At least five people have been killed and 1,000 hospitalised after a gas leak at a chemicals plant on the east coast of India, authorities said Thursday, warning the death toll would climb.

The gas leaked out of two 5,000-tonne tanks that had been unattended due to India’s coronavirus lockdown in place since late March, according to a local police officer.

Footage on Indian television channels [/b]showed people, including women and children, lying in the streets of Visakhapatnam, an industrial port city in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

“We can confirm at least five deaths right now. More will be confirmed late,”[b] Swaroop Rani, an assistant police commissioner, in Visakhapatnam, said

B K Naik, district hospitals coordinator, said that at least 1,000 people had been sent to different hospitals, and that it was feared many others may be unconscious in their homes.

“Another thing is that it is still too early in the morning, and there are people who were sleeping inside their homes (around the gas leak) and are unconscious,” Naik added.

“The authorities are checking (in houses) as well. We are working to get people to the hospital. They need oxygenation and fresh air.”

Pictures taken at the King George Hospital in the city showed two or three patients on each bed, many of them children, and many unconscious.

The plant operated by LG Polymers is located in the outskirts of Visakhapatnam. The city and the surrounding area are home to around five million people.

“(The gas) was left there because of the lockdown. It led to a chemical reaction and heat was produced inside the tanks, and the gas leaked because of that,” Rani said.

She said local villagers raised the alarm around 3:30am, “They said there was some gas in the air,” she said.

“We reached there immediately. One could feel the gas in the air and it was not possible for any of us to stay there for more than a few minutes.”

According to the Times of India there were eight dead, including an eight-year-old girl, and 5,000 people had fallen sick.

The incident led to panic among locals in a radius of three kilometres (two miles) around the plant with many people seen lying unconscious on the roads, the paper said.



The News18 television channel also showed people slumped on the pavements in the streets in Visakhapatnam with several apparently unconscious.

Motorbikes were left in the middle of roads as though people had just fallen off them. Ambulances were shown arriving to collect the injured on the roadside to take them to hospitals in the area.

A CHINESE RESEARCHER ON THE VERGE OF MAKING VERY SIGNIFICANT COVID-19 FINDING KILLED has reportedly been killed.

Dr Bing Liu, a research assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh’s Medical Center’s Computational and Systems Biology Department, has been shot dead inside the home he shared with his wife in Pittsburgh.

The well respected 37 year old researcher was alone at his home in the 200 block of Elm Court in Ross Township on Saturday afternoon when another man known as Hao Gu – allegedly entered the residence through an unlocked door and opened fire striking him in the head, neck and torso with bullets.
His wife was not home at the time of the homicide, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

Pittsburgh Police said Gu then returned to his car parked 100 yards away at Charlemagne Circle and shot himself.

According to Pittsburgh police, Liu and his alleged killer Gu knew each other prior to the murder-suicide, but the nature of their relationship is unknown.

Dr Ivet Bahar, head of the Computational and Systems Biology Department, told the Post-Gazette that Liu had only recently begun researching COVID-19.

A statement has been released by his employer, UPMC’s Computational and Systems Biology Department, announcing his untimely death .

‘Bing was on the verge of making very significant findings toward understanding the cellular mechanisms that underlie SARS-CoV-2 [COVID-19] infection and the cellular basis of the following complications,’ the statement read. ‘We will make an effort to complete what he started in an effort to pay homage to his scientific excellence.’

WHAT IS SKIN BIOPSY?

A skin biopsy is a procedure in which a doctor cuts and removes a small sample of your skin to have it tested. This sample may help your doctor diagnose diseases such as skin cancer, infection, or other skin disorders.


SEVERAL TYPES OF BIOPSY CARRIED OUT ON THE SKIN.

Excisional Skin Biopsy: The doctor uses a scalpel (small knife) to take off the entire lesion (lump or an area of abnormal skin) including a portion of normal skin down to or through the fatty layer of skin. This method is used for smaller lesions. You’ll likely receive stitches to close the biopsy site after this procedure.


