People supporting the independence of the Biafran territories in south east Nigeria have staged a protest in Central London demanding the release of their UK-based leader Nnamdi Kanu. Kanu, head of the Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob) group and director of the London- based radio station Radio Biafra, was arrested in Lagos earlier in October. According to the Nigeria's state security service (DSS), he was released on bail, but his supporters claim that he is still being detained and has not resumed his activities on Radio Biafra. Pro-Biafrans call for the independence of territories that constituted the Biafran Republic, established in 1967 and re-annexed to Nigeria in 1970, following a civil war that claimed between one and three million lives. Supporters of the Biafra issue hold regular marches − which they call "evangelisation" − across several states in southern Nigeria, mainly inhabited by the Igbo ethnic group. Protests have increased in the past few days in Nigeria and other states after Kanu was apprehended. Why advertise with us Pro-Biafrans accuse the police of violence. However, police have denied these claims, arguing that people advocating for Biafra hold violent protests disrupting peace. Amnesty International said in an exclusive report by IBTimes UK that there is "credible evidence that pro-Biafran separatists in Nigeria are targeted by police". Meanwhile, the Nigerian government told IBTimes UK that it does not consider the separatist movement as a threat to the current leadership and defined pro-Biafrans as an "insignificant number of frustrated people who are not a threat to the existence of Nigeria"

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai, on Monday urged troops in the North-East to remain focused in their final push to end insurgency in the country. Buratai, who visited the front-line unit of 113 Task Battalion in Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State, commended the troops for the successes recorded so far. “You have done well and you must maintain the tempo. “You must be on the offensive and waste no time in giving a final push in ending Boko Haram.” He assured the soldiers that there was no cause for alarm over their salaries and allowances, stressing that the issue was being sorted out. “There may be a little delay, but everything is being sorted out,” Buratai said. The Army chief was also at the 118 Task Force Battalion, where he urged the troops to sustain the final offensive against insurgents. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Buratai also visited the site of the newly formed 23 Task Force Brigade located in Jakana, and participated in a night operation with the troops of 29 Task Force Brigade along the Jakana axis. Nigeria earned a total sum of N980.48bn from taxes between July and September this, figures obtained from the Federal Inland Revenue Service have revealed. The tax figures for the third quarter obtained by our correspondent on Friday in Abuja were prepared by the Planning, Reporting and Statistics Department of the FIRS. The document however stated that the N980.48bn was N162.52bn lower than the quarterly target of N1.14tn set by the Federal Government in the 2015 fiscal period. The N980.48bn tax collected for the three months showed that N654.61bn, representing 66.76 per cent, was generated from non-oil taxes while the balance of N325.86bn or 33.24 per cent was earned through the Petroleum Profit Tax. A breakdown of the tax revenue showed that the sum of N250.25bn was earned in September. This shows a decline of N130.76bn when compared to the monthly target of N381.01bn for 2015. In terms of tax collection according to types, the document said that in the month of September, the country earned N111.96bn from the PPT, representing 44.74 per cent of the entire collection for the month. Others are Company Income Tax, N65.28bn representing 26.09 per cent; gas income, N826m or 0.33 per cent; capital gains tax, N263m or 0.11 per cent; and stamp duty, N766m or 0.31 per cent. Similarly, the Value Added Tax generated N56.39bn or 22.54 per cent; education tax, N10.26bn or 4.1 per cent and Nigerian Information Technology Development Fund, N84m or 0.03 per cent. The Acting FIRS Executive Chairman, Mr. Babatunde Fowler, had said the agency would soon carry out a special audit of all companies operating in the country in order to increase the level of compliance with the relevant tax law. “We have a duty to advise taxpayers; we equally have an obligation to government in ensuring an increase in revenue collection. “It’s time to stop all forms of unwholesome practices in tax-related issues because Nigerians need us at this critical time to re-position the country for more resources. “We don’t have all the answers; we need to re-position the entire process. All we are asking for is cooperation to move the nation’s tax system to another level.” The audit exercise, according to him, will be carried out within 30 days and will take into consideration the various year ends and peak points of activities of the various companies. Fowler said the FIRS had entered into collaboration with the professional service providers, states board of internal revenue, noting that this would mark a turning point for taxation as well as reduce the country’s reliance on oil Mr. Babatunde Fowler said the focus of the service now was to expand the nation’s tax net, build capacity of tax administration and share