Politics / Benue Guber Race: Man Of God, Practice What You Preach – Tarzoor Tells Ortom by BenueBlog(f): 10:40am On Mar 08, 2015
It will be recalled that Prince Terhemen Tarzoor emerged the Benue governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in a keenly contested primaries election held on the 8th into the 9th of December last year.

The election was conducted peacefully with Prince Terhemen Tarzoor polling a total of 517 votes to beat seven co-contestants including former Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr Samuel Ortom who had just 111 votes.

Ortom in a clever move, subsequently jumped ship to become governorship candidate of the main opposition party, All Progressives Congress (APC) before which, according to Tarzoor, Ortom had promised to support him if he emerged as the PDP candidate. A promise Ortom obviously failed to keep by joining the APC to be Tarzoor's major competitor.

Tarzoor showed his disappointed in what seems to be an emotional yet fractious attack on the candidature of Dr Samuel Ortom ...

Politics / Photos Of Benue PDP And APC Gubernatorial Candidates Laughing Together by BenueBlog(f): 12:44am On Mar 08, 2015
Benue APC gubernatorial candidate, Dr Samuel Ortom and his PDP counterpart, Prince Terhemen Tarzoor were pictured in a handshake in what is believed to be their first public meeting since both became candidates of their respective parties.

The pictures show them smiling as eye witnesses say they even shared jokes and laughed, to the admiration of many. This pleasant show should serve as an example to their supporters who recently engaged each other in a series of attacks.

Makurdi is a nice place, the cost of living is good, food is cheap. It's not the best place for business but a lot of them are thriving so it's possible. One bedroom wil cost between 20-90k depending on the location and quality of the building. Security is good especially in Makurdi. The weather can be hot here so get prepared for that. In a nutshell, it's a place that can be home away from home.

Politics / Unpaid Salaries: Benue Lawmakers Reluctant To Compel Suswam by BenueBlog(f): 7:58pm On Mar 03, 2015
Barely a week after the Benue State House of Assembly asked Governor Gabriel Suswam’s aides to offer valid explanations on the salaries owed workers, general financial status and revenue generation of the state, a seeming disagreement has ensued between the lawmakers, LEADERSHIP has gathered.

The lawmakers had summoned the commissioner of finance, Omadachi Oklobia, the chairman of Benue Internal Revenue Service (BIRS), Gabriel Asen and the special adviser to the governor on local government, Solomon Wombo to appear before it by today.

However, there was tension yesterday as the legislators were obviously in a serious disagreement on whether to forge ahead with the probe or compel the state governor to settle the salary arrears...

Hoodlums identified as well known Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, thugs last night attacked All Progressives Congress, APC, supporters and destroyed property at the Half Haven Hotel and the Ortom/Abounu campaign headquarters at Oracle Printing Press Limited, High Level, Makurdi.
A victim of the attack, Terungwa Sunny Nyior, disclosed that he and several APC supporters sat out at HAF Haven Hotel at about 11 pm last night when suddenly more than 30 PDP thugs stormed the place with gunshots and engaged them in a free for all fight using rifles, axes and cutlasses.

Politics / Shocking: How I Slaughtered Two Teenage Tiv Girls (photos Of Survivor) -suspect by BenueBlog(f): 7:34am On Oct 11, 2014
There was an outburst of anger and outrage in Benue State few days ago when news of the slaughter of two teenage girls by a 20-year-old Fulani herdsman at Zongo village, Mabala Council Ward in Makurdi, the state capital, filtered into town.
The unprovoked killing which generated palpable tension in Makurdi town in particular, would have snowballed into another round of bloodbath between Benue farmers and Herdsmen in the state but for the quick intervention of the newly posted Police Commissioner, Mr. Hyacinth Dagala and Governor Gabriel Suswam which calmed frayed nerves.
The swift action of the duo also led to the arrest of the suspected principal suspect who after intense interrogation by the police, gave vivid account of what transpired and how he also inflicted serious injuries on another female member of the family.

