Politics › Accidental Bomb In IDP: Air Force Bombs Killed 52 & Injured 120 - MSF Reports by BeeBeeOoh(op): 7:50pm On Jan 17, 2017
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), an international humanitarian non-governmental organisation best known for its life-saving projects in war-torn regions, says at least 120 people were wounded and 52 killed on Tuesday when a Nigerian air force jet accidentally bombed an internally displaced persons camp in Rann, Borno state.

Earlier, Lucky Irabor, theatre commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, had said that after receiving a report about the gathering of Boko Haram terrorists around Kala Balge area of Maiduguri, he directed the air component of the operation to “address the problem”.

Unfortunately, the strike was conducted but it turned out that other civilians were somewhere around the area and they were affected,” Irabor said.

“So far, it is a little bit disturbing; death has occurred. There are casualties; there were deaths and injuries but on the actual number of casualties, we would get back to you later.

“I am yet to get the number of casualties of civilians killed, but two soldiers were also affected.”

Responding, MSF, also known as Doctors Without Borders, decried the “large-scale attack” and implored the military to immediately facilitate the evacuation and treatment of survivors.

“This large-scale attack on vulnerable people who have already fled from extreme violence is shocking and unacceptable,” Jean-Clément Cabrol, MSF director of operations, said.

“The safety of civilians must be respected. We are urgently calling on all parties to ensure the facilitation of medical evacuations by air or road for survivors who are in need of emergency care.”

MSF said its medical teams were “currently providing first aid to 120 wounded patients in its facility in Rann” while its medical and surgical teams in the region were “preparing to treat evacuated patients”.

MSF first started working in Nigeria in 1971, and is one of the few organisations still able to operate in hard-to-reach areas of the country.

TheCable’s visit to the north-east in November established that MSF is the humanitarian organisation whose work is most critical to the survival of malnourished children in Borno and other victims of insurgency.

Politics › Southern Kaduna Killings: Reps Summon Service Chiefs, Police IG... by BeeBeeOoh(op): 6:57pm On Jan 17, 2017
The House of Representatives has summoned the Chief of Defence Staff, Gabriel Olonishakin and three service chiefs to brief it on the security situation in the Southern Kaduna.

The House also invited the Inspector General of Police alongside with the service chiefs in Abuja on Tuesday.

It urged President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the Nigerian Armed Forces and the Police to deal decisively with perpetrators of the killings in Southern Kaduna.

The House advised security agencies to be more proactive in identifying the exact areas of the attacks and carried out a comprehensive security mapping on attackers to combat the menace.

The resolutions followed a motion by Rep. Gideon Gwani (PDP-Kaduna) which was unanimously adopted by members through a voice vote.

In his lead debate, Gwani noted with grief the violent terror attacks of Jan. 6 to Jan.9, at Tachirak, Adu and Tsonje villages of Kagoro town in Kaura Federal Constituency of Southern Kaduna.

According to him, the attacks lead to the death of 13 people in spite of 24 hours imposition of curfew and the presence of the armed forces and the police.

Gwani recalled that the resolution in which the House urged the Executive Arm to set up a committee to comprehensively address the incessant killings in Kaduna State and other parts of the country had not been complied with.

Lawmakers during the debate condemned the violent terror attacks and sympathised with the traumatised victims and observed a minute silence in honour of the victims.

Contributing to the motion, Rep. Baballe Bashir (APC-Kano) said that the killings in Kaduna state started over 37 years ago, but regretted that none of the perpetrators had been brought to book.

“The Southern Kaduna killings have been on for over 37 years, it happened in Kafanchan, Zangon-Kataf, Godogodo, Gidan Waya among others, no perpetrator has been arrested, prosecuted and punished,’’ he said.

Bashir said that some persons somewhere were benefiting from the crisis and that it was high time they were identified and punished appropriately.

He added that unfortunately religious bodies and the media were also worsening the situation through inflammatory remarks and biased reports.

Many other lawmakers equally condemned the sustained killings in the area and other parts of the country and demanded that a lasting solution be found.

The Speaker, Mr Yakubu Dogara, before ruling on the motion commended measures so far taken by President Muhammadu Buhari to stop the killings and destruction of property in Southern Kaduna.

After an extensive debate, the House agreed to invite security chiefs with a view to getting first-hand information on the challenges and prospects of an immediate end to recurring killings and destructions. (NAN)

Politics › Forget 2019, Nigerians Are Hungry - Atiku by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:42am On Jan 17, 2017
....Why APC govt has not performed, by senators, NWC

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar yesterday said that any thought about the 2019 general elections should be forgotten.

