Please someone on this forum advised I shouldnt use Form A because it will waste time, as september is very close. I was banking on using Diamond Bank before @ 417 Naira, but the person said that Diamond Bank hasen't approved any Form A since August 4th.

Please what do you think I should do? I dont want to pay my remaining tuition @ 507 to £1. Please help me.

I went to Diamond Bank today to inquire about using Form A to pay my tuition.
I was told I will incur the following expenses:

1. 1% + 5% VAT of Naira equivalent.

2. $25 CBN charge

3. 5000 Naira Telex charge

Please did anyone experienced this?
Is this how its done? These charges are high. I might have to look for an alternative.

Same thing happened to me, so I had to pay for accommodation. I paid 1265 pounds cos that's the maximum amount that can be deducted from the maintenance fund so don't pay more. I am going to London though but I think it's less outside London.

Please

1. Can I use Form A to pay for my accomodation?

2. Can I use Form A to receive my upkeep and living expenses when I get to UK & open a UK account?

Okay Krusha, what I am about to tell you, I wish somebody told me on time. Just stay away from stanbic for form A and use Diamond Bank. I applied for form A at stanbic when the exchange rate was N372 to 1GBP, but they delayed me for over 2 weeks, then I learnt Diamond bank was fast, so I opened account with Diamond bank on a monday (they told me the form A would take a maximum of 2 weeks), I was very scared and afraid to wait 2weeks (This was when CBN rate was going BANANNAS and I was running out of time for my SOA), So the same day, I started using the Gt bank card of everybody I knew (including strangers) and I paid £6,500 at the rate of N463 - N467 to £1 ( lol I noticed the xchange rate was going up everyday) and another £1,250 at the rate of N494 to £1. Diamond bank called me on thursday (3 days after) that CBN has approved the form A at a rate N417 to £1 but my account is not funded for the transaction, and if they do not see funds in the account by 9:30am that same day. I would need to wait till the next week when they will be dealing again. SO sad, I almost cried because I had already paid using card (the annoying thing is that I still called stanbic recently (last week), and they said, they are still waiting for foreign exchange to be available. meanwhile I applied for my visa on the 10th of August.

Also we would see at Northumbria by the grace of GOD.

So far, I have paid half of my sch fees by transferring Naira to sm1 in d UK's Nigerian GTB Account. He den exchanges ds Naira in d UK for N507 to £1. I dont really know hw he does it or if GTBank charges him transaction expenses. Dis method ws only recommended to me. I just hope am nt being cheated.

I didnt use Form A cos i felt it will waste time as I am applying for visa now. After my visa, i think I cn calm down and pay d remaining tuition tru Form A. I heard it offers a cheaper rate dan blak market. Is ds true?

Can my living exp also be sent to me using form A. Please what method do u guys use to receive payment? Or what do u recomnend I do?

I am creating this thread so that people can share their experiences of how long it took them after writing tests and attending interviews, before receiving offer letters from their employers.

This will encourage several unemployed graduates at various recruitment stages who are still waiting for feedback from their prospective employers, especially in this period that many companies seems to have suspended their recruitment.

As for me this is my 8th month in the Stanbic IBTC Bank race. I have reached documentation stage with no news from them since May.

Good morning Nairalanders,
I am a graduate of accounting. I completed my accountancy degree in 2014, finishing first class. I completed my NYSC last October. I have searched for jobs to no avail. I actually did test and interviews with some companies, but am yet to receive an offer letter from any of them. For one of the big banks especially, I got to their documentation stage and heard nothing from them again. I even learnt that my contact person was sacked when banks were sacking. Her official email is no longer receiving emails.

Now to my main question:
Due to the fact that I couldn't secure a job, my parents decided I go to study for a masters degree in Accounting in the UK, starting in September. I am currently in the final level of my ICAN examination, with 5 papers left, which I plan to take 2 in November and 3 in May 2017 (ICAN has an exam centre in London). The University I will be going to offers an optional CFA level 1 route along side M.Sc. Accounting. But on a personal note, I find this very expensive to fund with the current Naira to Pound exchange rate (I don't want to overburden my parents- they have other dependants), and since I will be depending on my parents for my every needs. I will need to pay about 1500 pounds for the CFA 1 lectures to the university aside the CFA registration and exam fees. I will spend about 1000 pounds (as against approximately 100k if i was to write in in Nigeria) on ICAN in UK as exam fee and travel expense, since I plan to do self study.

