The family of Ayo Oluwaniyi, the wife of one of the soldiers, who allegedly stole N400m they were escorting, has lamented the arrest and detention of the woman and her three children by the Nigerian Army in Ondo State.

It was gathered that 37-year-old Ayo and her children were arrested after her husband, Gabriel, was identified as one of the five soldiers alleged to have stolen the money they were escorting from Sokoto to Kaduna.

A family member, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said Ayo and her children were being detained at the 32 Artillery Brigade, Owena Barracks, Akure.

She stated that they had been denied access to family members, adding that the family was worried about Ayo and her children’s state of health.

The PUNCH had reported that five soldiers were confirmed to have stolen the money while on escort duty from Sokoto to Kaduna in the first week of July.

The former General Officer Commanding, 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Sokoto, Maj. Gen. Hakeem Otiki, had reportedly asked the soldiers to escort the money and deliver it to a Very Important Person in Kaduna.

The 8 Division spokesperson, Lieutenant Audu Arigu, had confirmed the incident, saying investigation had commenced and identified the runaway soldiers as Corporal Gabriel Oluwaniyi, Corporal Mohammed Aminu and Lance Corporals Haruna, Oluji Joshua and Hayatudeen Abubakar.

Army sources stated that the runaway soldiers turned in their rifles and abandoned their mobile phones at the Infantry Corps in Jaji, Kaduna State, before they escaped.



One of the sources said, “Investigations so far showed that this was not the first time that the escort soldiers had conveyed such a huge amount of money for the officer. The soldiers all left their mobile phones in the vehicle, which has made tracking them difficult.”

The Oluwaniyi family source stated, “Ayo’s husband is a soldier and he was deployed in Sokoto State. We learnt that that was not the first time they were escorting money on the instructions of their boss, so they decided to abscond with the money.

“We learnt that they dropped their uniforms, guns and phones. It was through Ayo husband’s phone that they got her number. They probably sent the information to the division here in Ondo and that was how she was arrested. We learnt that the wife of the other four soldiers had escaped.

“It’s been two weeks since Ayo and her children have been in detention. They won’t allow us to see them and they did not allow them to change clothes; they just kept on telling us that she was not being maltreated. We are worried; one of her children is just about a year old.

“They said the victims were being detained because they could not find her husband and probably she was in touch with him. She said she had not seen or heard from her husband, but they said maybe he would come out if Ayo and her children were held. We cannot speak with her; it is one of the soldiers guarding her that we speak to.”

When the Brigade’s Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Captain Victor Olukoya, was contacted, he said he was not at the base, adding that he would get back to our correspondent when he returned.



“I am not on the ground at the moment, I am attending a course. Anything you want to say, wait till I come back; I will let you know when I come back,” Olukoya stated.

Federal High Court in Abuja has asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and three others from proceeding with their renewed probe of Senate President, Bukola Saraki.


The Department of State Services (DSS), the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) and the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) are also affected by the restraining orders.

Justice Taiwo gave the verdict on Tuesday following two ex-parte motions filed by Saraki with two fundamental rights enforcement applications, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/507/2019 and FHC/ABJ/CS/508/2019.


The orders, according to the judge, are to subsist pending the hearing and conclusion of the two fundamental rights suits by Saraki.

Earlier, Saraki’s lawyer, Sunday Onubi, arguing told the court that the respondents would cause irreparable damages to the applicant’s rights if not restrained before the substantive suits were heard.

Onubi prayed the court that, “for an order directing the respondents, by themselves, their servants, agents, privies or officers to stay all actions in connection with the subject matter of this suit, pending the hearing and determination of the originating motion on notice.”


He said the motion was supported by 37 paragraphs affidavit, deposed to by the applicant (Saraki), with four exhibits attached, marked ABS 1, to ABS 4

Justice Taiwo in his ruling said: “There is no doubt that the Fundamental Rights Enforcement Procedure Rules 2009 is a special proceeding with its stated rules and procedure.

“By the provision of Order 4(3) of the Fundamental Rights-Civil Procedure Rules, 2009, the court may, if satisfied that hardship may be caused to the applicant before the service of an application where liberty or life of the applicant is involved, hear the application ex parte upon such interim reliefs as the justice of the application may demand.



“There is no doubt that, in making the interim reliefs or orders, the court is guided, even in the exercise of its discretion judicially and judiciously applied by the law and statues.

“Here comes in the rules and of course, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“One of the considerations, which is paramount, is the hardship the applicant may go through, between the service of the processes and the hearing of the main motion, amongst others.



“I have gone through the affidavit in support of the ex parte application particularly paragraphs 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, and 35.

“I also duly considered the averments in the affidavit of urgency and all the exhibits attached.

“I am of the view, after due consideration of the aforesaid averments, that this court ought to make the order being sought by the applicant pending the hearing and determination of the originating motion on notice.



“To do otherwise and not to restrain the respondents by asking them not to stay actions will result in the court being faced with a fait accompli.

“I further come to my conclusion that the applicant is entitled to this order in view of the trite law that once the court is seized of a matter, parties are bound not to do anything that will make nugatory any order of the court by staying action.

“This is akin to ordering that parties maintain the status quo. However, the court must make a positive order.



“Therefore the application made ex parte pursuant to the law, succeeds. The respondents are hereby directed, either by themselves, their servants, agents, privies or officers to stay all actions in connection with the subject of this suit pending the hearing and determination of the origination motion on notice.

“I further order that the respondents shall be served fort with the originating processes and they shall file, within five days of being served, their responses.

“The hearing is fixed for May 23.”

Justice Taiwo made a similar pronouncement in relation to the second motion

This political fight between the Igbos and Yoruba has only one beneficiary which is the Fulani/Hausa
.
I think the roforofo fight is perhaps motivated by the northern oligarchy to continue politically enslaving the southern Nigeria
.
The north want to continue controlling the oil deposit and that's why the Fulani/Hausa would continue to sponsor some elements in the south to continue helping them causing ethnic crisis in the south
.
Assuming this crude deposits is in the northern region, Nigeria may have experience not only development but a relative peace
.
The oil is the problem and most especially where it's particularly located
.
Assuming the crude deposits is not close to a Biafran land, the north may had allowed the Igbos to have their independent nation but the fear I surmise is that if Igbos are allowed to go, Igbos may likely come and reclaim the Niger Delta region which ancestrally belonged to the Eastern region
.
The Igbos are not politically trusted in Nigeria because of the first January 1966 coup many Nigerians erroneously termed an Igbo coup

I have been explaining this to people that this first coup isn't an Igbo coup but strictly a Nigerian Army coup but because Igbo men are top military officers as at then, many erroneously claim it's an Igbo coup

I am not sure about what career path to follow. I would like to pursue a career in biomedical engineering, but I biomedical engineering students say it is safer to get a degree in a traditional engineering field such as mechanical, chemical, and electrical engineering. Honestly, I do not see myself as mechanical, chemical, or electrical engineering. I want to study biomedical engineering, but I do not wish to go to medical school. I am afraid that if I a choose biomedical engineering as a major when I graduate I will not be able to find a job as I heard from biomedical engineerings that companies hire mechanical, chemical, and electrical engineers instead. I just need some help because I do not know what to do. I heard that a degree in biomedical engineer is not as solid as a mechanical, chemical, or electrical engineering degree because in biomedical engineering you learn a bit of mechanical, chemical, and electrical engineering, but not enough to perform a job as such. While a mechanical, chemical, or electrical engineer can work as a biomedical engineer. Am I setting myself for failure if I choose biomedical engineering instead of a traditional engineering field? Would I be able to find a job as a biomedical engineer?