Incisional Skin biopsy: The doctor uses a scalpel to remove a small sample of a large lesion ( lump or an entire area of abnormal skin).
Shave biopsy: Here, the doctor shaves a thin layer from the top or around a lesion. A tool similar to a razor (double edged) is used to cut out a small section of the top layers of skin (epidermis and a portion of the dermis). A shave biopsy causes bleeding. The Bleeding is stopped by applying pressure to the area or by a combination of pressure and a topical medication applied to the biopsy site.

Saucerization: is performed if the dermatologist envisions that the disease or tumor extends into the upper or mid dermis. In this type of biopsy, the edge of the blade is at a greater angle relative to the surface of the skin. This type of biopsy is often done on the trunk.

Punch biopsy: The doctor uses an instrument called a punch (circular tool) to remove a small circular section of skin including deeper layers (epidermis, dermis and superficial fat). Stitches may be needed to close the wound. A dressing or adhesive bandage is then placed over the site to protect the wound and prevent bleeding.

PREPARATION FOR SKIN BIOPSY

Before the skin biopsy, you should tell your doctor if you have any known medical history of the following:

1. Have been diagnosed with a bleeding disorder
2. Have a history of skin infections, including impetigo
3. Are taking blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin, aspiring-containing medications, warfarin (Coumadin) or heparin
4. Are taking medications that suppress the immune system, such as diabetes medications or medications used after an organ transplant
5. Have experienced excessive bleeding after other medical procedures

PROCEDURE FOR SKIN BIOPSY

1.The doctor will first cleanse the biopsy site,
2.The doctor numbs the skin by using an anesthetic (pain-relieving) injection.
3.The skin is then sampled using one of the above procedures.
NOTE: Shave biopsies do not usually need stitches, while punch, excisional, and incisional biopsies will usually be closed with sutures or steri-strips. The procedure is usually done in the doctor’s office.

EXPECTATION BEFORE SKIN BIOPSY

Depending on the location of the skin biopsy, you may be asked to UnCloth and change into a clean gown. A doctor or nurse then cleans the area of the skin to be biopsied. Your skin may be marked with a surgical marker or marking pen to outline the biopsy area.

You then receive a local anesthetic to numb the biopsy site. This is usually given by injection with a thin needle. The numbing medication can cause a burning sensation in the skin for a few seconds. Afterward, the biopsy site is numb and you shouldn’t feel any pain or discomfort during the skin biopsy.

EXPECTATIONS AFTER SKIN BIOPSY

What a patient should expect after undergoing skin biopsy in no particular order are as follows:

SORENESS – After the skin biopsy is done you may have some soreness on or near the biopsied site for a few days.

DISCOMFORT– Tylenol is usually sufficient to relieve any discomfort. If you had stitches after the procedure, keep the area clean and moist. Your doctor will tell you when the stitches should be removed within one week.

SCAR – You should expect a small scar from the biopsy….unavoidably due to the fact that incisions are made. All biopsies cause a small scar. Some people develop scars that are either prominent, or raised. The risk of scarring is increased when a biopsy is done on the neck or upper torso (the back or chest).

BLEEDING: Occasionally, the biopsy site bleeds after you leave the doctor’s office. This is more likely to occur in people taking blood-thinning medications. If this occurs, apply direct pressure to the wound for 10 to 20 minutes. If bleeding continues, see your doctor immediately.

HEALING: Healing of the wound can take several weeks, but is usually complete within two months. Wounds on legs and feet tend to heal slower than those on other areas of the body.

NOTE:

If adhesive steri-strips (which look like small pieces of tape) were used to close the incision, keep the area dry and do not remove them. They will gradually fall off on their own. If the strips do not fall off on their own, your doctor will remove them at your follow-up appointment.
Try not to bump the biopsy site area or do activities that might stretch the skin. Stretching the skin could cause the wound to bleed or enlarge the scar.
Initially, the scar will be pink and then fade gradually to white or sometimes brown. The permanent color of the scar becomes evident one or two years after the biopsy.


