EducationASUU Strike Hits University Of Ibadan by Baze1(op): 8:54pm On Apr 05, 2017
Academic activities were paralysed on Wednesday at the University of Ibadan (UI) as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) commenced its one week warning strike.
The strike forced most students to stay indoors at their halls of residence, as the strike monitoring committee put in place by the union led by the Chairman of the ASUU in the Branch, Dr Deji Omole monitored development.
Omole, who moved round the faculties to monitor compliance, described the strike as successful and urged members to continue to defend their interests.
“The congress of ASUU, UI branch, at its meeting of April 4, received permission from the national body of the union, declaring one week warning strike beginning from Wednesday, April 5 to Tuesday, April 11,” he said.
He said the warning strike was to compel the university administration to address pending welfare matters affecting the members.
He identified some of the issues to include, shortfall and fractional payment of salary of members, illegal pension deductions, non-payment of postgraduate supervision allowance and non-payment of promotion arrears.
“During the strike period our members are not to be involved in teaching, supervision, or attend to statutory and ad hoc meetings,” Omole said.
He advised members to remain resolute and await further directives from the leadership of the union at the branch level.

PoliticsBlame Buhari For Recession – Utomi by Baze1(op): 8:37pm On Apr 05, 2017
By Vincent Ujumadu
Awka – THE director of the Lagos Business School, Prof. Pat Utomi Wednesday in Awka blamed the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari for the economic recession in the country, arguing that those attributing the recession to fall in oil price were bad mangers.

Utomi, who spoke as guest lecturer at the maiden edition of Dr Emmanuel Egbogah budget round-table organized by the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Business School, Awka, said the Buhari government should have foreseen the situation, had it been that it was futuristic in budget planning and management of resources.
His lecture titled: “Budget Processes In Nigeria: Challenges And Implications For National Development”, blamed the situation in the country on lack foresight, adding that a good national budget ought to have preempted the situation.
According to him, a good budget should contain what the people want and envisage the implications of future economic changes and challenges.
He said: “Our major problem is that we lack planning and if there is no discipline, then budgeting is a waste of time.
“Budgeting process must be matched with where the people are going, but beyond revenue and expenditure, budget has to do with discipline and execution.
“Those blaming fall in oil price are just bad mangers because fall in oil price is not the cause of this recession.”
Utomi also lamented the prevailing backwardness in the country, stating that the sad situation was basically thrown up by the events of 1966, when, he said, a gang of military boys hijacked the leadership of the country.
According to him, the same characters had remained in power since then in different guises.
In his keynote address, the deputy chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Mr. Chris Azubuogu listed factors that hindered the actualization of national budget to include poor funding of budget, lopsided budgeting, deficit budget and high domestic debt profile which he said was in trillions of naira.
In his address, the director of the school, Prof Austin Nonyelu said the conference was necessitated by the challenges and problems that bedeviled Nigeria’s budget process at all levels of governance, which he noted, had impacted negatively on service delivery.
He said Nigeria budget process at all levels of governance was bedeviled by myriad challenges and problems which impact negatively on service delivery.
“The common narrative in Nigeria is that federal and state budgets are rarely implemented with consequential negative effects.
“The newly established Unizik Business School in Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka is committed to unraveling these issues, and hopes to provide the roadmap that will direct, and reorient the entire mechanisms and processes involved in budget development and implementation,” he said.

EducationTertiary Institutions Begin Indefinite Strike In Nasarawa by Baze1(op): 6:03pm On Apr 05, 2017
State-owned tertiary institutions in Nasarawa have embarked on an indefinite strike, citing government’s refusal to address welfare-related issues.
Institutions involved in the action included the College of Education, Akwanga, College of Agriculture, Lafia and the Nasarawa State, Polytechnic, Lafia.
The workers, under the aegis of the Joint Union of Tertiary Institutions (JUTI), told newsmen on Wednesday in Lafia that they had exhausted avenues toward an amicable resolution of the dispute and were left with no alternative.
According to Mr Samuel Bashayi, chairman of the state’s chapter of JUTI, the workers resolved to shut down the institutions at a meeting held at the State Polytechnic, Lafia, on Tuesday, April 4.
He said that the state government had been “very insensitive” to the plight of the workers and had equally failed to address issues impeding effective service delivery.
“The government has also failed to implement agreements reached between the workers and the government, through the Governing Councils of the institutions,” he added.
He regretted that the union’s repeated notices were ignored, and listed key areas of concern to include promotion, annual increment, arrears, among others.
“Instead of paying our allowances, government has chosen to dare us by removing even the allowances we used to take for granted,” he said.
Bashayi advised workers to remain at home and await further directives.
Correspondents of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who went round the three affected institutions, met the gates locked in full compliance.