My daddy is now suggesting that I forget ICAN for now and concentrate on doing CFA, because he will want me to come back with internationally recognized certificates to increase my job prospects on my return. But my own thought is that by the time I will be returning from UK, I will both be ICAN Chartered and hold a UK Masters degree. I tried to explain to him that from my little knowledge of CFA, it is a rather limited certification (I believe its mainly for Investment bankers, though I will still apply to Investment Banks when I return) unlike ICAN which gives broader prospects. I am of the opinion that assuming I return to Nigeria in October 2017, I can quickly register as an ACCA student, to have the ACCA in view on my CV, then I will also register as a CFA student, to have the CFA in view, on my CV. I believe that this can increase my chances of also entering Investment Banking. Instead of paying 1500 pounds for CFA lectures to my university, I am thinking it will be cheaper for me to come back to Nigeria first and pay lecture fees here in Naira. I have a passion for setting up businesses, to be self employed and provide jobs for people later on, but I really love to practice Accounting in this my youthful age, and then save up to start my own business.

Please I will appreciate advice from knowledgeable and experienced professionals. Should I heed my dads call?

1. You can confirm that from your bank.

2. Opening bank account in the UK is something you have to do else it will cost you even more to survive here.

3. I don't know as the fee changes.

4. Hold as much as you can, if you can hold £5000 or above then you will have no problem surviving here

1. By opening an account in the UK, do you mean that I will open an account with a Nigerian Bank, eg GTB in the UK?
2. Assuming i open a UK account, If they want to send money to me, will my parents need to convert the money to pounds with Aboki first or something like that?
3. Is there MTN, Glo or Airtel in UK? If no, what sim should i get on my arrival. How much is their data plan? I think if i can have a good data plan i can even be calling naija through free whatsapp call to save more.
4. Please do you have info about students writing ICAN in UK, I hope to complete my exams there? I know ICAN has an exam centre in London.
5. What job websites should i begin to check from now, so that i can get a part time job at least few months after my arrival?

Contact the admissions office they will have details of accommodation.
There is a lot of student accommodation to rent there.

Also search on line for Bangor student accommodation.

Some would suggest that low living expense is because there is nothing to spend money on!
Bangor is very quiet and in North Wales.
Most entertainment will be through the university.

Few jobs there and most will be low wages in shops.
Priority for jobs will be given to Welsh speakers!

@mizztee - there are a few events here and there but I don't attend them - probably best to google them. If I remember vaguely, most African societies of the top MBA programmes do a yearly conference and they are great for networking. Check out LBS, Oxford, Cambridge etc.

My exit plan is to be my own boss so no you won't be receiving my resume EVER! Headhunters get in touch with me everyday ESP to move to Nigeria to work for international PE firms and banks and I dont even consider them and you are here talking about your miserable company. In fact if you knew anything about banking as you claim, you will know that salaries are at a high and bonuses low so the total comp is relatively stable. And while you are at it, why don't you tell me what other sectors have comparable salary levels with banking even at its trough? So you want me to believe you receive resumes from bankers yet you can't believe that I work as a banker. What makes your post more believable than mine? Infact keep lying to yourself that people send you resumes - mr hotshot my foot!

Btw, Nigerians are such bullies - y'all want me to say I am suffering. This thread was raised to encourage people looking to the UK for better opportunities. I shared general experiences, I was accused of lying. Made it a bit more personal but of course I am lying! If you want me to tell a tale of woes in the UK - unfortunately for you I have none. It hasn't always been an easy journey but nonetheless it's been a progressive journey. People around me have successful careers as engineers, SAP consultants, doctors etc but I can only speak of my experiences and it happens to be tilted to banking. The message of my posts on this thread is that is possible to excel in a chosen career in the UK. Investment banking salaries are all over the Internet if anyone wants to crosscheck. I mean is the problem that I made up the salaries or the fact that I said I am a banker and potentially earn that sort of salary. Because google is eveyone's best friend - most financial forums have these salaries. Please ignore I said I was a banker - focus on the message of this thread.

As an aside and for anyone who needs encouragement - there are 2 young people I mentor who have full time offers from top firms and they graduate next year so they have jobs before they even graduate and no it's from investment banks! I mean everyone knows how tough it is getting a job now and even tougher if you need a work permit. But I am sure hundreds of Nigerians have managed to secure full time offers with full sponsorship of work permits in this same 'hard' UK. I always stress the importance of attending top schools and doing everything possible to secure an internship while studying. It's not a guarantee but goes a long way in securing a decent graduate job.
