51. Gu Family Book- After a nobleman is unfairly accused of being a traitor and killed, his daughter, son and their maid, are sent to a gisaeng (women who are prostitutes or entertainers) house. Refusing to work as a gisaeng, she agrees after witnessing the brutal beating of her brother. It is soon announced that her first "patron" will be none other than the same officer who betrayed and killed her father. Just before meeting him, the maid swaps clothes with her so she can run away in the middle of the night, while she is raped by him. A mythical forest protector and gumiho (nine tailed fox), notices a disturbance in the forest and finds her unconscious. He falls in love with her and protects her from the men of the man who killed her father by revealing his mystical powers. When she wakes up, she too falls in love with him and marries him after being told that both her brother and maid were able to run away and are safe. In actuality, her brother had been hanged, whereas her maid had committed suicide. The gumiho unable to tell her the truth, lies to her and doesn't tell her that he was a gumiho. He decides to become human in order to be with her. To do so, he must live 100 days without showing his true form to a human, without taking a life (animal or human), and must help anyone that needs aid. But if he fails, he'll lose any chance of ever becoming human, and will become a thousand years demon. The gumiho successfully lives most of these days following these rules, but one day, the officer's men find her alone in the forest. He rushes to help her, and reveals his true form, killing the soldiers. She leaves him and he is later killed by a righteous soldier, who had been told that the gumiho was murdering innocents. She soon discovers that she is pregnant with the gumiho's child and gives birth to a son. Realizing that the baby isn't a monster and truly regretting her betrayal to the gumiho, She entrusts the baby in the care of a monk who was the gumiho's friend. She then confronts the officer, but is killed. The infant is found in a basket by the river, and adopted by a nobleman. He grows up as Choi Kang-chi, who is the son of the nobleman's servant, but raised as part of the Park family. Though the nobleman's wife never liked him, he loves Kang-chi like his own son, and he is close to the siblings. He loves the nobleman's daughter even though she is betrothed to another. Kang-chi is notorious in the village as a troublemaker, but he is good-hearted and loyal, and beloved by the servants at the Hundred Year Inn, which the Park family runs. The nobleman's wife finds out that Kang- chi likes her daughter and ask the guards to send him out but Dam Yeo-wool, a lady who dresses up as a man and loves swordmanship, rescues him and he thinks she's a girl. However, the officer returns to the village. He believes the wealthy Lord Park has hidden treasure inside the Hundred Year Inn, and in his scheme to take over the inn. Various situations makes Kang-chi fall in love with Yeo-wool even though she is supposed to avoid him.
