The separation was inevitable and they both felt the pain of it but they decided it will not be for long. She will soon be mobilized for NYSC service. They would meet again. For the first time in months they realized they didn’t have each other’s phone number. They never needed it. The funny thing was as Hadiza saved her number on Jaye’s phone, she saw another contact saved with her name but the number was incomplete, just 080. “What is this?” she asked showing Jaye the contact. Jaye smiled as he remembered how he had saved the number. He was wondering why it hadn’t disappeared with the broken SIM but realized he had saved it in the phone memory. He was still smiling when Hadiza asked again “I said, what is this?” “I had the impression you were a fool that day and was not completely wrong” She said laughing after Jaye had told her the story behind the contact. “But you so, so wrong, the number begins with 070 not 080” she added jokingly. “Ok. Let’s start afresh. My name is Jaye. I want to know you better. Maybe we can start from your phone number.” Jaye teased extending his hand for a hand shake. “Sorry I don’t tell my name to strangers but maybe I can sacrifice my number.” They both laughed as they prepared for the time apart. The next day the father and daughter left Akwanga for Kukuri in Yobe state. But the day after, sad news broke and shook Boulevard High School to its root and Jaye even to the bones and veins. The vehicle the father and daughter travelled in had an accident and Mr Salisu was reported to have died on the spot but no report whatsoever about Hadiza, whether she was dead or alive. Jaye profusely dialled her number but to no avail. It didn't ring. He resorted to hope and expectation. He hoped she wasn’t dead and expected she would call one day. Maybe she was in a coma somewhere. She would definitely reach him once she was well, he hoped. He waited days and nights, expecting a call from her. It was a cruel moment for him. One he hoped was just a dream but sadly was not. His world was tearing apart. He couldn’t handle the emotional rollercoaster. His life veered from the anger of betrayal to the Joy of true love to the deep pain of separation and now, the torment of the not knowing what was actually up with the love of his life. It was getting him close to insanity. The self torture continued. What they didn’t know was that Jaye missed them too. Only that he couldn't call them. He had broken his SIM card and didn’t know anyone’s phone number. “I will have to go to them one of these days” he would say to himself only that he couldn’t tell how soon it would be. There was really no pressing need for him to go home. Though it was his home town, he couldn’t really call it home. He grew up in Lagos and visited Ede only during Sallah. Even when they went for those festivals he never connected with members of his extended family. He never thought he the place was never a place for him until his father suddenly insisted that he would continue his school in their hometown. The man noticed his son’s apathy for the hometown and decided to send him down there to reconnect. It was in Ede that he made his friends for life or supposed friends for life. His friendship with David and Adams started in secondary school and endured through their university years. At graduation, they all decided to stick together. They all chose to settle in Ede. The relative quietness of the town and its almost constant electricity appealed to them. His friends had graduated before him and were settled already. David ran a restaurant and Adams worked as a supervisor for a construction company. Jaye would settle there too as an entrepreneur and hype man. After graduating, he lived there until he was mobilized for NYSC. Then the prank came. He wasn’t going to throw away all the plans they had because of some stupid prank but he had to take his time. He would let this ‘thing’ with Hadiza grow first. He would nurse it to a certain stage where she would want to go anywhere with him. More so, he wanted to give Rihanat the space to heal, to move on and get over him. He spent the bulk of service year in Nassarawa and visited his mother in Lagos only twice and she understood. She knew he was in a far place, far away from home. So she didn’t bother him to visit often. Jaye could almost thank her for not going mummy on him.He wouldn’t have been able to handle her troubles. The absence of mama’s pressing gave him the room to enjoy his new home-home away from home. All seemed well until few weeks to the end of his service. One month prior to the end of his service, Mr Salisu retired from his job and decided to go back to his village, Kukuri in Yobe state taking his family with him. Amidst the preparations for relocation, Mr Salisu summoned Jaye to his seating room where they saw football matches every weekend. “Maybe I didn’t tell you but I am not the owner of this house and my rent will be due in December and I think your service will end in July. Am I correct?" he began. “Yes sir” Jaye replied trying to figure out what the talk was going to be all about. Mr Salisu knew he hadn’t call the boy to talk about tenancy and house rents but how would he go about discussing his intimate affairs with his daughter? He eventually went out of his own way. “Young man, I know you love my daughter. I am sure she loves you too. To be honest, I