When you complete your CV and send it out into the world, where does it actually go? What happens to your document between the moment it leaves your desktop/laptop and the moment you’re called in for an interview? How do great CVs actually lead to open doors, expanded options, and thriving employer-employee relationships? The answer is based on a complex blend of technology, psychology, economics, and workplace organization, but here are seven simple steps breakdown: Step 1 The CV leaves your possession. You’ve found a job posting you’d like to pursue, a recruiter who shows interest in you, or a contact who wants to pass your information along to a friend. You pass along your CV (with or without an attached letter of introduction) via email, a submission website, or a document sharing app. Step 2 Your CV enters a database. The recruiter or employer who takes possession of your CV will probably add it to a file or database containing dozens or hundreds of others. Dozens if your CV has gone directly into the hands of the manager who will make a final hiring decision (skip to step 4). Hundreds if the CV has been sent to an HR Office, a general company inbox, or a recruiter who will perform an initial screening for her employer clients. Step 3 Your CV lingers in the database until it shows up in the results of a keyword search. The recruiter, HR manager, or hiring manager who conducts the search will enter keywords with specific phrases that match the needs of the position, like “ICAN certified,” “degree in Microbiology,” “French fluency,” or “Senior level sales manager.” Step 4 Your CV will be skimmed. Human eyes will review your carefully polished text for the first time. Chances are, this initial skim will last less than 30 seconds. Most likely, a reviewer’s eyes will move all the way across the first few lines at the top of the page, halfway across the lines in the middle of the page, and only through the subheadings of anything that falls onto the bottom third. If your CV doesn’t pass this initial skim, it probably won’t be looked at again. Step 5 If your CV passes the first quick review, it will be picked up again a few hours or days later and given a more careful examination. If it passes muster, it may be handed over to a second or third pair of eyes for perspective and commentary. Details that match the position perfectly (like ideal educational credentials) will be held up against mismatches (like a geographic area outside of commuting distance, or three years of clinical experience instead of the required ten). Step 6 If your CV survives these conversations and comparisons, it will be moved into a final round of contenders. If the employers can only interview five candidates, and they have 20 great CVs, this is where the hard work, attention to detail, and lost sleep you invested in your CV will pay off. The difference between one verb choice and another, or a single typo, can put you a step ahead of your competitors or make you fall out of the running. Step 7 Once an interview decision is made, your CV’s hardest job will be over. After your phone rings and the interview is scheduled, the rest of the process will be up to you. Conclusion Once you’re hired, your CV may be kept on file for the duration of your tenure with the company (and possibly longer). This means that even after you land the position, your CV will still play a minor role in the progress of your career. BONUS Congratulations for reading through this whole epistle. Only the serious ones will come this far. Now, since I’m on leave from work, I have decided to be a blessing to a dozen of Nairalanders. When you have a truly great CV, then that increases your chances for getting more interviews for positions that you’re truly interested in. Without a good Curriculum Vitae (CV), you’re not getting the job you want. It’s that simple. The good news is, it’s also simple to create a professional, well-written CV. The following sections provide a comprehensive list of CV writing tips and the advice you’ll need to write an effective one. 1. COLORED PAPER AND FANCY FONTS DON’T MEAN A THING (FOR HARD COPIES) Way too many job hunters think that a bold font placed on brightly colored paper will be a guaranteed way to get a hiring manager's attention. The truth is the flashy paper will hurt the hiring manager's eyes and the bold print will make it hard to scan your resume. Use a neutral-colored, bond paper and use a standard font that’s easy to read. 2. MAKE SURE YOUR HEADER HAS ALL OF YOUR IMPORTANT CONTACT INFORMATION We live in the digital age, but most all employers still prefer a telephone to contact potential candidates. When you put your CV together, put all of your contact information at the top. Your complete contact information includes: Your complete name Your postal mailing address Your email address Your home phone number Your cellular phone number It’s fine to use a P.O. box for your mailing address if you choose, but understand that you’ll have to give your address when you fill out the application. Always use a professional sounding email address that has your first and last name. 3. MAKE SURE THAT YOUR CV IS SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZED. These days, everything eventually comes back to the internet, including your CV. You need to include keywords in the content of your CV so that employers can find it via major search engines. Don't overdo it with the keywords, because that will get your CV kicked off the results pages. Your keywords should be variations of the terms used in your career field that will catch a hiring manager's eye. 4. ALWAYS START WITH THE GOOD STUFF. Did you know that your CV has about 10 seconds to impress the hiring manager? The hiring manager will place your CV on his desk and start scanning your content from the top down. If he gets to the middle of the page and still doesn't see anything he likes, then your resume will be moved to another pile. Put your accomplishments, certifications, awards, educational background, and your most pertinent professional experience in the top half of the resume if you want it to be read. 5. CHECK FOR TYPOS AND BAD GRAMMAR BEFORE FINALIZING YOUR CV. Bad spelling and poor grammar drive hiring managers crazy. A hiring manager doesn’t want to waste time trying to decipher what you’re trying to say. Have a friend or a trusted colleague proof-read your CV before you finalize it to make sure that it’s read smoothly and makes sense. Use your word processor's spell check feature to make sure everything’s spelled properly. Remember that a spell checker doesn’t guarantee that you’re using the right words—it only checks the spelling. If you typed "there" but meant to type "their," then spell check cannot help you. 6. CONSIDER USING A PROFESSIONAL SERVICE. A professional CV service, or an online resume program, can do wonders for helping you create the ideal resume. If you really want your resume to impress hiring managers, then have it crafted by a professional. Talie2kiss: He wil ask u to pay 2000 for review and 500 for coverletterMy dear, did you pass English Language at all? I hope you know there's a difference between "review" and "re-write"? Those who received my mail can testify to the fact that I did send them free sample CV as promised. Now, wisdom demands that you edit it and see what you can make out of it (to form yours). And to those who sent attachments, I gave them my humble review/critic without being disrespectful in addition to the sample I sent. Your case can be likened to that of a person that was taught how to fish but refused to become an explorer. If you don't know how to do it then, you engage the service of a professional. It will be foolishness to be shameful of what is gainful.... And yes, thank you for advertising my unequal quintessential professionalism. One love. |
