The police command in Plateau state reportedly arrested three persons suspected to be members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect on Tuesday, July 14, around Terminus area in Jos, the state capital. The three suspects were said to be moving suspiciously around the market area and the traders alerted the police officers stationed at the area, Daily Trust reports. They were apprehended and taken to the C. Division around Masalacin Jumma’a street. According to Mohammed Auwal, a vendor in the area, the traders noticed the suspicious movement of the suspects after they parked and came down from a tinted Honda Accord vehicle and then went in different directions. Zakari Ya’u Adamu, chairman of shoe sellers at the market said: “We divided ourselves into groups and went after them. At the beginning, they were trying to resist our interrogation, but when they noticed that some youths were ready to attack them, they cooperated. One of them was found with five sim cards while the other was found with four.” He explained that one of the suspects upon interrogation claimed to be an aide to the sacked chairman of Qua’an Pan local government area but when they got to the Terminus police station and they all wrote contradictory statements. Adamu said the traders assigned youths to monitor people around the market following the renewed spate of attacks in the country. Boko Haram has intensified its attacks especially in the Northern part of the country. Yesterday, an attempt to attack Jos area (Jos South LGA), was averted. An office clerk, who pleaded anonymity, disclosed that she had spotted a big envelope behind the door of her boss, with some electrical installations inside and she immediately alerted security agents. http://www.naij.com/489871-traders-catch-3-boko-haram-suspects-in-jos.html |

•Motorists, commuters send SOS to Wike At Rumuagholu, Obiakpo Local Government Area of Rivers State, the people are sad and angry. And the reason? There is total lack of basic amenities in the area. Chief among the challenges confronting the people is the problem of bad roads. According to residents, all the access roads within the community have suffered total neglect for long. As a result, the roads have all dilapidated completely and become impassable, with businesses in the area now in ruins. Kingsley Ihunwo, a graduate of Mechanical Engineering from Rivers State University of Science and Technology, is one of the taxi drivers that ply the Rumuagholu-Rumuokoro route. He told Daily Sun that he went into taxi business out of frustration after failing to secure a job. He spoke on the daily hassles of plying the roads of Rumuagholu. “Due to the poor condition of Rumuagholu-Rumuokoro Road, we no longer go through the Rumuagholu Road. We now go through the East-West Road to boycott Rumuagholu Road. Also, we can no longer access Rasa. That place is terribly bad. Rasa is the last bus stop where we make a U-turn back to this Rumuokoro roundabout. Even Obiri-Ikwere, where we were managing, is equally bad. “Please, we’re using this medium to beg the Rivers State government to help us repair this road and other roads around this area. In the whole of this area, apart from the East-West Road, which is a federal road, all the roads are in a very horrible state. They should fix these roads to enable us do our businesses,” he pleaded. He disclosed that a drive from Rumuokoro to Rasa, which should not take more than five minutes, now takes about 30 minutes. He regretted that the bulk of their income is usually spent on car maintenance. A resident of the area, Mrs. Pauline Iheagwam relayed her daily experience while taking her children to and from school. Her words: “In this Rumuagholu community, there are four roads. But all are in shambles. Of course, you have seen what Rumuagholu Road looks like. Sometime last year, government came and poured red mud on some portions of it, and they then abandoned it. The road turned out to be a nightmare. “The challenges we’ve been having on this road is so terrible. All the three roads that lead outside Rumuagholu are all bad. The road from T-Junction to Nkpolu is bad. The one from Rasa to Obiri-Ikwere is terrible. The one from Rumuagholu to Rumuokoro is even the worst. Those of us in Rumuagholu have been suffering so much. These roads have become totally dilapidated and the impact is telling greatly on us. “For instance, as a mother, it has not been easy taking my children to and from school. Passing these roads, especially, Rumuagholu Road even in one day is a terrible experience that nobody would want to have. It’s like going through hell. Most times you come home tired and fagged out, unable to carry out your duties as a wife and mother.” She also spoke on the impact of the bad roads on their vehicles. Most people have parked their cars at home. They prefer using commercial vehicles now. Virtually every day, you go visit a mechanic. It is terrible. It is bad. I wish and pray that through this medium, the government would sympathise with us. We’re really calling on them. We’re suffering so much.” A mobile phone and accessories technician, whose outlet is on the Rumuagholu Road, Mr. Eze Egeonu described the roads as an environmental mess. He said the road has been a major setback for businessmen in the area. He also said the state of the road scares away prospective customers, especially those who come in their vehicles. “When they think about the condition of the road, it discourages them. We