released on Thursday
Nigeria ’s senior national team has dropped a place to end
2014 as the 43rd best team in the world and ninth in Africa
according to the latest Fifa world ranking released on
Thursday.
Stephen Keshi’s men began the year on a shaky note as they
dropped four places to 41st in the January no thanks to their
2-1 defeat to Mali in the African Nations Championship game,
a tournament that has been upgraded to ranking status by
Fifa.
In February, they continued their slow and steady fall as they
dropped six places to 47th.
Super Eagles maintained the same position in March thanks
to their goalless draw with Mexico in an international friendly.
For the first time in the year, Nigeria moved up the ladder as
they were rated 45th in the April standing.
This rise continued in May as they moved a spot upward to
climb to the 44th spot in the world and sixth in Africa – a
mark they held on to going into the Fifa World Cup Brazil and
also in the June version of the grading.
Nigeria’s biggest progress came in July as they climbed ten
places to 34th spot following their impressive showing at the
Fifa World Cup despite their second round dismissal by
France. In August, the African champions continued to mount
northward as they were placed 33rd.
Things got worse in September as they crashed four places to
37th position in the world and declined five spots in October
and maintained the same position in November 2014.
World champions Germany topped the final ranking of the
year for the second time since 1993, while South American
giants Argentina and Colombia finished in second and third
place respectively.
Algeria ended 2014 as the best team in Africa followed by
Tunisia and Cote d’Ivoire while the Black Stars of Ghana were
adjudged they fifth best team in Africa and are also ranked
37th in the world.

The technical director of the NFF has asked the Super Eagles
trainer to leave after failing to take the African champions to
Afcon 2015
Former Nigeria coach Shaibu Amodu has told Stephen Keshi
to stop his demand for a new contract and quit after failing to
lead the Super Eagles to the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
The defending African champions failed to reach January’s
Afcon after placing third in a group that included South Africa,
Congo and Sudan.
Amodu, recently appointed as Technical Director by the
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), said that the Big Boss
should not expect the NFF to offer him a fresh contract.
"Stephen Keshi alone will decide if he has a reputation or he
does not have a reputation. If he has a reputation he will
walk out of the job, if he does not have, he should stay like a
beggar,” Amodu said.
"To keep Keshi is bad precedence because when Samson
Siasia failed, we came on air to tell the whole country that he
had failed [and] that he should go.
“President Goodluck Jonathan could not save him, so if we
want to live on those standards, what is good for the goose is
good for the gander. But you must know that this is my
personal opinion.”
Amodu also revealed his decision not to take over the team
for their last pair of Afcon qualifiers.
“As a coach, you are as good as your last game. If as at the
time I was asked to oversee the two remaining Afcon
qualifiers, I would have been assumed to have failed,” he
said.
Both Amodu and Keshi worked together in 2002 as the Eagles
finished third at the Afcon in Mali.
Meanwhile, the leadership of NFF led by Amaju Pinnick has
declared that the federation was still in talks which could
possibly hand Keshi a new contract.
According to Pinnick, “We even spoke with him on Monday,
agreement is not something you rush. Both sides have to
agree on certain terms. We are also looking at who can work
amicably with others.”
Nigeria are not in a hurry to settle the coaching job as their
next international engagements come up in March 2015.

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea believes the club
can mount a serious title challenge after Sunday's 3-0 win
over Liverpool.
Goals from Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Robin van Persie
secured triumph for Louis van Gaal's side but it could have
been a different story without De Gea's heroics at the other
end.
Three fine stops from Raheem Sterling extended the England
forward's scoreless run for club and country to 21 matches,
and De Gea also displayed razor-sharp reactions to twice
deny half-time substitute Mario Balotelli.
A sixth straight league win leaves them third in the table, five
points behind neighbours Manchester City and a further three
shy of leaders Chelsea, and De Gea has called on his team-
mates to now maintain their current form.
"We have to go step by step, game by game," De Gea told
Sky Sports .
"We want to be in first position but we need to keep training
hard and playing like this.
"I'm really happy with the three points against Liverpool, of
course. We played a very good game, we scored three goals
and that's fantastic.
"In the first half I saved two against Sterling and in the second
half Balotelli. We scored three goals and it is unbelievable."
Van Persie led the plaudits for De Gea and also paid tribute to
United's defensive unit, where midfielder Michael Carrick was
a reassuring presence in the middle of a back three.
"I think overall we played a good game and David was
outstanding again," he added.
"He was absolutely brilliant, like he always is.
"In those games it is always important to score first. It gives
you an extra bit of calmness and I think, although at times we

