honda will be well-positioned with an all-new, popular product. From my first impressions, Honda will hit the market with a compelling, if conservative, offering. The CR-V is now Honda’s second-best-selling product and the fifth-generation is poised to continue this success.

AutosFor $400, Toyota’s Teeny Robot Is Your Co-pilot And Surrogate Baby - VIDEO by baress(op): 8:52pm On Oct 09, 2016
According to Toyota, a personable if wobbly little robot in your car’s cup holder is just the thing for long, lonely drives and for empty nests, too.

Like its larger predecessor, the Kirobo Mini (after the Japanese word for “hope”) is an autonomous and human-interfacing robot that’s designed to be at least at lovable as it is capable–or, in Mini’s case, to sacrifice the appearance of the latter for the former. The company announced this week that the almost four-inch “communication companion,” created as part of the Toyota Heart Project, represents another step toward “[its] vision of a future where humans and artificial intelligence work together for a better world.”

AutosTesla Confirms–and Ends–discounts, But Why Were They Offered In The First Place? by baress(op): 8:36pm On Oct 08, 2016
In an email sent to all employees, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has confirmed what some customers have been saying online for months; that the company was offering discounts on some new Tesla vehicles despite company policy that all customers pay 100% of the advertised retail price.

This discovery began when a customer posted on Reddit his dilemma: Tesla couldn’t deliver the P90 he purchased until the following week, but the salesperson wanted him to pay for the vehicle in full prior to delivery, or else he wouldn’t honor the discount they negotiated. The thread was shared with Musk on TwitterTWTR -0.10%, who responded immediately that the company never discounts.

AutosRe: 2017 Infiniti QX30 Test Drive And Review: Collaborative Crossover by baress(op): 9:17pm On Oct 06, 2016
YES YOU ARE RIGHT BRO
Autos2017 Infiniti QX30 Test Drive And Review: Collaborative Crossover by baress(op): 9:03pm On Oct 06, 2016
You’ve probably noticed that the roads are clogged with compact SUVs, many of them from premium brands. That’s because the compact (or “B-segment,” in auto marketing terms) premium crossover vehicle class has been very hot, with more and more manufacturers jumping into the frying pan all the time. The 2017 Infiniti QX30 represents one of the latest entries, and it’s the smallest, most affordable Infiniti crossover yet.

The QX30 rides on an all-new platform for Infiniti, one that was jointly developed between parent company Renault-Nissan and Daimler AG – Mercedes-Benz’s parent company, under a partnership that was announced a few years ago. The same platform also forms the basis for Mercedes-Benz’s GLA-class crossover. The basic body structure and dimensions, along with the same powertrain and transmission and a few shared technologies and parts, are held in common between the two vehicles. Infiniti’s designers sculpted the exterior for the QX30, while Mercedes-Benz’s design team handled the GLA, and they don’t share body parts. Some of the interior components are shared, like switchgear and other interface points, but the surfaces, colors and design elements are unique in each brand’s vehicle. Infiniti insists that its transmission, throttle, steering and suspension tuning are the product of Infiniti engineering, and Mercedes-Benz claims the same for the GLA.

AutosHenrik Fisker’s First Electric Car Company Failed But He’s Plotting A Comeback by baress(op): 8:52pm On Oct 06, 2016
The last time Henrik Fisker talked of reinventing the auto industry, Detroit’s carmakers were in bankruptcy and it seemed like a perfect time to launch a new venture, with the federal government dangling $25 billion in incentives for manufacturers to build greener, more efficient vehicles.

His goal was to create a “fabless car company” that would focus only on design and marketing, while buying parts from other carmakers and outsourcing the assembly work. His first product, the Fisker Karma, was a sexy $100,000 plug-in hybrid sports car built in Finland, but he hoped to launch production of a second, more affordable car at a shuttered General Motors factory in Delaware.

But Fisker Automotive went bankrupt after drawing $193 million of a $529 million loan from the Department of Energy. It was eventually sold to a Chinese manufacturer, saddling taxpayers with a $139 million loss.

