ComputersForty Years Of The Internet: How The World Changed For Ever by beejaychinedu(op): 11:08am On Nov 11, 2016
Towards the end of the summer of 1969 – a few weeks after the moon landings, a few days after Woodstock, and a month before the first broadcast of Monty Python's Flying Circus – a large grey metal box was delivered to the office of Leonard Kleinrock, a professor at the University of California in Los Angeles. It was the same size and shape as a household refrigerator, and outwardly, at least, it had about as much charm. But Kleinrock was thrilled: a photograph from the time shows him standing beside it, in requisite late-60s brown tie and brown trousers, beaming like a proud father.

Had he tried to explain his excitement to anyone but his closest colleagues, they probably wouldn't have understood. The few outsiders who knew of the box's existence couldn't even get its name right: it was an IMP, or "interface message processor", but the year before, when a Boston company had won the contract to build it, its local senator, Ted Kennedy, sent a telegram praising its ecumenical spirit in creating the first "interfaith message processor". Needless to say, though, the box that arrived outside Kleinrock's office wasn't a machine capable of fostering understanding among the great religions of the world. It was much more important than that.

It's impossible to say for certain when the internet began, mainly because nobody can agree on what, precisely, the internet is. (This is only partly a philosophical question: it is also a matter of egos, since several of the people who made key contributions are anxious to claim the credit.) But 29 October 1969 – 40 years ago next week – has a strong claim for being, as Kleinrock puts it today, "the day the infant internet uttered its first words". At 10.30pm, as Kleinrock's fellow professors and students crowded around, a computer was connected to the IMP, which made contact with a second IMP, attached to a second computer, several hundred miles away at the Stanford Research Institute, and an undergraduate named Charley Kline tapped out a message. Samuel Morse, sending the first telegraph message 125 years previously, chose the portentous phrase: "What hath God wrought?" But Kline's task was to log in remotely from LA to the Stanford machine, and there was no opportunity for portentousness: his instructions were to type the command LOGIN.

To say that the rest is history is the emptiest of cliches – but trying to express the magnitude of what began that day, and what has happened in the decades since, is an undertaking that quickly exposes the limits of language. It's interesting to compare how much has changed in computing and the internet since 1969 with, say, how much has changed in world politics. Consider even the briefest summary of how much has happened on the global stage since 1969: the Vietnam war ended; the cold war escalated then declined; the Berlin Wall fell; communism collapsed; Islamic fundamentalism surged. And yet nothing has quite the power to make people in their 30s, 40s or 50s feel very old indeed as reflecting upon the growth of the internet and the world wide web. Twelve years after Charley Kline's first message on the Arpanet, as it was then known, there were still only 213 computers on the network; but 14 years after that, 16 million people were online, and email was beginning to change the world; the first really usable web browser wasn't launched until 1993, but by 1995 we had Amazon, by 1998 Google, and by 2001, Wikipedia, at which point there were 513 million people online. Today the figure is more like 1.7 billion.

Unless you are 15 years old or younger, you have lived through the dotcom bubble and bust, the birth of Friends Reunited and Craigslist and eBay and Facebook and Twitter, blogging, the browser wars, Google Earth, filesharing controversies, the transformation of the record industry, political campaigning, activism and campaigning, the media, publishing, consumer banking, the pornography industry, travel agencies, dating and retail; and unless you're a specialist, you've probably only been following the most attention-grabbing developments. Here's one of countless statistics that are liable to induce feelings akin to vertigo: on New Year's Day 1994 – only yesterday, in other words – there were an estimated 623 websites. In total. On the whole internet. "This isn't a matter of ego or crowing," says Steve Crocker, who was present that day at UCLA in 1969, "but there has not been, in the entire history of mankind, anything that has changed so dramatically as computer communications, in terms of the rate of change."

BREAKING: Hillary Clinton ‘leaves 9/11 Ceremony Suffering From Medical Episode’
The Democratic presidential nominee appeared to faint as she was helped into a van, in what a witness said was “clearly” a medical episode.
US journalist Rick Levanthal said: “Source tells me Hillary Clinton ‘clearly having some type of medical episode’.”
He added his unnamed security source said she "had to be helped into her van by her protective detail” at the World Trade Centre.
Rumours of ill health have plagued Mrs Clinton during her presidential campaign.
This is a breaking story. More to follow.

EducationStaying At School Hostel (advantages And Disadvantages) by beejaychinedu(op): 12:54pm On Sep 10, 2016
Every student at one point or other is faced with a problem on making a decision whether to stay in the hostel or off campus. Whether you have chosen the former or later, they are pros and consequences attached to which ever one you have chosen.
In this article, we will be discussing the advantages as well as disadvantages of staying at the school hostel.

ADVANTAGES

1. Few steps away from lectures: Staying on campus gives you the opportunity not to miss any lecture for a whole session just because the venues are stone throw from you. You can start preparing for your lecture just 15min before the time and still make it to the class.

2. No transportation issues : The queue at the park most times can be annoying. There are times you will have to trek to a certain place before you can get a cab. With staying on campus, transportation has never been the issue.

3. Less expensive : Staying at the school hostel gives you the opportunity to save a lot. Ranging from the cheap hostel fee to zero transportation cost to friends fixing meals for you to free watching of football matches. You really don't have to worry about you being broke most times .