The only survivor of the attack, 14-year-old Jirgba Nyeshilea, who is currently in intensive care at a public hospital in Makurdi, also gave account of her ordeal and how her sisters were slaughtered.

HOW IT HAPPENED
As Nyeshilea wept uncontrollably, she narrated how she accompanied her two sisters aged 15 and 18 to fetch firewood at Zongo village in Mabala Council Ward of Makurdi five days ago. According to her, while in the bush,we met the suspect, a Fulani herdsman who asked if we saw any man passing by. “We told him that we did not see anybody, he then asked us to follow him......

Politics / Collins Uma: The Benue Leadership Question by BenueBlog(f): 1:19pm On Oct 10, 2014
A friend of mine was in Makurdi recently. The last time he visited the town was over ten years ago. After he was done with his business, I called him to know his impression of my town. Did he see the changes in the town? What changes, he asked me. I thought a little bit but the answer wasn’t coming. He then said something that has refused to leave my mind ever since. He said Makurdi is one town a visitor can never get lost in. The town never changes. Everything remained as it was ten years ago when he last came to the town. One noticeable change, though, was the banners hanging from what used to be streetlights on the major roads across the town. Ten years ago some of the streetlights were working but now most of them are only good enough for the advertisement of different companies’ products. Scathing as this remark was, it is the truth. What happened to our streetlights? What has changed in Makurdi in the past ten years?

One of the major talking points in Benue at the moment is Governor Gabriel Suswam’s senatorial ambition. I do not have a problem with his aspirations but, on what basis is he seeking this election into the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. When the eight years of his governorship of Benue state is critically appraised, would he come up as someone that merits further election? Primary school pupils have just gone back to school after almost one year at home, the teachers not being paid the full amount owed them. State civil servants and pensioners are also groaning because they have not been paid for months. The Senate is not a retirement home.

I have spoken in different fora about what can be accomplished by a leader who truly has the interest of his people at heart. The last time Benue had such a leader was over 30 years ago when a certain......

Politics / Re: Nigerian Youths Need To Thank Idoma For Allowing D. Mark Run For 5th Term- Gana by BenueBlog(f): 1:00pm On Oct 03, 2014
FrankC3 post=/post/26829386:
I really don't understand some Nigerians and how they look at issues like this. What exactly is wrong with retaining a Senator that represents you well enough and has proven to have a strong base by winning elections to the Senate at the elections? Seems most of the people campaigning against Senator Mark are not even from Benue, let alone his Senatorial District and their only problem with him is that he has been there long enough. Is that really reasonable? It also seems that people compare Nigerian government with that of the US when it favours them, if not, they would have known that men like Sen Robert Byrd has been in the US Senate for 51 years while Sen Daniel Inuoye has been there for 49 years and these men have served in the era of many Presidents and has seen the full view of certain policy directions and as such, truly enrich the quality of political and policy debates. Sane societies don't ask them to resign because they have served for too long, rather, their contributions are evaluated against expectations.

For me, Senator Mark is a very sound and mature Senator and has ensured stability in the polity and the upper chamber in this dispensation. To other Nigerians whom Senator Mark do not represent, he has served us all well. He has proven his patriotism with the way he managed the stormy times in our national life from the Yar'Adua power transition to the Labour issues and military issues. If his Senatorial District still want to send him to Senate, then it is good for us all.

I don't pretend that I have no idea why some people do not like him, which may include that he conducts the affairs of the Senate with much respect, maturity and dignity and does not seem to favour Tambuwal kind of confrontational approach to issue resolution and is also a strong stabilizing force in the polity. Those people actually prefer more anarchy in the system because to them, it somehow rubs off on the President who is the main target. These reasons are just selfish to me. We need more experienced lawmakers at upper and lower chambers!!

I thought you would be outlining his achievements for Benue South Senatorial District over the years...