Crime‘i’m Guilty My Lord,’ INEC Staff Pleads Guilty To N23bn Diezani Bribe by Baze1(op): 5:56pm On Apr 05, 2017
A staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Christian Nwosu has pleaded guilty to receiving N30 million as bribe from the N23 billion alleged Diezani bribe meant to compromise electoral officers before the 2015 general election.
Nwosu was among three INEC officials that were on Wednesday docked by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, before Justice M. B. Idris of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos on a 7-count charge bordering on receiving gratification to the tune of N264,880,000.
Nwosu and the other accused persons-Yisa Olanrewaju Adedoyin and Tijani Bashir had, on March 27, 2015, allegedly received bribes from a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Allison-Madueke, ahead of the 2015 general election.
Count one of the charges reads: “That you, Mrs. Diezani Allison – Madueke (still at large), Christian Nwosu, Yisa Olanrewaju Adedoyin and Tijani Bashir on or about the 27th day of March, 2015 in Nigeria within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court conspired among yourselves to directly take possession of N264,880,000 (Two Hundred and Sixty-four Million, Eight Hundred and Eighty Thousand Naira) which sum you reasonably ought to have known forms part of the proceeds of an unlawful act to wit: gratification and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 18(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2002 and punishable under Section 15(3) of the same Act.”
Another count reads: “That you, Christian Nwosu on or about the 27 day of March, 2015 in Nigeria within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court directly used the sum of N30,000,000 which sum you reasonably ought to have known forms part of the proceeds of an unlawful act to wit: gratification and you hereby committed an offence contrary to Section 15(2)(a) of the money laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act 2012 and punishable under Section 15(3) of the same Act.”
Both the second and third defendants, Adedoyin and Bashir, pleaded not guilty to the charges..
However, the first defendant, Nwosu, pleaded guilty to the charge preferred against him.
Counsel to the first defendant, Adaku Ngbangba, pleaded with the court to grant her client bail on self-recognizance, adding that “he is a first-time offender. He has put in over 20 years in service. Given his honestly, I urge you, my Lord, to grant him bail on liberal terms.’’
Counsel to the second defendant, Ngbangba, as well as counsel to the third defendant, Nelson Imoh, also pleaded with the court to grant their clients bail on self-recognizance.
In his address, the prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, told the court that the first defendant had entered a plea bargain agreement with the Commission.
He said: “We received the sum of $115 million kept in the custody of Fidelity Bank Plc, which was subsequently converted to N23bn.
“Of this amount of money, it was alleged that the first defendant received a cash payment of N30, 000,000. 00 as Director and Administrative Secretary, INEC, Kwara State.
“The first defendant went to Fidelity Bank and signed for N264, 880,000. This was left in the bank in the custody of the third defendant who carried it in a Hilux bus and was making cash payment/withdrawals without going through any financial institutions.
“In the course of making the cash payments, the third defendant paid the first defendant the total sum of N30, 000,000 cash.”
Oyedepo further told the court that the first defendant was invited to the Commission’s office, where he made his statement under words of caution.
He stated that the receipt of payment of the money signed for by the first defendant was also retrieved by the Commission.
Both the statement and the receipt were tendered and admitted as exhibits A-A6 by the court.
Oyedepo also told the court that the first defendant had admitted essentially to the ingredients of the alleged offence in his statement to the Commission on December 12, 2016.
The first defendant in his statement, according to Oyedepo, admitted to have benefitted N30, 000,000.
Oyedepo, in his address, also stated that “the first defendant also gave account of the properties he used the money to acquire.
“He brought the title documents to the EFCC office.
“Having demonstrated remorse and given useful information to aid the prosecution of the case, he has entered into an agreement to forfeit the properties to the Federal Government.
The properties are listed in the paragraphs 1 and 2 of the plea bargain agreement.
“The EFCC has recovered the N5m left from the first defendant, having spent N25m to acquire properties.”
He also urged the court to convict the first defendant in line with the count seven of the charges and adopt the term contained in the plea bargain agreement.
Consequently, Justice Idris found the first defendant liable as charged on count seven.
He, however, deferred the sentencing of the first defendant to May 7, 2017.
The first defendant was ordered to be remanded in the EFCC custody till the next adjourned date.
Justice Idris admitted both the second and third defendants to bail in the sum of N50 million, with two sureties in like sum.
The sureties must have landed properties within the jurisdiction of the court.
The second and third accused persons must submit their international passport to the court.
They were ordered to be remanded in prison custody till the perfection of their bail conditions.
The case was adjourned to May 7, 2017 for continuation of trial.

