Politics › Calling Buhari Major General Is Abuse Of Press Freedom - Lai Mohammed by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:31pm On Apr 12, 2022
Nigeria’s Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, has said that it is an ‘abuse of press freedom’ to address President Muhammadu Buhari by his military title in a democratic setting.

Mohammed stated this on Tuesday when members of the International Press Institute (IPI), Nigeria chapter, paid a courtesy call on him at his office in Abuja.

The minister was reacting to the classification of Nigeria as a country that is antagonistic to journalists in the 2021 World Press Freedom Index. The country had ranked 120 out of the 180 countries graded.

Reporters Without Borders, which publishes the World Press Freedom Index annually, had stated “Nigeria is now one of West Africa’s most dangerous and difficult countries for journalists, who are often spied on, attacked, arbitrarily arrested or even killed.”

The IPI Nigeria President, Muskilu Mojeed, had during the visit cited Nigeria’s ranking on the index as an example of the country’s low rating in press freedom.

But Mohammed rejected the rating and claimed that the Nigerian media remains the most vibrant and freest in the world.

https://thewhistler.ng/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Lai-Mohammed-FG-Rejects-2021-World-Press-Freedom-Index-says-Nigerian-Press-Among-Worlds-Freest-768x415.jpg
Information Minister, Lai Mohammed receives executive members of the Nigerian chapter of the International Press Institute (IPI).

He referred to the decision of a national daily to address President Buhari by his military title as evidence that the current government is free with the media.

“I disagree with your assessment of press freedom under this government. Honestly, at times when I read what the media write here about Nigeria, I begin to wonder whether I live in the same country that they are writing about.

“I disagree vehemently with the assessment because it is unfounded and has no scientific basis. I have been the Minister (of Information and Culture) since 2015 so I know the state of press freedom in Nigeria,” he said.

According to the minister, Nigerians have misinterpreted the government’s efforts to ensure responsible use of social media as an attempt to gag the press.

“After all, this must be one of the very few countries in the world where a section of the media can refuse to recognize popular sovereignty, or how does one describe a situation in which a President who was duly elected by millions of Nigeria is willfully stripped of that title, President, and then cheekily cloaked in the garb of a dictator by playing up his military title? Despite that abuse of press freedom, those doing that have continued to practice their profession without hindrance.

“Ours must also be one of the few countries in the world where a reputable medium will report fake news and, when called out, will not retract or apologize,” he said.

Mohammed added that the media can effectively play its role without acting as political opposition.

He further charged IPI Nigeria to take seriously the issues of ethics, credibility, and fake news, amongst others.

“For example, on the issue of ethics, is it part of the ethics of journalism for a media organization to function like an opposition party, seeing nothing good in the government of the day and only reporting bad news?” Mohammed queried.

Politics › Northern Elders Asks Buhari To Resign, Gives Reasons by BeeBeeOoh(op): 7:49pm On Apr 12, 2022
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has demanded the immediate resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari, over the raging killings across the country, especially in the north.

The Director, Publicity and Advocacy of NEF, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, made the call on Tuesday.

“The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari does not appear to have answers to the challenges of security to which we are exposed. We cannot continue to live and die under the dictates of killers, kidnappers, rapists and sundry criminal groups that have deprived us of our rights to live in peace and security.

“Our constitution has provisions for leaders to voluntarily step down if they are challenged by personal reasons or they prove incapable of leading.

“It is now time for President Buhari to seriously consider that option, since his leadership has proved spectacularly incapable of providing security over Nigerians. Our Forum is aware of the weight of this advice, and it is also aware that we cannot continue to live under these conditions until 2023 when President Buhari’s term ends,” Baba-Ahmed said.

He said the forum made the recommendation with the highest sense of responsibility, and expressed hope there are enough Nigerians who enjoy the confidence of President Buhari to advise him to consider resigning.

He lamented that killings and assaults on communities have now become daily features of lives of all Nigerians, as traveling anywhere is now risky, and the option of staying put does not make anyone safer.

He said, “Killers and other criminals appear to have sensed a paralyzing vacuum at the highest levels of leadership, and they grow more confident and acquire more competence in subverting the State and our security.

“Nigerians have shed enough tears and blood without appropriate response from those with responsibilities to protect us.”

He advised politicians aspiring to lead the nation to weigh their capacities and commitments and challenges of leadership very carefully.

The northern elder’s spokesperson said that leading Nigeria out of its current state and placing it firmly on the path of rediscovery is not an all-comers affair and that Nigerians will exercise greater levels of discretion in deciding who they can trust in future.

“There are also groups who deepen the concerns of Nigerians over the possibility of a safe and free campaigning and conduct of the 2023 elections. Comments which threaten those parochial political demands must be met, rather than negotiated or processed through the democratic process threaten all Nigerians and hint at a wider space for violence in the run-up to the elections, and after it.

“These comments are unbecoming of elders, and they detract from the genuine and difficult search for good leaders who will be totally committed to one nation with very serious challenges.