TOTAL TIME TAKEN TO CARRY OUT SKIN BIOPSY
The procedure is non-time consuming. It typically takes about 15 minutes total, including the preparation time, dressing the wound and instructions for at-home care.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE SKIN SAMPLE COLLECTED?

When biopsy has been successfully carried out, your doctor sends the sample to the laboratory for testing. The tissue is processed, and a pathologist examines the skin biopsy sample under a microscope to determine if there is any disease. The results usually come back within one to two weeks.

RESULT

Depending on the skin condition, type of biopsy and the laboratory procedures, results may take several days or a couple of weeks. Results of biopsies for metabolic or genetic testing can take several months or more.
Your doctor may schedule an office appointment to discuss the results of the test. If possible, bring along a family member or friend. It can be difficult to absorb all the information provided during an appointment. The person who accompanies you may remember something that you forgot or missed.

BASIC QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR DOCTOR
Patients should learn to exhibit a certain level of curiosity with happenings around them. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or to speak up when you don’t understand something. During biopsy, some basic questions you should ask your doctor are as follows-

1.Based on the results, what are my next steps?
2.Will I need to repeat the test at some point?
3.What kind of follow-up, if any, should I expect?
4.Are there any factors that might have affected the results of this test and, therefore, may have altered the results?

5.If the skin biopsy showed skin cancer, will I need additional treatment?

COMPLICATIONS AND WHEN TO CALL THE DOCTOR

As a patient who has just undergone skin biopsy, you should call your doctor or health care provider when you experience complications such as

Bleeding – that cannot be stopped by normal pressure application
Signs of infection – redness, pus, warmth, tenderness.

Note: you can also reach out to your doctor if you have questions or concerns bothering you after skin biopsy.


SKIN CONDITIONS THAT REQUIRE SKIN BIOPSY DIAGNOSIS

A skin biopsy may be necessary to diagnose or to help treat skin conditions and diseases such as –

5. Blistering skin disorders
6. Dermatitis, psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions
7. Warts

RISK ASSOCIATED WITH SKIN BIOPSY

Although skin biopsy is a completely safe procedure, complications cannot totally be ruled out. Below are some possible risk–

1. Bleeding
2. Scarring
3. Bruising
4. Allergic reaction to topical antibiotics
5. Infection


HOW TO CARE FOR A SKIN BIOPSY SITE DURING HEALING

1. Cover the site with an adhesive bandage that allows the skin to ventilate.
2. Wash your hands with soap and water before touching the biopsy site.
3. Continue caring for the biopsy site until the stitches are removed
4. For shave biopsies that don’t require stitches, continue wound care until the skin is healed.
5. After rinsing, ensure to Pat the site dry with a clean towel.
6. If the biopsy site is on your scalp, wash with shampoo.

The CEO of the Tokyo Olympics is keeping it real. He is saying there’s a serious possibility the Games will NOT go down in 2021, as scheduled.

The Tokyo organizing committee CEO Toshiro Muto says it’s impossible to predict where the world will be with the COVID-19 pandemic in July 2021, when the Games were rescheduled to begin.

While surveillance of similar patients showed that 80 to 90 percent had no trace of the virus in their system one month after being discharged from the hospital, Wang said officials were only working with “small samples.”

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, warned that if the coronavirus outbreak does not get “globally under control,” it is likely to become a recurring problem.

Fauci echoed officials who warned that the coming week will be a bad one with the number of deaths expected to increase to a “shocking” degree, but said that social distancing practices will help flatten the curve of cases.

“Unless we get this globally under control there’s a very good chance that it will assume a seasonal nature,” Fauci told CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday.