used to believe she would never say yes to any man. In fact, her difficulty with men had led me to take her for a lesbian.” He said and paused briefly. Jaye was slightly amused by the lesbian stuff but still didn’t get why he had to tell him all that. Mr Salisu continued anyways. “She has always proved difficult for men. There was one Ali, young and wealthy. He tried all he could to get her including trying to make me influence her. To be honest, I thought I liked him until I met you. She turned him and many others away. Her only excuse was that she was not ready which I respect. But you came from nowhere and changed all of that for her. She got intoxicated by you. Whatever means you had used, I must admit I was relieved she wasn’t lesbian after all.” He paused at this point and held Jaye’s hand. “I don’t mean to and I know I can’t separate the two of you but I am relocating and must take her with me. She has been adamant that she won’t go with me. Please help me to convince her. She can go anywhere she wants later but I don’t want to return home the way I left, with no wife or children. Please beg her not to disgrace me. I have had enough to put up with already, she should not aggravate it. I would not be asking you this, if her mother was alive…” words drained off his mouth as the emotions poured through the thin air. |

It was the sweetest experience he had ever had. There was no way he could feel bad. All that madness about what his friend did were long gone. He would even call them, had he not impulsively broken his SIM card and he was not someone very good with numbers. He didn’t even know his own phone number. He was now thankful for what his friends did. In a way they had enabled him to be free of the guilt he would have felt for loving up with someone else at the expense of Rihanat. Even at that, he felt they deserve the punishment. After all, they were his friends. They were supposed to be loyal. The punishment took a toll on his friends, since they didn’t know how or what he felt, they concluded that he had deliberately excommunicated them and had dire feelings for their role in decision. “Maybe I shouldn't have been that close to Adams.” Rihanat continuously blamed herself. “I messed up” Adams would think… his thoughts vibrating in his head even louder than the sound of his word would. It was just a prank but things would have been better had he not played it. Only if he could undo all he had done would he feel any better. Not just Adams and Rihanat, but everyone regretted the role they played in the issue. “That was very stupid of me.” David thought anytime he tried to rework his involvement in the stupid prank. He was always worried about how Jaye was faring. This was probably why he didn’t want to go into relationships, he thought. It gross, the prank the pulled. Thinking about it, would he really take that with Bisi? Maybe not, but even Jaye should at least demand some explanation. He went back and forth but always ended up blaming his role in it. With all the upset and anger gone, having been fully briefed, even Bisi felt stupid. She had acted on impulse and the result didn’t feel right at all. She blew it all out of proportion. If she hadn’t made that call, perhaps Jaye would have been less upset and might have taken it easy. She blamed everyone else and blamed herself even more. The feeling was uniform. They had collectively ruined the relationship. They had bond Jaye & Rihanat and they had disbanded them. “We should correct this ugly mistake.” Adams said to David one day. More like an order than a suggestion. He still loved Rihanat but couldn’t bear the sad face she carried around every time. David was surprised by the suggestion. He was sipping soya milk and almost spilled it when Adams spoke. He momentarily paused the drinking probably due to the surprise or to avoid the impediment to what he was going to say. “How?” he asked gulping his milk drink. “Do you know anywhere he is in Nassarawa?” The tone was more like a statement than a question. The question put Adams do-good-resolve to dim. He was not sure too. “I guess we keep trying his number then or pray he comes home.” He aversely offered. |

GOOD MORNING GOOD PEOPLE Nine His friends expected him back home but Jaye had other plans. He wasn’t planning a homecoming. He settled into his new environment albeit very slowly. He spoke very little with people. He ignored even the beautiful Hadiza, whenever they bumped into each other he simply gave a nod and walked pass. Not that he no more found her attractive just that the recent event had made him detest all form of intimacy. He simply went his way and greeted curtly anytime greeting was necessary. He would say “Hi” without stopping or looking at her in the face. She always replied in the same vein. It continued that way until one Sunday evening when Mr. Salisu invited him over to watch a football match with him. It was always a big challenge for him to watch football with his daughter around. She preferred films and music. He knew she won’t object or argue with him if he had an outsider with him. The plan worked. It was two against one and Jaye actually enjoyed the experience. It was his first time out of the shell in which he had caved himself. Mixing with people looked like a whole new experience for him. It felt like a breath of fresh air. The football match