Isa Idris, acting comptroller-general of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), says the delay in passport processing as a result of booklet scarcity will be over by March.

Speaking on Saturday during a media interaction, he blamed the challenge of delayed passport production on the coronavirus pandemic and the accompanying global lockdown, and also the difficulty in accessing foreign exchange in the country.

According to him, part of efforts put in place to address the delay is the launch of the enhanced e-passport, which he noted has improved features.

“Just Friday, we received a total of 45,000 booklets towards clearing the backlog and in December alone, we received more than 100,000 booklets which we have continued to distribute across the passport centres nationwide. This is not just for Nigerians in Nigeria alone but for those in the Diaspora as well,” Idris said

“But with the introduction of the enhanced e-passport, we are good to go in our efforts towards addressing the scarcity. This enhanced e-passport is a great improvement on the biometric passport technology which we adopted as a country in 2007.

“It is a strategic step towards curbing forgery, impersonation and other forms of fraud associated with obtaining travel documents under the old machine readable passport regime.

“And because we know that technology helps to address some of our challenges, including corruption, we have continued to try to stop personal contacts with our officials. My predecessor started to break the jinx and we are continuing on that. We plead with applicants to apply only online and stop physical contacts with our officers to avert corrupt practices.”

Idris also cautioned the public to avoid last-minute applications.

“Next week, more booklets will be received towards clearing the backlog. Stop engaging in last-minute application rush for either renewal or fresh application for international passports. Applicants for renewal can apply for it six months to the expiration of their passports,” he said.

“The service is working hard to ensure full compliance with the three-week duration for renewal and six-week waiting period for fresh applications.

“The waiting period is for us to validate the addresses provided by the applicants. So, Nigerians should not forget that they have six months to renew their passports. They should not wait till it expires, and of course, if there are other emergencies, and there is a window for them.”

Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide has warned that there will be no elections in 2023 if President Muhammadu Buhari fails to release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, in 2022.

The group also urged Igbos to equip and prepare themselves for a tougher 2022 with the same virtue and mental strength that saw them overcome the oppression, intimidation, and arm-twisting all over the world, especially in Nigeria.

In a statement signed by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, the group said that Igbos must be prepared for the horrible and shocking things ahead, while they hope for the promising future, stressing “there will be attempts to dash Igbo’s political hope for 2023.”

Ohanaeze said that Igbos will not be given the opportunity to fly the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential flags but added that natural occurrences will not only favour Ndigbo but re-position them.

The group said it believes that Igbos are destined to emancipate Nigeria from all ailments and maladies withholding her to regain her global status of Giant of Africa.

“President Muhammadu Buhari should release Nnamdi Kanu in 2022, to authorize peace, security, and stability to return to southeastern Nigeria.

“But if he’s not released in 2022 as being championed by Northern leadership (Arewa consultative forum and Northern Elders Forum), there will be no 2023 elections in Eastern Nigeria with the evidence of sit-at-homes in the East and it will deteriorate the security challenges of Southern Nigeria.

“Buhari cannot shy away from releasing Nnamdi Kanu, it will help to obliterate the negative impression of Nigeria in the eyes of the International Community, and restore the dignity of Nigeria, and re-admit her amongst the commit of Nations.”

It added, “In 2023, we are committed to the Nigeria President of Igbo extraction as a result of addressing the equity, fairness and obeying the gentleman agreement of Rotational Presidency reached by Nigeria’s Patriots in 1999, which has helped to stabilize the country.

“It will be unwise to scuttle it now it favors Ndigbo, we will commence the political journey of 2023 with persuasive visits to all the geopolitical zones of the country by January 13, 2023.

“But in the case of conspiracy, sabotage, and denial of Igbo the 2023 Presidential tickets in APC and PDP, both the conspirators and saboteurs will only be available for the doomsday and may not superintendent the affairs of the country in 2023, as secessionist groups will be strengthened and unified by the evidence of political neglect, marginalization, and enslavement of Eastern Nigeria.”

His Eminence Rev. Dr. Supo Samson Ayokunle, President of the Christian As­sociation of Nigeria CAN has called on Nigerians to cry to God for mercy to bring an end to the killings and other evils going on in the nation.

Ayokunle, while congratu­lating Nigerians on the dawn of a New Year, decried the impunity in which terrorists daily waste lives, saying unless the miraculous happens, Nige­ria was close to been Sodom and Gomorrah.

In his message for the year, he also bemoaned the politi­cal leaders strategising for the 2023 general elections instead of tackling insecurity, adding that calls made to the devel­oped world and United Nations seem unanswered as their fo­cus presently is on COVID-19.

“…At this juncture, I call on all Nigerians, irrespective of their religious affiliations, to rise up and cry for the mercy of God that can preserve us and bring an end to all these pains. It appears as if our gov­ernments have got to their wit end over the menace of inse­curity.

“Their major focus now is on the 2023 general elections. Can 2023 elections happen if the nation is overrun by criminals? Our nation must survive first and be at peace before election can take place. Except for the mercy of God to intervene divinely and mi­raculously, we would be like Sodom and Gomorrah.

“It is only God who can make the 2023 general elec­tions a reality. It is only God in his own way who can teach our leaders the right step to take. It is only God who can send us help from above. Be­cause of the desperate situa­tion we are, some governors are already calling for self-de­fence and declaration of state of emergency! This is unprec­edented.”

Ayokunle further asked all denominational and church leaders to use the opportunity of the New Year Fasting and Prayers programme of “our churches to rescue Nigeria from those who are hell-bent in destroying it by deliberately praying for the mercy of God over our unfortunate situation.”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejoiced with Nigerians on the dawning of the New Year, 2022.

The PDP, in a New Year Message through its National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, urged Nigerians to use the occasion to rekindle the virtues of love, unity, social justice as well as the quest for good governance in our country.

The party said surviving the year 2021 under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration not only called for a sober reflection but also an unwavering determination to rescue our nation from misrule.

He said it was a miracle that the country survived the last six years of “massive human rights violation, abuse of process, extra-judicial killings, stagnated infrastructure, excruciating economic hardship, escalated terrorism, and mass killings that had characterized the arrogant and incompetent APC administration”.

He said the New Year, therefore, presented us as a nation with the special opportunity to put aside all forms of divisiveness, fear and narrow-mindedness and pursue a new beginning to confront the challenges of bad governance and work as one people to salvage our nation in line with the Rescue and Rebuild mission of the PDP.

“We must therefore as a people, brace up and use all facilities within the ambit of the law to firmly resist the divisive machinations, propaganda, lies, (such as reeled out by the Federal Government on Thursday, December 30, 2021) as well as the electoral manipulations and rigging devices of the APC and its government.

“Our Party counsels the APC to desist from such as Nigerians no longer believe the highfalutin lies and deception of the APC, having realized and admitted the error of not asking for a proper dissection, direction and interrogation of the promised change by a bunch of inchoate sailors clobbered together for one purpose, to wit: hijack the people’s trust for remote private gains.

“The APC and its government should rather use the New year to review their anti-people policies, end their corruption and take urgent steps towards economic recovery by adopting a more transparent and inclusionist approach to governance; investing more on our productive sectors and being open to suggestions and constructive criticisms from Nigerians,” the statement read.

On security, the PDP said the APC government must get committed to the fight against terrorism by adopting proactive measures including extensive intelligence gathering for tactical operations.