PoliticsDSS Clears Saraki Of N310m Ownership by Baze1(op): 9:28pm On Apr 02, 2017
By Soni Daniel, Northern Region Editor and Henry Umoru
As the controversy over the ownership of N310 million allegedly stolen from the Maitama home of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki gathers storm, the Department of State Security Service, DSS, Sunday night cleared him of any culpability.

The DSS said in clear terms that the cash did not belong to Saraki or any member of the National Assembly and accused its dismissed staff, who is now standing trial for armed robbery, Abdulrasheed Maigari, of trying to fabricate a lie for a hidden motive.

It will be recalled that Maigari, a former DSS operative, had said that he and others connived to steal the huge cash from the Senate President’s home when they were working as security operatives in his house

PoliticsDino VS Sahara Reporters: If It Takes My Life, So Be It - Sowore by Baze1(op): 11:24am On Mar 26, 2017
The tussle between Nigerian senator, Dino Melaye and online publication, Sahara Reporters is getting heated by the day. A few hours ago, publisher of Sahara Reports shared a purported screenshot of an email from London School of Economics and Political Science saying they have no evidence of Dino Melaye passing through the school.
Sowore then went on to share a bold article on his Facebook page saying, 'If it takes my life, so be it. If it means another unjust ruling asking for damages for thieves. So be it'. Read his full piece after the cut...
Folks: It was brought to my attention earlier that Nigerian Senator Dino Melaye promised to 'send me to jail' over the recent unraveling of his questionable educational background. While some are worried, appalled, alarmed and concerned and even scared about this declaration, it had me thinking differently. I am a Nigerian citizen who had been through torture, humiliations, and incarceration by dictators in uniform between 1992-1999 before I eventually left Nigeria.
I have never doubted the power of justice over legalities. That a Nigerian Senator in a democratic era could make this proclamation is indeed a sign that our democratic transition was a farce, particular when you've now noticed that Mr. Melaye was sitting at the feet of one of Nigeria's worst military dictators, Ibrahim Babangida just a week ago.
One of Babangida's worst crimes against humanity was the assassination of notable investigative journalists of our time, Dele Giwa, by way of a parcel bomb. Another thing Melaye shares in common with Babangida and his killer squad was using libel lawsuits to silence inquisitions.
In the 80's Gani Fawehimi was found liable of libeling the killers of Dele Giwa and asked to pay damages to Halilu Akilu.
Here is how I am different and also not different, I am not going to run away from criminals running the Nigerian political space until they are defeated, and their ideologies of greed, bloodiness, and avarice are entirely abandoned and discredited forever (Apology to Bob Marley).
If it takes my life, so be it. If it means another unjust ruling asking for damages for thieves. So be it. We must take our space back from the 10 percenters, drug dealers, certificate forgers, money launderers, political manipulators, and assassins.
Thank you

PoliticsDSS Vs Magu: Presidency Reacts Again by Baze1(op): 8:16pm On Mar 25, 2017
Presidency, Saturday night, said that Nigerians would be told its position on the rejection of Ibrahim Magu as the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC by the Senate immediately President Muhammadu Buhari speaks on the matter.
Why recalling that it had waited for the Senate to officially communicate to it, the Presidency which has acknowledged the receipt of the report now said that Buhari was yet to formerly speak on the matter.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina made the Presidency’s new position known in a phone chat.
He said: “Our last public position was that when they communicate to the president, we will respond. Now, they have communicated, just wait for the official. When the President responds, the country will know.”
It will be recalled that the Senate’s rejection of Magu was based on a security report from the Department of State Service, DSS among others.
While Magu was yet to disproof the report, the DSS on Friday released another set of damning reports, insisting that Magu was unfit to lead the anti-graft agency as its Chairman.

