Yes, nothing is wrong with those cars. They are definitely not made in Nigeria. Do you know that the costs of importing these basic things: fans and pressing iron is more than twice the foreign exchange spent on cars. Why can't we start making these basic things. 2 Likes |

The ability to build a house is not the same thing as having a good house and no matter how rich or smart you are, you can't start building from the roof down. where are the fundamentals e.g electricity. There's no way an investor will subsidize automobile for any Nigerian whatsoever. It's either you get it as bad as they can come with the N1.2m or no one will buy at all; not even this government officials. Probably most of you are still very young and are mixing emotions and politics to this very important decisions. In all fairness, no one says the ideal is not good. The implementation and execution is the problem. No one is even more Nigerian than any other Nigerians. Ask this questions: where is VON & PAN? Why did they stop assembly? Where's Dunlop and Michelin? Why leave for Ghana? was it that tires importation were not banned? What makes you buy a pair of jean and shirt and not made in Nigeria Ankara? which of the two is cheaper? were imported fabrics not banned? what diminished the made in Aba sandals and shoes of the 80's? why were they unable to survive the competition? are your sole fitted with Nigeria made shoes, presently? See, the answer to all this is power, power, power; i mean electricity. Nigerians will never buy anything more than the price it is worth. Automobile is not even near the basic needs of average Nigerian. There are lot's of things that we can manufacture and are been imported. Believe me, this policy will not create additional job if tailored to satisfy Nigeria market. I desire that one day we'll get our acts together. This will not however happen based on sentiment, emotions and lies. Let me have a land before and i get the seeds. ROSSIKE: God bless you.Please, stop this exaggeration. I wish to fly in 9ja made planes and even travel the moon in 9ja made rocket. That's my dream for 9ja. The reality is, of what advantage are made in 9ja cars-if ever they even plan of making one- when we have other comparative advantage. This China you mentioned started from making tools and they realize that their advantage is not in anything automobile. The emphasis is on CAR ASSEMBLY. Ask yourself who owns the ace on this. We've been through it before what achievement filtered down to us. Please, stop deluding yourself about technology transfer. Is either you steal it, copy ( like China) or develop your own idea. The policy frame work is idealistic. Nevertheless, we should have phased this tariff in, say for a period of 5years. The way the government is forcing this down the throat of 9jarians is the problem. they should immediately start using this locally assembled cars to see and feel everything ordinary 9ja feel 2 Likes |

Having to deal with malaria or headache is not the problem. Knowing what, when and how to apply the remedy is. It's easier for someone with a back-ache to stand and carry a cow. Let see Mr. President, the ministers, the lawmakers and their family start driving Innoson, VW, Peugeot from Jan; 2014. If they should remain a leader, they must lead by example. Only then will i believe that they mean good for every Nigerian. @djon78: How many countries have you been to? Are they like Nigeria? I mean infrastructure wise What's the model of transportation for the leaders in any of the country? @sincere 9gerian: Your affinity to the government is beclouding your judgement. This type of policy will not create job. I've come to understand that automobile jobs in Nigeria context is more or less a reflection of current economics situation. When 9ja economy was good in the 60's and 70's the likes of PAN and VW, Michelin and Dunlop set up assembly plants in 9ja. Where are they now? what factor(s) determine their existence? We are not talking about manufacturing. It's assembly for goodness sake. Who takes the profit? Do you sincerely believe that any of the foremost car manufacturer in the world will operate under this current environment? The key to this question is the purchasing power of Nigerians. It is not encouraging such that NEW CARS (this is what you get when you assembly a car), no matter how small, will become affordable to even 10%. Businesses are set up to make profit and to create wealth. They are not charity. No business entity can afford to set up shop when the target market is not economically visible. |

Getting a good car is not all about mileage or body. The most important things are the mechanical function, electrical and how well it performs when driving. If automatic, check the dip stick that the oil is not burnt. Most mechanics here in Nigeria are after what they could get out of both the buyer and seller of the vehicle hence, they will tell you whatever suit them as long as they are paid by the seller. If you are a good driver, it's easy to determine how good the car is when you drive it. You may as well take someone that you sure knows a bit about cars. Even a good mechanic can't tell you the exact time any engine will pack up. It's however easy to know if the engine is noisy or getting bad by listening and driving the car. 1 Like |
