Alleged Fraud: SGF, Babachir Challenges Senate’s Invitation In Court by Baze1(m): 9:59pm On Mar 22, 2017
Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Lawal Babachir, said he would not honour Senate’s invitation on Thursday over the handling of funds for North-East rehabilitation.

This is because he has headed to the court to challenge the propriety of the invitation and his being investigated on the issue.
An ad hoc Committee on Humanitarian Crisis in the North-East investigating allegations of misappropriation of funds for rehabilitation of the region had invited the SGF to a public hearing on the issue.
The invitation was dated March 15 and it asked the SGF to appear on Thursday.
The SGF was formally invited after his indictment by the committee at the first public hearing on the matter, for which the presidency had said that he (SGF) was not given fair hearing.
In the letter to him, the committee had indicated that the essence of the second public hearing was another opportunity of fair hearing for stakeholders who refused to attend the first hearing.
But, in a letter to the Chairman of the ad hoc committee, Sen. Shehu Sani, in Abuja on Wednesday, the SGF said that rather than attend the hearing, he was challenging the invitation at the court.
The letter signed by the SGF read: “your letter of invitation to appear before the above committee refers.
“I wish to kindly request that you draw the attention of the other members of the committee that I will not be able to appear before the committee primarily because I have gone to court to challenge the invitation among others.
“Please find attached the court documents.”
The President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, had on Jan. 24, 2017 read a letter from President Muhammadu Buhari stating that the SGF was not given fair hearing at first hearing.

OK.... That is the trend now. Go to the Senate for confirmation n screening, take up the appointment, misbehave or embezzle fund, get invitation from same Senate that confirmed you then shun them n head to court..

We really have to shoot down this so called democracy

Really don't see how a court which is an arm of the Judiciary will ask the legislature not to do it's job

This is lack of civility on the part of lawal

No court has authority to do this

The Senate have authority according to the constitution to summon members of the executive. It is their constitutional duty!

You know, many of these appointees of the President have lost their sense of thinking. They had no integrity pre and post appointment.

If this post ever gets to the front page, just watch and see their sai-Buhari-whitewash-media-goons girate like sodium particles in cold water, espousing how the SGF is innocent and immune to senate invitation, until proven guilty.

However, turn the searchlight on the opposition for a moment and see how these same guys cry with shrill voices, telling you that they -- the opposition -- are guilty until proven otherwise.

Nigeria is in a horrible situation. In the previous administration, people stole, like they always have, but it wasnt institutionalised; under Baba's nose now, however, people steal and brag about it, and then insult the Nigerian people who made it possible for them to be there.

God help you President Buhari, but you seriously are NOT helping yourself. Sack these people now before they destroy the possibility of whatever legacy you think to leave behind.

Some of you don't get it

Has any court in Nigeria stopped EFCC from investigating anyone?

So long as EFCC is not trampling on anyone's right through unlawful arrest and detention then they can investigate anyone through legitimate means and no court can stop EFCC from that,

The courts can not tell senate not to summon members of the executive, that's part of oversight which is the primary function of the senate

The senate can not stop the court on interpreting the law and ruling on a case as it sees it. That's the primary function of the court as well.

Please do me a favour, go read about democracy and separation of powers

Why go to court to stop the hearing instead of focusing on clearing his name? This showed the man isn't clean

SHINA PETERS VS JIM OVIA

In 1990, Shina Peters built a house with N20 million naira; the same year Jim Ovia started Zenith Bank with the same amount.

Today, you and I don't have a room in Shina's house but I have an account in Jim's bank and probably you do too.

Shina's house was built in Iju Lagos and remains there till date.
Jim's bank started in a corner and now has over 500 branches in Nigeria, and many international branches.

Millions upon millions transact business in Jim's bank daily.
Shina's house is becoming dilapidated...in 2015, he SPENT more money to renovate the house and bought a Nissan Pathfinder with N10 million...additional liability, while in the same 2015, Jim's bank MADE a profit of N105.7 billion.

Zenith bank employs hundreds of thousands, and feeds their families.

This is the difference between Assets and Liability. If you buy a car for N20 million today, in 20 years time, you will be ashamed to drive it. On the other hand, if you invest that same amount in a lucrative business or in an asset, It may be worth billions in 20 years. ( Jim Ovia is now worth $980 million dollars, with the official dollar rate of N320, that means he is worth N313 BILLION NAIRA because of an investment of N20 million).

Spend the little money you have today wisely. Some people driving expensive cars today, are not aware that they are driving their future and the future of their children. Some people carrying iphone7 today, may not be aware that they are carrying their future.

When you are young, don't spend money. Invest it.
Every penny in your hand is like a seed, you can decide to eat it, or sow it. When you sow it, it will bear much more seeds later in future.
Let's be smart.

Na wa ooooo. Our National Assembly, most especially the Senate has turned to tissue paper which everybody and anybody is using to clean the toilet.

What do you expect when you have African Face of Looters leading some set of corrupt elements calling themes distinguished Senators.

I only pity the professionals with integrity in the 8th Senate. Unfortunately the looters far outnumbered them in all ramifications.

in time, all will be revealed...

PMB's body language shows that he has a soft spot for corrupt people as long as those corrupt people are doing his bidding or are in his government.

BL would have been atleast suspended by now if PMB was honest in his anti corruption war.

anyway, they should all expose themselves. the NAss & Executives are partners in corruption, but as it is said, '...there is no honour among thieves (corrupt people)".

This is a disgusting trend. Filing a matter in court does not apply as a stay on a matter until the courts have granted such a prayer before it or given a ruling to that effect. I don't know how it has become that the moment a person files processes that has not even been given a hearing date, he suddenly refuses to honour the summons of the Senate. Will he also stop signing off and using money as SGF since he's being accused of fraud? Has his office stopped handling funds for IDP which is d crux of the issue with the Senate?

Aren't both the judiciary and legislature supposed to be bound by the same constitution?

If so, then what makes it easy for them to seem to work at cross purposes?

Before you tell me "separation of powers", this seems more a case of playing one arm against the other.

Going to court to challenge a legitimate invitation?

Hmmm so senate confirmed him when and at what point? For ur info it is the veto power the president appoint SGF and the custom boss without without confirmation by the senate. That's what the law says.

The whole thing is a pay back from the executive. Does the Senate has power to enforce law? it only makes law. Why is senate saying Hameed Ali must wear uniform? In a saner clime they would have approached the court, coz they make only laws but cant neither enforce any law(Executive enforce law) nor interprete any law(Court does that).

Is Saraki, Dino and his gang of thieves parading as lawmakers not disgusting? Or is it the Presidency or the Judiciary, please tell what arm or aspect of Nigeria is not disgusting?
All the players in the different arms of government are all thieves and should be left to play their thieving game. Saraki and his gang are not the head of the government, they cannot constitute a nuisance to others after stealing the country blind and sitting tight on their sits, that house is a house of ridicule and has lost legitimacy...he who must summon another or call for equity must have clean hands. This is a welcome trend, let the thieves fight themselves, we the masses will finish off the survivor's at the apt time.
