The Nigerian Prisons Service, Yobe Command, on Monday in Damaturu, decorated 102 officers promoted recently. Controller of Prisons in the state, Mr. Inuwa Abdullahi, said at the ceremony that some of them had stagnated for between 10 and 19 years. He urged them to rededicate themselves to duty to justify their elevation. Abdullahi said the call was necessary to ensure that the command lived up to its responsibility considering the lingering security challenges facing the state. He warned the officers against utterances or any acts capable of compromising their operation. “If you want to be relevant in the service, you must be honest, diligent, dedicated and committed to be able to succeed in this government,” Abdullahi said. On the delay in the promotion of some of the officers, he said, “it is unfortunate that promotion that was supposed to come after every two years was delayed for 10 to 19 years.” He called on the officers and the Muslims in the country to use the month of Ramadan to pray to God to bring an end to the persistent insecurity in the North-East. One of the newly promoted officers, who had been an Inspector of Prisons since 1996, Mrs. Laraba Sule, commended the service for the promotion. Sule attributed the delay in her promotion to lack of educational qualification and encouraged new officers in the service to develop themselves academically to avoid stagnation. On behalf of the beneficiaries, Chief Inspector of Prisons, Mr. Ahmed Shu’aibu, expressed their readiness to move the Nigerian Prisons Service to an enviable height. http://www.punchng.com/news/nps-promotes-102-officers-in-yobe/ |
Dr Ade Abolurin, Commandant-General, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), says the Corps had concluded plans to deploy about 500 drones and aircraft for proper surveillance of oil installations in the country. Abolurin disclosed this on Monday in Abuja at a meeting with senior officers of the Corps as part of efforts to strengthen its operational strategy. He said that the move was in line with the new administration’s resolve to tackle the issue of oil theft headlong to boost the economic revenue accrued to the country. The NSCDC boss, who decried the spate of pipeline vandalism and oil theft in the country, said the corps was working round the clock to stem the tide. He said the corps was exploring new ways to monitor and protect the pipelines, especially the use of technology and sophisticated gadgets to track down the vandals. “I can assure you that we are already exploring new approaches which will include the massive deployment of technology as opposed to the outdated conventional approach you are use to,’’ he said. He said that some drones had already been deployed on a test run basis in some areas in the Niger Delta region such as Bayelsa, to test its efficacy. Abolurin also said that officers of the corp’s anti-vandalism unit had also undergone refresher training in line with international best practice to deal with the menace. He said that so far this year about, 250 vandals had been directly arrested, while another 100 were arrested by other security agencies and handed over to them for prosecution, with 35 successfully convicted. He said the corps had also stepped up its protection of other critical infrastructure in the country such as power installation, telecommunication masts and equipment so as to ensure better service delivery to Nigerians. The commandant-general called on the media, host communities and other stakeholders to cooperate with the NSCDC and other security agencies to tackle the challenge of oil theft and pipeline vandalism. On the issue of the recent promotion exercise in the corps, he said the process was done transparently and in line with due process as opposed to insinuations in some quarters. He assured that the NSCDC would continue to do its best to ensure the security of lives and property in line with its mandate. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/oil-theft-nscdc-to-deploy-drones-aircraft-for-surveillance/

Okafor Ofiebor/Port Harcourt Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has vowed to upturn the status of some traditional rulers in state who are believed to have been favoured by the former Governor Rotimi Amaechi for political expediency while he will restore the status of those allegedly victimized unjustly by the ex-governor. In furtherance of his desire to correct what what he regards as “unfortunate politicisation of the traditional institution” by the former governor, he said: “I have sent an Executive Bill to the Rivers House of Assembly to repeal some sections of the Rivers State Traditional Rulers Council law, which the former Governor hurriedly passed in one of the rooms in Government House”. Wike said in the implementation of the obnoxious law, some traditional stools were hurriedly upgraded from third to first class and some had their status withdrawn from them. He said some traditional rulers were also arbitrarily promoted above their peers and when the new Assembly passes the his Executive Bill into law, his administration would correct the injustices and arbitrariness. The governor who appeared on popular news and current affairs interactive programme of Silverbird FM radio in Port Harcourt decried a situation where some hitherto revered traditional rulers dabbled into politics. He specifically cited example where the Chairman of the state traditional council allegedly sent text messages to some traditional rulers not to attend ceremonies when the former president (Goodluck Jonathan) came to the state to address the people of the state. “How can you do that? How can you tell traditional rulers not to listen their President who wants to address them? As a traditional ruler you don’t dabble into politics. When Mr A from PDP visits your palace you bless him and when another from APC visits you bless him too and all you tell them is to ensure there is peace in the state. But if you do anything contrary to that there is dire consequences,” Wike cautioned Wike also alleged that a particular traditional ruler from Isiokpo, headquarters of Ikwerre local government area of the state went to the extent of taking a full page advertorial condemning his governorship ambition during the campaign period. The governor stated that the traditional ruler stated in the sponsored advertorial that Ikwerre people are not greedy for an Ikwerre (Wike) to succeed Amaechi also an Ikwerre. The state governor further alleged that the former governor dethroned a traditional ruler for daring to welcome him and his campaign team in his palace during campaign period, while someone who was no longer a chief in his (Wike’s) community, Rumuepricom, Obio-Akpor local Government was made a traditional ruler. However, Chidi Lloyd, the former Leader of the 7th Rivers House of Assembly disagreed with Wike on the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers law. He said that he was sure Wike had not read through the law the former lawmakers passed before condemning it. He said the new law passed was made to reflect the current realities aimed at “strengthening and empowering the traditional institution but not to make them partisan,” Lloyd posited. http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/06/22/wike-vows-to-demote-traditional-rulers-favoured-by-amaechi/