information that would promote voluntary compliance. In the area of tax evasion, he said the FIRS would go after multinational companies, individuals and other corporate organisations that were evading the payment of taxes in the country. Statistics obtained from the service revealed that out of the 450,000 companies in Nigeria, only 125,000 representing 27.7 per cent pay taxes and that 325,000 companies are evading tax, thus denying the government of huge revenue annually. Babatunde Fowler said his administration would not take the issue of tax evasion lightly as he was aware that some foreign companies operating in Nigeria were being investigated in England for evading taxes. He said with the renewed effort to strengthen tax administration, the era where companies kept three types of accounts – one for the banks, one for shareholders and another for tax administrators – was over. The fight against insurgency in the northeast is receiving popular support as Toyota Nigeria Limited (TNL) recently donated some Hilux vans to the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in Maiduguri. Receiving the donation, Nigeria's Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin, expressed profound gratitude to the management and staff of TNL describing the company's gesture as a show of public support and approval for MNJTF actions. "This donation is a laudable one and very timely, too. This shows that the fight against Boko Haram insurgency will come to an effective end going by the presidential directive. The provision of adequate security, not only in the northeast, but in all corners of the country is a task that must be done and done quickly too," he said. The CDS, who was represented at the occasion by Air vice Marshal Olutayo Oguntoyinbo, promised that the Hilux vans would be used to ensure success of the operation against all forms of guerrilla movements and cross-border crimes around the Lake Chad Basin. While charging soldiers to make maximum use of the vehicles, he urged other companies and corporate organisations in Nigeria and countries around the Lake Chad Basin to emulate Toyota Company in this noble gesture. He called on all Nigerians to come forward and support the Nigerian Military in the ongoing campaign against terrorism. ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER ADVERTISEMENT In his own remarks, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Lt-General Buratai stated that the vehicles will be used to most effectively to achieve the three mandate of MNJTF which include, defeat of the Boko Haram terror group in all the area they occupied. "The Hilux van would be put to most effective use for the achievement of the three mandate of MNJTF namely, to defeat the insurgents in all the countries they exist whether in Nigeria, Niger Republic, Chad and Cameroon, and to facilitate the humanitarian and logistics needs of troops in the conduct of their duties by providing escort and security for them. "The vehicles would also be used for the distribution of materials to IDPs and to re-establish state authority to create safe environments for those displaced to come fully back to their villages and continue with their day-to-day activities". The COAS described the action of TNL as a very important role in the realization of the presidential directive of routing out terrorists in three months adding, that in addition to using the vehicles for patrol purposes, it will also be used to escort humanitarian support aid to IDPs and to re-establish civil authority by conveying them to their villages. ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER ADVERTISEMENT TNL's Managing Director, Mr Kunle Adeojo said that all members of his management board are agreed to support the Armed forces through these vehicle donation, saying that fighting against insurgents needs the support of all nations and all companies. "Doing this is a worthy cause indeed for the singular fact that businesses and potentials can only be fully maximized in a safe and secure society. That is why Toyota Company reckons that the crusade against insurgency deserves the support and solidarity of all hence the donation of this pick-ups to aid your operations". According to a statement issued by the DHQ acting Director of Information, Col Rabe Abubakar, yesterday in Abuja, the managing director further saluted the courage and doggedness of the Nigerian military as it champions this campaign. An Akwa-Ibom State indigene, identified as Mrs Okon Iniabasi, has reportedly cut off a man’s penis when he attempted to rape her. The incident happened in the Ikono Local Government Area of the state. The man, Linus Ibok, Punch reports, is her husband’s best friend. Reports say Ibok had on Saturday, accompanied his friend, Iniabasi’s husband, a petty trader to board a vehicle to Aba, Abia State to purchase items for his shop in the village. Afterwards, Ibok trailed Iniabasi to her farm where his manhood was cut off as he tried to have canal knowledge of her. As the story goes, Iniabasi was said to have disclosed that she was not surprised when she saw Ibok in her farmland, as she thought he wanted to help her since he was almost like a member of their family but the shock came when Ibok confessed his undying love for her. She reportedly rebuked him and asked him to leave the farm or she would report him to her husband. It was at that point Ibok grabbed her and attempted to rape her. Meanwhile, she allegedly let him UnCloth