Luis Enrique believes Barcelona can feel confident of beating
Paris Saint-Germain and topping Champions League Group F.
The Catalans head into Wednesday's final group game at
Camp Nou knowing only a victory will do if they wish to
leapfrog the French champions into top spot.
Both teams have already qualified comfortably for the
knockout stages, but PSG sit a point clear of Barca at the
summit with just one game remaining - thanks in no small
part to their thrilling 3-2 win over Lionel Messi and Co. in
Paris in September.

PSG know how important going through in first place could

any of Europe's five most major leagues not to have lost a
game in any competition this term.
Laurent Blanc's side have won 15 and drawn eight of their 23
matches thus far in 2014-15, with last weekend's victory
against Nantes coming courtesy of a brace from former Barca
striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
However, Blanc is well aware that PSG's unbeaten run is set
for its sternest examination yet, and has called on his players
to up their game ahead of their crucial trip to Spain.
"We're happy to have won [against Nantes], but we will need
to improve to get a win against Barcelona," the Frenchman,

As is the case for any team visiting Camp Nou, keeping Messi

The former England captain netted late on but after Lazar
Markovic was sent off, Brendan Rodgers' side could not find
the winning goal they needed to reach the knockout stages
Steven Gerrard could not haul 10-man Liverpool into the
knockout stages of the Champions League as Basel drew 1-1
at Anfield.
Paulo Sousa's team only required a draw to seal second
place in Group B behind Real Madrid but dominated the first
half either side of Fabian Frei's 25th-minute strike.
Ten years ago this week, Liverpool famously overturned the
odds in their final group game to beat Olympiacos 3-1 and
qualify en route to eventual 2005 Champions League glory in
Istanbul.
But a disjointed performance meant similar heroics felt highly
unlikely on Tuesday, even before substitute Lazar Markovic
was sent off 15 minutes after being introduced.
Gerrard, who scored decisively a decade ago, made Anfield
dream again with a brilliant 81st-minute free-kick.
Jordan Henderson's deflected header almost found the net
four minutes from time, although five consecutive winless
outings means Liverpool's European campaign will now
continue at Europa League level.
Basel enjoyed the first clear opening of the match in the 13th
minute when Luca Zuffi’s throughball caught out a
disorganised Liverpool defence and met Shkelzen Gashi's
intelligent run, although the forward steered his shot over.
Liverpool should have created a better chance when
Henderson's lofted ball found Raheem Sterling in the Basel
penalty area but the England international's cut-back to
Gerrard was ill judged and under hit.
Indecisiveness was a feature of the hosts' play all over the
pitch and there was a sense of inevitability when the Swiss
side retained possession well for Zuffi to lay off and Frei to
lash a powerful left-footed shot into the bottom corner.
Sterling gave Basel goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik his first work of
the game with a routine save but it remained a far more
testing night for the Liverpool defence - left-back Jose Enrique
racing across to thwart Derlis Gonzalez after Zuffi was again
given room to torment the hosts.
Captain Marco Streller volleyed wastefully wide at the back
post in the 32nd minute and Zuffi was the creator once more
as Gashi thumped a low shot home two minutes before an
interval that Liverpool badly needed, only for the Basel man to
be denied by the offside flag.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers introduced Alberto Moreno
and Markovic for Enrique and Rickie Lambert at the interval -
leaving the hosts without a recognised striker.
Looking to inject immediate impetus, Markovic charged down
the Basel left and the visiting defence struggled to clear his
cross before Gerrard sent a 25-yard shot wide.
Markovic and Joe Allen had 57th-minute efforts blocked, the