Politics / Nigerian Youths Need To Thank Idoma For Allowing D. Mark Run For 5th Term- Gana by BenueBlog(f): 10:44am On Oct 03, 2014
Despite outcries from younger Nigerians that Senate President, David Mark should bow out of the National Assembly after over a decade, former minister of state for education, Professor Jerry Anthony Agada is of the opinion that Nigerians need to thank the Idoma people for giving them a ‘worthy’ son like Mark.

Agada also added that the endorsement of Mark by members of his senatorial district for fifth term was in favour of Nigerians.

Speaking with newsmen in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, the Orokam-born writer, who also doubles as a special assistant to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Adamu Mu’azu, said ...

Politics / David Mark, The Idomas & Apa State: The Great Deception by BenueBlog(f): 11:01am On Oct 02, 2014
Since its creation 38 years ago, the idomas who make up the Benue south senatorial district have been unable to occupy the gubernatorial sit for obvious reasons, its minority status and the dominance of the Tiv majority who occupy two of the three senatorial districts in the state. Hence, until an amicable rotational  arrangement is in place, an idoma man or woman becoming a governor of Benue state remains illusive…except where fate plays a role.

This marginalisation has prompted the agitation of the idomas for a state of their own and this longing has been going on for long, a sort of opiom to alleviate the pain of a marginalised people, who have never felt inclusive in their state.

This dream unfortunately has conveniently become the political  strategy of senator David mark. With an abysmal first term at the senate, and a second term election that was marred in controversy and litigation, the retired army general was able to ascend in his third term to become the president of the senate and the number three citizen. This position more than before, created believe within his constituency, that  he will as senate president be able to make a case for the creation of Apa state and also see to its creation. With this impression, the senate president found a master strategy to assert and perpetuate himself as the ‘life’ senatorial representative of the idomas. A zone which he has deliberately refused to develop or empower in any way as a political strategy to keep the people perpetually poor, desperate and docile to his own advantage.

Whenever there is an agitation for change or direct challenge to his position David mark plays the Apa state card, telling the people...