especially was thoroughly satisfying for him. Commentary was clear and audible since there weren’t the loud and inconsistent arguments known with commercial viewing centres. On top of all, the result favoured his favoured team. He looked forward to the following week. What would have been the icing on the cake was delicious food Hadiza prepared while the guys watched football but the moment Jaye saw her preparing to serve, he eloped into his room. Mr. Salisu insisted that he be served anyways and made Hadiza take the food to him. “Who’s there?” Jaye asked, his heart almost jumping out of his chest. Who could it be? He looked around his room and saw how messy it was. A feeling of embarrassment washed over him. “It’s me, Hadiza. I brought you food” she said as the door opened. He slightly opened the door and wriggled his hand through the opening. “Thanks” he said as he took the food plate. “I will be back for the plate” she said as she went wondering what was wrong with him. Men are strange beings, one moment they crave you, the other they shy away, she thought as she went. Jaye savoured every bit of the yam and fried egg. It was so tasteful that he wanted more. Yam and egg was his favourite but this was the best he had ever tasted. When Hadiza came for the plates, he forgot about his messy room and found his tongue. “Did you cook it” he asked. “Who else would it have been? It’s only Dad and I around” she replied wondering why he had to ask such a silly question. “Well, you’re a very good cook. Yam and egg is actually my favourite but this is the best I ever tasted” he announced. “Really?” she asked as her eyes wandered through the messy room. Then Jaye threw a proposal at her “Since you’re so good at this, we could strike a deal. You do something like this for me every weekend” “And I will get what in return?” Hadiza asked shrewdly. “You will get to eat from it too” he offered. “What if it’s not my own favourite food? You have to give a better offer” she said in a seemingly serious tone. As if he had to arrive at some make or mar decision, he ate the spoon he was holding and looked pensively serious. Hadiza looked at him and grinned “This guy is just stupid…. and funny” she thought, remembering the motor park experience. “Ok, how about you watch movies on my laptop anytime I watch soccer with your Dad?” he finally arrived. She played along. She carried a meditating face for a few seconds and finally gave her response. “Sounds fair, it’s a deal for now” From that moment on, they wouldn’t look back. Their friendship waxed stronger. They talked about everything, shared everything. She figured out, the guy was not so stupid after all. Mr Salisu noticed their closeness but he didn’t mind because he never knew her daughter to be wayward. She was a smart young lady. He never saw her with a boy and that fact was beginning to get him worried. He had feared she could be a lesbian. His people in Yobe had rebuked him countless times for marrying a Yoruba Christian and almost asked for his head when he allowed their only daughter to be educated, they were especially mad at the fact that the girl had to go to Yoruba land for the schooling. So it was a welcome development that she finally was close to a boy. After all, the boy seemed nice too. Despite his relief, he still gave her one or two words of warning once in a while. “The boy is nice and handsome, but please be careful” he would say. “Oh Dad please. We are just friends” she would always reply. Jaye didn’t want to fall in love again and Hadiza would never go into an intimate relationship, at least not yet. She believed, if she allowed herself to be tamed by emotion. She might end up a slave to it. They both knew their wants and limits. It couldn’t ever go beyond friendship. Their heads opted for a no-love-stories relationship but their hearts had different ideas. The hearts wanted to fall in love like a scuba diver. The heads said no, but the hearts relentlessly resisted. The heads eventually lost the battle and they plunged into love. It all started with just one kiss. Jaye had relentlessly resisted the urge to claim her ever attractive pink lips in his but that evening his defence was breached. He thought he was taking chances but decided to go it all out anyway, and it was worth it. The swirling of the soft wet lips, taste of the lips gloss she wore, the way her tongue wriggled against his, the feeling of her warm breath moisturizing his face, all seized his senses. Her hands fumbled around his neck and he felt the succulence of her breasts as they pressed against his chest. He had never felt so aroused before. Though his eyes were closed, everything was so vivid and he wished the moment could remain… forever. The moment did not remain forever but many more of it was to be replicated and that first moment opened the floodgate of affection and want. At the peak of it they already knew they both wanted each other and eventually it was no more a matter of saying it. They both knew they were in love… intoxicatingly so. Hadiza may not have wanted to fall in love but she realised eventually it was not so bad. In fact it was a beautiful thing, and Jaye, he couldn’t believe the feeling he was having. The way love really felt was amazing. If you haven’t met the right person, you think loving is not worth it. He would say to himself anytime he had the chance.