Serbian winger at least providing a degree of impetus as
Liverpool continued to struggle for fluency.
The better chances remained at the other end, though, the
impressive Taulant Xhaka weaving past a pair of challenges
to shoot agonisingly wide.
Liverpool's task shifted from difficult to improbable in the 60th
minute when Markovic thrust a hand in Behrang Safari's
direction.
The contact was minimal and the Basel defender's reaction
highly theatrical, but referee Bjorn Kuipers produced his red
card to Anfield's dismay.
The home faithful felt it should have been 10-a-side in the
71st minute but Vaclik raced out well to first get a hand to the
ball when Sterling sent Gerrard racing clear of the visiting
defence.
Almost inevitably, Liverpool's talisman and captain threatened
a late twist when he clattered a shot home via the upright
and, after his header, Henderson then tested Vaclik with a
venomous drive in stoppage time.
Zuffi and Xhaka came close to settling Basel nerves on the
break in a frantic finish while substitute Breel Embolo also
threatened as Liverpool were left to reflect on falling some
way short on their return to the top table of European football.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale struck in the first half to
help give Real Madrid a 4-0 win over Ludogorets and make it
six wins out of six in Champions League Group B.
The defending European champions were guaranteed top spot
but recorded maximum points for the second time in their
history after further goals from Alvaro Arbeloa and Alvaro
Medran sealed victory.
Ludogorets saw Marcelinho sent off midway through the first
half and missed out on the Europa League as they struggled
to contain the quality of the Spanish giants.
Amid early pressure from Real, Ludogorets' slim hopes of
taking anything from the Santiago Bernabeu diminished with
the loss of a man and a goal in quick succession.
Marcelinho – on target in the reverse fixture - handled
Raphael Varane's goalbound header to earn a straight red
card before Ronaldo converted the penalty to move past club
legend Raul to outright second in the competition's record
scorers list with his 72nd Champions League goal.
Bale doubled the advantage late in the first half with a header
from Toni Kroos' corner before Arbeloa added a third 10
minutes from time with his first goal in over a year.
Young midfielder Medran added a touch of gloss to a
straightforward outing with a late strike - his first at senior
level - as Real eased to a 19th straight win in all competitions
- breaking Barcelona's Spanish record for consecutive
victories.
Having fallen behind early in the reverse fixture, Real were on
the front foot from the off with Bale and Javier Hernandez
threatening with headers in the opening stages.
Isco was thwarted by a smart Vladislav Stoyanov save 14
minutes in following Asier Illarramendi's clever ball before
Virgil Misidjan tested Keylor Navas with a curled strike from
the edge of the area.
However, Ludogorets were dealt a double blow 19 minutes in
when Marcelinho was sent off for blocking Varane's header
on the line with his hand.
Ronaldo made the visitors pay with a chipped effort from 12
yards to open the scoring and set Real on their way.
Ludogorets managed to keep Real at bay somewhat after the
opener - displaying the defensive shape that had seen them
lose just once in 11 games prior to Tuesday's clash.
However, the hosts' quality came to the fore again eight
minutes before the break as Bale crashed a header off the
crossbar and past Stoyanov to ease Real into the break two
goals ahead.
Making the most of their numerical advantage, Real continued
to threaten although visiting captain Svetoslav Dyakov went
close before the hour as Navas was forced into an acrobatic
stop.
With Georgi Dermendzhiev's men defending impressively and
Real's victory under no real pressure, chances were at a
premium until the latter stages.
Arbeloa - having already seen a header hit the crossbar -
finished from close range before Medran's deflected strike
looped over Stoyanov to give the 20-year-old his first goal for
the club on his Champions League bow.