earn a living here by the grace of God,” he stated. “We expected the government of former Governor Rotimi Amechi to do something about it, but they abandoned us to suffer. But now, we are calling on Wike to come and repair this Rumuagholu and other bad roads for us. He should save us from this environmental mess. “We are not asking for too much. Our leaders love violence and that is why violence currently prevails across the nation. And the fraction of people causing them sleepless nights now is just five percent of idle youths and persons. They can then imagine when the majority of jobless persons and youths in this country take to crime or take up arms.” Kareem Abiodun, a tricycle driver, said the level of decay on the roads in the community has left the people dumb. “All the money we make, we spend in repairing our keke (tricycles). And we have to maintain our families and ourselves. It is very difficult, as the mechanic eats almost all the money we make on daily bias. At the end of the day, you end up borrowing more money. You hustle, yet you’re a liability to your wife instead of being the caretaker. It is annoying. “So, we’re calling on the new governor, Chief Wike, to save us from this horror that we go through on daily basis and do the road for us. This raining season, it has become hell. From here to T-junction is less than five or ten minutes. But now, we spend between 25 and 30 minutes burning away fuel. So, Governor Wike should intervene now and help us do the road.” Relieving her experiences, Miss Emmanuela Iheagwam said she was always happy each day after returning from school. “Going to school is supposed to be fun. But due to the bad condition of our roads, most times, going to school was stressful and hell, because the roads are very bad, I used to ride in the school bus. Unfortunately, the school bus stopped coming to this community. I had to start going on my own. Often, the tricycle that we board will sink and splash mud on people. People do fall off the keke when it swerves. Even the stagnant water flows into the tricycles because the gullies on these roads are quite deep. Presently, the roads have gone even worse. Most times, we wear scandals or slippers to school. I thank God I was able to overcome. “We are pleading with the Rivers State government to help us fix this Rumuagholu road, up to Nkpolu area. Everywhere is just terrible. It’s a nightmare passing any of the roads here when it rains. Everywhere is usually flooded, as sand and refuse have blocked the drainages. Many parents do not allow their children go to school when it rains.” Kazeem Precious, Gift John and Ebiere Tamuno, all pupils of Brightest and Best Academy, Wosi Street, also sang songs of agony. And just while some of the affected people were baring their minds on the state of the roads, an elderly woman slipped and fell inside the stagnant waters. After being helped to her feet, she poured out her frustrations. “In this Nigeria, we have suffered. How can a country be generating so much money from God’s vast endowments, yet the roads are in such a bad state? Look at the roads. Rumuagholu Road and virtually all roads in this community have been in impassable state for several years now. We are suffering, but nobody cares." http://sunnewsonline.com/new/in-rivers-community-bad-roads-torment-residents/

The National leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu has denied the alleged cold war between him and President Muhammadu Buhari. The former Lagos Stab]te governor affirmed that he was not on war-path with Buhari as widely reported by the media. Tinubu said he remained loyal to Buhari as the nation’s number one citizen. The APC chieftain made this clarification while speaking with State House Correspondents shortly after breaking Ramadan fast with President Buhari at the new Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa on Tuesday. “I have no demands. If you understand what party politics and leadership is all about, it is about loyalty and commitment to the values which the leadership believes in. “I believe in what the president believes in, I respect him and I stand firmly loyal to his cause. So you can go to any length of speculation that you might want, I have not responded to all of that because I understand the president and the president understands me clearly.” Speaking on the crisis rocking the National Assembly, Tinubu said although it was a very sensitive issue, he would however, support the stance of the President on the matter. “That is an area where I am very cautious of my position and my utterances. I still want to keep my side of the interpretation or analysis to be able to achieve a resolution of the matter as quickly as possible. I am backing what the president has carefully enumerated and articulated to the party. The party is supreme. The party must have disciplined leadership and followers. “The party’s process must be respected because that is the confidence and the trust of the people. However, in every environment, we should have conflict, that is politics and conflict resolution mechanism would be applied to resolve all the problems; so we are there. There is honour in every struggle and every competition, there must be honour in victory too”. http://dailypost.ng/2015/07/15/i-have-no-demands-from-buhari-i-am-loyal-to-him-tinubu/ |