Fauci said that people must be prepared for a resurgence next year, which is why officials fighting the pandemic are pushing for a vaccine and clinical trials for therapeutic interventions so “we will have interventions that we did not have” when this started.

Fauci and other members of the White House’s Coronavirus Task Force have warned that the coming week is going to be a painful for many Americans, and he bucked the idea that the pandemic is under control.

“That would be a false statement,” he said. “We are struggling to get it under control, and that’s the issue that’s at hand right now.”

Most states in the U.S. currently have stay-at-home orders requiring people to keep from going out in public. Delivering a message to those in states without stay-at-home orders, Fauci emphasized the need for social distancing.

A tiger housed at New York City’s Bronx Zoo has tested positive for COVID-19, which makes it the first-known animal in the U.S. to have contracted coronavirus.

The Wildlife Conservation Society which runs the facility and cares for the animals at the zoo made the announcement Sunday, saying a 4-year-old Malayan female tiger named Nadia has tested positive for the disease, which up until recently mostly affected just humans. The diagnosis was confirmed by the USDA’s National Veterinary Services Lab.

The org adds other animals of theirs that have shown COVID-19 symptoms of late, including three other tigers and four lions, which have developed a dry cough, but all of which are expected to fully recover. Presumably, those other big cats will get tested too.

The Malayan tiger marks the first U.S-based animal case of coronavirus and the first case in a tiger anywhere in the world. Different animals including at least a couple dogs in China have reportedly contracted COVID-19, but it hasn’t gotten to our furry domesticated friends or at least as far as we know.

The Bronx Zoo has been on lockdown since March 16.

According to research carried out in line with the recent covid19 pandemic, most coronavirus patients who make use of ventilators end up dead. This small studies used U.S., China and Europe….as case study. The largest study so far to look at mortality among coronavirus patients on ventilators was done by the Intensive Care National Audit & Research Centre in London. It was found that among 98 ventilated patients in the U.K., just 33 were discharged alive.

The numbers from a study of Wuhan, China, are even grimmer. Only 3 of 22 ventilated patients survived.

And a study of 18 ventilated patients in Washington state found that nine were still alive when the study ended, but only six had recovered enough to breathe on their own.

All the early research suggests that once coronavirus patients are placed on a ventilator, they will probably need to stay on it for weeks. And the longer patients remain on a breathing machine, the more likely they are to die.

Dr Tiffany Osborn - a critical care specialist at Washington University in St. Louis who has been caring for coronavirus patients at Barnes-Jewish Hospital- in a statement said-

“We’re not sure how much help ventilators are going to be, “They may help keep somebody alive in the short term. We’re not sure if it’s going to help keep someone alive in the long term.”

Patients need a ventilator when their lungs can no longer deliver enough oxygen to keep the body going. And it’s an extreme measure, “We give sedation so the person goes to sleep. Then we provide a paralytic that stops their breathing,”

Next, a long plastic tube is inserted through the trachea and vocal cords. That allows a machine to deliver small puffs of highly oxygenated air to the lungs. Unfortunately, “the ventilator itself can do damage to the lung tissue based on how much pressure is required to help oxygen get processed by the lungs.” and coronavirus patients often need dangerously high levels of both pressure and oxygen because their lungs have so much inflammation.

Another risk from being on a ventilator is that the tube carrying air and extra oxygen to the lungs provides a pathway for dangerous germs. Many ventilated patients get a new lung infection, a problem known as ventilator-associated pneumonia.

Also added that , the coronavirus often does a lot more damage to a person’s lungs than pneumonia associated with the flu. “There is fluid and other toxic chemicals, cytokines we call them, raging throughout the lung tissue,” .

In some patients, the damage is so bad that even ventilation won’t help. So doctors have sometimes tried an even more extreme measure called extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or ECMO, which delivers oxygen directly to a patient’s bloodstream.

The lungs don’t always heal, no matter how much help they get from a machine, So people need to be diligent about social distancing to keep the virus from spreading.