PoliticsAlleged Fraud: SGF, Babachir Challenges Senate’s Invitation In Court by Baze1(op): 9:59pm On Mar 22, 2017
Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Lawal Babachir, said he would not honour Senate’s invitation on Thursday over the handling of funds for North-East rehabilitation.

This is because he has headed to the court to challenge the propriety of the invitation and his being investigated on the issue.
An ad hoc Committee on Humanitarian Crisis in the North-East investigating allegations of misappropriation of funds for rehabilitation of the region had invited the SGF to a public hearing on the issue.
The invitation was dated March 15 and it asked the SGF to appear on Thursday.
The SGF was formally invited after his indictment by the committee at the first public hearing on the matter, for which the presidency had said that he (SGF) was not given fair hearing.
In the letter to him, the committee had indicated that the essence of the second public hearing was another opportunity of fair hearing for stakeholders who refused to attend the first hearing.
But, in a letter to the Chairman of the ad hoc committee, Sen. Shehu Sani, in Abuja on Wednesday, the SGF said that rather than attend the hearing, he was challenging the invitation at the court.
The letter signed by the SGF read: “your letter of invitation to appear before the above committee refers.
“I wish to kindly request that you draw the attention of the other members of the committee that I will not be able to appear before the committee primarily because I have gone to court to challenge the invitation among others.
“Please find attached the court documents.”
The President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, had on Jan. 24, 2017 read a letter from President Muhammadu Buhari stating that the SGF was not given fair hearing at first hearing.

From Adenta to Chicago, to New York, city after city, that’s how music star, Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade also known as Mr. Eazi has been touring in the last couple of weeks, gathering accolades from left, right and center, making money and promoting his brand around the world. Friends and close associates of the ‘Leg Over’ crooner are however lamenting his weird lifestyle.
For instance, it was revealed that before he left for his tour, the budding musician had a misunderstanding with his manager as regards his choice of apartment. Upon his rise to fame, his manager had suggested they move to a bigger and better apartment on the Island which the crooner objected to.

After months of disagreement on the above subject, it was revealed that Mr. Eazi succumbed to his manager’s option, but the problem became the choice of apartment. While the crooner opted for a one bedroom apartment, his manager wanted something bigger, more like a duplex, submitted our source.
Buttressing on the gist, our source said, Mr. Eazi insisted he’d rather forfeit the temporary comfort of staying in a bigger apartment and save money for his building project. Although it wasn’t revealed to us if the 22-year-old is a miser but it indeed told this reporter that he considers staying in duplex a complete waste of resources.
Eventually as things turned out, the lanky, hat dotting singer and his manager are said to have since settled for a 3-bedroom apartment before leaving Nigeria for their tour.

Zule Zoo -Kerewa
Remember Zule Zoo of Kerewa fame? Their acrobatic dance steps and the originality of their songs were some of the unique features that once made this group a household name. Kerewa was however banned in Nigeria for its obscene video and lewd lyrics. Ibrahim Hassan and Michael (the duo that made up the group) have since gone solo.

Original Stereoman – (E Dey Pain Me)
Jungle musician, Sunday Osakuni, aka Original Stereoman Ekwe, was a promising dance-hall artiste. His hit track, E dey Pain Me , was a street anthem. But just as fans geared up for the release of more singles, he was accused of killing the mother of his child, Rekia Idris.
According to the artiste, his ordeal began after homicide detectives, Force CID Panti, Yaba, Lagos invited him upon allegations that he strangled and killed Rekia in her Honda Civic car, in April 2012. Following the scandal, Stereoman, who says he is a fashion designer with a passion for music, failed to worm his way back into the heart of music fans.

Baba Fryo-Dem Go Dey Pose
Baba Fryo’s Dem Go Dey Pose was a massive hit in the mid-1990s and it made him a household name. He held sway from 1999 to 2003 before he vanished into thin air. The last time anything was heard of him was on August 23, 2012, when policemen reportedly beat him, handcuffed and dragged him to Isashi Police Station, along the Badagry Expressway. The singer still insists that there was no time he ever left music.