His reason: There is hunger in the country. Atiku’s statement is a veiled reference to the general state of hardship in the country and the poor performance of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the economy.

That was even as the leadership of the APC and the Senate Caucus of the party admitted that the multiple crises that have rocked the party have hampered its intended delivery of democratic dividends to Nigerians.

Atiku, who was on a condolence visit to Niger State over the death of a former governor of the state, Alhaji Abdulkadir Kure, was reacting to questions from journalists on his preparations for the 2019 presidency. Atiku was in the state with the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, among others.

When asked how he is preparing for the 2019 elections, Atiku said: “Who is talking about 2019 now, when there is no food on the table? People are hungry.”

Earlier, while eulogising the late Kure, Atiku said: “He was a friend, a colleague, a brother, a compatriot. His death is a personal loss to me. The kind of pious life he lived will definitely earn him paradise.”

Saraki, while speaking on insurgency, said that “fighting terrorism is not a thing that can end in one point, but the government will restore life back to the north eastern part of the country.”

Also yesterday, the Senate Caucus and the APC NWC agreed that the inhibition on the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government to deliver good governance was due to wrong leadership in the Senate. The party leadership and the APC Senate Caucus, however, agreed on a smooth running of government with the change of the Senate Leader last week.

The APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, charged the APC senators to take full charge of the Senate. Oyegun gave the charge when the APC Senate caucus, led by its Leader, Senator Ahmed Lawan, visited the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja. In the entourage of the Senate Leader were the Chief Whip of the Senate, Prof. Sola Adeyeye; Deputy Senate Leader, Bala Ibn Na’Allah and Deputy Chief Whip, Francis Alimikhena.

The APC national chairman also stated that the removal of the former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume was not about wrongdoing on his part.

According to him, Ndume’s removal was to strengthen the Senate and strengthen Buhari’s government. Oyegun and Lawan, who took turn to make their remarks, were of the opinion that with the present leadership of the Senate, Nigerians would start to enjoy dividends of democracy. Oyegun said: “What is important is that the APC caucus in the Senate is now a united body.

The APC caucus in the Senate will now take full charge, full control and full dominance as the governing party and the majority party in the Senate.

“Today, we have a united Senate and a Senate that is firmly under the control of the APC. That will only mean one thing and that is the fact that we all recognise the challenge before this nation. We all recognise the fact that we must all line up behind Mr. President.

“This is a critical year and we have a beautiful budget. The Senate is united, the party is strengthened and consolidated and so, it is time to put our weight behind the executive to show that the project is fully and faithfully executed so that the people of this nation will begin to see the change that we promised.

It is not yet Uhuru because there is still a lot of hard work for the party and the Senate as well as the executive. But united and together without the distractions of the past, we can now look at the nation and said yes, 2017 will be a year when the major problems in this nation will start to be put behind us.”

Lawan thanked the leadership of the party for making the change in the Senate leadership possible, as he promised that it would bring about positive change in governance.

He said: “After the setbacks and the little crisis that we had with the emergence of the leadership of the Senate, our party decided that the remaining principal offices should be given to certain senators in order to have a united Senate, especially the APC caucus.

“We believe that the trio of the National Assembly, the presidency and the party would synergize to ensure that we are always working at the same page.

The party is a platform for both the President and National Assembly members and therefore we should take this opportunity, work on it, solidify it and ensure that the time we have lost because of some crises is recovered and we do not have the luxury of wasting more time. ”

In fact, Nigerians will be so eager to see what happens in the next few months now that we have a united National Assembly, the presidency and the party. We should be able to perform to the expectations of Nigerians with the limits of the economy.

“I believe that as a Senate leader, we will work towards consolidating the relationship between the Senate caucus, party and presidency.”

Politics › Fg Begs SSANU, NASU, NAT To Suspend Strike.. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 12:00am On Jan 17, 2017
ABUJA—THE Federal Government, has pleaded with the three striking non teaching staff unions in the universities that embarked on strike yesterday to suspend their action in the interest of the nation.

The three University unions, the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, Non Academic Staff Union and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, had yesterday, started a five-day warning strike over the inability of the Federal Government to implement the 2009 Agreements with the unions.

The Joint Action Committee, JAC, of the unions in a statement in Abuja, stated that the warning strike had become necessary to make government take necessary action to fully implement the 2009 FGN/Non-Teaching Staff Unions Agreements it freely entered into with the unions.

