Femi Adi/Kaduna Angry Gbagyi women and youth from Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, northwest Nigeria, Monday blocked major roads leading to headquaters of the local government secretariat over appointment of a non Gbagyi as council boss. The youth trooped out en masse to protest the nomination of Hajiya Hadiza Yahuza who was screened last week Friday by Kaduna State House of Assembly for the position of Interim Management Committee chairman of the local government council. They accused the State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai of marginalisation and injustice against the people of Chikun LG who are predominantly Gbagyi. State Chairman of Gbagyi youths, Amos Isah, told journalists that the executive members of group had last week visited the member representing Chikun Constituency at Kaduna State House of Assembly, Markus Zarmai Yari, at his residence and demanded explanation for what they described as a “slap” on their faces. According to him, El-Rufai messed up Gbagyi while he was FCT Minister in Abuja and he is today here as governor doing same to the Gbagyi in Kaduna. “This we will resist vehemently,” Isah said. He pointed out that the governor’ s appointment of a non Gbagyi in the area dominated by Gbagyis is unacceptable. At the time of filing this report, policemen have deployed to the troubled area to disperse the angry youths. An eye witnesses, Habila Shok, told P.M.NEWS that some persons sustained severe injuries during the clash with the police. Although the area has temporarily been cleared by the police, tension still pervades the air. http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/07/06/lg-boss-gbayi-women-youth-protest-el-rufais-appointment-of-non-indigene/ Cc:lalasticlala Pix: gbayi people carrying placards

Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State, on Monday, dissolved the 17 Local Government Councils in the state. A statement issued in Jos by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Rufus Bature, said the dissolution was in exercise of the powers conferred on the governor by the Constitution. It directed the local council chairmen, councilors and other political appointees to handover all government property in their care to Directors of Personnel Management in the councils. It would be recalled that the local government chairmen and councilors were elected into office in February 2014. “The governor directs all dissolved chairmen of councils; all members of the executive arm, councilors and other political appointees to hand over all government properties in their possession to directors of personnel management. “Security operatives in the various local governments and particularly the Divisional Police Officers and members of the various labour unions are to ensure that all government properties are secured in the custody of the DPMs,” it said. The statement further said that the governor has approved the appointment of Mrs Hulda Fwangchi as the new Head of Service of the State to replace Mr Ezekiel Dalyop. Until her appointment, Mrs Fwangchi was a Permanent Secretary with the Plateau Government. Lalong, according to the statement, thanked members of the dissolved councils and the former head of service for their selfless services and wished them well in their future endeavours. It added that the governor assured them that their wealth of experience would be relied upon from time to time in the course of governing the state. http://www.punchng.com/news/plateau-dissolves-local-councils/ |
The Kaduna state governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, on Sunday, July 5, dismissed the claims of his predecessor, Alhaji Ramalan Yero, that he left N8 billion in cash for him. A former deputy governor to Yero, Ambassador Nuhu Bajoga, who was at a function the previous week, said his boss actually left N8 billion in the state’s coffers. He also decried the cancelling of the proposed Kaduna State University of Science and Technology in Kafanchan by the present governor. He said: “The Kaduna State Government had N228,333,371.67 in its central account on May 29, 2015, representing the working capital that could be spent. “All other items in the bank balance are committed funds, and are not available to be spent by government. These include counterpart and reserve funds clearly earmarked for specific purposes such as Millennium Development Goals, MDGs, Subsidy Re-investment Empowerment Programme SURE-P and State Pensions, and as such cannot be termed available funds by any responsible government.” In a recent assessment of the performance of new governors by Naij.com, El-Rufai has trudged on without much complaint and has instead made major moves aimed at reducing the cost of government, despite the disastrous condition in which his predecessor left the state. http://www.naij.com/479664-el-rufai-yero-left-just-n228-million-not-n8-billion.html

From ALOYSIUS ATTAH, Onitsha No fewer than 65 students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka renounced cultism at the weekend. The students, including males and females, who belonged to various cult groups on campus trooped out to answer an altar call made by a visiting priest, Rev. Father Obinna Obayi, who was in the institution for a revival prayer session. Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, said he decided to organise the prayer session to help redeem some of the students, who had long derailed, despite being sent to study by their parents. During the prayer session, 44 of the students said to be members of secret cults answered the call to renounce their faith. The officiating priest said the exercise, which saw some of those who had refused to heed the call crying and rolling on the ground in the arena, was enough testimony that no one could hide from God. Advising the repentant cultists, the vice chancellor urged them to make their academic pursuit the primary reason for being in the institution. Ahaneku sounded a note of warning to students who were still members of cult groups to surrender themselves to the authority within seven days or be ready to face disciplinary action. In an interview with journalists, Ahaneku said the warning became necessary because of other students of the institution who still belonged to cult groups and were not at the session, who may think they had gone scot free, saying the warning was to avail them time before a crack down would begin. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/65-unizik-students-renounce-cultism/ Cc: lalasticlala
