This applies to almost every category of the art, ranging from writing, painting, fashion, teaching, coaching etc. However, regardless of these great discoveries by the many dotcom entrepreneurs and start-ups in this present time, many African artists still go through the old route and get burnt.

I remember how I used to lobby with DJs to play songs of artistes I used to manage some years ago.

Oh yeah!

We were at the mercy of the Alaba boys (producers of DJ mix on CDs in Lagos, Nigeria) who even collected and are still collecting money from some naive upcoming artiste to pirate their songs. This really got me angry and since then I have been working and researching hard to someday crack the code of intellectual property marketing and distribution in Nigeria and Africa generally.

The truth is that as much as the entertainment industry is now making more money, we now have to spend more to get results.

However, I should state here that having a large budget isn’t what will make you money as an artist, spending smart is what will.

Fact is you can’t make money from your art if you don’t distribute your work properly. The distribution of your work of art can either make or mar your professional career just like any other product with or without a large promotion budget.
