In a carnival-like atmosphere, Nigeria Bankers Games
Cup holders, Skye Bank on Sunday successfully
defended their football event title and went on to set a
new record four title wins. Skye Bank also emerged the
first side to win the Cup three times on the trot. Skye
Bank defeated United Bank for Africa (UBA) 5-3 on
penalties after regular time score had stood at 1-1.
Standard Chartered bank won the third place play-off
against First Bank 7-6 on penalties after a hard fought
game that ended with neither side scoring in regulation
time.
Skye Bank had lived dangerously through the final
stages of the tournament winning all their games on
penalties. It began with the quarter finals where the
luck of the lottery smiled on them against Sterling
Bank 5-4 and then in the semi-finals, they again had
luck seeing them through on penalties, again 5-4 and in
both cases as with the finals, scores on regular time
were 1-1.
Skye Bank fans had trooped to the Onikan Waterfront
venue in bus loads as though they had the assurance of
the Octopus but then it was UBA that drew the first
blood through prolific Seun Mohammed on 29th
minute. It was Mohammed’s seventh goal and they
took the lead into the second half when another
Bankers Games veteran, Kayode Abdulrasheed restored
parity for Skye on 58 minutes.
Mohammed would go on to emerge highest goal
scorer and was very elegant in losing the trophy.
“Penalty shootout could go any way, we thought we
had it wrapped up in the first half but we conceded a
late equalizer and they were luckier with the shoot-out.
I congratulate Skye Bank for beating us to the record”.
Skye Banks Yahaya Yakubu was expectedly filled with
joy and said: “we are so happy. The cup did not come
easy but we picked up ourselves and kept on going,
being at the top is not easy because of the pressure to
sustain the tempo”.
Sterling Bank emerged the overall champions of the
2013 NBG and their Regional Business Executive
Kayode Lawal said the win will hopefully give Sterling
bank more visibility to the brand Sterling bank. He
equally commended the organizers of the event Media
Vision for putting up a good show.
