Transparency International is joining with more than 25 Nigerian civil society organisations to call on President Muhammadu Buhari to veto legislation that weakens laws to fight corruption.
At the same time Transparency International calls on the Nigerian Senate to uphold the Code of Conduct as it now exists. It should not be weakened as proposed. It should apply to the proceedings against Senate President Bukola Saraki.
“The law should apply to everyone equally. To try to amend legislation to protect the Senate President is a blatant attempt to manipulate the rule of law,” said Jose Ugaz, chair of Transparency International.
Senate President Bukola Saraki is accused of receiving two salaries from two states, in violation of the Code of Conduct and was named in the Panama Papers as having secret foreign accounts, which is against the law in Nigeria.
The proposed amendments to the Code of Conduct and Code of Conduct Tribunal Act are specifically designed to weaken the legislation as it applies to the Senate President.
“Elected officials must be held accountable by the people. We support the call of Nigerian civil society organisations to strengthen the country’s democracy and remain committed to the fundamental principles of democracy and good governance,” said Ugaz.

On that bad day, You and i were waiting for the live broacast of senate president election but unfortunately we were told that the APC senators were having a meeting with PMB so the live broascast was postponed to mid day,then Saraki suddenly opened the WINDOW and announced to the world that election to the senate president office has been concluded and he as won it

ABUJA- SENATE President Bukola Saraki is at the moment presiding over today’s Senate plenary session.

Senate President Saraki came into the chambers at 10.48am and the session took off immediately with the opening prayer.

The Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Danladi Umar at the resumed trial of Senate President Saraki had directed yesterday that his trial would henceforth proceed day to day from yesterday until the conclusion of the case.

According to Umar, his decision to conduct the trial day to day was in line with the provisions of section 396(6) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, just as he said that the trial will begin 10am and end 6pm everyday.

Saraki yesterday said that his trial would not disturb Senate proceedings.

Senate President Bukola Saraki is currently facing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT following a 13- count charge levelled against him by the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, bordering on alleged corruption and false declaration of assets.

Saraki cannot be removed even by the end of this month!! The CCT trial cannot even be concluded this April,the prosecution has not even finished its case and the defense is yet to open.

Even if the CCT delivers judgement tommorrow,Saraki will still remain senate president and continue to appeal the judgement up to the supreme court.It is only the judgement of the supreme court that can automatically send him out of office.

Saraki will be suspended before thursday.He is not the first and won't be the last beside i dont see how he will defend himself,this case is dead and burried he is just fighting a lost battle and stop comparing Tinubu's case with this one

Politics is just like a game of chess,last night i was thinking about how to stop the Saraki led senate from further dabate on CCT bill and a friend mine told me those forces behind his problem might hasten his trial and Nigerians should stage a deadly protest but i told him that is not possible
Just look at what happened today,those forces behind Saraki trial has already blocked all his way out he is just fighting a lost battle
While we are here discoursing todays issue,those forces are already anticipating Sarakis next move and planning how to counter it