“Our Forum re-commits to engagements and dialogue with all politicians and groups to seek the lowering of tensions and stresses which represent threats to our democratic process. The Forum condoles families who have lost members, and prays with those whose members are kidnapped that they will be re-united without further delay.”

Politics › Kaduna: Arrested People In Viral Video Were Herders Mistaken For Bandits - Polic by BeeBeeOoh(op):
The military and police have clarified that the arrested people in a video, which went viral on social media at the weekend, were herders mistaken for bandits who attacked Kakura community in Chikun local government area of Kaduna State.

The security officials, who made the clarification during a peace meeting between the leadership of Gbagyi and Fulani communities of Kakura, said investigations have revealed that, the people seen in the video were members of the herders settlement mistaken for bandits that went to Kakura and apprehended by the vigilante men.

The meeting had in attendance the State Commissioner of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, Chikun local government chairman, Engr. Salasi Musa, member representing Chikun Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Ayuba Chawaza, District Head of Kujama, Stephen Ibrahim, and the Commanding Officer, 312 Artillery Regiment, Lt. Col. D.O Igwilo.

Speaking at the meeting, which held at the Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs in Kaduna, the State Commissioner of Police, Yekini Ayoku, said both the Gbagyi and Fulani communities of Kakura were victims of the Saturday bandits’ attack.

The CP said: “When we saw the video, we swung into action and called for an emergency meeting between the Gbagyi and Fulani communities of Kakura. And from our investigation, we discovered what happened was that, bandits attacked Kakura community and killed the younger brother of the village leader, Isiaku Karfe.

“The same bandits attacked a nearby Fulani settlement and within the same area, rustled their cattle. So, the vigilante of the Kakura community where the village head brother was killed, went in search of the bandits that attacked them, while the Fulani also went in search of their rustled cattle.”

Ayoku added: “While in the forest, the two sides clashed. In the process, three of the Fulani were killed and a number of others were injured. The information got to the military detachment in the area and they went for rescue and they took the dead and the injured to the hospital. Presently, the injured are now being treated at 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital.

“So, these people taken to the hospital are not bandits, but rather, from the narrations of the both sides, it was discovered that, it was a case of mistaken identity.

“So, what we have done here is to bring the two communities together, then the local government chairman, House Assembly member, the District Head and Head of the Fulani community have been asked to go back and ensure peace among the communities.”

Both the District Head of Kujama, Stephen Ibrahim and Ardo (Head of Fulani Community) in Chikun local government area corroborated the Commissioner of Police’s submission and assured that, they will go back to the community level and work for peace of the area.

Politics › IPOB To Start Enforcing Ban On Cow Meat, Open Grazing April 27th by BeeBeeOoh(op): 7:25pm On Apr 11, 2022
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced that it will commence the enforcement of a ban on open grazing in the South-East region from April 27, 2022.

IPOB in a statement on Monday signed by Emma Powerful explained that from the said date, those who are into cow business in the South-East must have a ranch, and properly mark their cows.

The pro-Biafra group noted that ranches must be properly marked with an identifiable name or symbol to avoid sanctions.

According to IPOB “We the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the command and leadership of our great leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, wish to make the following clarifications concerning the ban on the movement of Fulani cows which will take effect from the April 27, 2022.

“From April 27, 2022, we shall commence the enforcement of the ban on open grazing which has since been pronounced by South-East governors and passed into law by many states in Biafraland but the Nigerian security agencies have failed to enforce them. Thus, from the said date, no cows should be seen roaming the streets of Biafraland.

“From April 27, 2022, anybody interested in cow business anywhere in Biafraland, must have a ranch and properly mark the cows. Cows seen outside ranches with effect from this date shall be treated as contraband products. Owners of such cows should blame themselves.

“Owners of cows and ranches should properly mark them with their ranch name or symbol for easy identification.

“The above measures have become necessary to stop the senseless and wanton killings in our land by Fulani jihadists masquerading as herdsmen. We want to stop the incessant invasion of our communities and raping of our mothers and sisters by Fulani herdsmen. Enough is enough!

“Our action is not targeted against any tribe. We are only taking this measure as a necessity for self-preservation.

“Igbo people alone in Biafraland spent more than N3 trillion every year on cows. We, therefore, want to stop using our money to finance the genocidal attacks on our people by Fulani herdsmen. Let them keep their cows so that we may have our lives.

“We want our people to breed native cows on our land and also put them in a ranch. We won’t tolerate the wandering of cattle again in our land.”

Recall that IPOB had in October 2021, announced a ban on the rearing and consumption of cows in the South-East region.

Politics › Ibrahim Almustapha: Nigeria's Security Challenges Are Signs Of Greatness by BeeBeeOoh(op): 12:31pm On Apr 11, 2022
“Nigerians love APC, they love Buhari and am sure you must have seen the tremendous progress made in terms of infrastructure since the regime came in 2015," the lawmaker says.

Ibrahim Almustapha (APC-Sokoto) says Nigeria’s current challenges are signs of greatness, saying the country has the capacity to surmount them.
Mr Almustapha who represents Wurno/Rabah Federal Constituency of Sokoto State at the National Assembly, said this when he spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto on Sunday.

