Guys, do not be deceived. Ranking is everything in Academia. Universities and colleges get funding because of their ranking - which is judged based on scientific/technological equipments, library resources and quality of staff and students' research. That is why highly ranked universities (Harvard, Utrecht, Toronto, SFU, Oxford, Ottawa, etc) are highly competitive. They seek for the best minds to keep and/or grow their ranking. Top universities like Ottawa and co do not admit mediocre minds, even if there are a thousand institutions in their locality. That said, Ottawa cannot be compared to Memorial. Ottawa ranks 12 in Canada and top 300 in the world, while memorial ranks 24 in Canada and top 500 in the world. (See http://www.webometrics.info/en/North_america/Canada). Furthermore, tuition fees often depend on the amount of funding a department or program receives. Departments with focus in Social Healthcare research like disability studies, aging studies/gerontology, etc are currently receiving lots of funding so postgrad research programs in these are "cheap". Memorial is "cheap" - $800-1,300 a term for postgrad programs because they're a research focused Uni and receive lots of findings for research. Be wise in your assessments of foreign universities. Do not underestimate any program or school. Bless! |

Hi. Sorry, I know next to nothing about Sunderland. Best wishes. |
Good morning. I'm in a giving back mood today. This forum has helped in my journeys to study abroad. Thank you, Nairaland. Tips for those coming to UK and intending to work part time, you must do the following: 1. Call the National insurance service and request NI application forms , fill said forms and get them back to NI ASAP. They might call you and ask why you need it. Keep it simple and straight. Without NI number, getting a job is nigh impossible, as employers need that number to deduct income tax and national insurance contributions. You don't pay income tax for your first £11,000, though. 2. Get a bank acc with Lloyds or Barclays. Their requirements are less stringent and they're international students friendly. To do so visit the website of the bank you desire and fill the form for opening a classic acc, then visit the bank the next day with your identity docs, including Uni introduction, and proof of address. Without NI number and bank acc, you can't get a job. I hope this helps someone. Shalom. |
ATERI:Wrong! I'm student of Utrecht Uni, The Netherlands. Currently on study abroad to UK. Graduating in a couple of months. Getting an office job is possible without learning Dutch (I will advise that y'all learn it though). And the new rules regarding post study work make it easy for students to stay behind and contribute to the Dutch work force. Search Zoekjaar on Google for guidelines. |
debopopson:You can only apply for visa to another country from a country whose (permanent or temporary) residence permit you hold. You cannot apply from the UK if you hold a visitor visa. Best wishes. |
Teehp:[quote Hi. Sorry you had to go through that stress. You can look into studying in Denmark or The Netherlands. Both countries visa processes are straightforward and chances are high so long as you cross all T's and dot all i's. They also have programs for international students to stay and work after graduation. Fees are reasonable at some - if not most - of their institutions. I attended Utrecht University, Netherlands and I loved it. Downside is you can't work while studying. It is impossible to get student work permit as companies have to fill forms a mile long so they choose not to. You also look into Scotland. Presently the country is clamoring for UK govt. to bring back post study work visa international graduates of Scottish institutions. Chances are the Scots with get their wish soon. I wish you the best. Good luck. |
Boy! Am I happy that your "blunt"negativity was wrong! Visa granted within 4 days. Lesson: don't be hasty in arriving at negative conclusions. spikesC: |
Hello all. I got the visa. All is in order. Thank you, Justwise for the tips and encouragement. Bless! |

LOL...I've heard a lot of negatives about the town, but I'm excited still. Living in NL has been super fun but getting a legit part-time/studenty job is IMPOSSIBLE! Sooooo many rules! justwise: |
Okay. Thanks Justwise. I'll stay positive. ![]() justwise: |
BTW, I'm headed to Hull. Is anybody in the Yorkshire region? |
