Muhammadu Buhari, who was the country’s democratic leader between 2015 and 2023, died aged 82 in London on Sunday. Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari will be buried in his hometown of Daura in the northern state of Katsina, once his body is repatriated from the United Kingdom, the state governor has said. The remains of the ex-leader, who died aged 82 in London on Sunday following a prolonged illness, will reach Nigeria on Tuesday, with his burial taking place later the same day, according to Dikko Umaru Radda. Preparations for the burial were under way in Daura on Monday, while the country’s Vice President Kashim Shettima was in London organising the repatriation of Buhari’s body. Buhari, who first ruled the country as a military leader between 1984 and 1985, served consecutive presidential terms between 2015 and 2023. He was the first opposition politician to be voted into power since the country’s return to civilian rule. The self-described “converted democrat” is being remembered by many as a central figure in his country’s democratic evolution. However, some critics have also noted his failure to improve Nigeria’s economy or its security during his presidency. Paying tribute to his predecessor on Sunday, President Bola Tinubu called him “a patriot, a soldier, a statesman”. “He stood firm through the most turbulent times, leading with quiet strength, profound integrity, and an unshakable belief in Nigeria’s potential,” Tinubu wrote in a post on X. "He championed discipline in public service, confronted corruption head-on and placed the country above personal interest at every turn.” Tinubu added that all national flags would fly at half-mast for seven days from Sunday, and said Buhari would be accorded full-state honours. Radda also paid his respects to the former president, describing him as “the embodiment of the common man’s aspirations”. Ibrahim Babangida, a former military ruler who ousted Buhari in a coup in 1985, also released a statement after his death was announced. “We may not have agreed on everything — as brothers often don’t — but I never once doubted his sincerity or his patriotism,” Babangida said. Speaking to Al Jazeera, Alexis Akwagyiram, managing editor at Semafor and a longtime observer of Nigerian politics, noted that Buhari was popular for his “personal brand of integrity and honesty”. However, Akwagyiram also highlighted Buhari’s shortcomings on the economy and security, saying that insurgencies from groups such as Boko Haram had “proliferated under his tenure”. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/7/14/former-nigerian-president-buhari-to-be-buried-in-hometown-on-tuesday

A man identified as Allen Wogu, who claims to be the classmate of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has debunked the minister’s assertion that he made so much money early in life and was driving a Mercedes Benz car as a student at the University of Port Harcourt. Wike who made the claims while speaking on a Channels Television program last week, had said allegations of corruptly enriching himself levelled against him by former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi were false as he was a self made man who started making money at a very young age. Dismissing the allegations of corruption, Wike said he personally purchased his Rolls-Royce and did not receive it as a bribe or political favour, stressing that no contractor or associate gave him the vehicle. I have a Rolls-Royce. So what? Nobody gave it to me. I bought it. People ask, ‘With what money?’ Let me tell you — I came from a comfortable background,” the FCT Minister had said. He went on to state that his father was a general manager of several companies and that he enjoyed a decent lifestyle even as a student. As a student, I was driving a Mercedes-Benz. So don’t let anyone tell you I suddenly became wealthy. I didn’t come from poverty,” he added. But while puncturing Wike’s claims in a Facebook post on Thursday, Wogu said Wike lied about coming from a privileged background as he was a struggling student who could not even afford a bicycle not to talk of driving a Mercedes-Benz while studying political science and education in the late 1980s. “The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. I wonder how someone who has classmates who, by God’s grace, are alive would come on national television and claim he was driving a Mercedes Benz car between 1986 and 1990 in the University of Port Harcourt, where he studied political science/education,” Wogu wrote in the post. Jesus Christ, please have mercy. This guy wore sandals with buckles and never rode on a bicycle throughout our 4-year sojourn, and I have over 4000 witnesses. So this is how he has been lying? Too shocked here,” he added. https://www.ripplesnigeria.com/stop-lying-you-did-not-have-a-bicycle-in-school-wikes-classmate-punctures-claims-of-driving-benz-as-a-student/

