Hello everyone, I need urgent legal and situational advice regarding a crazy situation I am currently facing with an online car sale that landed me at the police station.

A few weeks ago, I listed a clean 2014 Honda Accord for sale on Facebook Marketplace for NGN 12,500,000.

Two days after posting, a guy contacted me claiming to be an independent car broker/dealer. He said my price was very good and that he had direct buyers line up, asking if I would give him a commission if he brought someone. I agreed.

The next day, he sent a prospective buyer to inspect the car. The buyer came, looked at the Accord, said he liked it, but left saying he would get back to me. When I called him later, he claimed he told the "agent" he found a better option elsewhere.

The following day, the same agent sent a second buyer. This second guy inspected the car and said he wanted to return the next morning with his mechanic/elder brother to finalize things. He showed up the next day alone, saying his mechanic was stuck at work, and promised to return the day after. However, later that same afternoon, an old friend of mine came by, liked the car, paid me my asking price directly, and took the car. The deal was done.

Two days later, the second buyer called me, furious. He claimed he had just transferred the full payment for the car to the agent, because the agent told him the car belonged to him and that I was just a custodian holding the keys.

I told him it was impossible. I made it clear to him:

I never told him the agent owned the car.

I never asked him to pay any third party.

I don't even know the agent beyond random online chats.

He never asked me for the car papers or verified ownership with me before parting with millions.

Sensing massive trouble, I immediately went to the police station to lodge a report about the fraud. I also wrote to the facebook where I listed it and contacted the bank where the money was sent to flag the account, the victim went to the police to report the case and the police have summoned me, I have also consulted with my lawyer.
