There is no distance in the spirit realm. By: Jonathan Hayfron-Ben More Quotes | Submit Quote The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has overstepped the bounds of reason. To say that most discerning Nigerians are angry with the union is an understatement. Whoever anticipated that ASUU’s show of shame would last this long? At first, we all sympathised with the pedagogues, thinking they were protesting to secure better learning conditions for the younger generation. Alas, we were wrong! Now, the varsity teachers have made it clear that they are more interested in their personal comfort than the future of our nation. At the beginning of the strike, the union bought us over by presenting poor infrastructure as the ostensible reason for their action; yet even after government has made concessions, releasing 130 billion naira and making a commitment to do even more, the lecturers have remained implacable. Isn’t it clear that they have less than noble intentions? To make matters worse, ASUU has resorted to ludicrous antics in a bid to hoodwink Nigerians into thinking that they are national heroes fighting for the evolution of a better educational system. Obviously, this is far from the truth. Rather, they are simply using our young ones as pawns in a ruthlessly brutal duel to prove some political point, which is best known to them and their sponsors. In times past, ASUU has called off strikes even when their requests were not acceded to. Why is it that they have remained adamant now that government is responding positively? I am especially appalled at the manner with which these people continue to insult our sensibilities by maliciously passing the buck to the government and deliberately maligning well meaning people like the Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who interestingly has nothing to do with the whole thing. Being a daughter of academics and an academic herself, Madam Finance minister understands the need for a viable educational system, which explains why she has played a major role in ensuring that funds are released to cater for the provision of infrastructure in our universities. The last I heard, 100 billion naira has been released to put needed infrastructures in place on our campuses. Furthermore, the Federal Government has also committed to spending N200 billion in the 2014 budget on the universities as well as in each of the next three-four years until the universities are brought to world-class standard. This is in addition to the N100 billion dedicated and already made available for 2013. Not stopping there, the government has also increased to N40 billion the first instalment of funds for the payment of earned allowances to the striking lecturers, an improvement from the N30 billion previously released. Any objective observer can easily see that the Finance Minister is in total support of improved emoluments for university teachers. But since it will be unwise to overdo it in a way that it will not be sustainable, she has appealed that they should accept what government has offered. Now, what is wrong with that? Unfortunately, members of ASUU have continued to blackmail the woman for taking such a stance in the interest of national good. For them, it doesn’t matter if the entire economy shuts down as long as their own bank accounts are well funded. Isn’t that the height of irresponsibility? Every university student knows that most lecturers don’t take their responsibility seriously. Most of them run personal ventures at the expense of the students they are being paid to teach. Yet, they keep agitating for pay raise. What an irony! It is time for Nigerians to wake up and nail the real culprit. Like I observed in one of my recent articles, one of our major problems is the fact that we don’t take time to analyse issues for ourselves. Rather, we flow with the tide of public opinion which is most often defined by a few opinion shapers. We must tell ASUU that we cannot contain their excesses anymore. We will not allow them to continue to make scapegoats of our bright young minds, who incidentally are our hope and pride, in a bid to satisfy their selfish ends. |
what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
ASUU is selfish. they behave as if they are the only ones in the education sector. if they want to earn big like those in government, they should resort to politics. an average lecturer earns 1.8million or more per annum not to talk of the PhD holders and professors. what of the primary and secondary school sector which is the bedrock of education is not properly funded in terms of allowances and salaries. a secondary school teacher earns less than 300,000 per annum plus the primary school teachers who earn less than 200,000 per annum. they are very greedy. its time for students to rise up and say NO to this injustice that is being meted out on us. SUG presidents and executives should rise up, NANS should rise up and say NO. universities should pull out of te strike. let there be an enforcement of no work no pay and u will see that they will go back to class. |
Abia state university supplementary form is now on sale for 10,500. good news to all those who couldn't make it in the first post ume and those that didn't put absu as any of their choices has now been given another opportunity as they are going to take the second aptitude test. avail yourself this opportunity. more info soon |
ASUU is a big joke. how can they say that Nigerian students told them to continue with the strike. where did they meet to discuss that? ASUU just tell us that you are fighting for your selfish interest and we will understand not hiding under the guise of university infrastructure. FG has shifted ground in releasing 30bn for lecturers allowance and 100bn for infrastructure. go back to class and teach. you people are also among those killing the education sector in Nigeria. look at the time wasted. the calendar disruption. go back to class and continue negotiations. your grievances against FG shouldn't be meted out on the poor students. FG please try harder with the negotiations. two wrongs cannot make a right. little by little the MoU WILL BE IMPLEMENTED. go back to class. |
babyosisi: ChaiI don't go to chosen church. am proudly a catholic. I mustn't go to chosen church b4 I become a chosen because am already a chosen one of God. I believe in faith even in the bible, d aprons and handkerchiefs that Paul's shadow touched became a medium of healing. I don't believe because a man of God said use n it will b ok. I believe in faith. with faith I can move mountains. I believe in the word of God through Jesus Christ. |
u all should go and sit down. na now una dey wake up. silly bunch of people |
me I don't know which is true or false. but all I know is that I am a chosen because it is said in the bible that we are all chosen ones of God. serve God in truth and in spirit because at the time of judgment, every one will be judged individually not by church. as for the aprons and handkerchief, its by faith. the bible said if you have faith as little as the mustard seed, you can move mountains. even the woman with the issue of blood in the bible said IF only I can touch the helm of his garment I shall be made whole. it wasn't the cloth that healed her rather her faith. |

a friend of mine entered school last year. she is studying architecture in Absu. she is the type that doesn't make friends easily but she made friends. she fancied a particular guy because he is disciplined, principled, nice and intelligent. the guy is also rugged both physically and untouchable spiritually. their friendship got to a point that they were seen together, they did almost everything together. they had sleep overs without anything happening. she fell deeply for the guy that she was always thinking about him. one day in their normal sleep over time, they went out and drank and got drunk. that night they had sex for the first time and that was how their sexcapades began. now the girl wants to stop it because the guy's attitude was becoming annoying. he exhibits that behavior to everyone but hers is worse. she doesn't know what to do because its like she is in love with him. what should she do? |