4.Unlimited Internet access : Wow! Noting sounds better on campus than this. Having access to internet facility makes life easier. You can do whatever you like on the internet without breaking a sweat. Great!

5. Constant Power supply : This gives you the opportunity to study at midnight and whatever else you want to do with electricity.

6. Attaining great academic height : When you stay on campus, you get to meet people better than you academic wise easier, they help you with courses you finding difficult. You also have a lot more time to study compared to someone staying off campus. You can decide to use the library anytime you like. All these in one way or the other contributes to achieving good grades.

DISADVANTAGES

1. Lack of privacy : If you someone that really value his/her privacy then you will have to get used to life at hostel. No one respect your privacy and anything goes in the room.

2. Problems from squatters: Though they can be curb, but before then be ready to get frustrated, because of over population they could lead to disorganisation, quarrels and many more.

3. Dirty room mates : If you are unfortunate to be thrown into a room with dirty occupants, then be ready to beat them or join them and if you can't beat them you join them.

4. Easy prone to infections : Due to the fact that a lot of people make use of the few rest rooms available, this can really be a great challenge to others whose body get infected easily.

5. Peer Pressure : No doubt peer pressure is everywhere, but in this case you aren't given the opportunity to pick who to live with, if your room mate are bad gangs then you can be negatively influenced by them.

With this, the ball is in your court. In my next article Ill be writing about advantages and disadvantages of staying off campus. Stay tuned.

Foreign AffairsRe: What Is Brexit And What Is Going To Happen Now That Britain Has Voted To LEAVE ? by beejaychinedu(op): 3:01pm On Jun 24, 2016
What will happen to sovereignty when Britain leaves the EU?

The Brexit campaign argue that the EU referendum was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Britain to restore its sovereignty.

Eurosceptics see EU institutions as inherently undemocratic and argue that laws that affect the UK should not be decided by bureaucrats in Brussels.

Leading Brexit figure Boris Johnson said that the EU had “very greatly eroded” the public’s ability to elect politicians to pass laws that matter to them.

Europhiles argue that the UK will now wield less power to act internationally outside the EU and workers will lose rights enshrined under EU law.

What will happen to the immigration when Britain leaves the EU?

Eurosceptics say that leaving the EU will allow Britain tackle soaring immigration and increase security at its borders.

Britain will no longer have to accept ‘free movement of people’ from Europe, which Brexit campaigners argue puts pressure on public services such as the NHS and schools.

Brexit campaigners have said Britain can now get an ‘Australian-style points system’ to better manage immigration and fill skill shortages.

But the Remain campaign argue that the British economy will no longer benefit from the free movement of foreign workers, such as health professionals, in the EU.

Some Europhiles have also said that Brexit would compromise the UK’s ability to fight cross-border crime and terrorism.

Mr Cameron has even said he suspects that ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi “would be happy” when Britain leaves the EU.

What are economic views on Brexit?

The most immediate risk to global markets was Britain leaving the EU, warned Bank of England Governor Mark Carney recently warned.

The pound this morning fell to the lowest level since 1985 and emergency steps are now being taken to calm the economic turmoil.

There is uncertainty over what will happen when Britain leaves the EU because it has to make new trade agreements with the rest of the world.

Supporters of Brexit argue that EU countries have every incentive keep trading with the UK, which is a large importer of goods and services.

But Europhiles worry that foreign companies will be less likely to invest here and could move their headquarters out if Britain loses access to the single market.

Ahead of the referendum, investor Neil Woodford, founder of Woodford Investment Management, described pro-European claims that the economy would be damaged as “bogus”.

Mr Woodford said: “I think it's a nil-sum game frankly, whether we stay or whether we leave."

Ukip Nigel Farage has also said the Brexit vote is good news for exporters who have struggled with the high value of the pound.

Now Britain has voted to leave the EU, it will no longer have to contribute billions of pounds a year towards the European Union's budget.

In March Eurosceptics slammed a Confederation of British Industry (CBI) report that claimed that Brexit would cause a £100billion “shock” to the UK economy.

The Treasury was also accused of “doom and gloom” after predicting that a Brexit would cost households £4,300 a year by 3030, leaving Britain worse off for decades.

Anti-EU campaigners have rubbished claims that it will push up the cost of the weekly shop, imported goods and travel abroad.

There are also concerns about what will happen to Britain's expats living in European countries such as Spain and foreign footballers playing in the UK.

But Eurosceptics argue that the referendum was a historic opportunity to take back control of Britain's borders in order to curb immigration.

THE people of Britain have voted for Brexit in a decision which will transform this nation forever. But what will happen next?

What is Brexit?

The people of Britain voted for a British exit, or Brexit, from the EU in a historic referendum on Thursday June 23.

The outcome has prompted jubilant celebrations among Eurosceptics around the UK and sent shockwaves through the global economy.

After the result, the pound fell to its worst levels since 1985 and David Cameron resigned as Prime Minister of Britain.

Mr Cameron said his successor should take up office by October, at which point the UK would embark on its two-year political divorce from the EU.

The next step is for Britain to tell the EU that it wants to go by using Article 50 of the EU rulebook for the first time in history.

But there will now be a short delay before using the legal mechanism, which starts the timer on two years of talks before the UK must leave the bloc.

Mr Cameron said the next Prime Minster should decide when to trigger Article 50, but he will tell the EU about Britain's decision at a summit in Brussels on Tuesday.
