# I VOTE FOR HUMAN RESOURCE! My days as a young science student in a regular secondary school was quite challenging because it was characterized by series of theoretical lessons with little or no practical lessons, like a typical Nigerian school situation that it was. Basically because, having access to the needed facilities was more of a wish than a reality – So much for a science student. Well, this doesn’t sound so strange as it is more of a norm than an abnormal situation, given the poor academic standard that has, for a long time, rocked the Nigerian academic system. Prayers for a miracle to change the deplorable situation were not uncommon both secretly and openly by teachers, students and parents alike. Of course very few schools could afford a standard educational structure available only to the very rich class (as defined by the Nigerian economic system) and unthinkable for the low and average class citizens who are, of course, the majority in the Nigerian populace. It is bad enough not to have access to the needed educational facility for an average school standard, but worse to have a multi-million naira facility (within your reach) in your institution under lock and key for seven years and counting. Strange as it may sound, this is the situation in Government Technical College Osogbo, State of Osun. It was an answered prayer for a government to award a contract to raise all state owned technical colleges (as well as secondary schools) to an international standard and to make sure that it was carried out, It is heart breaking to see another government take over power and have the almost concluded project abandoned and locked up for years without any hope of continuity. Currently, Government Technical College Osogbo may be described as yet another abandoned project, but this is an abandoned project with a difference. Within the walls of the institution are un-actualized dreams and unaccomplished professionalism, locked up destinies and imprisoned hopes, yet another seven generations of graduates from a technical college with little or no technical know-how, a story that is too big to be driven home with words alone. If you doubt what I say, please pay a visit to Government Technical College Osogbo, do a site-seeing and ask a few questions. You may just be convinced beyond your imaginations that the situation calls for an immediate intervention. The locked up system was designed with a state-of-the-art classrooms and workshops with well trained teachers that will synergize with this facilities to raise students that can compete with their counterparts anywhere in the world, dependable professionals in their respective fields of professionalism. The proposed system cuts beyond raising well trained students alone. It entailed ensuring a well motivated workforce, boosting the state’s IGR and giving road-side technicians and artisans a chance to sharpen their skills for better productivity. All these are currently under lock and key with no hope of revival. Making fixed assets (such as road construction and the likes) a priority and embarking on the same is a commendable venture, but may not be comparable to investing on human capital, given the current economic situation in the country and State of Osun in particular. Well, you are entitled to your opinion but if you ask me, given the current economic situation of the state of Osun, I’ll vote for human resource rather than fixed assets. The walls are cracking, roofs are falling, machinery are wasting away, roots of trees are penetrating the foundations of buildings, the perimeter fence has been demolished without a hope of replacement leading to a situation where student-control is almost unachievable. If you still think this is not a situation ideal enough to be urgently considered then maybe you prefer the current tag on the students of GTC, Osogbo – an institution for wayward and stubborn children, an institution where students are more interested in social vivices than in learning, teachers’ efforts are frustrated and almost futile due to lack of adequate teaching aids (although available within locked up walls) even though they are not well motivated themselves. All these problems can be solved by simply reprioritizing and considering human resources as a more ideal project to invest in. This is more sustainable than fixed assets as you wouldn’t depend on loans to run the state affairs. A healthy workforce can generate IGR enough to embark on fixed asset projects. We implore the state government to kindly make it a point of duty to see that these students are well equipped for the future by ensuring that they are allowed to enjoy the utilization of these facilities for a better education. This will greatly reduce the influx of half-baked Technical-College-Graduates into the society thereby enhancing the workforce for greater productivity. We are concerned about the total economic situation in the state, but our utmost concern at this point is the state owned technical colleges beginning with GTC Osogbo. You can contribute your quota to this advocacy by ensuring that this appeal is passed on till it reaches the hands of the State Governor (State of Osun). We will not rest until something positive is done about this. We are the PRIME VISION. Tosyne2much fynestboi Lalasticlala Mynd44 Seun