Now, according to a fascinating interview with Bloomberg’s Hannah Elliott (a former Forbes writer), Fisker says he is starting a namesake car company again.

The Danish designer isn’t providing many details, but says he’s been working for the past couple years in “stealth mode” on the project, which uses a new lithium battery technology developed by some professors at UCLA. His aim is to deliver an electric car with a range in excess of 400 miles; images will come in mid-2017, according to Bloomberg. It’s not clear where the money is coming from.

The charismatic Fisker is not lacking for confidence. We’ll have to wait and see. Meanwhile, he’s still working on design and product strategy at VLF Automotive, another start-up car company he founded with Bob Lutz and Gilbert Villarreal in January 2016.

AutosSeptember Auto Sales Down A Bit, But The Industry Can Afford It by baress(op): 10:49pm On Sep 28, 2016
Bulk sales to fleets and a record level of discounting have softened the blow, but underperforming retail demand is catching up with U.S. auto sales this month.

Forecasters expect a modest decline in sales for the month of September — say, down less than 1 percent. That should put year-to-date sales roughly dead even or possibly slightly lower than a year ago. U.S. automakers will report September sales on Monday, Oct. 3, according to Autodata Corp.

At the end of 2015, most analysts expected another record year for U.S. auto sales. That could still happen, but it’s looking less and less likely unless automakers really go all-out in terms of incentives — more than they have already.

AutosVroom: Auto Company Valvoline Raises $660 Million In IPO by baress(op): 1:36pm On Sep 25, 2016
It’s not the sexiest of businesses but Valvoline, which operates oil change centers across the U.S., just went public in one of the year’s biggest IPOs.

The auto maintenance company raised $660 million in its public debut on Friday, which shares rising 10% to $24.10 at the beginning of trading. Valvoline had priced 30 million shares at $22 apiece on Thursday evening, which was within the expected range of $20 to $23 announced last week.

Valvoline was founded in 1866 and runs the second-largest quick lube operation in the country with over 1,000 locations. It also sells car motor oils and other automotive lubricant products at stores like AutoZone AZO -0.45% andAdvance Auto Parts AAP +0.06%.

In 2015, the company made $196 million in profits on revenue of $2 billion, and expects to pay shareholders a dividend after the IPO.

Valvoline’s listing comes during an impossibly slow year for IPOs. Only some 68 companies have sought the public markets this year, according to Dealogic, compared to 138 companies that had gone public this time last year. Things have started to heat up a bit since Labor Day, though. Cosmetics company E.l.f Beauty raised $142 million in a public offering this week, with shares surging 56% during the first day of trading.

AutosToyota’s Highlander Hybrid A Road-trip Beauty For All Seasons by baress(op): 11:02pm On Sep 22, 2016
There are times when a car is so reliably bland in its curb appeal that we take it for granted, even ignore it, though we privately admire how rock steady it is year after year. Meet the Toyota Highlander, which is quite possibly the best road-trip car you will find for a family without resorting to the dreaded (for many) “M” word. Minivan.
The Highlander debuted in the U.S. in early 2001, just when the U.S. was reeling from its first genuinely contested Presidential election in forty years. So, its arrival, before George W. Bush was sworn in, was somewhat overshadowed. It became the first mid-sized crossover based on a car platform. That doesn’t sound like a big deal now, but in 2001 truck-based SUVs were under a cloud of suspicion for safety reasons after the giant Ford Explorer recall involving exploding tires and the assertions that SUV adapted from truck chassis were inherently more prone to rollover than passenger cars or unibody-based SUVs.
This Fall, Toyota will introduce a substantially refreshed Highlander. But before we put that one through the paces, I was offered a test of the outgoing 2016 Highlander Hybrid. And put it through the road paces we did, driving this kid and dog hauler from Michigan to the Outer Banks of North Carolina and back. So close to the new Highlander debuting in dealerships, I felt like the outgoing Highlander Hybrid was an aging actor coming back to play the lead in one last performance before the show he originated closes –just to show he’s still got chops.