Hello all. I'm an ardent fan of this website and of Justwise's but I often follow the discussions mutely. Anyways...Please, I'm a bit confused. I applied for Tier IV visa (a bit late) on 29/09/2015, attended my biometrics appointment on 12/10/2015, the docs arrived the UK on 13/10/2015 and when asked in my application form when I want to be in the UK I answered 16/10/2015, because the deadline for my uni's registration is 19/10/2015. Today I got an email TLSContact that my passport and docs are on their way to me, but nothing was said about a decision being made and the track your application page doesn't indicate whether or not a decision was made. Is this normal? Should I be worried? The docs will most likely be here (I'm writing from Netherlands) by tomorrow but my heart is pumping that something might be wrong. |
Hello guys! I'm in Netherlands now, arrived 10days ago. Thanks so much for ALL the tips. Here is my journey, experiences and tips/advice: I will advise that you legalize your birth certificate and non-marriage certificate before coming to Accra; this I did at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for N1,000 a page. For appointments at the Embassy, you don't need one if you're there to collect your visa. You only need to be there before 8AM; they're really strict about that, I flew from Lagos to Accra with Medview (costs N18,000 and was a very short flight of 20+ minutes), got to the Embassy by 8:25AM and was ejected. The visa collection is a two-stage thingy. Stage one, you drop your international passport, passport photos taken at Osu and documents and they give you an appointment for a day to come pick them up. Usually takes two days, so it's best you go on a Monday or Tuesday, so that by Thursday you have your visa, that way you don't spend a lot of days waiting to collect your visa. Accra is really cheap so if you don't know anybody don't worry, you can pay for a hotel room for as low as N2,800; for this I recommend Frankie's Bar and Hotel at Nima, by Nima Police Station. Taxis are cheap as well, so don't worry about that, but try and haggle the price or you will be cheated frequently. Another advice: use the ATM's owned by Zenith, Ecobank or you will be charged exorbitantly for withdrawals. I can't seem to think of anything else but if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me. Best! |
Hi Mario. Please what documents did you go to Accra with? Did you legalize the documents at any Ministry? I'm asking becuase I live in Enugu and I plan on leaving for Lagos this evening. And it will catastrophic to get to Lagos and have to go back to Abuja because of legalization. Biko, my brain is just tired. Kindly help me out with specifics. Bless! marioxbenita50: Is unfortunate that this thread is moving backwards, anyway please houz I need an advice on hw to process my documents in ghana. The IND has approved my visa so I have to summit my application in ghana next week. my question is how many days will it take them 2 access my documents b4 stamping my passport? Secondly, will they interview me based on the whole stuff, and will I have 2 pay for the MVV visa...lastly I dnt have anybody in ghana... |
Thanks guys! I am happy... Please, what documents do I go with? The embassy said I should come with legalized birth and non-marriage certificates? What does that mean, please? I am at sea!! pdesmond1: I'm happy for you. Welkom to Dutch land. |
Hi everybody! I've heard from Utrecht University. I'm to pick up my MVV in Accra. Glory to God! |
Okay. Thanks. But, please, how long did it take from when your submitted the application to when IND approved said application. It's been three weeks and I haven't heard anything. Kinda worried! adeogunoga: in my own case when i went to their embassy in Accra i submitted my application on Monday and i get my visa on Wednesday if the school have you to go to Ghana you will have to write to the embassy in ghana first to make and appointment they may tell you to come in any working days |
Hi All. Please, I hate to be a bother but I am freaking out! I need guidance, abeg! My school - Utrecht University ie the no. 1 university in Netherland, 13 in Europe, 52 in the world - submitted my application for MVV and Residence Permit on 27th of August (had glitches in transferring the visa fees, hence the lateness), school has started and I've been having classes through Skype (it's not so bad! It's just that when there is a discussion going on, it's super hard to trace the voices and follow the conversation). I haven't heard from the IND and the school's staff said she isnt sure of when the visa will be out.I was wondering how long it takes: from submission of the application to visa approval to stamping by the Embassy at Accra. Please, save me hypertension and share your timelines please. Bless! |