But the Federal Government through the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige in a statement appealed to the three unions to suspend their action in the interest of the nation.

Ngige said, “I wish to assure that the Federal Government is ready and willing to fully dialogue with the members of these Trade Unions, operating under the umbrella of Joint Action Committee. Government has already opened an unhindered channel of communication with all stakeholders and shall maintain this.

Stakeholders meeting

“Yesterday, I convened a meeting of all stakeholders in the dispute for us to ventilate all issues and reach amicable settlement. Unfortunately, the Trade Unions requested for a different date and the meeting now re-scheduled for January 18, 2017. The Federal Government therefore, expects that the Trade Unions should suspend the strike before the re-scheduled meeting to make way for untrammeled discussions.

“It is important for Trade Unions to embrace dialogue in the pursuit and attainment of the economic and social interests of their members anchored on equity and natural justice.

“I hence thought it necessary to remind the Trade Unions that there is nothing like a “warning strike” in our National Industrial Relations System, NIRS, a strike is a strike and is subject to all the rules governing strike in the world of work.

“Accordingly, the provisions of Section 43 of the Trade Disputes Act, CAP. T8, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, LFN, 2004, will apply regarding the law of “no work no pay by workers/employees notwithstanding any other circumstances in any section of the Act.

“Once more, I wish to appeal to the trade unions to embrace dialogue as the Federal Government is fully committed to peaceful resolution of what the unions termed “Full Implementation of 2009 FGN/Non – Teaching Staff Union’s Agreement.”

Politics › UNIMAID Attack Is An Attack On Education - Atiku by BeeBeeOoh(op): 7:37pm On Jan 16, 2017
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described as a dangerous development Monday’s suicide bomb attack on a mosque at the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID).
He said the attack on the UNIMAID mosque was particularly worrisome, having come at a time when the terrorist group was clearly degraded.

“We cannot afford to be complacent now or in the future,” he also said in a statement released by his media office in Abuja.

The chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who condemned the attack, said the attack on UNIMAID was not just about a bomb exploding in a mosque, but that education in the northeast is under attack.

He said Nigeria had not experienced any such act of terrorism perpetrated within a school after the February 2014 attack on the Federal Government College, Buni Yadi, in which 40 male students were murdered, as well as the April 2014 kidnapping of over 200 girls from their school dormitory in Chibok.

The Turakin Adamawa also stated that a lack of education was one of the most alarming threats to security in the northeast.

Many of the terrorists, he added, have been shown to be people who have either never had the chance or ability to read the Koran for themselves and interpret the tenets of Islam beyond the false teachings of their terrorist commanders.

“A sound education will provide our youth with the ability to analyse and make informed decisions, an opportunity that many young people in the northeast of Nigeria do not have at present, making it easy for false teachers to control them,” he also said.

Atiku, who condoled with the families of the deceased, students and staff of UNIMAID over the loss of lives, also prayed for the quick recovery of the injured.

Politics › UNIMAID Attack: Terrorism Will Never Triumph Over Peace-Loving Nigerians- Buhari by BeeBeeOoh(op): 12:25pm On Jan 16, 2017
President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday reassured communities in Borno and others in the North Eastern part of the country that his administration would continue to ensure that terrorism never triumphs over peace-loving Nigerians.

He condemned the terrorist attack of a mosque in the University of Maiduguri, saying attack on a place of worship and Ivory Tower showed that the perpetrators lacked true understanding of Islam.

This was in a statement made available to journalists by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina.

The President said terrorism acts were punishable before God and the nation’s law.

The statement reads, “President Muhammadu Buhari strongly condemns the terrorist attack Monday morning at a mosque in the University of Maiduguri.

“The President expresses sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the university community, families of the victims and the government and people of Borno State.

“President Buhari believes that this appalling attack on a revered place of worship and Ivory Tower shows that the perpetrators have no true understanding of Islam, adding that their despicable acts of terrorism are cowardly, criminal, unjustifiable and punishable before God Almighty and the laws of the land.

“The President reassures communities in Borno and others in the North eastern part of the country that his administration will continue to ensure that terrorism never triumphs over peace-loving Nigerians.

“He reaffirms the need for Nigerians to remain more vigilant even as the security agencies continue to use all means at their disposal to combat the remnants of insurgents and their sponsors.

“President Buhari wishes those injured in the attack a speedy and full recovery, and comfort for families of the dead.”