Marvelous Benji — Brand New Dance
Kennis Music was the label behind dance hall crooner Marvelous Benji’s success. The artiste was one of the biggest breakout stars out of Ajegunle. Back in the days when Suo, Konto and Galala were ‘it’ dance moves in Nigeria, Marvellous Benji, whose real name is Benjamin Ukueje, also reigned supreme with Brand New Dance . But his popularity dwindled in no time. When the artiste felt it was time to move on, he burned bridges with his breakout record label. He tried to re-launch himself into the music industry in 2012 with two singles, Iwo Ni Mofe and My Life, but his efforts fell short of his first hit.

Bigiano- Shayo
Remember him? Bigiano was a dance hall musician that rocked the airwaves in 2008 with his track, Shayo. His debut single, Shayo , was a massive hit which fetched him awards at the SoundCity Music Video Awards and a nomination at the MTV Africa Music Awards in 2009. Almost a decade after, very little or nothing has been heard about him. He announced his comeback in 2013 but that was never to be.

Konga-Baby Konga
Konga was born Lawal Olumo in Ebute Metta Lagos. He was a young and promising music act who found fame in 2008 after the release of his hit, Baby Konga . Even though his witty lyrics were laced with a lot of vulgar anecdotes, he remained in hot demand. After the song was banned in 2008, he struggled to reclaim that ‘star’ position he once occupied. He also featured on a number of notable collaborations at the time, including X-Project’s Lori Le before fading of the scene.

DeeBee-Collabo
DeeBee, born Adebayo Durojaiye, announced his arrival on the Nigerian music scene with his first single,
Collabo , in 2008. The track shot him into limelight and earned him the moniker “collabo master”. He released his debut album in 2009 and has been off the scene ever since. The then promising singer has been doing music underground but is yet to produce a major hit.

Soul E- Soul E Baba Dey

Soul E bagged his first record deal with “Colossal Entertainment” at age 21. Soul E Baba Dey, a track off his debut album titled Naija is Blessed , shot him into limelight. So promising was the baby-faced singer, whose real name is Emmanuel Okose, that at the time he was tipped to become the next 2face Idibia. But, alas, he fell off the radar before he attained super stardom. At the height of his reign, he was romantically linked with Queen Ure who was a banker at the time. He, however, vehemently denied that he was ever married to her even after their divorce was made public. Now a prophet, he is popular for his controversial prophecies and social media posts.

A recent fascination of many artistes in the Nigerian music scene is the grandiose display of wealth on Instagram. In a few years from now, only a few popular Nigerian songs might remain relevant. While the likes of 2face and P Square manage to churn out hit after hit, others courted fame with just one track and then drifted off the limelight.
A few who dared to stage a comeback failed to produce major hits.

Jazman Olofin ft. Adewale Ayuba –Raise Tha Roof
Jazzman Olofin emerged in the Nigerian music scene in the late 1990s along with singer Lexy Doo in the group X-Appeal. After parting ways, he released his debut album, ‘Boiling Point’, then signed on with Storm Records. The 43-year-old artiste released his greatest hit, Raise Tha Roof , 15 years ago. It was everyone’s favourite song and a national anthem of some sort at that time. The track earned him rave reviews and saw him perform at sold-out concerts nationwide. Although he has dropped several hits afterwards, none of them could match the appeal that Raise Tha Roof garnered. His most recent track titled “Shade” didn’t pull much weight either.