Israel claims it targeted a ‘key figure’ from the Palestinian group Hamas near the coastal Lebanese city of Tripoli. An Israeli strike on a vehicle near the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli has killed at least three people and injured 13 others, Lebanon’s Health Ministry says, in the latest breach of a ceasefire between the two countries. The attack in the Ayrounieh area on Tuesday came as Israel intensifies its strikes in Lebanon amid Hezbollah’s weakened position, the Lebanese army’s inability to fight back and the international community’s failure to pressure Israel to abide by the truce. The strike near Lebanon’s northernmost major city – more than 180km (110 miles) from the Israeli border – highlights Israel’s willingness to launch assaults across the country, not just in the south. The Israeli military claimed that it struck a “key” figure from the Palestinian group Hamas without identifying the target. A Hamas source in Lebanon told Al Araby TV that no senior official from the group was killed in the strike. Lebanon’s Annahar newspaper reported that initial reports indicated that the assassination attempt might have failed. Hamas and other Palestinian groups maintain a presence in various areas of Lebanon, mostly in refugee camps that have housed Palestinians for decades. Tripoli is home to the large Beddawi Palestinian refugee camp. Since the outbreak of the war in Gaza in October 2023, Israel has carried out attacks against the Lebanese group Hezbollah and members of Palestinian factions in Lebanon. Hamas’s deputy chief Saleh al-Arouri was killed in an Israeli air strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs in early 2024. While the ceasefire last year ended the conflict, Israel has continued to carry out strikes on what it says are Hezbollah arms depots and fighters, mostly in southern Lebanon. Israeli attacks have also targeted homes, municipal workers and civilian infrastructure. On Monday, at least one person was killed in a suspected Israeli air attack on a van in the town of Deir Kifa in southern Lebanon. The recent attacks were launched as United States envoy Thomas Barrack was in Lebanon for a two-day visit to discuss disarming Hezbollah. On Monday after meeting Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Barrack told reporters he was “unbelievably satisfied” with Lebanon’s reply to a US proposal on taking away Hezbollah’s weapons. Barrack, a longtime adviser to US President Donald Trump who also serves as US ambassador to Turkiye and special envoy for Syria, said he believed “the Israelis do not want war with Lebanon”. “Both countries are trying to give the same thing – the notion of a stand-down agreement, of the cessation of hostilities and a road to peace,” he said. On Sunday, Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem ruled out giving up the group’s weapons before Israel withdraws from the areas it still occupies in southern Lebanon in violation of the ceasefire. Russian troops entered the village of Dachne just long enough to film propaganda footage before being wiped out by Ukrainian forces, Kyiv’s General Staff says. Russian propagandists claimed that their forces captured the village of Dachne in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region – the first in the region to fall, they said. Ukraine’s General Staff says the “capture” was nothing more than a staged propaganda stunt. Videos circulating on pro-Russian Telegram channels showed Moscow’s troops supposedly occupying dugouts in Dachne and raising a Russian flag – supporting claims that the village was “completely captured.” However, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) denied the claims, stating that while Russian reconnaissance forces briefly entered Dachne, they were eliminated shortly afterwards. “The enemy managed to snap a photo with a Russian tricolor, but that was their last activity,” the statement said. “Ukrainian soldiers destroyed the invaders.” They confirmed that small Russian infantry and sabotage groups have been attempting to cross the administrative border between the Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions but have failed to secure any ground. In one of the recent clashes, two Russian soldiers were captured by Ukrainian Naval Infantry allowing them to say they had “added to the prisoner exchange fund.” “Reports of Russian propaganda about securing a bridgehead in the Dnipropetrovsk region do not correspond to reality. Dachne remains under the control of Ukraine’s Defense Forces,” the statement said. The head of Ukraine’s military intelligence directorate, Kyrylo Budanov, said there is no threat to the city of Dnipro other than missile and drone attacks. He confirmed ongoing fighting along the southeastern edge of the region, but noted that this has been the case for “quite a long time.” Before the official AFU statement, Junior Sergeant Stanislav Bunyatov of the 24th Aidar Assault Battalion commented on the alleged capture of Dachne on Telegram, saying, “We must not forget about the rest of the Donetsk region – it’s part of the shield protecting the rest of Ukraine.” Bunyatov added, “Before the full-scale invasion, some suggested giving up territory to stabilize the situation. But reality has shown this would only accelerate Russia’s advance.” The Ukrainian OSINT group DeepState has reported Russia trying to establish a “gray zone” on regional borders, but Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation, stressed that although Russian drones have been active in the area, “there has been no breakthrough.” Spokesman for the “Khortytsia” operational-strategic group, Viktor Tregubov, added: “There are very active battles in villages near the border – Yalta, Komar, Shevchenkove – but our forces are holding the line.” https://www.kyivpost.com/post/55575

US President Donald Trump said Tuesday he could consider deporting Elon Musk, after the South African-born billionaire slammed his flagship spending bill. Trump also said the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) — which Musk headed before stepping down late May — may train its sights on the Tesla and SpaceX founder’s government subsidies. “I don’t know. We’ll have to take a look,” Trump told reporters at the White House when asked if he would consider deporting Musk. “We might have to put DOGE on Elon. You know what DOGE is? DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon.” US President Donald Trump and Elon Musk (R) speak in the Oval Office before departing the White House in Washington, DC, on the way to Trump's residence at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida on March 14, 2025. (Photo by US President Donald Trump said Tuesday he could consider deporting Elon Musk, after the South African-born billionaire slammed his flagship spending bill. DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon.” Trump doubled down on the threat when he said he believed Musk was attacking his so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill” because he was annoyed that it had dropped measures to support electric vehicles (EV). “He’s losing his EV mandate. He’s very upset about things, but you know, he could lose a lot more than that, I can tell you right now. Elon can lose a lot more than that.” Trump made similar comments on his Truth Social network late Monday, saying that “without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa.” Musk, the world’s richest person, was Trump’s biggest donor in the 2024 election and initially maintained a near constant presence at the newly elected president’s side. They had an acrimonious public falling out this month over the bill and the tycoon has reprised his criticisms in recent days, accusing Republicans of abandoning efforts to place the United States at the front of the EV and clean energy revolution. Musk has also renewed his calls for the formation of a new political party called the “America Party” if the bill passed. https://punchng.com/trump-says-will-take-a-look-at-deporting-musk/