and on noticing that, she used her machete to cut off his manhood. After that, she ran to the village to inform others, who rushed to the farm to meet Ibok in the pool of his own blood with his manhood cut off. I will not go and re-register my line. You can fool everyone if you like, you might have fooled me before, but you would never fool me again. The only reason while you continue to pull the wool over our gullible eyes is because the consumer rights’ protection agencies are either in the vegetative state, or completely dead. How can you explain a situation where you would tell your millions of teeming subscribers to register their SIM cards and provide the necessary bio-data, only for you to wake up one morning to tell us to go and register our lines again WITH ABSOLUTELY NO EXPLANATION? It beats my imagination and it defies not just logic, but also philosophy. Were you drunk when you were registering our numbers? Did a malicious virus wipe your entire database? Maybe I’m giving you too much credit sef. You probably wrote the records in books like an ancient bookkeeper and a giant yellow rat ate them all. Whatever your reasons (or lack of reasons) may be, this is beyond ridiculous. I have always maintained an MTN line because apart from being my very first line, most of my close associates also use MTN. To some extent, the coverage is also extensive. I didn’t hesitate when the directive came from NCC to register our lines. I braved the queue, registered my line and collected my security number. Didn’t I try enough? Looking back, I can deduce that my attachment to MTN was more sentimental than practical, as your tariffs are the highest for calls and for browsing. You send an average of 100 spam texts per day, enough to run down a Blackberry battery and more than enough to give any Osun State government worker waiting for Aregbesola’s alert acute hypertension. Your nuisance value knows no bounds. Even Airtel that has been passed round different investors more times than a devil’s mail bag has not come up with this kind of Grade A foolishness. What the heck is wrong with you? Don’t your customers mean anything to you? Doesn’t it bother you that Nigerians who wasted their time to register their SIM cards have to do the same thing again? You haven’t even deemed it fit to fine- tune the process. It doesn’t make sense to preserve bad experiences like these, in very much the same way that one relic of history is preserving mud huts, and stating them on an assets’ declaration form. My records are not on your database, but you remember my number when you want to tell me to text ‘YES’ to win a missing plot of land in Port-Harcourt, right? May heavy-duty thunder fire all of una. I really don’t blame you. If Nigerians had run your devious, xenophobic, exploitative, heartless, opportunistic, fraudulent ass back to South Africa, you wouldn’t be here making them queue desperately like migrants. What’s to say that there wouldn’t be another sham registration in the next couple of months since you guys obviously don’t know what you are doing? You blocked my line, you have helped me. Prior to your ridiculous directive, I had already banished your yeye SIM card to a barely functional phone. I have even borrowed the maximum permissible amount. Go ahead, feel free. It sure feels great knowing that when I eventually toss the phone into the trash- can, I won’t have to take out the SIM. Good riddance to bad rubbish. You deserve to be sued for every fraudulent penny you’ve ever made on our shores. Thanks to other service providers for making sure that your evil dream of becoming a monopoly will forever remain a demented hallucination. There are so many fishes in the ocean. I will not tolerate your recklessness any longer. Peace at last…. This letter speaks my mind. |

A 42-year-old herbalist, Lamidi Ibrahim, was Tuesday arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate Court sitting in Ikeja for allegedly converting his apartment to a shrine. Ibrahim, who turned his rented apartment into a shrine, was charged for breach of peace and conspiracy. While testifying in court, the Prosecutor, Sgt Kehinde Olatunde, said the accused who resides at No. 9, Awopeju Close, Iju-Ishaga, Agege area of the State committed the offences on August 31 at his residence. The prosecutor noted that Ibrahim, alongside others now at large, conspired to cause a breach of the peace by illegally converting a rented room into a shrine, adding that he and his cohorts usually performed rituals and disturbed the peace of neighbours. Olatunde said, “The accused always buries charms in the compound, thereby disturbing the peace of co- tenants and all efforts to caution him always resulted in threat to life. “He also performed rituals, sacrifices, including spiritual cleansing in the premises.” He added that the apartment was also used by fraudsters to carry out fraudulent activities. “The accused brings people of questionable character to the premises to perpetrate fraudulent acts and engage in smoking of hemp,” Olatunde said. According to Olatunde, the offences contravened Sections 166 and 410 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, which prescribes six months jail-term for offenders. When the charges were read, the accused pleaded not guilty and the Magistrate, Mr A.O. Aka-Bashorun, consequently granted him bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum. Aka-Bashorun, adjourned the case to October 10 for mention. |