PoliticsBreaking. What Magu Told Buhari On SSS Allegations by Baze1(op): 9:28pm On Mar 17, 2017
In response to the query President Muhammadu Buhari ordered, the embattled acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, questioned the sincerity and motive of the State Security Service, SSS, which accused him of integrity deficiency and professional misconduct, official correspondence reviewed by PREMIUM TIMES showed.
The SSS’ allegations blocked Mr. Magu’s confirmation as the substantive chairman of the EFCC, twice, as the agency repeatedly advised the Senate to reject his nomination because “MAGU has failed the integrity test and will eventually constitute a liability to the anti-corruption drive of the present administration.”
After the Senate first rejected Mr. Magu’s nomination by Mr. Buhari in December 2016, citing the allegations made against the nominee by the SSS, the President authorised the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, to investigate the validity of the allegations.
In compliance, Mr. Malami on December 19 asked Mr. Magu to “respond within 48 hours” to the SSS’ allegations.
In his response, on December 21, Mr. Magu said he considered all the issues raised against him and provided “point-by-point response.”
MISSING FILES AND DISMISSAL FROM EFCC
Mr. Magu admitted official documents relating to cases under investigation were found in his private home when raided “on the order of Mrs. Farida Waziri when she succeeded Mallam Nuhu Ribadu as the chairman of the EFCC.”
But in defence, he said at the time, he had not formally handed over to Umar Sanda, his successor as head of Economic Governance Unit; and carrying out his duty at the time was impossible without working from home.
“The documents found in my house were actually found in my office bag where I kept documents relating to investigations,” he said. “I was in the process of handing over and it would be wrong to suggest that I wilfully kept the Commission’s files at home.”
Following the matter, Mr. Magu was placed on suspension without pay for 20 months during which the police was carrying out investigation, he said.
“But in the end, I was reprimanded, recalled and promoted to Assistant Commissioner of Police.”
He continued: “It is important sir, to draw your attention to the fact that some of us that worked closely with Ribadu were victimised after his exit. And my ordeal was orchestrated as punishment for being the chief investigative officer for most of the high profile cases involving politically exposed persons some of whom became very influential in government at the time.”
Mr. Magu later returned to the EFCC upon the exit of Mrs. Waziri. But the SSS said his “close working relationship” with and how he was brought back by Ibrahim Lamorde, Mrs. Waziri’s successor, indicated “his culpability in the allegations of corrupt tendencies of LAMORDE led EFCC.”
Replying, Mr. Magu said it was “preposterous” for the SSS to allege he was recalled, in 2012 when he was serving in the Anambra police command, to do hatchet job for Mr. Lamorde.
“My job schedule as Deputy Director, Department of Internal Affairs, under Lamorde, was simply handling issues of professional responsibility in the Commission. I had no inputs in core operations duties of the Commission,” said Mr. Magu.
HOUSE RENT, EXTRAVAGANCE, CONTROVERSIAL TIES
Contrary to the claim by the SSS that the residence Mr. Magu currently occupies was rented for him by “a questionable business man” at N40 million for two years, with another N43 million to “lavishly furnish” the apartment, the acting EFCC boss said, “The entire cost for both two-year rent and the furnishing of the house is N39.628million.

“Details of the transaction are contained in the contract award letter and payment schedule which are attached to this letter.”
The SSS had claimed the house was gotten from Mohammed Umar, a retired air commodore, now being tried for money laundering and illegal possession of firearms,
Mr. Magu denied “penchant for air travels” in private jet belonging to Mr. Umar, but admitted he had flown the said aircraft on two occasions: one, offer of ride from Kano to Abuja after an official assignment with two EFCC directors; two, when he was traveling to Maiduguri to see his sick mother.
“These, for me, were harmless gesture as we were both members of the presidential investigative committee on arms procurement. At the time I had no knowledge that he was under investigation for any alleged crimes,” he said.
He also denied he flew with the Managing Director of Fidelity Bank, Nnamdi Okonwko, who is under investigation by the EFCC, to Maiduguri in Mr. Umar’s private jet, stressing he had never flown in a private aircraft with any bank chief.
Further debunking claims he is flamboyant, he said in one instance he flew on a first class ticket with Emirate Airline to perform the lesser Hajj in Saudi Arabia, but argued that was not enough for the SSS to conclude he keeps extravagant lifestyle.
Moreover, he said he opted for first class because tickets for other classes had been sold out at the time, and that he funded the trip from his private pocket.
He did not disclose the cost of the trip for the pilgrimage, but SSS said it was N2,990,196 (about N3 million).
He said his relationship with Mr. Umar had been one of “professional acquaintance devoid of issues of conflict of interest” since their paths crossed when they became members of arms procurement probe panel.
He said: “The claim that EFCC documents, including EFCC letters addressed to the Vice President and being investigation reports on the activities of Emmanuel Kachikwu and his brother Demebi Kachikwu, were found in his home during a search by the DSS came to me as a surprise.
“If that is correct, he should be made to disclose how he came by such documents. I never discussed my official duties with him let alone give him documents pertaining to investigations being conducted by the Commission.”
RELUCTANCE TO ARRAIGN FORMER AIR CHIEF AMOSU
“ Indeed, among the suspects arrested over the arms procurement scandal, he (Adesola Amosu) was most cooperative. The Commission recovered N2.835billion cash from him, aside from property worth One Billion Five Hundred and Eighty-One Million Naira (N1,581, 000, 000), Two Million One Hundred and Fifty Thousand United States Dollars ($2,150, 000) and One Million Pounds Sterling (£1, 000, 000),” said Mr. Magu, explaining that Mr. Amosu’s arraignment was delayed because he cooperated with the EFCC in the process of recovery of proceeds of crime.
Since a key focus of the investigation was to recover as much proceeds of crime as possible, Mr. Magu added, the EFCC took its time to ensure it had recovered what was possible before arraigning the suspect in court.
“This had nothing to do with the wish of any individual.”
Mr. Magu also denied vendetta against Stanley Lawson, whom the SSS report described as one “working in the interest of the Federal Government.”