FIDELIS SORIWEI, ABUJA Leave a Comment In what turned out to be a valedictory session with officers and men of the Nigerian Army, the former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Kenneth Minimah, has advised Nigerians to be security conscious and be vigilant in view of the recent attacks on soft targets and civil populace by Boko Haram terrorists. Minimah said the leadership of the Army was disposed to the concept of total defence, which would involve the entire citizenry in the defence of the country. He urged the citizens to show the expected level of alertness in order not to fall victim to the evil acts of the terrorists, who according to him, are out to exploit every opportunity to smear the government. Minimah made the comment while speaking with journalists shortly after declaring open the Chief of Army Staff Second Conference in Abuja on Monday. He said, “The thinking in the military intellectual architecture; it suggests and proposes total defence. Total defence is the defence by all citizens of their fatherland. “And this can be emphasised now and propagated that all citizens must be aware and must be conscious and must be alert to whatever happens around them. “If you are in a bus, watch out what is happening inside the bus. If you are in any gathering, avoid spontaneous gatherings; everybody should be conscious of one another. “That is what we have to do so that we don’t fall victim too early, because this terrorists, it is what they think they can use to smear the government of the day that they think they are doing." http://www.punchng.com/news/ex-army-chief-urges-vigilance-in-anti-terror-war/ |

Lawrence Nomanyagbon Anini, Nigeria’s most notorious armed robber, was born sometime in 1960. He terrorised the old Bendel State, especially its capital, Benin City in the 1980s. By 1986, his robbery exploits had reached such a terrible level that it became a national issue. He operated along with his lieutenant, Monday Osunbor, and others. However, one striking feature in the Anini reign of terror was police complicity. It was soon discovered that the Anini gang had insiders within the Police hierarchy George Iyamu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, was their arrowhead. The complicity of the police is believed to have enhanced Anini’s reign of terror in 1986. Early that year, two members of his gang were prosecuted over an earlier under-the-table ‘agreement’ with the Police to destroy evidence against the gang members. The incident, and Anini’s view of Police betrayal, is believed to have spurred retaliatory actions by Anini. In August, 1986, a bank robbery linked to Anini was reported in which a police officer and others were killed. That same month, two officers on duty were shot at a barricade while trying to stop Anini’s car. During a span of three months, he was known to have killed nine police officers. In an operation in August of 1986, the Anini team struck at First Bank, Sabongida-Ora, where they carted away N2, 000. But although the amount stolen was seen as chicken feed, they left the scene with a trail of blood. Worried by the seeming delusiveness of Anini and his gang members, the military President, General Ibrahim Babangida then ordered a massive manhunt for the kingpin and his fellow robbers. The police thus went after them; combed every part of Bendel State where they were reportedly operating and living. The whole nation was gripped with fear of the robbers and their daredevil exploits. Finally, it took the courage of Superintendent of Police, Kayode Uanreroro to bring the Anini reign of terror to an end. On December 3, 1986, Uanreroro caught Anini at No 26, Oyemwosa Street, opposite Iguodala Primary School, Benin City, in company with six women. Acting on a tip-off from the locals, the policeman went straight to the house where Anini was hiding and apprehended him with very little resistance. Uanreroro led a crack 10-man team to the house, knocked on the door of the room, and Anini himself, clad in underpants, opened the door. “Where is Anini,” the police officer quickly enquired. Dazed as he was caught off guard and having no escape route, Anini all the same tried to be smart. “Oh, Anini is under the bed in the inner room”. As he said it, he made some moves to walk past Uanreroro and his team. Uanreroro promptly reached for his gun, stepped hard on Anini’s right toes and shot at his left ankle. Anini surged forward but the policemen took hold of him and put him in a sitting position. They then pumped more bullets into his shot leg and almost severed the ankle from his entire leg. Already, anguished by the excruciating pains, the policemen asked him, “Are you Anini?” And he replied, “My brother, I won’t deceive you; I won’t tell you lie, I’m Anini.” He was from there taken to the police command headquarters where the state’s Police Commissioner, Parry Osayande, was waiting. While in the police net, Anini who had poor command of English and could only communicate in pidgin, made a whole lot of revelations. He disclosed, for instance that Osunbor, who had been arrested earlier, was his deputy, saying that Osunbor actually shot and wounded the former police boss of the state, Akagbosu The robbery suspects, including Iyamu, were sentenced to death. But in passing his judgement, Justice Omo-Agege remarked, “Anini will forever be remembered in the history of crime in this country, but it would be of unblessed memory. Few people if ever, would give the name to their children.” Their execution took place on March 29, 1987. http://www.nationalhelm.com/2015/07/historical-photo-read-how-nigerias-most.html?m=1