Former governor of Anambra state, Senator Chris Ngige, has spoken on the expectations of the Igbo tribe as regards President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. Ngige who spoke to newsmen in Abuja which Daily Trust was part of, outlined the people’s expectations in this dispensation when he was asked what he thinks the people of the region will be looking forward to. He said, “The preponderance of the people of the South-East didn’t believe that a change of government was possible. Luckily, some of us believed in it, luckily our mantra in our party is change. While the people of the South-East are hoping, we also expect them to change in their political behaviour and political culture. There are a lot of things they will expect from our government, there are a lot of things we expect from them too, it’s reciprocal. This party is not like PDP, we don’t share money in polling booths like PDP is doing and even APGA, we don’t believe in that, they have to change.” Ngige went on to make a case for the roads in the region, doling out the state of the roads, he said, “Our government believes in equity, everybody knows that South-East roads are some of the worst in the country. Enugu-Onitsha through Awka; Enugu-Okigwe-Umuahia-Aba-Port-Harcourt- impassable. Onitsha-Nnewi-Arondiziogwu- Okigwe; Umuahia-Ikot-Ekpene-Aba and Onitsha-Aba are all impassable, so many federal roads that abound there. “So, the people of the South-East are looking up to this government to give them good roads and infrastructure. They will also expect the 2nd Niger Bridge which has been talked about for the past 18 to 20 years. The talk about the 2nd Niger Bridge is becoming embarrassing. This is a 1.8 kilometre bridge. The 2nd Niger Bridge is what we expect this government to do for us because the other bridge is rickety, that bridge is in a state of disuse, it’s not been well managed, and it’s also a bridge that suffered the full weight of hostilities during the Civil War.” Joining the mantra of anti-corruption that President Buhari is known to profess at every opportunity, Ngige joined his voice to the call, saying, “We will also as a government face corruption; once the system is not corrupt the people will benefit, the South easterners will benefit more because they are always out for competition, and if you give them a level playing field which is in an anti-corruption measure, the South easterners will thrive,” he concluded. http://www.naij.com/467504-ngige-tasks-buhari-on-south-east-challenges.html Cc:lalasticlala |
Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, the immediate past governor of Rivers state, has explained the real reasons newly-installed governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has been blackmailing him. Amaechi further described the supposed probe of his administration by his successor as a sham and a fraudulent witch-hunt meant to deceive the public. According to a statement released by the media office of the former governor as obtained by PM News on Sunday, June 22, the probe of Amaechi is dead on arrival. The media aide added that all the noise Wike is making is to grab media headlines with his lies of monumental corruption against Amaechi. “It is all drama made for the media. What is playing out is a script written and directed by Nyesom Wike. Wike should move to Nollywood where his devious skills would probably be useful. “Even while inaugurating his yeoman commission of Inquiry, Wike could not conceal his vendetta agenda. He was clear to the panel members that their job is to indict Amaechi. “While it’s no longer in doubt what would be the report of Wike’s sham probe commission. What may shock Nigerians is the extent Wike has gone and is ready to go to manufacture stories of corrupt practices, and the kind of bogus tales of corruption against Amaechi that he would soon be feeding the nation. “We are aware that even the Chairman of his Inquiry Commission, was shocked and protested when Wike gave him the litany of phony claims of corruption against Amaechi that the chairman would write in the panel’s report. But Wike had assured him not to worry that he had since been working towards arriving at that conclusion and he would provide the commission with all the (fake) evidence needed to arrive at that report. “Truly, since May 29, that is all Wike has been doing; cooking spurious reports of corruption against Amaechi. Wike has been intimidating, threatening, coercing and blackmailing officials of the past administration, especially civil servants into making false, phony and bogus statements that would make legitimate government transactions appear as corrupt practices. “Permanent Secretaries, Directors of Finance and Administration (DFAs), the State bankers and even contractors are harassed, threatened and blackmailed to twist and distort, or even completely alter legitimate government transactions in his desperation to cook up, and fabricate sham cases of corruption against Amaechi. This has been the one-point agenda of the Wike government, a vendetta mission against his former boss and benefactor. “Amaechi will use every constitutional and legal means available to protect his name and image from this massive smear campaign, State-sponsored onslaught against him by this directionless, purposeless Wike led government. As governor, Amaechi served his people well and the good things he did with the resources of the state are visible all over the state,” the statement read. Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress has alleged that Wike has been going about the witch-haunt in a bid to prevent president Muhammadu Buhari from including the former governor as one of his cabinet members. http://www.naij.com/467441-i-know-why-wike-is-fraudulently-witch-haunting-me.html Cc:lalasticlala