Politics / Re: Will You Be Proud to fly Nigerian Colour Today by BenueBlog(f): 11:55am On Oct 01, 2014
My name is Nigeria !!! I need Re-
Building and not Re-Branding.
In the next few hours, am going
to spend 10 billion Naira to
celebrate my 54nd birthday! I am
Nigeria !!!.
I am divided into 36 unequal
states, plus my capital territory,
christened ABUJA . I have
millions of acres of arable land
and billions of cubic litres of
water, but I cannot feed myself.
So I spend $1 billion to import
rice and another $2 billion to
import milk. I produce rice, but
don't eat it. I have 60 million
cattle but no milk. I have the
capacity to feed the whole of
Africa but I import most food
instead.
I am hungry, please help and re-
build me.
I drive the latest cars in the
world but have no roads, neither
can I boast of manufacturing a
bicycle's tyre. I lose family and
friends everyday on my roads for
which funds have been allocated
to build and rehabilitate but the
fund has been looted. I lose my
young, my old, and my most
brainy and productive people to
the potholes, craters and
crevasses they travel on
everyday. I am in permanent
mourning, please re-build me.
My school has no teacher and
my classroom has no roof. I take
lecture notes through the
window and live with 15 others
in a single room. All my
professors have gone abroad,
some of the rest are awaiting
visas. Those that remain, depend
on money raked from the sales
of hand-outs to students. My
students receive lectures for a
maximum of 3 months in a year
due to lecturers' strike or
students' boycott of lectures
because of lack of better
condition of service and
deplorable condition on campus.
That explains why I have
university graduates, who are
semi- illiterates.
I want a future, please re-build
me.
Malaria, typhoid and many other
preventable diseases send me to
hospitals which have no doctors,
no medicines and no electric
power. So my wife gives birth by
candle light and surgery is
performed by quacks. All the
nurses have gone abroad and
the rest are also waiting to go. I
have the highest maternal and
infant mortality rates in the
world and future generations are
dying before me.
I am hopeless, hapless and
helpless, please re-build me.
I wanted change so I stood all
day long to cast my vote. But
even before I could vote, the
results had been announced.
When I dared to speak out,
silence was enthroned by bullets.
My rulers are my oppressors,
and my policemen are my
terrors. I am ruled by men in
mufti, but I am not a democracy.
I have no verve, no vote, no
voice, please re-build me.
I have over 50 million youths
with no jobs, no present and no
future. So my sons in the North
have become street urchins and
their brothers in the South have
become militants. My nephews
die of thirst in the Sahara and
their cousins drown in the waters
of the Mediterranean . My
daughters walk the streets of
Lagos , Abuja and Port
Harcourt , while their sisters
parade the streets of Rome and
Amsterdam. I am inconsolable,
please re-build me.
My people cannot sleep at night
and cannot relax by day. They
cannot use ATM machines, nor
use cheques. My children sleep
through the staccato of AK 47's,
see through the mist of tear gas,
while we all inhale Carbon
Monoxide, poisonous CO-2 from
popular 'I better pass my
neighbour' (portable generators)
and 'Okada' (motorbike taxis)
The leaders have looted
everything on ground and
below. They walk the land with
haughty strides and fly the skies
with private jets (28 of which
were bought in the last 12
months). They have stolen the
future of generations yet unborn
and have money they cannot
spend in several lifetimes, but
their brothers die of hunger. I
want justice, please re-build me.
I can produce anything, but
import everything. So my
toothpick is made in China; my
toothpaste is made in South
Africa; my salt is made in Ghana;
my butter is made in Ireland; my
milk is made in Holland; my shoe
is made in Italy; my vegetable oil
is made in Malaysia; my biscuit is
made in Indonesia; my chocolate
is made in Turkey and my table
water made in France. My taste
is far-flung and foreign. I no
longer cook at home but take
pride in eating at take-away
outlets fashioned after the
Western style of living.
Anything made in my land is
inferior; I prefer those made in
England, America or Europe . To
crown it all, items made in my
land but specifically sent abroad
with made in England labels are
brought back from 'Oyinbo' land
at 5 times the original price it
would have gone for had it been
sold as home made, please re-
brand me.
My people are cancerous from
the greed of their friends who
bleach palm oil with chemicals;
my children died because they
drank 'My Pikin' with NAFDAC
numbers; my poor die because
kerosene explodes in their faces;
my land is dead because all the
trees have been cut down; flood
kills my people yearly because
the drainage is clogged; my fish
are dead because the oil
companies dump waste in my
rivers; my communities are
vanishing into the huge yawns of
gully erosion, and nothing is
being done. My livelihood is in
jeopardy, and I am in the
uttermost depths of
despondence, please re-build
me.
I have genuine leather but
choose to eat it.. So I spend a
billion dollars to import fake
leather. I have four (4) refineries,
but prefer to import fuel, so I
waste more billions to import
petrol and diesel. I have no
security in my country, but
would rather send troops to
keep the peace in another man's
land. I have 160 dams, but
cannot get water to drink, so I
buy 'pure' water that broils my
inwards. I have a million children
waiting to enter universities, but
my ivory dungeons can only take
a tenth (10 %). I have no power
(electricity) , but choose to flare
gas, and vote billion of dollars
every year to generate electricity
but not a single watt has come
from it. So, my people have
learnt to see in the dark and
stare at
the glare of Unclad flares. I have
no direction, please re-build me.
My people pray to God every
morning and every night, but
commit every crime known to
man because re-branded
identities will never alter the
tunes of inbred rhythms. Just as
the drums of heritage heralds
the frenzied jingles, remember -
the Nigerian soul can only be
Nigerian - fighting free from the
cold embrace of a government
that has no spring, no sense, no
shame. So we watch the
possessed, frenzied dance,
drenched in silent tears as
freedom is locked up in
democracy's empty cellars. I
need guidance, please re-build
me.