“To me, I see most of these challenges, especially the security challenges facing the country as a sign of greatness, many great nations passed through lots of challenges on their way to greatness.

“I believe the same situation is applicable to Nigeria and once we are able to overcome them, Nigeria will certainly become great in every aspect of human endeavours, in terms of economy, infrastructure, power and all others.

“What we need is to come together as a nation with sincerity, towards tackling the challenges. Nigerians who are fond of celebrating bad news and negativity should stop.

“Those supplying information and logistics to bandits and armed robbers should stop and those entrusted with the task of fighting them should be more sincere,” he said.
Mr Almustapha said although Nigeria has recorded some achievements in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-east, much needed to be done.

“I think the North-east has witnessed relative peace for some time now, certainly, the situation is not the way it was in 2015 when the All Progressives Congress (APC) came into power,” he said.

He expressed optimism that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government would succeed in its bid to tackle the security challenges bevelling the country.

Mr Almustapha said that the new leadership of the APC would reposition the party ahead of the 2023 general elections.
“When you talk about discipline, determination and uprightness, I think you are talking about the new APC executives led by Sen. Abdullahi Adamu,” he said.

Mr Almustapha said the APC would win the 2023 general elections without much challenge.

“Nigerians love APC, they love Buhari and am sure you must have seen the tremendous progress made in terms of infrastructure since the regime came in 2015.

“If I should ask you which other political party exists in the country with that kind of credential certainly, you will reply that there’s none.

“In terms of development, no party can match the APC, even with the numerous economic, social, security and even COVID-19 challenges, the APC administration has done well.

“Just take a look around Nigeria, you will see massive infrastructure development everywhere, there is also massive agricultural intervention everywhere,” he said.

Mr Almustapha added: “I think the APC has performed very well, especially when compared with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) years.

“I can comfortably tell you that the APC will win the 2023 general elections with landslide victory.”

He expressed optimism that the party would remain united ahead of the general elections.

“Are you not surprised that we conducted our National Convention successfully in spite of all odds.

”We had about eight chairmanship aspirants and all of them came together and agreed to step down for Adamu, the same scenario would repeat itself during the primary election and it will be hitch-free.

“We in APC are out for the goodness of Nigeria, we are not out to pursue individual interest, ours is collective interest of Nigeria, we have to agree and disagree on issues.

“Our election at the convention was mostly based on consensus, this is exactly what will be repeated at the primaries and we will forge ahead as a party,” the lawmaker said.

Politics › Sell Nigeria Instead Of Taking N6 Trillion Fresh Loan - Timi Frank Tells Buhari by BeeBeeOoh(op): 10:54pm On Apr 10, 2022
A former deputy national publicity secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, on Sunday, condemned plans by President Muhammadu Buhari to borrow another N6trillion.

According to the political activist, it was better for President Buhari to sell Nigeria as an entity than to continue to take loans thereby perpetually enslaving Nigerians.

LEADERSHIP reports that the fresh loan, according to Buhari in a letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, was meant to finance deficit in the 2022 budget.

Buhari’s letter reads in part: “As you are aware Mr Speaker, the new development both in the global economy as well as the domestic economy has necessitated the revision of the 2022 fiscal framework on which the 2022 budget was based.

“The total budget deficit is projected to increase from N965.42 billion to N7.35 trillion representing 3.99 percent of the GDP.

“The increment of the deficit will be financed by new borrowings from the domestic market.”

Frank, who is the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) Ambassador to East Africa and Middle East, in a statement in Abuja, described the move to further amass debt by the Buhari government as “unconscionable, immoral, anti-people and anti-God.”

He insisted that it was better for Buhari to sell Nigeria and share the money among APC loyalists since his appetite for both domestic and foreign borrowings appears insatiable.

He urged Buhari to know that poverty in Nigeria has grown in equal proportion with loans already taken as the true intention for the debt has not been development but to be shared through corrupt deals.

He lamented that despite the huge amount of loans already amassed by the Buhari regime the country was still ranked the poverty capital of the world, a clear evidence that the loans never benefited the poor masses or the completely knocked down nation’s economy.

“How can we have a President that only knows how to borrow with no tangible project to show for what has been borrowed.

“Nigeria today is beset by insecurity but Buhari cannot account for over N10trillion defence budget since 2015.

“Nigeria was fortunate to secure debt forgiveness and cancellation during the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo. But Buhari has since acquired over ten times the value of Nigeria’s debt that was written off by the Bretton Woods Institutions, that is, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“It is unfortunate that the Buhari’s regime has turned out to be the worst government since this democratic dispensation in view of its attempt to completely subjugate Nigerians to poverty by making them slaves to creditor nations and institutions across the world.

“As the 2023 general elections draw near, Nigerians are being presented with an opportunity to vote in better and credible political leaders that would help free the country from the debt burden foisted on it by the Buhari-led APC regime, and ensure genuine development of the country,” Frank stated.