According to the anti-graft chief, Mr. Lawson was arrested in relation to the investigation into the mismanagement of $118 million public funds for electioneering campaign involving former petroleum resources minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke.
Denying “a bid to settle personal scores” as SSS alleged, Mr. Magu said: “It was discovered that he (Mr. Lawson) made payment of $25 million into Fidelity Bank and also facilitated the purchase of Ogeyi Place Le Meridien Hotel in Port Harcourt for Mrs. Alison Madueke, for which he collected Ninety-Four Million Five Hundred and Sixteen Thousand Naira (N 94, 516,000) as commission.
“Lawson was arrested and he made a refund of the N94.5million traced to him. He was never placed on any watch list.”
He also challenged the SSS to expose any EFCC operative “working closely with me” who is found to have indulged in unethical practices or living beyond legitimate means. That was a response to the allegation that he uses police cronies who have acquired “a lot of landed property” to “execute operations” and “cover his tracks”.
The anti-graft chief then questioned “the fact that DSS authored two separate reports on me.”
PREMIUM TIMES saw the two SSS reports – one to the Senate and the other to the Presidency – released same day, October 3, 2016 and signed by one official, Folashade Bello, on behalf of the Director-General, Lawal Daura.
However, while the two reports discredited Mr. Magu, the one to the Senate asked that he should not be confirmed, while the other one to the presidency said, “it may be expedient to give him benefit of doubt and be considered.”
“The two reports emanating from same agency raises question of sincerity and motive,” Mr. Magu said. You will want to find out why they came up with two conflicting reports on the same subject on the same day.
“It is important to note that in all this, I was not given the opportunity of fair hearing.”
Following Mr. Magu’s response to the attorney general’s query ordered by Mr. Buhari, Mr. Malami reported back to the President.
Acting on the feedback and advice by the attorney general, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo and the Itse Sagay-led anti-corruption advisory council, Mr. Buhari wrote back to the Senate in January, re-nominating Mr. Magu and clearing him of any wrongdoing in respect of the allegations by the SSS.
By re-nominating Mr. Magu and telling the Senate allegations against him were false, the SSS’ competence and capacity was brought to doubt. But the President did not query the SSS headed by his kinsman, Lawal Daura, over the service’s claims.
Consequently, on the eve of Mr. Magu’s confirmation hearing following the second nomination, the SSS wrote the Senate reaffirming its position that Mr. Magu lacks integrity and should not be confirmed, brushing aside the clearance from the Presidency.
With the SSS’ reaffirmation and Mr. Magu’s below-par performance at his confirmation hearing on Wednesday, the Senate again rejected his nomination.
While Senate President Bukola Saraki expressed expectation that Mr. Buhari should consider it normal to replace Mr. Magu immediately, the presidential advsiers on anti-corruption campaign led by Mr. Sagay said the president should either re-nominate Mr. Magu for third time or keep him in acting capacity “because he is the best man for the job”.
But many have accused the president of losing control of his own government in view of the SSS action, and questioned his sincerity about Mr. Magu’s confirmation.
